Silverlight  or Flex

Any opinions on Silverlight or Flex. A comparison of
capabilities.

I haven't used silverlight and probably won't unless someone
makes me. I think the general consensus is that no matter how good
SL becomes, it has way too much catching up to do. And given
Microsoft's penchant for suddenly changing direction, it makes me
wonder why anyone would give up a mature development tool for
something that's essentially in beta.

  • Support for Eclipse?

Will there also be an JavaFX PlugIn for Eclipse?

JavaFx is supposed to compete with adobe flex and Microsoft silverlight. Flex has a pretty decent IDE support, Flex builder. Microsoft with its developer centric approach , is bound to come up with excellent IDE support. With majority of java developers inclined to using eclipse, what do we have in store?
Eclipse is an excellent IDE no doubt, but on GUI front, it falls flat on its face. For example, to build swing/SWT applications, we have to rely on plugins. Cant a decent plugin be already there in eclipse, at least in the most recent version 3.4??
For Java EE applications, including normal jsp as well as jsf, Eclipse provides a pseudo graphical interface. Developers have to drap and drop jsf components, which are boxed and boxed deeply.
Will JavaFx have same fate in eclipse??
Compare this IDE support with visual studio, in fact compare it with VS2005, not even VS2008! Who wins hands down? we all know the answer. no wonder , VS users are so productive.
the problem is not with new java related technologies, but the knowledge is fractured and distributed all over the place. where as on MS front, one IDE, one prominient language, one way of development.
Try out VS , not to switch over, but to see what the competitor has produced and to develop a poduct for java community which atleast gives us an edge!!

  • JavaFX and multimedia

    Hello!
I have some general (abstract!) questions about JavaFX and programming multimedia applications.
JavaFX is made for web, desktop and mobile applications. And I could use all kind of J2SE-API´s which are available for the specific platform.
So how does it supports programming multimedia applications? Are there any other frameworks or which kind of possibilities do I have with JavaFX itself?
I know this a very abstract questions, but perhaps you could give me some hints / buzz words, so I can start searching for it. The background of this question: I have to compare the multimedia possibilities with other technologies like Silverlight or Flex. First I have to list these possibilities and then make an evaluation (what´s good - what´s bad, easy to use, also for a non-programmer, ...).
    Perhaps someone could help me.
Thanks a lot in advance & Best Regards.

    @InteractiveMesh:
Yes, I see that I could use every Java-API which will be available on this platform, so Java 3D is included in the J2SE and therefore I can use it.
On mobile phones with J2ME I can´t use it. But how could I know, programming in Eclipse/NetBeans, what API's are avaliable? Do I have to look into the documentation or is there any kind of help of the IDE?
@PhiLho: I know that it is a broad area. I target no specific platform, the question is an "open one".
I do not have a special functionality I have to include, I have to give an overview.
Hm, do you think I should list GUI elements like described here:
Do you mean with that I could find all on the JavaFX website sth. like adding images or movies, creating animations?
Or should I walk throught the samples on http://www.javafx.com/samples/ and search for examples with multimedia?
So I have to search for all multimedia frameworks which Java offers and all which JavaFX + frameworks will offer to me?
Thanks a lot in advance & Best Regards.

  • WD Unified rendering

    Hi,
I have a small suggestion for SAP We all know, that WD use something called unified rendering - render output by type of client (web browser - html, other client type - different output type). I think, it could be great if WD can generate directly silverlight and flex code for clients where silverlight or flex is available. For others can still generate html + css + javascript.  I think SAP have somethink similar for flash:
    http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/nw-ui?rid=/webcontent/uuid/e088d6c0-a38c-2910-25a4-9a7ae1357ae9 [original link is broken]
but I haven't see any example of this.

    Hi,
I think that silverlight and flash are much more better to develop UI layer for business apps than HTML+CSS and javascript. HTML wasn't developed for creating RIA (rich internet applications - including business apps). Today situation, when we create (business) apps in HTML!!! is a big nonsense (and everyone knows this...)

" Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 beta availability. Optimized for
the Web, Microsoft Silverlight enables developers and designers to
easily use existing skills and Visual Studio and Expression Studio
tools to deliver media experiences and rich interactive
applications. Silverlight works with any back-end Web platform or
technology, seamlessly integrating with existing infrastructure and
applications, including Apache and PHP, as well as JavaScript and
XHTML on the client. Beta 1.0 includes a go-live license, which
means customers can deploy their Silverlight applications in
production. Final availability of Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 is
    scheduled for summer 2007."

I imagine that the Microsoft folks are really proud of
Silverlight -- I mean, they have been fighting the shift that the
Internet has caused from the beginning--pure client/server dies
hard. From the MS-only folks, Silverlight is a breath of fresh AIR.
I am glad that Microsoft has finally seen the RIA wisdom and joined
in with the rest of the world. I mean, how long was Java on the
scene before C# magically appeared; I am glad that they finally saw
    the writing on the wall.
Personally, I don't care if you use Flex or Silverlight; just
that you use whatever for the right reasons. Flex has ample
documentation for me and the example apps far outshine anything
that I have seen in Silverlight. I found Flex to be pretty simple
to learn too. As Silverlight was only announced in April 2007, I
seriously doubt that "shakro" has actually gotten around to doing
any real work -- Flex at least has been around since 2004. I know a
lot of people that are building production-grade Flex/AIR
applications. I don't know anyone that is seriously considering
    using Silverlight.
But then, that is my circle --- take my experience with a
grain of salt. Just also make sure to take the Microsoft fanboys
with a grain of salt too.

  • Adobe Flex, Sun JavaFX & Microsoft Silverlight.

There is none yet official release of JavaFX SDK for Linux, as of now. Is there any schedule for this release? Adobe already has an SDK for all platforms, and also there is this Moonlight implementation of Silverlight for Linux. How about JavaFX?
Anyway, I heard that Sun is actively working on this, so all I have to do is to wait... I trust Sun,

I believe it to be a bunch of crap.
It stems from a New York Times story about Ballmer and Shanatu meeting; which then starts to theorize what they may have talked about and suggests an acqusition was "on the table."  It quotes no sources.  Of course, people took that one line and it extrapolated across the Internet quickly.

  • Flex 4/Spark UI Design

How exactly do "most" Flex developers do this nowadays?  I'm coming from Flex 3 with a lot of experience in Flex Builder 3, where "Design View" and doing basic visual customizations were a no-brainer.  Does anyone even use Design View anymore?  (Please don't tell me we're all hitting "run" to see what the UI looks like.)  Do I need to buy Catalyst or Fireworks or something to make the Spark skinning process manageable?  I'm having a terrible time getting design view to show anything remotely close to what I'd consider an accurate preview.
Basically it seems like porting a real (not a silly "example" demo component on some blog) Flex 2 or 3 app to 4 + Spark is practically impossible without basically starting from scratch on the UI.
Also, Spark has been out for a while now.  I find it odd that I have a hard time finding even a single 'free' or example Spark skin (other than the ones included in FB which nobody can read the fonts on)--are there any free or example Spark skins out there at all?

Well the IDE used to be a little more solid when we had FB3 (i.e. no Spark components and an almost perfectly working Design View mode).  On the upside we have proper refactoring now.  I'm hoping FB 5 will be a clean up of some of the back peddling done in 4 in terms of stability and developer productivity.
I don't know if I'd say Adobe doesn't care, I think they're a much smaller company and they aren't making much income off the technology yet so it's hard to justify big expenses.
IMO they should just open source Livecycle (maybe Flex Builder too), and start selling support contracts to big companies.  To do this they'd have to stop messing around with this flashy-UI and useless "effects/transitions", and start building a more robust business world oriented platform.  The OSS business model seems to be working for Red Hat (not to mention Oracle) and I suspect Google has it in long term planning with all the OSS stuff they do.  You lose the revenue of product sales, but you also get free developer support from the OSS community, and overall it's a good deal for everyone.
Another cool and possibly wildly successful possibility would be to officially support a Java syntax Flash compiler (like J2AS, although no idea how mature that is) within FB.  There's 1 million+ potential developers added to your dev base right there.  Some Java guys are pissy about learning another language and just complain that ActionScript is different, so they go for RIA-imitation tools like GWT just so they can stay in Java.
Silverlight has come far, but there's still a few things Flex has over SL - Flash platform installs for example (and of course Java devs lean towards Flex over SL big time).  Contrast to the fragmented HTML5 world - the complete standard isn't even estimated to be completed until well after 2020 (never mind getting everything working correctly in all these new browsers and hand held devices) - talk about low ambitions!
Honestly, I'd be plenty happy (for now) if I could just make some decent progress with this freaking design mode issue and start being productive again.

