Silly Doubt in Exchange 2010 - Datacenter SwitchOver

Hi Team
i have a very silly doubt in my exchnage 2010 environment with two sites
two mailbox servers (Site A )  and another two mailbox servers in site B  .All the four mailbox servers is same DAG
site A mailbox database copies are available in site B and Vice Versa.
in site A , if two mailbox servers is down / not reachable, automatically the database are moved from site A to Site B and mounted over there. and normal mailflow is happening with interruption of few sec / minutes
then why we need Datacenter SwitchOver  and what is is purpose of doing Datacenter SwitchOver and Datacenter SwitchBack, as the mailflow is functioning without any issue
it may be silly , but i would like to be very clear from  top of my head
thanks team

Hi Li,
Correct , that is not a problem for me now. The problem is below as mentioned
i just started the datacenter switch over  from one site to another site and unfortunately i have been halted in the initial stage itself in my test environment
Site: Main-Office
One Domain Controller: Indlabbitesdc01.labbites.co.in  - Hosting
DNS Services
One Hub Server: Indlbht01.labbites.co.in  - Witness Server
2 CAS server (CAS ARRAY) - casarray1.labbites.co.in and casarray2.labbites.co.in
Casarray IP: 172.29.137.50
2 Mailbox Servers – Indlbmb01.labbites.co.in and indlbmb02.labbites.co.in
Dag Name: DAG1
DAG IP: 172.29.137.140
Site: GUINDY-OFFICE
        - No WIteness server in this SIte
One Additional Controller: Labdeldc01.labbites.con.in
One HUB and CAS Server: indlbguex01.labbites.co.in
2 Mailbox servers – indlbgumbx01.labbites.co.in and indlbmb03.labbites.co.in
Both mailbox servers are members in DAG1
As per Plan , DAC is enabled in DAG1
Next step i shutdown all the servers Site:
Main-Office and trying to open the powershell from one of the mailbox from Site: GUINDY-OFFICE  for issuing the command Run the Stop-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup cmdlet in the shell  and i got
the below error
         VERBOSE:

  • Exchange 2010: Virtualized Exchange 2010 Datacenter Migration

We have a virtualized Exchange 2010 production implementation that needs to be relocated to a new datacenter. We will be leveraging SAN based replication and VMWare to cutover.
    Some background info:
    3 CAS/HUB servers
4 Node DAG across 2 sites (3 production Mailbox servers in the site to be migrated, 1 mailbox server will not move and be left in DR)
Since I need to shutdown 3 mailbox servers in a 4 node DAG, the cluster will go offline and the databases will dismount. I could run a datacenter switchover to preserve service, but I have the OK to take Exchange completely down.
    Knowing that:
    1) What are the best practices to shutdown and start up all the CAS servers and Mailbox servers (both in prod and DR)?
    2) Should I suspend replication or dismount the databases in advance and prevent them from automatically mounting on boot up?  Is the StartDagServerMaintenance script relevant in this situation?
Any suggestions on the proper way to go about this is much appreciated.  Thanks for reading.

-->1) During the shutdown...would it make sense to turn off the 4th mailbox server in the DAG which is located in our DR site? I'm thinking that leaving the DR mailbox server powered off and powering it up last among the DAG members would prevent
any database copies from being activated in DR.
You already have a planned outage. I suggest you shut down the server in DR and start that after starting
    all the 3.
    2) To be able to mount a database in a 4 node DAG, I need to have the file share witness and two mailbox servers available first...correct?
Your fileshare witness should be online first otherwise none of your databases will get mounted.
If your DAG contains odd number of members filesharewitness will be ignored, (even number of DAG members will use filesharewitness)http://blog.credera.com/technology-insights/microsoft-solutions/when-do-dags-need-a-file-share-witness/
    Thanks, MAS

