SIM free Firmware availability in the UK

I thought that getting a 'SIM free' phone would avoid the awful 'carrier delays' & my updates would come straigt-from SONY.
Is this correct ?

  • Does sim-free iphone lock to the network?

    HI all,
I've been asking different question here recently connected to iphones and now I have one more question. Does sim-free iphone lock to the carrier of the first sim used in it? I've been using mine for a while and now i'd like to change mobile carrier. So, aren't there going to be any problems with it? Thanks in advance.

Apple does not use the term "SIM free" in any of their marketing materials.  If you bought the phone at Carphone Warehouse in the UK, it will lock to the first UK carrier used to activate it. It can not be activated on a foreign network unless unlocked by the UK carrier used to activate it. Other than that, so far as I'm aware, phones are "locked" or "unlocked". I don't know of anywhere else where things are done like they are at carphone warehouse in the UK.

  • Is there a sim free iphone 5 in the usa?

    Hello everyone,
like the title says im looking for a sim free iphone, without a carrier?
    thank you in advance

Currently Apple UK and Apple Canada are offering unlocked iP5 (when they have stock )
    Not available in US yet

  • Does sim-free iPhone 6 support the 4G of cmcc?

CMCC, China Mobile Communications Corporation is using LTE-TDD as 4G, which most of iPhones does not support. I've heard that the sim-free iPhone 6 might be fit with the 4G of CMCC, is that true? And some of my friends told me that iPhones start with A1586 can support the 4G of CMCC. Does sim-free iPhone 6 has iPhones start with A1586? Thanks!

  • When will the iPhone 5S be available SIM-Free in the US?

I recently have taken a liking to the iPhone, since all my life I have used Nokia phones and naturally one is excited about getting their first iPhone. However, I travel to Europe every year for an extended period of time and I usually require to switch SIM cards which makes Nokia phones efficient. I was expecting for the iPhone 5S to be released SIM-Free like its counterpart the 5C, but that was not the case.
I would really like to know a close estimate or any estimate in the matter of when to expect the unlocked iPhone 5S to be available to the public via the Apple Store? I heard the predecessor received an unlocked version past November 2012 despite being released on September 2012. If this is the case, I might just buy the iPhone 5C or the iPhone 5, or buy it from another country.
Thanks for anyone who can answer this question

Contract Free means you don't need to start a new plan.  You know,  "Contract FREE", as in NO CONTRACT.
It just happens to come packaged with an unactivated T-Mobile sim but that's it.
You can take the T-Mobile Sim out and place the one you want in it.
As far as getting locked to the first carrier I think that's not the case, otherwise ther disclaimer:
When you travel internationally, you can use a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5s from a local GSM carrier
    Would be entirely innaccurate.

  • I am extremely upset. I purchased my iPad in SA and I am traveling in Greece. When I want to make use of the free apps, I get a message that the app is not available in the SA store. What is the point of having an iPad if you cannot use it worldwide?

I am extremely upset. I purchased my iPad in SA and now I am in Greece. I cannot download free apps as I get a message that the apps are not available in the SA store and only in US stores. When I change to the US store the same thing happens. What is the point of having an iPad if I cannot use it worldwide??? I feel that I wasted my money purchasing it as I specifically purchased it to use when I travel. How can I get access to all the available apps and why are they restricted.

You can use your iPad worldwide. However, each AppleID is tied to
a specific country's store. To use the AppStore in any country, you
must be in that country and have a credit/debit card issued by a financial
institution in that country with a verified billing address in that country.
It is the developer's choice which AppStores he makes his app available
from, and some countries prohibit certain apps.
To make a purchase from the US store (including downloading a free app
available in the US store), you must be in the US and have card issued
in the US with verified billing address in the US.
You can use your purchases from the SA store worldwide, but you
cannot make purchases in other than the SA store unless you meet
    the aforesaid conditions.

  • Why is the price of an unlocked iPhone 4 is the same as sim-free?