  • FLEX WITH BLAZEDS/LCDS

What are the roles and responsibilities of flex developer in blazeds application?
Actually i am a flex developer by profession and having 2.5 years of experience of developing client side flex application with backend support of php using AMFPHP.Till now,our team member(only flex) interact with the backend team members(php members) and got the data as they want.
But now i want to connect flex client to java using BLAZEDS OR LCDS ES , so i want to know that is the procedure will remains the same that flex developers now interact with the backend java developers as they did with php developers or flex developer have to manage the server of their own and write java code themselves.
    Thank you in advance.........

It is usually common for teams with multiple developers to have a division of responsibilities between back-end (Java, PHP, .NET, etc) developers and front-end (HTML, Flex, Silverlight, etc.) developers. This makes it easier to divide up the work on a clear "boarder," so both sides can work in tandem with little interference.
That being said, it may be beneficial for front-end developers to have a little bit of flexibility to make minor changes to the back end if the project is not clearly defined ahead of time. And as always, the feedback loop between designers, front-end developers, and back-end developers, should be kept as short as possible to achieve the greatest flexibility.
Disclaimer: These are my own opinions based on how I work with my own team. Results may vary.

  • WebDynPro ABAP in adobe flex client

    Hi,

    Is it possible.

    > Good to know. That kinda sounds as if the webdynpro app itself will not have to be modified at all. Does this apply to CE webdynpro only or will be NW7.0 webdynpro apps supported the same way? How's the xBCML code generated? Will the CE be an requirement?
That is correct - the apps do not have to be modified in any way.  Web Dynpro was designed years ago with this kind of future in mind.  The application rendering is separated in layers. One of those layers is the UI rendering itself.  It was strickly designed so that we could "plug-in" new rendering engines over time.
So what technically happens is nice bit of OO magic.  There are multiple implementations of each UI elment rendering class, but they all have the same interface.  That way the rendering engine can determine what kind of client it is building the UI for at runtime and substitute a different rendering engine by calling the correct subclass.  The first rendering engine that SAP supplied for Web Dynpro is what is called the Unified Renderer.  This is what produces the HTML and JavaScript UI that we run today in the browser.  In NW 7.0 EnhP1 ABAP and NW 7.1 CE EnhP1 we have actually rewritten this Unified Renderer completely - improving performance and adding in more AJAX functionality.  So this same plug-in rendering technology can be used to seemlessly overhaul the HTML renderer as well.
With this plug-in rendering technology we were able to build an XML based renderer.  This XML formatted output is what we call xBCML (Extensible Business Client Markup Language).  Actually if you compare the two rendering engines it is much easier to build an XML description of the UI then it is to build HTML/JavaScript. This nice, neutral XML description of the UI elements and their properties can then be sent to the client machine over HTTP/HTTPS and interpreted by different technologies.  We use this same XML format within a Flex, Silverlight, and .Net Client Renderer.  This is how SAP has built the Flex Client, Flash Islands, Silverlight Islands, and the NetWeaver Business Client Smart Client Renderer.
On the ABAP side of the house for Web Dynpro we are bringing all of this new rendering technology to the 7.0 release via Enhancement Packages.  The dependency of the Business Suite to run on top of NetWeaver 7.0 is a pretty much a driving factor to make sure that new Web Dynpro technology for ABAP must make it into the 7.0 code line to be effective.
The Java side is less clear.  We have really focused future enhancements to Java Web Dynpro within the 7.1 CE codeline.  Our current plans are to deliver this functionality to WD Java via CE  (some of it is already there in CE 7.1 and some will come later with CE 7.1 EnhP1). I would be a little suprised to see a backport effort to 7.0 Java given the focus on CE.  I realize that this leaves ESS/MSS in a strange location - so if there was customer demand around that application it might be the only thing to lead to a selective backport - but I certainly can't confirm that this will happen.