  • Datacenter Switchover - Evicting members of a DAG

    Background:
We have two AD sites (A and B), each with their own datacenter with internet access.
We have three multi-rolled Exchange servers (2x in site A, 1x in site B). We'll call them Aex1,Aex2,Bex1
We have a DAG configured spanning sites A and B consisting Aex1,Aex2,Bex1.
We have three copies of every database. Bex1 hosts only passive copies. Aex1 and Aex2 host both active and passive copies.
Aex1 and Aex2 need to be powered off for 2-3 days while they are physically relocated.
Prior to shutting down Aex1/Aex2, we plan to activate all databases on Bex1 (in Secondary site) and update DNS as necessary to point clients to the CAS in the secondary site.
I'm familiar with the online Exchange Server 2010 Datacenter Switchover guided walkthrough and plan to use it.
    http://support.microsoft.com/common/survey.aspx?scid=sw;en;3510&showpage=1
    Question -
When I run Restore-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup -Identity DAG -ActiveDirectorySite <Recovery_Site B>, DAG members on the StoppedMailboxServers list are EVICTED from the DAG's cluster.
When I go through the datacenter switchback procedure to re-add the evicted DAG members, will Exchange synchronize the database copies on Aex1/Aex2 from Bex2 or will it have to perform a FULL reseed? Total downtime for Aex1/Aex2 will
    be 1-2 days MAX.
My concern is that full database seeds takes a very long time between the two sites (they are in different geographical locations, connected via a WAN connection with a latency of ~150ms). I want to avoid having to perform a FULL reseed.
I appreciate any and all input. Thanks!

    Hi mlawpa,
They will need some time to sync the database copies after the Mailbox servers have been incorporated into the DAG.
However, accoding to some specific conditions during the outage, it may require reseeding the database copies.
For example, if during the outage, you remove the database copies from the failed primary datacenter to allow log file truncation to occur for the surviving active copies in the second datacenter, reseeding will be required.

  • DataCenter Activation //Exchange 2010

    Hi,
One of my client is activating exchange services from secondary datacenter. Could you expert folks please review this & let me know if you see any issues and help me make this easier to achieve
    with little to no interruption.
    Some background:
The activation of secondary datacenter is needed because we’ll be migrating the current primary datacenter to new facility which will then become the new primary datacenter. And to support Email services uptime/SLA, we’ll be activating the services
to secondary datacenter meanwhile, post successful datacenter migration we’ll then have to failback the services this new datacenter.
Exchange Environment: We’ve 2 Multirole exchange 2010 SP3 servers at each site. One pair F5 Load balancer (GTM & LTM configuration) at each site. Each site has IronPort
for outgoing email. UM gateways are configured in cluster spanning both sites. Each site has its own CAS array. Webmail & autodiscover records are published to public DNS
    Here is a plan.
Route public      traffic from Primary  site F5 LoadBalancer pair to Secondary      site F5 LoadBalancer pair. (Change webmail/autodiscover host name to
secondary datacenter & Flush the cache on DNS server)
Change the      internal DNS server record for CAS Array, Webmail, SMTP Relay, Internal      autodiscover etc to point to secondary datacenter
Either rename      the secondary CAS array as Primary CAS array or set the primary CAS array to      secondary site
Change all the      exchange Virtual directory external URL as public webmail mail URL and      internal URL will have local Secondary site CAS array followed by
    directory type.
    Configure OWA      redirection on IIS
Change Iron      port/HUB server to ensure source transport server is now secondary hub      server and smart host is secondary ironport
Replicate relay      connector to secondary hub transport server so applications can relay      emails via these servers
UM servers      gateway exists at both sites and SIP trunk is configured so I don’t see      any need for change
Move OAB to      secondary exchange server
Login to server      in the Secondary datacenter & run
    Stop-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup      -Identity DAG01 -ActiveDirectorySite Primary
Verify StoppedMailboxServer should list all mailbox servers in the primary datacenter and the StartedMailboxServers should list all mailbox servers in the recovery datacenter
Verify that the cluster services on all Exchange servers that were accessible in the primary datacenter were cleaned up & Ensure the startup type for Cluster Service is set to disabled
Stop the Cluster      service on each DAG member in the Secondary datacenter.
Run the restore command from secondary exchange servers as below
    Restore-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup      –Identity DAG01 -ActiveDirectorySite Secondary
         -AlternateWitnessDirectory:<AWSPath>      -AlternateWitnessServer:<AWSName>
Verify that the DAG members are up and the Cluster Group is online
    Activate/Mount      the databases now
Shut      down primary Datacenter exchange servers, & Necessary SAN backend.      Move the hardware to new datacenter. Plug them in and turn them on &
if the exchange server/SAN come backup online properly then login to      primary exchange server & run.
    Start-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup      –Identity DAG01 -ActiveDirectorySite primary
Ensure DAG members are up and the Cluster Group is online
    Set-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup      –Identity DAG01 -WitnessServer <WSName>
         -AlternateWitnessServer <AWSName>
Move active      database copies to primary datacenter.
Repeat step 1 to      9 to turn the things back on primary datacenter.
Let me know if this can be further improved or rather simplified.
Regards, Pushkal MishrA, This posting is provided “AS IS” with no warranties and confers no rights. I request you to test the solution in lab and post successful outcome you should try this on production.