In September 2010 I purchased all'Apple Store in San Francisco one iPhone4 sim-free, before I asked the seller if you could use it in Italy and he answered yes, but does not work with the Italian telephone operators GSM.
I only found out after my phone only works with operator AT&T.
Why is the price of an iPhone 4 unlocked is the same as Iphone 4 sim-free?
I would be unlocked for free from Apple, I have paid to have a iPhone4 unusable in Italy, thanks
    Bye

The U.S. Apple store publicized as the type of Sim-free iPhone, and not as a contract-free.
Now in the Apple store site, including the FAQ for purchasing iPhone4 unloked, is written:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC603LL/A?mco=MjI4NTM2NTM
"Why does the price of the unlocked iPhone differ from the price of a contract-based iPhone?
Carriers typically subsidize the purchase price of the phone when purchased with a service contract. By purchasing your iPhone unlocked, you are not committing to a service contract up front, so you can use any micro-SIM card from a supported GSM carrier, including your current one"
I wonder why I pay the same price as a phone but an identical unlocked, it is a fraud

  • Sim Free N70/N80

I'm thinking of getting a N70 and wanted to know if anyone has a sim free one.
I've read that the ones on the Orange network have been having problems and wondered if sim free one's have the same problems or not.
Also which firmware version should I be looking for, as I don't know if it is different on a sim free version than the Orange network version.
Lastly, I know that the N80 is not available yet, but do you think it would be a better idea getting sim free one, considering all the problems the latest phones are having with the networks playing with the software.
    Many thanks.

    Hi everyone.
The Nokia software updater, and Nokia Service engineers will only apply firmware that is authorised by your network provider. If your network provider has not approved an update, then we can only advise that you wait till they do or contact them for details of when they will approve the new firmware. Unfortunately this is part of your contractual agreement with your network, that you use the supplied handset as it has come. Nokia can not make change to a Network handset with out the approval of the Network it self.
This topic has been discussed many times and a simple search will point out that this is the case. This has always been the case.

Not sure if this phone is available on networks other than Three at the moment.
Don't know what version to look out for, as you said, may be Three's version that is having problems, but as the phone is only out on Three, there's no way of knowing how Nokia is setting the Version numbers for the phones.

  • Mobileconfig for unsupported carriers on SIM Free phones

Currently my company has several branches outside of the United States. We purchase SIM Free phones to use on unsupported carriers when a supported carrier is not available locally.
We also build mobileconfig files to control security, VPN, Exchange access, and APN configurations. All of the services we subscribe to includes tethering. We have access to the tethering APNs and when configured manually, it works flawlessly. The problem is when we create custom profile configuration, the tethering disappears but the data access still works. Today, our config files has no APNs which leaves the configuration open for individual users to enter manually. We would like however to include all of the configurations into one profile or multiple profiles pushed to the phones to include the carrier data APN, Tethering APN, and all of our internal configuration. Is it possible to do via mobileconfig files?

  • Question for *SIM FREE* N95 owners.

    Hi.
If you have bought a generic SIM free version of the N95 with no network branding please post the colour of your handset and your product code (underneath IMEI on label underneath battery, also listed on the label on your nokia box)
I am trying to compile a list of the different product codes.
    cheers

Sent the Orange back as it did not do VOIP which they assured me it would DOH
Now got a Sim Free unbranded not locked Light Graphite N95
(silver to me and you) Still on Orange with same contract just sim free so it can do VOIP
What is the product Code 0548364 its not the generic Euro 1 and the software update was very late compared to some sim frees
The box was unbranded as is the phone with no branded software i can see just one small code on the box starting cpw I guess is Carphone warehouse UK SO I would guess it could be the UK sim free rather than the European sim free?
What is the O2 software so if I can see if its part of that
But after the update to 6.11 there is still no branding
I chose it for the colour dont like the plum or sand
any ideas product Code 0548364 and why the update is so far behind the others?

  • Free chunk available

    Hi all,
In my PROD so many times I found that the tatol size of a tablespace remains is fair enough but the largest chunks availabe is very less and becouse of that it happens that a transaction fails and gives error in alert log file like:
ORA-1654: unable to extend index APPS.RCV_RECEIVING_SUB_LED_N3 by 27310 in tablespace GLD
and as a workaround I need to resize it database / add datafile and issue resolved.
But before add/resize of datafile when I checked the datafile free space available and the largest chunk is found:
    select TABLESPACE_NAME,
    sum(BYTES/1024/1024) Total_free_space,
    max(BYTES/1024/1024) largest_free_extent
    from dba_free_space
    where tablespace_name='GLD'
    group by TABLESPACE_NAME;
    TABLESPACE_NAME TOTAL_FREE_SPACE LARGEST_FREE_EXTENT
    GLD 5516.0546875 9.765625
I thin 5516 MB of free space is fair enough for a tbs. but still I am getting error to this tbs.
can any body give any idea what wrong with this.
    Thanks in ADV !