  • Flex 3 And Section 508 Compliance

    Hey guys,
We are developing a new RIA that has pretty complex screens,
navigation system, modal modules loading on top of others, detailed
interaction with grids, trees, etc. and a requirement for making it
508 compliant has come across my desk.
I've done a bit of research on what Adobe has to offer on
their compliance. The components look to be compliant, but from
what I can tell the compliance works best on simple forms and
screens that don't require a great deal of complexity. I'm also
having trouble finding real world examples of people who have
developed complex RIAs in Flex made for 508 compliance.
Silverlight is also being evaluated, and I'm not sure if they
are any better when it comes to the complexity of a deep RIA.
Does anyone here have any experience developing for 508 in
Flex, and if so can you shed some light on what challenges a
developer might face, or any short comings of Flex that would
prevent it from conforming to 508?
I'd also appreciate any RIAs anyone can point me to that are
508 compliant, they seem to be few and far, even the ones listed at
Adobe, most are broken links or no longer available.
    Thanks.

That is a concern for state governments as well. We (alaska)
are required to make our (outward facing) sites compliant. Flex
will not allow that unless you stick to the basics ... however, if
you do that, then you might as well script in html as the results
    would be basically the same.

  • Which is better as UI technology among Flex and Oracle ADF for oracle SOA suit

We have one application which is using oracle’s Service oriented Architecture (SoA) suite. Currently, there is a debate on the technology for UI in the new architecture that will be rich, easy to maintain, scalable and integrates well with SOA suite. We have two options one is Flex and other is Oracle ADF. UI part contains number of graphs, tabular and charts data. So it would be great if any one suggest which technolgy will be better for UI point of view. Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    I looked at the demo
    http://download.oracle.com/otn_hosted_doc/jdeveloper/11gdemos/ADF112/ADF112.html
    It's interesting.
However, I would point out two things:
1- Before Oracle, Sun failed with UI technologies: there was AWT then Swing then Java FX. None of them was a star. The only place where Sun really won the UI war is the Bluray Disc format.
2- About half of the RIA in the financial/banking industry are developed with Flex, the other half is developed with Silverlight / WPF. HTML 5 is being taken up by some, but you still end up with the usual problem of having to pick up an AJAX framework, and get tied to a vendor anyway in the end. Never heard about any project developed with Oracle ADF yet.

Flex view needs an update! Flex view movies are lagging a lot sound is great and the picture doesn't get to jumpy but it still lags I checked my entire computer for a problem and found nothing and I checked my internet connection and even plugged in my Ethernet cord I called tech support and they said it was a video lagging problem they said there may be a bug or two with flex view and said Verizon might need to update it they also said a new version of silverlight would help as well thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sorry to hear about the flex view troubles. I have sent you a private message to get more information.

  • HTML Content in Flex Web

    Hi
I follow Silverligt - currently version 5 is in RC status - for a while. On their feature list http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/future/ it is written:
"Host HTML content as a Web browser control within the Silverlight application. HTML pages, such as help content or e-mail, can be integrated within the application."
As far as I know this is still not possilbe with Flex, only with AIR. Is this still true? If yes, it would be great if this would be possible soon as well.
    Thanks,

    Hi Mash
    I found a StageWebView here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/media/StageWebVie w.html
Unfortunately - at least this is what the documentation says - it is AIR only.

  • Flex Full Screen

    Hi,
I was hoping to add some functionality to my application to enable the user to open it in full screen mode to free up some real estate. Getting to full screen mode is working fine but I was a bit surprised to see that all keyboard interaction (bar the esc function) is disable in full screen mode.
Out of curiosity, whats the rationale behind this? Is it a security issue? Can people be tricked into not being able to close full screen or something?
    Is this configurable?
Its a bit annoying. Flex is for building RIA's, most of which would require user interaction. The keyboard is a major source of interaction. SUrely it would have been better to solve whatever problem requires this "hack" in favour of just disabling the functionality?!?!

Had a feeling it was that. Its a real shame in my opinion that instead of trying to overcome the issue in some way, the functioanlity is instead removed.
I had a bit of a look around and Silverlight for example has a "trusted" sites option. Surely something like that would be better than just an alomost blanket disabling of keyboard functionality. Like I said flex was built with user interaction in mind. Granted it runs on the flash player which also serves other purposes but...