    Hi,
To get the traffic to DR site, you need to change the DNS record to point to the VIP of the LB in the second site.
Here is a related thread which may help you to understand this for your reference.

  • Exchange 2010 : Doubt with recipient type and problem with disappearance of the original recipient in the mail relay

Hello. First of all, thank you very much for your attention.
After that, I will expose the problem:
I have a user domain called "comercial" with a corresponding mailbox "[email protected]"
    . This user
has assigned multiple emails such as "[email protected]", "[email protected]", "[email protected]" , having as default   email "[email protected] ".
    On
    the other hand,
    another domain user
    called
"menganito" with it's mailbox  "[email protected]" account, also has a few mail accounts "[email protected]", "[email protected]", " [email protected]"
    ...having
    as default   email "[email protected]
    The user "Comercial" is forwarding
all of it's mails to the user "menganito".
The problem is that "menganito" is not receiving the exact
    "comercial"
sender email, but the email which appears by default ("[email protected]").
    "Menganito" would like to know
from which email exactly the mails he is receiving have been sent ("[email protected]",
    or "[email protected]"
    or "[email protected]").
Also, he would like to knowthe email of the original sender (from the outside of the domain) whom the user "Comercial"
    have received the email from.
In another type of email servers (Kerio,...)
this is not a problem, because forwarding by
    defaultis always showing
the original sender and original receiver.
Maybe the problem comes from the recipient type I'm using.
Should I use another type of recipient? should I use a transport rule?
Any idea ? Thanks again in advance.

Hi Simon. First of all thanks for your answer.
This happens with all accounts. I tried with news accounts and different browsers for OWA and Outlook anywhere and happens the same. Is not a cache problem
    The problem is
    when "[email protected]"(default
    and set as default answer
    account by
    exchange)
    receives
a message in  "[email protected]" when
    forwards to "Menganito"
this message will appear from"[email protected]"
    instead of "[email protected]".
    This happens with all accounts.
    I can understand that i can't avoid
default reply address on the same
domain, but also with different domains happens
    the same?
The platform is only one clean and updated server 2012 as dc and another clean and updated server 2012 with exchange 2010 sp3 directly and after rollup 4 for exchange SP3, no previous versions and servicepacks of exchange 2010 was installed before. Before
install exchange 2010 sp3, i installed all the filterpacks (3) and .net 3.5 and all updates that i finded for 2012 server (i tried for 2 days): No more updates for sure.  After, in powershell, i put this:
    Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework-Core,RSAT-ADDS,Web-Server,Web-Basic-Auth,Web-Windows-Auth,Web-Metabase,Web-Net-Ext,Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console,WAS-Process-Model,Web-Mgmt-Tools,Web-ISAPI-Ext,Web-Digest-Auth,Web-Dyn-Compression,NET-HTTP-Activation,Web-Asp-Net,Web-Client-Auth,Web-Dir-Browsing,Web-Http-Errors,Web-Http-Logging,Web-Http-Redirect,Web-Http-Tracing,Web-ISAPI-Filter,Web-Request-Monitor,Web-Static-Content,Web-WMI,RPC-Over-HTTP-Proxy
    -Restart
The machine and exchange works good (i3 with 4gb ram, and raid 1 1tb of HD) and the organization only has 15 mailboxes. No problems with even viewer and all is correct.
    Thanks again.

