Silly noise on brand new ipod classic????

Hi .... I have recently bought an ipod classic 160gb. I was looking forward to finally getting an apple gadget - everyone always says they're so good.
The first thing that I noticed is that it makes this high pitched noise every time you select a song.... It doesn't do it every time, but if you selected 100 songs ... it would probably do it 50 - 60 times out of that 100....
I took it to the genius bar and they told me that all ipod classics do this, that it was the hard drive working and that it was nothing to worry about. I have never had any gadget, mp3 player or even phone make this noise when scrolling through music... In a loud environment you would never hear it, but in a quiet room - say a library, study or an office it can be heard from a few feet.
I accept that hard drives make noises sometimes, but I've never had a device do this before - it's like a little laser sound every time you change track. It's quite annoying and not a very good start for something that was brand new for the price of £190.
Has anyone else experienced this? I tried to exchange it, but the shop said they could see nothing wrong. Do they all make this sound or was I just being fobbed off a bit?
Thanks if anyone has any thoughts.

Hi, thank you very much for your reply. A lot of people seem to say that which sounds good, so at least it's not broken. Thanks... But it still means it will always make that little beep sound every time it's used... A bit annoying in quiet places like when studying...

  • ITunes 10.6.1 (7) freezes when syncing brand new iPod Classic

In my attempts to sync a brand new iPod Classic (160 GB) with iTunes I only get a freeze up of iTunes, where only a force quit helps to terminate the hang. I have of course done all the usual, i.e. restored the entire iPod Classic, restarted my Mac, made sure all software is the latest software. All to no avail.

Syncing a 160GB iPod Classic, may take a long time, so better to stop all other process or apps, when you do it.
Especially, disconnect all other USB devices and connect the iPod directly to the body of the Mac and not to the Keyboard USB port or any USB hub.
I think you have done all other suggestions, that I can think of.
Except doing a Disk Diagnostic on this new iPod, and send it back to Apple if the DD report is bad, refer to this earlier post by tt2

  • Itunes won't sync to my brand new ipod classic.  It says "The Ipod cannot be synced because it cannot be found.

I have been onto Apple by phone, and into the Apple store where both of them recomended that it gets replaced.  I did, got a brand new ipod classic, and i still have the same problem.
I have attempted to restore, but it won't let me for the same reason.
On a couple of occations it starts to sync!!  however it goes through practicly the whole syncing process (12,000 songs, heaps of videos) and then just freezes up! The little rainbow orb spins forever until i have to force quit.
I have had my old ipod and my partners ipod regestered and used on the one itunes with no complications whatsoever, our old ipods sync perfectly with no problems at all.
    very frustrated.
    Is it my Ipod Box?
    Or is it Itunes?
or does it not like me having more than two ipods registered?
with the last new ipod which was replaced and the current new ipod that's a total of 4 ipods regestered on the one itunes
My partner has a Dell Laptop with Microsoft.  I downloaded Itunes on there, ripped one cd, formatted the current new ipod, and it synced the one cd i ripped with no trouble at all.
Has anyone else had the same problem with their Ipod Classic?
    Mick

Is iTunes up to date (10.7)?  Have you tried plugging the iPod into a different USB or using a different USB cable?
I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread to check your Hard Drive's health.  He always covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • Brand new iPod classic 160 gb won't show up in iTunes devices

Brand new iPod classic 160 gb won't show up in iTunes devices. The iPod is fully charged, iTunes reckonises my iPod touch, iPad, iPhone 3G and iPhone 4, but not the iPod classic, although it says the iPod is connected it doesn't register in iTunes.

I purchased a new iPod Classic 160 GB in August 2013 and it (the iPod Classic device) would not show in iTunes though it did show in the Apple Finder. I tried EVERYTHING numerous times including resetting the iPod, updating iTunes and trying everything in the book and in on-line tips. Nothing worked and I was about to give up when I tried using the Apple iPod Classic cable that actually came in the iPod Classic box. It worked!!! Conclusion? Dont just use any old Apple cable eg. from a iPhone or whatever; TRY the USB cable that came with your iPod Classic!!! I have 2009 iMac with the latest Mac OS BTW.

I connected my brand new iPod Classic 160 GB to my brand new Sony home entertainment system through the headphone jack (to the audio line in). The volume is ridiculously low. Can somebody help me out here?

Make sure the volume on the iPod is turned up fully, since this will affect what you hear through the stereo.
Make sure Volume Limit is set to full. (From Main Menu, Settings/Volume Limit)
If you purchased your iPod inside the EU (European Union), then the maximum volume from the headphone jack is lower than elsewhere in the world. If this is the case, buy yourself a 30-pin Dock Connector to 3.5mm jack lead, such as the one linked here...
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Decrescent-Connector-Stereo-Auxiliary-iPhone/dp/B007NIE5 EE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386012456&sr=8-1&keywords=30+pin+to+3.5mm
That connector will take a higher volume out (than the European Union's output) and that will be louder (and hopefully loud enough) through your stereo.

