SIII constantly searching for WiFi and battery draining extremely fast

Hi! So within the last week I notice my phone has been dying at an alarming rate (instead of going almost 16 hours without having to charge it I now have to charge it within 4 or 5 hours). Mind you my S3 is only 5-6 months old.  I have noticed within the past day that while at home my phone is constantly connecting to my WiFi. Also for most of yesterday my screen would not turn off and into power save mode after answering a text, phone call etc. (I would have to click the side to lock it and turn off the screen).  I ran a virus scan, which came back as clean.  After spending most of yesterday researching this problem online I have turned off the power save mode, which does not seem to have helped.I have also turned WiFi off.  Most responses on other tech sites apply to Sprint and AT&T who have different screen than Verizon. I have seen to enter into some hidden screen to enter this*#0011# but I am not sure if it's legit or not.  I have two apps on my phone outside of what is factory loaded from Verizon.  I do not want to keep my WiFi off all the time but I am desperate! Any suggestions? I have seen previous posts in which someone from Verizon just copies and pastes the same answer and Verizon please do not do that now!

    Hi DaniDee126,
The alarms have been heard and I am here to offer my personalized support! Did this seem to start after installing a new application or updating an existing one? When checking the stats in Menu>Settings>Battery, what are some of the top processes using the battery? Are you streaming music or videos more frequently? Have you adjusted your brightness settings to conserve battery life as well? I am more than happy to offer my help to increase the enjoyment of using such an awesome device!
Thank you,

If Join was on then your home wi-fi must be set to Non-Broadcast.  If you did not set this up (maybe your provider did) then you will need to find the Network Name they used, and any password they used.  The SSID is Security Set ID and to see more try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSID .  Basically it is the name used to identify your router/network.  A lot of times the installer will leave it set as LinkSys, or Broadcom or whatever the manufacturer set it as for default.  Your best bet is to get whoever installed it to walk you through how they set it up, giving you id's and passwords so you can get in.  HOWEVER, if you are not comfortable with this (if you set security wrong, etc.) you would be well ahead of the game to hire a local computer tech (networking) to get this working for you.  You can also contact the vendor of your router and get help (if it is still in warranty), or at least get copies of the manuals as pdf files.  Sorry I can't give you more help, I hope this gives you an idea where to go from here to find more.

  • Anyone having same problem? I phone 4 after updating to Vers.5.1.1. battery cannot be 100% full charge, always stop at 99% and battery drains off fast too :(

Anyone having same problem? I phone 4 after updating to Vers.5.1.1. battery cannot be 100% full charge, always stop at 99% and battery drains off fast too

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

  • Iphone 4s battery draining extremly fast

  • TS3899 Ios 6.1 has problem with wifi and battery drain. Want to go bac to ios 6.0

    Hi,
How can I Test my iPad WiFi & battery? is there a hardware test?
    A real easy test...
Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon.  The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight.  Admittedly the labeling is hard to read but, if you use a magnifier and squint your eyes, you'll see "Output 5.1V, 2.1A."  The symbol between volts and amps is the symbol for DC.  Do NOT use an iPhone charger.  Do NOT use an iPod charger.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.
    According to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • My iphone 5 is working very slow hanges constantly and battery drains very fast

MY iphone is working very slow as well it hangs and also drains a lot of battery..plz suggest me a solution

No, it is impossible to overcharge the battery. The battery charger circuit is actually in the phone, not in the so-called "charger" which is actually just a power source. The charger circuit stops charging once the battery reaches 100%, so you could leave the power source connected for a year and it would not overcharge the battery.
The battery life will decrease over time, according to Apple, reaching about 50% of its original capacity after about 400 full charge cycles (a full charge cycle is 0-100%; so if you charge it twice from 50% to 100% that counts as 1 charge cycle).

  • My iPod Touch 5th generation battery drains extremely fast.

I have a iPod Touch 5th generation, with iOS 8.0.2 and the battery life goes down in less than 15 minutes. I have experienced this since I first bought it, which was 10 months ago. My brother and sister just bought the same iPod as me but in different colors. My brother used his iPod Touch for 1 and a half hours, and it looked like the battery was barely used. I am not sure if this is a problem with my device, because this happened with my dad's iPhone 5 as well. Maybe it is the older models. Does anyone have a solution to this, or ways to save my battery?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • I just got an iPhone 5 64 gb model and the battery drains extremely fast even after tweaking the phone to save battery power anyone else having the same issue!?

Should I take it to the apple store?

    Try these steps as needed.
    1. Reset iPhone (no data loss): Press both home and power buttons for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears.
    2. Restore in iTunes using a backup (no data loss)
    3. Restore in iTunes as new (without  using a backup)

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard Battery drains extremely fast?