    Hi,
For CAS/HUB servers, you can still use Windows NLB to load balance traffic. It is supported but the recommendation is to user HLB. Besides, it is recommended to create a Client Access server array even if you only have a single Client Access server within
    your organization.
For DAG, we shoule note that each member of the DAG must also be running the same operating system.
More information about datacenter switchover, please refer to

  • Exchange 2010 SP3 DAG Witness/Quorom Server Placement with 3 Datacenters

Hi we have 2 Exchange 2010 SP3 Server in the same Organization in a DAG
First one in Datacenter 1 in Germany
Second one in Datacenter 2 in Austria
There is a Third Datacenter available in Switzerland
Where should we place the Witness Server?
Our major concern is not a WAN Link will go down, most time a Datacenter will loose Power for some hours due
    maintenance work or other things.
Is it a good idea to place the Witness Server in the third Datacenter!?
We found a Document which some missconception which talks about placing the witness always in
the primary Datacenter. But the Datacenter Switchover Document for Exchange 2013 says use a third Datacenter.
Is that also okay for Exchange 2010 or are they totally different?
    Thank you in advance
    Troga

    Hi,
It is a new configuration option in Exchange 2013 that we use a third location for hosting the witness server.
Placing FSW in the third location will privide the ability automatically failover databases to the other datacenter in response to a datacenter-level failure event.
For more details, you can look at the "Witness server placement considerations" section in the following article.

    It occurs to me:

    Hi,
    Let's try the following resolutions:
    1. Check if the discovery SearchMailbox is present on Exchange 2010 when you run the Exchange 2013 Install.
    2. Reinstall your Exchange 2013 server:
    Open ADSIEDIT, CN=Configuration, DC=your domain ->CN=Services ->CN=Microsoft Exchange ->CN=First Organization ->CN=Administrative Groups ->Cn=Exchange Administrative Group ->CN=Servers ->CN=Server name
After remove the exchange server, please reinstall your exchange server to test the result.
    Thanks,

  • Upgrading from Exchange 2003 Bridgehead servers to Exchange 2010 Transport Hub servers for routing SMTP only

Our company moved from on-premises Exchange 2003 to Office365 and only have 4 Exchange 2003 servers on-prem that we use for Routing email from application servers to Office365. We need to migrate these servers to Exchange 2010 then to Exchange 2013 and
only route email only. Is it possible to upgrade to Exchange 2010 by installing the transport Hub & Mailbox server options only? Our OAB and EWS services come from the CAS servers located on Office365 so we should not need a CAS server to set up Transport
rules or route mail would we? Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated! - Thanks, DWB
    Dave

Since it is not internet facing we will not have to worry about configuring an Internet Domain Name when installing the first server, correct? in my planning I was going to
install the Exchange 2010 CAS/Mailbox/Transport Hub roles on one server, then upgrade it to Exchange 2013. Once this is completed I'll then install the 2 mailbox role servers in one Datacenter, and 3 more in our DRP DC. If something happens to the
primary Datacenter I would want it to fail over to the other site. For this I would have to install another CAS/mailbox server in the secondary DC. Would this plan sound about right? Since we moved to Office365 in 2010 I have not had a chance to deal with
actual servers except for the Exchange 2003 servers we still have on-premises. Each of these are located in 4 Regional offices along with single Windows 2008 R2 servers using only the IIS SMTP service for routing mail from on-prem application servers
and print/scanners which email back to the users. The plan is to move to a routing system which will provide both MTA and redundancy if one has an issue.