I have a brand new Ipod classic (Christmas 2012-13), a newish laptop (2012) and have just downloaded the latest version of iTunes.  However, despite iTunes working fine on the laptop, the ipod being recognised by the laptop/iTunes, telling me it is synchronising, it actually won't synch.  I have reset the ipod, tried different USB ports, restarted the laptop, and uninstalled / reinstalled iTunes, but still not working.  Can anybody help ?

Well, I don't know if that's a software or hardware problem.  You should take it to Apple Genius Bar or send it to service center.  And one more thing, Its not synch......  Its Sync...  Just saying...  It would help if you send pictures of the problem.  Such as the screen of iTunes saying it's syncing.  It will help everyone and me...

  • Brand new ipod classic won't sync to itunes 11.

I just got a brand new 160gb ipod classic for Christmas, and when I tried to sync it with itunes it wouldn't work. I ran the diagnostics and it failed the sync tests, and apple's help/troubleshooting page does not give any solutions to this problem. I have the latest version of iTunes and my computer is a Windows XP. What do I have to do so I can sync my ipod?

I posted as other have that there is something wrong in iTunes going on with the syncing of these classics. First my wifes stopped being recognized in the diagnostics. It says there is no phone, ipod or ipad attached, but iTunes shows its attached. then I called my daught up and had her check her iTunes version and she is also at the latest version online. I asked her how long has it been since she knows she has synced her music...she said a week or so.
I asked her to download any podcast or free music and try to sync. Her Classic 160 did the exact same thing 200 miles apart. Both iPods previously worked with no problems for years. Now neither is detecable in the iTunes diagnostocs. I unloaded and reinstalled a clean iTunes on my wifes win 7 x64 laptop that she has used since the ipod was new (years). No good.
I know Apple is going to find a problem either with the mobile service or something else that is going to be the cause of this syncing or not syncing issue.

  • Brand new iPod Classic will not sync with iTunes.  All my older devices are fine, but as soon as this is connected, iTunes stops responding when it says it's "determining tracks to sync."

Also, the iMac I'm connecting it to is brand new as well - replacing a slightly older one.  My complete library got imported during setup and, like I mentioned, my older iPod classic synced fine, as did our iPhones.  Thoughts??

Is the Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC option ticked from under the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes?  If so disable this feature and then try resyncing the device.

  • Problems with brand new ipod classic

I purchased a $245 classic for my son's birthday last week. He opened it, was excited, and went straight to the computer to begin using it. Unfortunately, it did NOT work. I can't really say the problems he was having because he was the one using it. I believe he said that it would not format, and that the computer did not recognize the device as an ipod. He then tried it on his girlfriend's computer and it did not work there either. We called Apple and the representative told us to return it to the store. The store told us that it had to go through Apple (per Apple's orders). We called the same guy back and he said to send it in and they would send us a new one. OK, fine. But now they are saying that it was "undetermined accidental damage" and they will not repair or replace it. The ipod did not work from the moment it was opened!!! I find it quite unfair that we now have a brand new completely unscratched $245 paperweight, and no gift for our son. The website does not give me help with addressing this issue. Does anyone out there have any ideas on who to contact next? The guy we talked to in customer service lied to us twice (first by telling us the store would return it, and second by saying they were just going to ship a new one since he had just opened it). We don't really want to bother with him anymore. Our frustration is unreal. Thanks for any insight you might have.

I can't speak for Apple, and I don't think we could speak to what your son did with the iPod (as opposed to following the setup instructions which I believe are in the box, and direct you to www.apple.com/ipod/start to install iTunes), as when I turned my Ipod Classic 160GB on, it simply booted up and started working. No "formatting" was required.
If you have an issue where a vendor promises you a return, then reneges ... turn all your information over to your credit card issuer or bank and ask them to initate a chargeback. That will get the seller's attention.
    That's my $0.02.

  • My brand new iPod classic is dropping old songs when I sync new ones. How do I fix this?

I have a brand new, less then a month old iPod classic. This is my second one as there first one I bought was defective and couldn't be recognized by my computer. This new one isn't without it's glitches. I had 465 songs on it and went to sync some songs, and videos I'd bought from itunes, I synced and unplugged my ipod. Itunes shows 488 items in my library and ipod shows 178. What's going on and how do I fix this?

What you are hearing is the sound of the iPod's internal hard drive spinning up to read data from disk for playback. So basically, what you are hearing is completely normal for the iPod Classic. If you still feel that it is unusually loud, find another person with an iPod Classic and compare them. If your iPod is louder, it could be signs of a faulty/damage drive, but don't be sure quick to jump to conclusions.

  • Brand New iPod Classic stuck on hold!