I bought my iMac in Sept 2011.
It came with the Apple bluetooth keyboard.
But it has been draining battery extremely quickly since the past 3-4 months!
It began when I noticed I need to change my AA alkaline batteries once a week, without shutting off the keyboard.
Then laterI knew it'll cost me a fortune doing so, so I bought the apple rechargable batteries instead.
After using the rechargable batteries, I need to change batteries once every few days, and I have to turn off the keyboard while I am away.
But for the past few weeks, it's been worse!
Like for the past 5 days, I need to change batteries once a day! And I have turned off the keyboard like 14 hours a day while I'm not home!
Is there any other user having the same problem as me?
Some help me solve this battery problem!

Just found this. Sounds similar to my problem except it is the keyboard and not the mouse:
Recently my late 2009 iMac i7 has started making a rapid beeping noise and the mouse goes crazy. When you pass the mouse pointer over the top menu the menu items look like they are being rapidly selection from left to right. If you press the mouse (Magic Mouse) the noise and rapid selections will stop until you let go of the mouse. If you can manage to reboot the computer, this activity may or may not stop. Turning off the mouse and/or keyboard (both wireless) does not seem to stop the problem.
I have nothing to indicate whether this is related or not but this has started happening since Vmware Fusion just pushed out an update a few days ago. Once could almost describe the behavior as if the Tab or some other key on the keyboard is stuck. However, it's not. Or, at least it does not appear to be. I am using one of the older White Apple Bluetooth keyboards.
Any clues would be most appreciated.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • IOS 5.1.1 upgrade: hot while usage and battery drain

Since iOS 5.0.1 I never had. Artery problem. I used my iPhone from 12.2011 without any battery issues. But after recent upgrade to 5.1.1 I found that while using usual apps, including very simple like card game, my iPhone became very, uncomfortable hot near sim slot location. I was tried to reinstall sim card several times - no effect. Battery drain now terrible in active mode, about 1 percent per one or couple of minutes.
In a sleeping mode all the same - less than 0.5% per hour, but if to start using any application, device became hot and drain starting.
Any similar thigs or ideas? I read a discussion when two recharge cycles solved this problem, but it doesn't help me.

    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
here is a general description of the batteries. it is expected that sometimes the product will get warm, especially when charging. Another thing to look at is multi-tasking which could be the result of some battery drainage, bluetooth running in the backround, a high brightness setting, wi-fi ALWAYS enabled even when outside of a wi-fi zone especially because it will be constantly searching for networks. For information about multi-tasking, try this:

  • Data usage and battery drain has skyrocketed with iOS 8.1.2 (maybe earlier)

3 weeks ago my wife got a text message on her iPhone 5 from AT&T that she had used 90% of her data for the month.  30 seconds later, she got another one saying that she had used 100%.  Granted, her data plan is small, 200 MB.  But, for the last two years she has used as little as 17 MB in a month and her largest prior to this latest month was 49 mb.  This month she got to 380 mb before we were able to shut off her cell data.  Otherwise, a second chunk of 200 MB and another $15 would have been added to the month.
We had noticed that her battery had been draining rather rapidly in standby mode with no background apps running when she didn't have access to WiFi.  We have now correlated the two results, High Cell data usage, Quick battery drain and very warm phone.  In case anyone is wondering about her iPhone 5 being one in the recall, it is.  I took it in and had it tested.  Apple says the battery is fine.  It does hold a charge well.  When all network communications are shut down on her phone and it is in standby mode, there is no noticeable loss of charge in 24 hours (our longest test).
Since I have a grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan with AT&T, I have been doing some testing on my iPhone 5s.  Sure enough, I've seen similar results.  With nearly everything turned off except Cell Data, I've seen 483 MB used in 24 hours.  Of that total, 479 MB was used for Documents & Sync.  I even have everything turned off in my iCloud account, Location services are turned off, no push notifications etc...
The best I can figure, this has been a problem since we installed 8.1.2 and yesterday I installed 8.1.3 resulting in no positive effect on this issue.
At this rate of data usage and no access to WiFi, my wife would have to have a 15 Gb data plan to keep from exceeding her limit.  I don't think AT&T even offers one that big anymore.  I might have to switch to Sprint or T-Mobile if this doesn't get resolved.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance for your shared insights.