  • Hardware requirement for running exchange 2010 on vmware workstation

Dear Team,I need to create a exchange 2010 sp2 on a guest os on vmware workstation.kindly help me out with the physical hardware requirements for a home user

    Hey Mukund26,
Before I answer your questions, my suggestion would be for you to figure out exactly what you want to get out of running that Exchange lab.  Are you trying to learn Exchange features like DAGs?  Are you trying to learn about virtualizing Exchange?  When you figure that out you'll be better able to answer question 1 since you may not need all of those virtual machines.
Here are my thoughts on your questions.
    1) It is probably technically possible to run 10 virtual machines on the configuration you have but you're going to have pretty bad performance. I would try to trim that down to only the virutal machines that you really need in order to use the lab how you want to use it.  Here are some questions that may help you figure out what you need:
Why do you need two domain controllers?  I don't think you need to worry as much about redundancy in your lab.
Why do you need 2 ESXi hosts and a vCenter?  What purpose do they serve in this configuration?  Are you trying to run the Exchange VMs nested under the ESXi VMs?  If so, why?
Is there a reason why you want to separate out HTS/CAS from MBX in your lab?   Combining all roles together can reduce the number of VMs you need.  If you separate out the roles you'll need to allocate a lot of RAM to support all of those Exchange VMs.
    2)  Running a lot of virtual machines on a single 1TB SATA disk, especially a 5400 RPM disk, is going to be slow.  It'll be especially painful when the VMs are booting up, rebooting, shutting down, etc..  Try to stagger the power on operations so they don't all boot at once.  For example, first boot your DCs, then boot your HTS/CAS, then your MBX, etc.   There is no doubt that configuration will be slow, so if you can get your hands on an solid state drive with enough space you'll have significantly better performance.  For the purposes of a lab, though, it is probably ok if you can be patient.
    3) I think the i5 processor will be just fine for this lab.  Usually in a lab setting CPU performance isn't the most important thing so similar to above as long as you can be a little patient I think that CPU will suit you just fine.
As I said figure out what you want to get out of the lab and then you can determine how many VMs you need and whether or not you want to upgrade hardware.  If you're looking to learn about Exchange 2010 in general I would suggest using multirole servers, getting rid of one of the DCs, and not worrying about virtualizing ESX/vCenter so that you can learn.  If you're looking to learn about virtualizing Exchange 2010 on vSphere then let's figure out exactly what you want to get out of it and figure out what you can learn using VMware Workstation and what you really need vSphere for.
    Best of luck!
    Matt

  • Exchange 2010 to 2013 users migration

    Hi,
I am migrating users from Exchange 2010 to 2013 and facing a lot of migration issues. few of them are as follow.
    1. It hung up at "syncing" and end up with a failure.
    2. After a long migration i got the following errors
Error: MigrationPermanentExeception: Failed to reset the target mailbox after the move. Error Details:MaipExceptionADUnavailable: Unable to prepopulate the cache for user :: on domain controller xyz.domain.com (hr=0x80004005,ec=2414) Diagnosti Context: Lid:

Error details: Target mailbox connection was lost.
    3. users migration is taking a lot of time although mailbox size is not big and both servers are in same datacenter.
    Need urgent help pls....

    Hi,
Here are the general steps for troubleshooting mailbox moves:
    1. If the move request didn't complete, view the Move Request Statistics.
    2. If the move request completed with errors, view the move report.
    3. View the Event log on the Client Access server running the instance of the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication service that's processing the failed move request.
    4. use the Exchange Management Console or the Exchange Management Shell to increase the diagnostic logging levels on the Client Access server for the Mailbox Move and Service categories of the MSExchange Mailbox Replication service.
For more detailed information about general steps for troubleshooting mailbox moves, you can refer to the article below:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638094(v=exchg.141).aspx
Additionally, in order to narrow down the cause, I’d like to confirm the following information:
    1. Are the problematic target mailboxes in the same database?
    2. Is there a time boundary? After that, you cannot move mailboxes:

  • Moving Exchange 2010 Mailbox replicated databases path in DAG environments.