So I just took my new ipod out of the box a few hours ago, charged it, ejected and disconnected, put it on hold, and then plugged it back in but forgot to take it off of hold before I did that. Now it's stuck on hold, the screen won't even go dark. I can't press anything and my computer doesn't seem to recognize it when I plugged it back in. I have tried moving the hold switch back and forth - nothing helps. Any suggestions? This is my first time having an ipod ever, and it's kind of frustrating to have it not working!
    Thanks!

Have you tried resetting the iPod?
This is done by moving the hold switch to on, then move it to off and press the menu button and the centre (select) button together for (up to) ten seconds. This should cause the Apple logo to appear on the screen and the iPod to reset. You may need to repeat this step. This has to be done sometimes when the iPod gets confused!
If that does not work, then try the 5Rs, see here: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/ . Hopefully you will be able to reset it - try that first before the 5Rs.
It should not be necessary to turn the hold switch off before plugging the iPod into your PC.
    Regards,

  • Brand new ipod classic frozen and doesnt appear in finder

i am so freakin sad... I also have a brand new mac notebook, i got them at the same time. For the first week everything worked together fine. I plugged in ipod today to load some more music and it did not show in finder and is now frozen. I followed the 5 steps but nothing

Does the iPod work still, if it is frozen let the battery die and then start to charge it. If none of this works take it to Apple store's genius bar and they will most likely fix your problem.

  • Brand new Ipod Classic 80Gb - Synching Problems - Ipod ejecting itself

Bought a new 80Gb Ipod last week after my old one crapped out. Computer also crapped out so had to load all my CD's to another laptop on newly downloaded Itunes 7.5. Hooked the new ipod up to the laptop and immediately had problems with the Ipod 'ejecting' itself before any songs were loaded. Furthest I managed to get was name the darn thing before it ejected. So, tried the 5R's with no success - still kept on 'ejecting' - sometimes straight away, sometimes part of the way through synching the library always with the end result of no songs on the ipod. Tried updating windows, updating Itunes, restarting computer, using different cables, different USB ports (all 2.0) with no success. Took the Ipod to the Apple Genius Bar where they restored it and managed to successfully synch a few tracks. Thinking the problem was solved - took it home and it is doing exactly the same thing again. AAAARRRRGGGHHH. Trawled the forum boards all day yesterday found a few suggestions I hadn't tried - setting it to enable disk use etc etc. When I hooked the ipod up last night it was ejecting immediately after connecting so not even giving me a chance to try the new fixes. Plugged it in this morning for a last ditch attempt and it connected long enough for me to switch on the manual synching and I successfully loaded 32 songs out of 4000 (yippee!!) before it started the same carry on again - disconnecting itself..
This is so frustrating - what has happened to the ipod??? I had no trouble at all with my old one. A new piece of kit such as this should not be so time consuming and stressful. After this experience there is no way I will buy another ipod.
    Has anyone got any suggestions?

I had over two weeks of frustration getting the right collection of fixes installed (iTunes 7.5 and 1.0.2 on the iPod; 1.0.3 should be OK). My symptom was that iTunes starts to go spacey on me when I plug the iPod classic into the USb port. There are long delays that I can't find a good cause for.
Start up iTunes on your PC.
Before you connect the iPod to your PC, try putting the iPod into Disk Mode (don't know the article info but there is one on this site; just search for "Disk Mode". There will be a check mark on the iPod screen when you have successfully arrived there.) Then plug it into the USB port on your PC.
It may take several seconds/minutes for the iPod to be recognized in iTunes (I get some help with this by clicking on the Windows Start button, which overlays part of the iTunes screen, and waiting for iTunes to refresh its screen.)
Before you click the Sync button, be sure you have chosen all the tabs you want to sync; since my music library is over 40GB, I choose this one first and let iTunes copy over my whole music library. I also check the Enable Disk Use box on the Summary screen. I then go out for coffee or to the bathroom (it takes a while).
Once everything is copied over, be sure to press the Eject button in iTunes to be sure it is releasing the iPod.(Try my Windows Start button trick above to get positive feedback when it is safe to disconnect.) When it disappears from the list on the left-hand side and the screen is refreshed, it is safe to disconnect the iPod. (I'm not sure this is absolutely necessary, but it works for me.)
It can be a little dicey to get the iPod out of Disk Mode or even to just turn off the iPod, but keep trying and you should be able to get it back into normal mode with all your music, video, podcasts and photos (haven't tried Contacts or Games) playable.
    Getting

  • Brand New iPod classic won't turn on.

Minutes after getting home with my new iPod I plugged it into my computer and synced my library with it, afterwards it asked me to install an update and I let it, it told me it was going to reboot, it shut off and now it won't turn back on. I know there's some life in it as when I hold down the reset combo i hear windows indicate that I've disconnected and reconnected a USB device however nothing displays on the screen and iTunes tells me that it cannot recognize the iPod. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just as an additional note now when the I connect the iPod windows lists a "Apple Recovery (DFU) USB Driver" in device manager.

Press Menu and Center Button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON, then let go.
    Select the preferred language
it will bring you to the Menu screen.
    Go down and select music.