Hey this is Brian, bjmcmurry, under a different user ID.  If I logged in as bmcmurry, original post, I was just getting a server error and couldn't get to this discussion nor post a comment anywhere.
Anyway, let me be as brief as I can.  After an extensive analysis of replicating the problem on another phone to eliminate it being a hardware specific issue and that the test phone has an unlimited data plan, I was able to stop the excessive data usage and consequential battery drain.  I believe I have a reasonable explanation of the problem, an iOS logic bug.
I had everything under my control clamped down on the test phone to minimize data usage.  Also, I was forcing all data usage to use the cell towers.  I determined that I was burning at least 11 to 13 Mb per hour doing nothing important.  I literally had everything turned off except 'Settings' was allowed to use Cell data providing a avenue to log into the Apple ID.
The two phones had 2 things in common, they were using the same Apple ID and the same version of the OS.  One was a iPhone 5 and the other was a 5s.
Here is a synopsis of my experience via my written evaluation of the Apple support system (Apple Rep name's have been removed):
After a couple of hours on the phone with an Apple Care Senior support Analyst, it was suggested that I go to the Apple Store to 1) get my battery replace in the iPhone 5 since it qualified for the replacement program and 2) see if the Genius could provide me with any insight in the data usage issue and battery drain.
I'm certainly glad I had multiple reasons to visit the closest Apple store, a 45 min drive.  I got the battery replaced, thanks for that.
Regarding the important issue to me that brought me to the Genius Bar, excessive Cell data usage, I thought the Genius did a wonderful job listening and documenting the problem we were experiencing.  Unfortunately, educating us on the use of the product or replacing our phone was not going to solve the problem.  He eventually figured it out, this was not a user error or broken hardware.  We surmised that the reason I was sent to him was to verify and document that there was a problem.  I clearly had a problem.  After writing copious notes on the issue, The Genius smartly referred me back the the AppleCare Senior Advisor.  So, back to AppleCare Senior Analyst I went. She, knowing this was not a simple problem to solve i.e. beyond her level of expertise, got an Apple Software engineer involved.
My primary frustration is that this should have been escalated to software engineering right away.  My trip to see the Genius was, I believe, a waste of time for both me and Apple regarding this issue.  Diagnosis of this type of problem is well beyond the Genius’ knowledge and job.  The Genius did a very good job doing what he could within the scope of his job.  He just couldn’t solve this problem and had no one within Apple to which he had access for help.
However, that initial consult with the engineer was a bit feeble.  Not only could I not talk to him/her directly, his/her focus was still working with the ‘Black Box' approach.  Having Analyst ask me to do stuff like restore the Phone was more like trying to find a 'work around' than 'identifying the real problem.'  Maybe restoring the phone was going to fix some corrupted data on the phone sidesteping the real problem, the handling of this condition.  The engineer did listen to the fact that I had restored the test phone, the 5s, and only added the use of my Apple ID.  Duh, been there!!!
Having been an previous owner of a software development company that I started in 1980 and retired in 2001, I can tell you that using the 'Black Box' method of debugging is extremely inefficient.  Instead, having access to an ‘Activity Manager’ type app to identify in real time what process was blowing up the data flow would have saved me a lost afternoon at the Apple store and hours on the phone with tech support.
Ironically, I may have stumbled onto a "work around" solution short of turning off Cell Data that stopped the excessive Cell Data usage and consequential battery drain.  Just prior to leaving the Apple Store, I used one of their Macs to log in my Apple ID on the id.apple.com website to ‘Manage my Apple ID’, I was forced to upgrade the security level of my password.  Afterward, my cell data usage seemed to drop dramatically.
I told the AppleCare Senior Analyst that I may have stumbled onto a workaround and I suggested that I give it a couple of days of monitoring.  We'd talk then and I would have results to report.  She agreed.
Sure enough, my Document & Sync usage was back to normal, about 1/2 Mb per day.  Am I happy that the excessive Cell Data usage has stopped?  You bet!  But, there was no intuitive reason that an end user would know to log in on the ID website to unknowingly solve this problem.  As I use to say to my employees, that is not the ‘Macintosh Way.’  And, rebooting the the 'Microsoft Way.'
When I reported my findings to the Analyst, we both concluded that data usage was back to normal.  She did report to me that the engineer did provide a laundry list of suggested activities to help solve the problem.  Remarkably, they were everything that I had already done and were pretty much what the Analyst and the Genius tried to do.  All reasonable tasks.  But clearly, the engineer hadn't even ready the notes on the case before responding.  And, none of the things suggested would have uncovered the real problem, likely a logic bug in iOS.
My advice now is to have the software engineering team rule out that there was an unresolvable state that a background process was fiercely trying to handle.  The iOS does not seem to know how to intervene and prompt the user with a requirement to upgrade their password.  If this does end up being the case, I would call it a logic bug, a perpetual exception that is not being handled properly.
Anyway, I hope this helps you.

My iphone 3g is keep searching for network, and the carrier unable to load network list , wat shall i do?

Yes, that kind of tallies with my experience ... after 3 days of useless iPhone 3G (BTW, killing 3G on the phone and relying on acquiring AT&T 2G didn't help, it still locked onto T-Mobile with the result that it was draining battery and rebooting frequently!), I ended up visiting the local Apple Store.
Although the visit was not to resolve the iPhone problem, whilst there I happened to cycle the phone and due to the store having a local AT&T cell, the strength of the local signal meant that I finally re-acquired a AT&T 3G signal ... once locked on again the phone was fine for the next day.
Nett outcome of this is that I would prefer to lay most of the blame for this debacle on the poor state of 3G support both by AT&T (and US carriers in general), maybe exacerbated in my case by two related events (the local DNC in Denver, which saturated local AT&T cells including 3G and a proliferation of v2.0.0 and v2.0.1 firmwares on iPhones in town, which dragged cell coverage into the weeds).
It would be nice for future sanity if AT&T and T-Mobile could at least resolve the ability to acquire/release the iPhone gracefully, otherwise I'll be very sceptical of travelling back to the US with only my iPhone, as a self-employeed consultant I can't afford to be out of touch for three days again!
