Silent recall on MacBook Pro batteries

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=189
"If it wasn't bad enough that to have processor and CPU whine, poor Airport reception and solar ambient temperatures, it appears that some early MacBook Pro batteries are now failing.
Christopher Price from PCSIntel.com has uncovered what appears to be a potential issue with the first batch of MacBook Pro batteries.
According to his blog entry "Now The MacBook Pro Batteries…" Chris' MBP battery fried last night and a bit of prodding from AppleCare got the serial number block. AppleCare said there was a known issue with some early MBP batteries and are cross-shipping out new ones to customers having similar symptoms.
MacBook Pro serial numbers up to W8608 are potentially affected by the issue. This means that only the very first two weeks or so of MacBook Pros produced are potentially affected.
In a story on the PowerPage "The MacBook Pro Serial Number Code" I explained how to decode your Mac's serial number: The first two digits are the FactoryID, the third is the year of manufacture and the fourth and fifth digits are the week of manufacture.
A serial number starting with W8607 means that the unit was manufactured in facility W8 (Shanghai China) on the 7th week of 2006. My MBP 2.0GHz begins with W8607 and the full serial number means that it is production number 983 (within this week) according to Chipmunk.nl.
- W8607 - Manufactured: Week of Feb 12, 2006
- W8608 - Manufactured: Week of Feb 19, 2006
- etc..
Symptoms of a MacBook Pro battery problem include: power level going from a full charge to 90 percent, then immediately off. The battery usually either goes straight to one blinking LED or won't respond at all. Some may experience a significant loss of battery capacity as well.
I have two batteries, one has a 6N606 serial number (original) and the other starts with 6N609 (less than a month old). I have yet to experience any battery problems with them. A quick check of Apple's Discussions forum (MacBook Pro > Power and Batteries on a MacBook Pro) yielded a couple of strange MBP battery oddities, but hardly a pandemic. Let's just hope this isn't the start of the MacBook avian flu."

Hi jeff,
It's good to see Apple replacing parts that fail. I believe this battery is a new design so it's not unlikely to see some with problems.
I have a week 10 machine and even though my battery has not failed, it does have a random behavior. It might go as low as 2400mAh max charge... and when I'm about to call Apple I check again and it's up to 5600... I don't really like this and will eventually ask for a replacement.
I was waiting for a firmware update that will fix this like it happened with the 1.67 hi-res PB's but nothing came up yet.
We'll see.
Best Regards

  • Macbook Pro Batterie suddenly dies !

    Hey,
as others reported my Macbook Pro 17" also died yesterday !
I just worked like I normally do and had about 80 % batterie life and then suddenly the Macbook Pro was off. No shutdown, no warning just stopped working ! I pressed the power button, the start sound came I saw the Apple and again it turned itself of, just like if you run on power cord only and suddenly remove the power cord. I tried again and it also turned itself of even before the grey apple appears. So I removed the batterie for about 10 sec. put it back in and ... now it is working for the moment. But what the **** was that ? Any explanation ? It happened between 92 % and 83 %.
    About my Macbook Pro:
I have it for about 15 month and use it everyday and really like it cause of the ability to run workstation tasks on the street, but this batterie issue really argues with me.

Any idea ? I am not sure if similar things happen again if I reach about 85 % of batterie, but I guess so. Therefore please help and tell me what to do, I have no idea. I am going to run to 0 % to re-calibrate the battery and hope that works but other ways ... . Never saw a battery stop working that suddenly.

  • Macbook pro batterie vs apple care plan

Is the batterie of a macbook pro covered by the apple care plan???

Yes, the same as any other hardware component of your Mac.
It's best to contact AppleCare itself, directly, for questions like this. Especially if you have a problem. The worst thing that will happen if you call AppleCare during your warranty period is that they will claim your specific problem is not covered.

  • Silent SATA for MacBook Pro 13" Unibody

    Hi,
i have a MBP 13" with an Intel i5 CPU. I recognized that the HDD is much louder than in my MBP 13" 2010 i had before. The HDD Aplle delivered was a Hitachi HTS545032B9A302 with 320GB. Does someone else have the problem with an loud HDD?
Some with an alternative Option? I tried a Toshiba MK3265GSX but it is as loud as the Hitachi. I'm looking for a silent drive, as in the 2010-Model, which I don't hear.
I read about the Hitachi Travelstar 5kXXX, has somone experiences with this HDD? Does it have Idel-Clicks like the HTS545032B9A302?
    Sorry for my bad english.

i have the same model of macbook pro 13" and suffer from the loudness of the system in general. harddisc is much louder than MID2010 model. i had the macbook exchanged now two times - and it got worse. first was seagate - it was just like a loud fan noise. then the next hitachi and it got the clicks on top.
also the very loud fan noise as soon as the cpu hits 25% ... the system ghoes up to 6400rpm and is as loud as a jetplane.
im really angry, that apple made this release so bad. also the buildquality is much worse than the last model. the lid is not closing perfectly. the first macbook ive got was so bend, that i had to put 8 businesscards under one end to make it stable....
im really dissapointed from this release - and if i could i would return it and get back to my really perfect MID2010 ... sadly i sold it allready...

