i am having dropped call issues when i never had them on the original
i live in northern suburbs of Chicago
i have read extensively the new sim card may be "EUREKA"
how do i check the numbers to see which one i have installed?

If you're installing it correctly (see http://kb.hpwebos.com/wps/portal/kb2/common/article/43543_en.html#N10284), then I'd wager something is wrong with the phone and will need an exchange.

If your iPhone is locked to a wireless provider, only that wireless provider
can unlock it. Contact the wireless provider in Hong Kong to see if they
offer unlocking and if you qualify.
If your iPhone is locked to an AppleID that you do not know, return it for
a refund as it is useless. Only the person whose AppleID was used for
activation can remove the lock. There is no workaround for Activation Lock.
If neither of the above is what you are facing, provide more detail so someone
may offer a solution.

Try resetting the phone. Hold the home and power lock button until the Apple logo appears.If that does not work, turn the phone off and take the SIM out and then put it back in.
If that still does not work, you may have a defective SIM, in which case you will need a new one from your carrier.

You could try removing the sim card and cleaning it - then put it back.
I assume that there is supposed to be a sim card in your model of iPhone 5 ?

Put in a supported SIM from the carrier that locked the iPhone.

Talk to the carrier it is locked to. They are the only ones that can unlock it.

you need to contact the provider of your old phone and find out 1) if the provider unlocks phones and 2) what the procedure is to get the phone unlocked.

This happened to me recently. I had to turn the phone on and off twice. I also had to press on the top of the frame of the phone where the sim card is. My issue actually happened when the phone had not been dropped. Good luck.

It's a very common problem, you can find a discussion here by searchin phrase "Invalid SIM card" or what ever your iPhone tells.
Its NOT related to locked or unlocked device.