    Hi there,
I’m trying to get some feedback on the topic of moving Exchange 2010 Mailbox replicated databases path in DAG environments.
Here is the situation: I currently have a 3-Node DAG (Node 1 and Node 2 are in my main datacenter, and Node 3 in my Disaster Recovery (DR) site in a remote location.
I have DB copies in Node 2 and Node 3. The thing is that the DB copies in Node 2 are in an older storage box and since we got a new storage box, I need to move the DBs and related logs of Node 2 to the new storage box
I have found some information about how to deal with this (below I’m listing a KB link) but I would like to reconfirm a couple of things to make sure I’m understanding this correctly
Move the Mailbox Database Path for a Mailbox Database Copy:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979782%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx
According to the KB: “If the mailbox database being moved is replicated to one or more mailbox database copies, you must follow the procedure in this topic to move the mailbox
    database path”
Would this apply to my case even when I’m moving the BDs copies and Logs on Node 2 as opposed to Node 1 where the source DBs are?
On step #3 in the procedure, you are supposed to “Remove all mailbox database copies for the database being moved. After all copies are removed, preserve the database and transaction log files from each server from which the database copy is being removed
by moving them to another location. These files are being preserved so the database copies do not require re-seeding after they have been re-added.”
Then in Step # 7, you are supposed to “Add all of the database copies that were removed in Step #3”
As far as I know, when you add a copy of a database, Exchange creates the copy DB and starts to seed the replica servers with an up to date copy of the DB and all the current transaction logs at that point…according to the instructions
above, you are supposed to re-add the DB copied we preserved...does it mean that we need to wait for the DBs seed process to finish after “adding the DB copy” and then replace the new DBs copies and logs created by the “Add database copy” function with the
DB and logs preserved in Step #3?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

    FT

    Hi there,
What the article is stating is that once you have removed the copies you can keep the existing transaction log files and database edb file to allow you not to have to do a full seed. You can do this by using the -seedingpostponed parameter in
    Add-MailboxDatabaseCopy
However, and quite honestly, if your database isn't that big and your are not worried about performing a full copy of the database again to the other DAG members once you have moved your database to its preferred new location, just add the copy in the normal
way and remove the legacy files afterwards.

  • Exchange 2010 DAG's - 4 Mailbox Servers in 2 Datacenters with per site redundancy

I recently came into a company with an Exchange 2010 sp1 environment where there are two data centers in two different subnets (10.70.62.0 and 10.80.56.0)
Each datacenter has 2 mailbox servers (4 servers total) but their plan was to have only enough storage space to host 1/2 of the databases on each server. So instead of server 1, 2, and 3 being copies of each other, ServerA is a copy of ServerA and ServerB
    is a copy of ServerB
    Server     -            Databases
    Site1mbA - Primary Database copy 1-10
    Site1mbB - Primary Database copy 11-20
    Site2mbA - Secondary Database copy 1-10
    Site2mbB - Secondary Database copy 11-20
Normally if there were enough storage space I would keep a copy on each server and replicate within 1 DAG.
However since not all the databases are on each member server do I need to use 2 DAGS? 1st for Site1mbA & Site2mbA and 2nd for Site1mbB & Site2mbB
I feel I would need the 2 DAG's because with 1 DAG if Site1mbA server went offline the DAG couldn't switch to the Failover Cluster IP for Site2 because there are still active mailboxes in Site1 on Site1mbB.
Does that make any sense or am I over complicating it?
    Thanks!

There is no rule that every server in a DAG must have a copy of every Database. You could do this with one DAG, but if the WAN goes down then the DAG will be active in only a single site not both.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979781(v=exchg.141).aspx#FourTwo
As illustrated in the previous example, using a single four-member DAG extended across two datacenters can provide high availability and site resilience for the mailbox services and data. However, if a WAN outage occurs, only the primary datacenter retains
service because it contains the majority of the voters. The datacenter with the minority of voters loses majority, and the DAG members in that datacenter lose quorum and go offline.
To deploy highly available Mailbox servers in a multiple datacenter environment, where each datacenter is actively serving a local user population, we recommend that you deploy multiple DAGs, where each DAG has a majority of voters in a different datacenter,
as illustrated in the following figure.
    Cheers,
    Rhoderick
