Silence the start up sound?

I often find myself in the library wanting to use my macbook but i always know the last time i had it on i had the volume turned up and so when i press the power button that beautiful start up sound will come blaring out of the speakers which is really quite embarassing when everyone else is in silence!
is there a way to stop the start up sound playing without having muted the volume the previous time i used it?
(i don't want to turn the start up sound off completely just when i'm in a quiet place!)

hmm... people don't really seem to be understanding
the question...
And when question has been answered, one need to consider

  • Death to the Start-Up sound!

How do I turn off the start-up sound?

The chime is the equivalent of BIOS beep codes you hear on standard X86 hardware that uses BIOS. When things are wrong, you will hear different tones. The chime just indicates that all standard tests have passed.
Most Macs are designed to "sleep" instead of be shut down entirely, and by that line of logic you aren't constantly powering the unit up and down, so the chime won't be heard as often as it otherwise would be.
However, the chime CAN be silenced without additional software by holding down the mute key on a standard Apple keyboard, or the F3-key I believe it is, on Apple notebooks while pressing the power button. This setting is not saved, but per-session, so you'll have to do it everytime you power-on if you never want to hear the chime again.

  • Is there any way to mute or eliminate the start up sound?

Loud Start Up Sound of Mac OS 10.4.11 drives me nuts!
It wakes up the babies in the neighborhood and starts the dogs barking.
Is there any way to prevent the start up sound from being produced? Mute it?
    Reduce it?
(The sound volume controls on the keyboard and in the Sound Preference Panels
seem to have no effect on it.)

    Hello,
Just so you are aware, the startup chime is there for a reason. It means all is well with your Mac, but if you wish to silence it go here; http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/macsupport/mac_help/pages/0025-startupsound.html
And just in case the above link isn't what you want go here; http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21378

Try downloading Psst from www.macupdate.com. There is also another, called something like startupchime.prefpane or something like that. Look around macupdate using words like chime and startup chime, and you'll find a way.

  • The Start up sound - shutting it of?

    Hi!
I've got a MacBook and I really want to know how to cancel the start up sound. You know, you turn the power on, the screen is lit, you hear som mechanic noises from the machine waking up and then Boom the starting sound of Doom let's everyone know Jakob has just turned his notebook on. Mostly irritating and a bit embarrassing when sitting in a quiet study hall.
    Have a good one
    Jakob
(oh and turning the sound all the way down doesn't help)

    Cheers mate

  • Silence the power-on sound on Mtn. Lion?

Is there a way to silence the power-on sound on my iMac 10.8.5??  It's nerve-wracking!  Apple should get rid of it!!!!

Yes turn down the volume while you are booted into OS X. The startup chime volume is oddly controlled by the volume you set while you are using the computer. Muted or turn all the way down you don't hear the startup chime. Any volume set in the OS will be reflected in the volume of the startup chime.

  • Mute the start-up sound!

I just had my MAC in for a repair at the Apple store and now that I have it back home, I noticed that  on start-up, the start-up sound plays through the built-in speakers. I do not remember how to turn off that one sound. I do not necessarily want to turn off all system sounds. Is there a way to just turn off, or mute the start-up (and other individual system sounds)?

  • Silence the camera shutter sound in an E72

    Hi.
I'm using a software called YBrowser to snoop around my Nokia E72 file system.
I found out that the sound files for the camera shutter, auto-focus, etc. are located in the following path:
    z:/system/sounds/digital/relevant-sound-file-name.wav
So I proceed to create a silence wav file (of about 10 kb).
My ideia, simple enough, would be to replace the shutter sound file with this silence file and give it the same name, so as not to cause conflicts of any kind.
Although the YBrowswer allows me to snoop around the whole system files, it doesn't allow me paste new files, or even delete the 'CamcorderJavaCapture.wav' (which is the file I'd like to replce).
Any idea on how I could access the Z:/ volume of my phone and do this?
If not through the phone, maybe through a Terminal window and the E72 connected to my Mac via USB?
    Thanks.

Correct it is in protected region of phone so that you would need File Explorer with enhanced capabilities such as self-sign version of Y-Browser by Dr Jukka as per screenshot:
But I can access that screen through YBrowser, no question about that. I can snoop inside the folders and files. I just can't paste anything over, or change names, or delete files. I'll probably need some other kind of file browser to do it.
Anyway, as you say it, if it's a protected part of the phone, that explains why it's difficult to get there without the right tools.
I'm not really a hacker or anything, so I don't mind not getting into that in depth.
Best regards, and thanks for your help.