  • Does any know how much and where replace MacBook Pro batteries in ireland

Thinking of purchasing a MacBook Pro or MBPr,
Would like to know about apple's after sales, concerning battery replacement and cost for the
    13inch in Ireland.

If you have any problem during the first year of warranty with the battery, Apple will replace it for free at any Apple Store or reseller. This also applies if you buy AppleCare to extend the warranty.
However, note that all batteries get damaged with the time, because their capacity decreases with the time. Because of this, Apple says that new Macs' batteries should have the 80% of their original capacity after 1000 cycles. If your battery gets its capacity decreased quickly, it can be replaced for free if it's in warranty.
Respecting to battery replacements out of warranty, Apple doesn't provide the cost for Ireland, as it's determined by resellers, but in the USA, a battery replacement for a 13-inch MacBook Pro costs $129. In the case of the MacBook Pro with Retina display, $199

  • Macbook Pro Batteries and Fans Whirring

I have a Macbook pro. It is only 2 months old and since the logic board was replaced due to a fault twice I have had the battery symbol at the top coming up with an x in it (power not connected) and the fans have been whirring inside. I have to unplug the battery and plug it back in and it works.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
How fast are your fans going when they whir? You can download "iStatPro", a widget from the Apple site that will tell you the speed. In my MBP, I can't hear the fans at all at around 2000RPM, but I can hear them if the MBP gets hot and they go a lot faster. If you have a fan problem, it will be covered under warranty.
As for the battery, it should also be covered. It may be that there is some misalignment and it doesn't always make good contact. It could also have some sort of internal problem. Does it bulge or get hot?
You might call Apple Tech Support and bring up these issues and let them sort it out.
    Good luck!

You didn't mention if you also acquired the SeriTek/2EN2 enclosure along with the card (or the bundle), but if you search for firmtek within this forum you'll find that several people had problems with the firmtek and seagate combo, in fact firmtek does not recommend that drive, and that's why I went with the Maxtor drives and it works perfectly with a throughput of 3GB thansfers within one minute

  • Defekte MacBook Pro Batterie

    Hallo zusammen,

Simple.

  • Swollen Battery on 2007 Macbook Pro

My battery has recently started to swell pretty badly, and I have taken it out (running off of power cord) because I am aware of the dangers if it continues to expand. The battery was purchased in December of 2008 to replace the original battery that came with the laptop. I have read some cases from 2006, 2007, and 2008 where there was a recall on the Macbook Pro batteries and apple replaced them free of charge. However, since I purchased this battery in 2008 and it did not come with the laptop, would I still get the same treatment? I have heard that batteries should not swell, regardless of how old they are, so I don't know if this means there was a manufacturing defect or not. If you have heard any RECENT cases of battery swellings, please fill me in. Thanks!

I took my slightly swollen battery into an Apple store back in May/June. It had 160 cycles. The Apple genius gave me the story that Li-ion batteries swell. It's a normal part of their life. I told him that mine is barely half way through it's life and it's swelling. He said regardless, it is normal. Then last week I pulled out the same battery and it had doubled or even tripled in size. I sent an email to apple and got a call from Apple Executive Relations saying essentially that this problem has been documented, it's been looked into by their engineers, it's normal, and they aren't going to do anything about it, buy a new one. The phone call had a different tone to it than any other I've had with Apple. Sort of like, look, we aren't going to replace it, we don't see it as defective, buy a new one and leave us alone. I don't like it one bit. I use my Mac for video editing as a business. It's enough that I've started looking into switching from FCS to Avid. I don't like the direction Apple has taken in the past few years. Maybe it's time to switch.

