Sim Card in Italy

We are in Italy and our phone does not have a sim card - can one be purchased here - is there a way around this, please help

A prepaid card from there MAY work if international services was activated prior to going. You would end up with a different phone number though while you are there.

  • Micro Sim cards in Italy and India

I am going abroad from the UK and want use my IPad1 can anybody recommend a sim card for Italy (Venice short of WiFi cafes, sensibly)
    Plus India in January

I don't have experience with this, but have read posts from people who have done this.  The issue I've seen people have difficulty with is actually buying a sim card in Europe from a carrier with a US credit card.  If you have any friends over there, they might be able to help you overcome this obstacle.

  • Can I buy sim card in Italy and use in my iPad 2?

I'm traveling to Italy and am exploring my cell phone options. I know that my iPhone is locked, so I am wedded to AT&T, an expensive proposition. It is my understanding that my 3G iPad is not locked. Correct me if I am wrong. That raises the possibility that I could get an Italian sim and use my iPad as a communication device. Will this work? Has anyone tried it? If not, does anyone have any other suggestions besides the obvious ones like Skype?

  • Use of another SIM card when traveling to Italy

Can I get a prepaid SIM card In Italy to use on my IPad? Does it have to be unlocked first? If so, do I have to contact AT&T. Any help is greatly appreciated.

David, This is very helpful. Would you expand on this? You obviously have an iPad 1 3G. Is that right? Was it originally purchased in the US? If so, it must have an AT&T SIM card. Is that right? If I understand you right you traveled to Germany, bought a prepaid SIM card there, inserted it in your iPad 3G and it worked. Were there any functions at all that would not work with the German pre-paid SIM card? Did you have to change any settings to receive your email on the iPad with the German pre-paid SIM installed?

Compare the roaming charges from the German carrier with services like those:

Otherwise buy a pre-paid micro-SIM card for the iPad in each country you visit.

You're phone is locked to a carrier. You will need to contact the carrier you got you're phone from to have them unlock it.

  • Re: Use of another SIM card when traveling to Italy

Can I ask a similiar question. I bought an Ipad 1 3G in the US last year. Took it back to Australia and have been using it with a local 3G Network there - no problems. I am now back in the US and tried to get an AT&T micro sim today to use for the month I am here and they are saying I cannot get a prepaid card with AT&T because I dont have a Credit Card with a US Billing Address. Seems obsurd .... can anyone help me .... I really really really rely on my iPad and need 3G access while i am here for the month ....
    Greatly appreciated in advance ...

    G'Day Jamie;
Just go to a Apple Store and request a replacement micro-sim card. Go to a place that sells pre-paid credit cards - need one that has $25.00 or a little more. That pre-paid card is registered in the U.S. Just use your hotel/motels address for the registration. You're all set. As they would say in Australia "Easy Peasy."
    By-the-way, welcome to the U.S.
    Enjoy.

  • BlackBerry phone to be used in a country with a different SIM card

    Hello Everyone
I have got a BB phone which was purchased through o2 retailer (english mobile operator) in the United Kingdom as I lived there for a long time. I am back in Italy where I hoped to continue and use it by simply inserting an italian SIM card. I tested few SIM cards of friends and went to an italian retailer (Vodafone which is also known in UK) but apparently my BB doesn't recognize the new SIMs becuase it is probably clocked by o2... Does anyone know whether it can be fixed somehow? Or do I have to go back to o2? Or what are the possibilities.
Thank you all very much for your help.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
There's nothing to add to your BB per se. Using the BB-specific services is a matter of your carrier providing those to you. And there are some things that must happen for them to do so.
Any BB can be used on any carrier that runs the same radio frequencies that the BB is capable of (and I've no idea if your's are such). But, to bring a BB onto a carrier network that they did not sell to you, there are several hurdles to cross:
    1) The carrier must say "yes" to the fact...they own their network and have every right to say what devices will be allowed to connect to it. If they say "no", then that's the end of it.
    2) You must be sure that your BB is properly unlocked from it's originally manufactured-for carrier...see this helpful thread for details:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/General-BlackBerry-Functions-and/Unlocking-your-BlackBerry-Gu...
    3) You must get all of your voice level services functioning on the carrier, before you even try anything about data
    4) You must subscribe, from the carrier, to an adequate data plan to enable the BB-proprietary services you desire
5a) If the carrier directly supports your specific model BB, then you can proceed with registering the BB onto their network, generating the proper Service Book delivery to your BB, and proceeding to function.
5b) But, if the carrier does not directly support your specific model number of BB, then the challenges are much greater as most carrier systems will not deliver, to the BB, the necessary service books to enable the BB-proprietary data services, even if you do subscribe to them.
So, depending on all of that, your BB may or may not ever fully function on that carrier network. It can be quite tricky to accomplish, especially if 5b applies. So take a look at all of that and decide how you wish to proceed. Most folks wind up just buying a new BB if 5b applies.
Good luck and let us know!

How can I setup my iphone 5s without a SIM card?

You cannot set up an iPhone unless there is a SIM card in it.

  • 3G in Spain - Can't Buy SIM Card

Traveling in Spain this month, attempted to get SIM card and monthly contract for iPad after arrival in Madrid (went to a Vodafone store). Clerk was adamant that we could not get a SIM or contract wthout showing a Spanish or EU ID (seemed amazed that we did not have a EU "passport" even though we made it clear we were only tourists).
Has anyone else encountered this weird, restrictive approach in Spain? From other posts in this forum, I gather that things work much more easily in other European countries, e.g., Germany, Italy.
So we're stuck with AT&T's exorbitant roaming plan for a paltry amount of data...

maybe if they believed you wanted a full tariff with them
that may require one living there or they'd have a hard time getting people to pay the bill each month
not sure about spain but most parts of europe sell prepaid sim at each gas-station

  • What can I do if my Iphone doesn't read the SIM card?

I bought an Iphone 4S in France because I had a gift card but now I live in Italy and It doesn't read my Sim card. Someone told me that I have to unlock It, but I don't know if it is true. What can I do?

Contact the wireless carrier that the iPhone is locked to and
ask them if they offer unlocking and if you qualify. Only the
wireless carrier to which the iPhone is locked can unlock it.

  • Cany you buy an iPhone sim only in Italy?

I'm in GB and am regular traveller to Italy, but of course roaming and data charges cost a fortune.
I thought wouldn't it be good if I could just replace my UK O2 contract SIM card when I'm in Italy with a PAYG linked to TIM or Vodaphone. Can't see anything obvious on their websites, but I'm still struggling with Italian.

No, you cannot. The UK iPhone is locked to O2 and won't work with a non-O2 SIM.

  • Unable to send BBM & PIN to a specific contact only with foreign sim card

With just one contact on my 9700 (TIM Italy) I suddenly can't bbm or pin. He can send me messages, but not me to him. Pin says service blocked.
if i remove my sim card and i use one from the same country as him, it works!!
i'm in italy and he's in south america and when im there, using a local sim card it works perfectly.
    somebony can help me?
i've contact the both carriers and they say it is all ok with my and his data plan, i've contact rim trought twitter but they didn't help me.
