I'm travelling to Costa Rica at the end of the week. Rather than pay the roaming fees I'd like to buy a SIM card from the local telco. Will my S3 work if I pop in a SIM card from someone other than Verizon?

I'm still not convinced your iPad is locked. Borrow someone else's (iPad) nanoSIM card if you can. Test it with your iPad. If it works, contact your mobile network provider in Costa Rica.

I've recently bought a Palm Pre2... as I should say this is the best smart phone i've had; i'm very frustrated by the fact that I cannot download anything from the Catalogl this because it is not open yet for Costa Rica.... c'mon!?!?!?

If you have activated your phone using SIM card from Costa Rica you dont have an option get applications from US even if you try and sign in again using US Simcard. Partial erase, full erase, nor WebOS Doctor can fix this.
The device record is created once after creating your palm profile and this cannot be changed afterwards. Your first good activation will be for that device, no matter what you use next time you activate.

you could buy it somewhere in Europe. I know Apple sells them unlocked here in Germany and if I am not mistaken also (among others) in France and Italy.
Yet, as Peter wrote, the warranty can become a problem. Not sure whether a one country only rule goes for the European Community as well though.
As for the price, the 16 GB model costs 679,- € (equals roughly 550 £). Currently there is an average delivery time of 4 to 5 weeks.
LTE connections will not work with Orange or Vodafone. Only EE is about to offer a compatible LTE network. DC-HSPA and regular HSPA+ will work fine.

The SIM cards are different sizes.
Just get a new one from your carrier, if the iphone does not already have one.

but this come at the cost of the phone only being able to work
with the carrier this is called a sim lock
the only people who can remove a sim lock is the carrier which

Decided to do a Restore of iPhone 4 after several unresolved issues. Everything fine until reboot when iTunes tells me that the SIM card is not recognized. I have found numerous posts and discussiopns about this; I have removed SIM card, restarted, re inserted card, reset phone all to no avail....do I really need to buy a new SIM card?

Was the phone purchased new in the US from either Apple or AT&T? If not it is locked to some other carrier and there is nothing you can legitimately do about it.

You need to use a credit card with a billing address in the same country as the delivery address. Since there's no Apple Print Store for Costa Rica I assume you're using the United States print store. Therefore you'll need a credit card with a billing address in the US.

Can I take my SIM Card out of my 3GS and insert it in another 3GS?   My daughter dropped my phone in the toilet tonight.   Can I take my SIM card that I've removed and simply put it in another 3GS phone (a relative's old phone) and it work?

While my turned off phone is buried in a bag of rice, is it possible that I can take the now removed SIM card and put it in another 3GS for the interim? I have an other 3GS (my mom's old one that we use as an iTouch for the kids) on hand that is attached to my apple ID.
If this is possible, is it as simple as taking out the SIM card in my mom's old phone and replacing it with mine?   And does this mess anything up when / if I'm able to salvage my toilet phone?   Can I take the SIM card and simply put it back in my phone after having used it in the other one?

Put the SIM in the other phone and Restore it from Backup in iTunes. If the old one revives reverse the process.

Probably, but it's always recommended you use supported carriers. Prepaid is a rather iffy subject, you probably won't get a whole lot of help here, but I suggest buying a StraightTalk Nokia E71 (has to be this phone), and finding a guide elsewhere for the prepaid activation.