  • MacBook Pro Battery bulging after 10.6.8 upgrade

I have a MacBook Pro Core Duo 17-inch: 2.16GHz (MA092LL/A), purchased in May 2006. It has been a superb performer. I ran Tiger (10.4.11) on the machine until recently, when I upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I usually run the machine on the power supply, but the battery has never had any problems. I had the full 3-year AppleCare warranty on the machine, but obviously that has expired.
Today I noticed that the battery (A1189) was bulging. I hadn't used the machine for several days. I've probably used it for a total of 4 hours since I installed 10.6.8...and all of that usage was with the power supply connected.
I removed the battery and inspected it. The cover plate (with the battery check switch and LEDs) was separating from the body, obviously being pushed up by expanding innards. All 5 LEDs lit up when I pressed the battery check switch, so I replaced the battery and booted the machine (power supply attached). The battery indicator in the menu bar showed that the battery had 100% charge. I usually run the machine with an external Apple keyboard and mouse. Within a few minutes I was unable to use the mouse. The pressure from the expanding battery was locking the trackpad button and disabling all mouse click functions.
I released the battery locks; it wasn't easy due to the pressure caused by the bulging battery. That relieved the pressure on the trackpad, after which the mouse (and trackpad button) worked normally.
Unfortunately, I can't check the battery info in System Profiler; installing the battery locks the trackpad button and disables all mouse functions. However, my usage of the machine has been light, and I've mostly run it with the power supply attached. I have deliberately run the battery down to zero to calibrate it a few times per Apple's instructions, but since the vast majority of my usage has been on the power supply, battery performance has never been an issue. In the few dozen times when I've run the machine on battery power, it worked fine. I would estimate that the battery has used significantly less than half of its available charge cycles. It's obviously still holding a charge.
I've seen a number of posts here in Apple Discussions implying that Snow Leopard 10.6.8 might be causing some problems with MacBook Pro batteries. All my software is up to date. I understand that batteries don't last forever, but the fact that the battery is self-destructing within a few usage hours after I upgraded to 10.6.8 causes me to suspect that this isn't just a battery problem. I don't want to replace the battery and have it self-destruct again if there's a system power management problem.
Can anyone provide any suggestions or information on this issue?
    Thanks!

    stevekn:
After the same thing happened to me, I spent a great deal of time researching this issue. When I wrote the original post in this thread, I was asking whether there was a causal link between my upgrade to OS X 10.6.8 and the bulging battery problem. From the standpoint of the system itself and its ability to manage the battery functions, I'm now convinced that no such problem exists. Similarly, I'm convinced that there is no intrinsic defect in the battery itself...well, except to the extent that I'm about to describe.
All batteries have physical limitations. Among them, operating temperature is perhaps one of the most critical. It's no secret that what used to be called "laptops" are now called "notebook computers" because they get so hot during usage that you can't hold them on your lap—especially when the CPU is working hard for extended time periods. Applied to the MacBook Pro, that means one of the most stressful usage modes for its battery is the condition wherein the machine runs hot for a long time.
My MacBook Pro experienced exactly that  condition during my recent system upgrade, in which I had to install Leopard as an intermediate step in order to be able to install Snow Leopard. I suspect that it was the Leopard install that dealt the death blow to the battery. It required lots of CPU usage for a long time, and the battery got very hot in the process. (Of course, it was running on the power supply at the time—which is advisable for a system upgrade.)
During the Leopard install, I checked the machine. That's when I discovered how hot the the machine had become. I had never observed the MacBook Pro getting that hot during any previous usage. I put a couple of heat sinks under it and elevated the machine, but I now believe that by then it was too late.
It's my opinion that the battery simply couldn't tolerate that kind of heat. Shortly thereafter, the two center cells started growing, with the resultant trackpad symptom revealing the problem...and by now you probably know what happens after that. The bulging indicates internal damage to the cells, in which the chemical compounds interact in such a way that causes the cells to expand.
In the case of my battery, I had set it aside and then had forgotten about it while I researched a replacement battery. When I found the damaged battery several weeks later, it no longer looked like the battery in your photos, with some separation of the battery case and cover. I discovered that the damaged cells had continued to expand slowly in the interim, eventually forcing the battery case completely apart. I suspect that if you observe your damaged battery over time, you'll find that the damaged cells continue to expand in the same way.
That's typical behavior for damaged cells, so in that sense, it's "normal". Whether it's "normal" for the cells to become damaged in the first place is more difficult to say, but I suppose that it depends on the kind of usage the battery gets. In my case, I ran the machine with the power supply attached most of the time, I never made it work very hard, and I even used a small cooling fan when I ran the machine outdoors in hot weather. I suspect that's why I got over 5 years of use out of the battery.
But nothing lasts forever, and that aging battery was seriously stressed by the Leopard installation. I'm now convinced that it was its undoing. If there's a lesson to take away from this, it's probably that heat kills batteries. Eventually, the battery will die a peaceful death by exhausting its own ability to hold a charge, but until then you can reduce the chance that it will die violently in the battle of the bulge by keeping it as cool as possible

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It has a defective logic board that may be covered by this recall program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