    Hi,
I have done the same. There is a sql script running on contab and let me knwo through mail the status of the tbs (name, %use, total size, total free, largest chunk avai etc).
Now there is a tbs (still not gone in any error) whose size is :
    TABLESPACE_NAME % used TOT_SIZE_MB TOT_FREE_MB PCT_FREE LARGEST_CHUNK CHUNKS_FREE
    ENID 88.25 750 529.375 11.75 29.38 1
Now within 2 or 3 days this will go in error as discribed above and as a workabound I need to resize/add datafile. You can see there is good space free.
Now as per the logic if a record is bigger with this largest chunk availabe wiil go in error becoz it needs the big chunk to store in db block.
Becouse of this I need to know that is ther any way to increase this largest_chunk for this tbs to avoid the error in future.
    Thanks

  • Sim-Free Country Variants in Australia Still Waiti...

We already have two carrier variants released, how is it possible that sim-free Country Variants Phones are unable to get the updates. Surely these are tested before they are given to carriers to test and approve so why is it the sim-free Australian variants are still waiting for approval.
These Phones are not tied to any carrier, so surely if one carrier says its fine for use should be all that is needed to release it to all sim-free phones. We already have Telstra (the biggest Telco in Australia) approve and release it for the Lumia 920, And the Boost Carrier (part of Optus in Australia, the second biggest in carrier in Australia) allow and release for the Lumia 820's, So why are Sim-free phones still waiting for approval.
Or have these phones just been forgotten as in previous updates for other nokia phones in the past

  • IPhone 5s sim-free is neverlock?

Hello, anybody knows, iphone 5s sim-free edition is neverlock?

No, because you can't buy an unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile.  Sim free does NOT mean the same thing as unlocked.
If you want an unlocked phone, then you will have to buy it directly from Apple.  Apple is the only one that sells unlocked phones that you can use with any sim card.

  • Nokia UK too slow to release firmwares for sim fre...

Why are Nokia UK being so slow in releasing a firmware for the UK sim free variant? I specifically bought an unbranded phone so I did not have to wait for a network branded update that may or may not happen. I read there is some customisation needed for the UK variant. What specifically is different? I mean the UK is one of the biggest markets for mobile phones, should we not be high on your priority list?
Considering this is your flagship phone, I am pretty disappointed with support thus far. Also in case anyone is wondering I know this is a user to user forum, but I also know Nokia employees do post from time to time!

    Hi Recall,
I don't work for Nokia so I can't comment on exactly whythey delay the release of firmware into the UK market but I do work in thehandset test industry and can explain the possible reason(s).  I'mactually writing this from my hotel in Brasilia where I'm testing a device notas 'complicated' as the N97 and this is still taking 2 weeks.
I would like to point out that even the smallest changein software can have a big impact on the rest of the code so thorough testingis required.  We call this regression testing in the industry and with theN97 device being so feature and technology rich it can take time to testproperly.  Everything, and I mean everything has to be tested.  Togive you an idea you are looking at GSM, GPRS, EDGE, R99 and R5 testingincluding calls, SMS, MMS, EMS, Email, Contacts, Bluetooth.  incoming calls, outgoing calls, international calls, call forwarding, call barring then all theusability and product testing such as the GUI features and add-ons specific tothe N97.  Now I have some reservations with Nokia on the N97 as some ofthe failures we see on the device you would have thought would have been caughtduring this type of testing previously.  When you get customized versionsof code too, say Vodafone and the likes' all this needs done with that too.
As you say the UK is a big market for Nokia but that alsomeans they need to be extra vigilant on the quality of their software as anymajor failure could have a huge cost impact for device recall/service etc forNokia.  However this is something you would have thought Nokia would haveplanned for during the release schedule of all their devices.
The other point is they may have found a bug in the codewhich only is apparent in the UK (or on UK networks) which would mean thesoftware they released they done so as an interim solution to other countriesto address the list of issues and upgrades while working on a newer version tobe released which includes a fix for the UK failure. This is just hypotheticalbut I've seen it happen before.
Sorry I've not answered you question with a direct answerbut it may help you, and others understand why we sometimes see such delays inthe release(s).
