Simcity 4 and OS 10.4

Since I upgraded to OS 10.4 my simcity 4 operates so slowly as to be unplayable. Any suggestions on a fix for this?
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I have the same problem, though rest assured, I know someone else with a G5 who has succeeded using it. Find out where all its files are stored, and install it from scratch. I suspect data corruption. Just haven't gotten around to finding all the files. If you find which those are, please let me know.

  • Trying to decide - different circumstances?

It's been a while since I've visited the forums
So I'll be moving to Bahrain in about 10 months and I'll be there for a year with the military. I don't anticipate deploying any further than Bahrain, but that's always a consideration afloat.
But I want to upgrade my MB with a MBP - the question is should I get a 15" or 17".
I use Aperture extensively and have found the MB and iMac lacking recently. I also love SimCity and that's not been doing well on either platform at all!
If I get the 15" I was thinking about getting a display but wouldn't quite yet with the 17" but that wouldn't be a bad idea.
I'd be keen to know some of your thoughts.

    Thanks for the responses...
I'm still deciding - but I will wait to look at the new 17" MBP before I plunge.
One thing I find fantastic is the ease of switching out a hard drive on the 15" - just open a panel and slide it in. How easy would it be to do on the new 17" MBP?
Does anyone know if the 15" 'unofficially' supports up to 8GB of RAM? That's another consideration I hadn't thought about until just now looking over the tech specs.
    I just don't know!
    Pros for 17:
    -Large screen real estate
    -512MB Graphics Memory
    -Supports up to 8GB RAM
    Pros for 15:
    -User replaceable hard drive
    -Smaller foot print
    -User replaceable battery
Hmmm....still have a little bit to think about it - the tax return isn't coming until 13 Feb! Any more thoughts?
    Thanks all - Chris

  • Apps crash or don't launch

Since I buyed the iPhone, some of the apps don't work at all. Most of them are the very heavy ones. Kotoba sometimes doesn't even lauch, and if it does, all I can do is type a letter and then the app crashes.
PlayGod is the same thing. Only after about 3 seconds after waiting for the game to charge, it crashes up and returns to the main menu.
Now I have SimCity, and its my number one, favorite app. The problem is it gets crashed every 5 minutes. And that makes me go crazy.
If anyone could please help me. They told me to delete some apps and I already did it, but nothing changed >_<

    1. Reset the phone by pressing both the home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple icon appears (ignore the red slider).
    2. If still not working, restore the phone in iTunes - first from a backup and if necessary as a new iPhone.
    3. If none of the above helps, you need to get warranty service for a possible hardware problem. In the USA, this is done by appointment with an Apple Store Genius Bar. (I don't know who provides virtual warranty service in you location, Sim City.)

  • GE60 lagging

The PC works fine with almost everything. Old games like Star Wars Battlefront 2 works perfectly. However, other games like Magika lags. No FPS drop, just that the mouse and game take time to react to me moving the mouse. For eksampel, Dead Space 3 (lowest graphic settings) flows perfectly, but if I move the mouse, it takes nearly 1 second for the game to respond. Ths happens to almost every new-ish game. I am terrible at everything technical, so any solutons will have to be very newb friendly :P
Some new games don't lag, however, like SimCity, and I can run some games, like Minecraft, with some pretty big mods, like GSL shaders, which make it look pretty fabulous.
Thank you for any and all suggestions that might help
And yes, this happens both with the powerplug in and out of the PC.

do you play it on extended screen via HDMI?
also have you tried to lower in game details? too high resolutions and graphic options will cause the same lag
and do you use discrete card while this hapends? does the turbo button lights?
I get the same problem as the Topic Creator. I also have a Lenovo mouse, but it's a wireless mini keyboard mouse. The lag happens mostly in Windows 8 desktop mode. The cursor would stick and as I roll the ball to move it, it suddenly shoots all the way across the screen.
I don't know what a discreet card is either, but I am using my Notebook on an external HDMI display (LG LCD TV, not PC monitor).

  • IMac getting selective about what discs it will accept

    I have a 17inch iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, running OS X 10.4.11.
Earlier today, I went to the Apple Store and bought the box set recommended to me for upgrading the system software to 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
The iMac's optical drive will not read the disc containing the Snow Leopard upgrade. To make sure that it wasn't completely hosed, I tested it with some other discs that I have. It was able to accept and read discs such as the one for SimCity and Civilization, as well as Microsoft Office and Quicken. A random sample of my audio CDs revealed the iMac will read them without difficulty. However, I observed that some of the DVD-ROMs that I have burned in the past to archive my photos are no longer accepted, nor will it accept a random sample of any of the commerically produced DVDs that I have.
    In short:
    Audio discs: OK
    Data discs: mixed results
    DVDs: forget it about it
Anyone have any ideas what might be going on?

I think den.thed is along the right lines with this being a possible hardware issue. Problematic drives are going to have problems with DVDs first, along with any kind of burned media. While your computer is relatively young it isn't unusual for superdrives (fancy name but basically a DVD drive) to start having problems after 4 years or so. You can buy a cleaning disc for about US $10 though I have not had much success with them. When my drive started failing I bought a new one (Pioneer drives are Mac compatible) for about $30 and replaced it myself in about 15 minutes. If you are so inclined you'll probably get input on that in this forum (I happened to wander in from the G4 tower side of things . ). One place to start shopping is [www.macsales.com] You can get an idea of prices and they have "upgrade" guides to suggest parts as well as videos on how to do it yourself.
One thing to consider though is if the computer is still under warranty in any way you might need to have it done by a certified technician. If it is not under warranty and you want to try cleaning it, I'd just get a disc and do it yourself. A technician will likely charge you more for the time than a brand new drive would cost you. I also can't think of a single case of many very similar posts on here where I have seen somebody report success with one of those cleaners (it must happen some time but I haven't seen a case).

  • Which macbook pro retina should i buy?

Hello guys! Im really not sure which macbook should i buy:
    1) Maccbook pro retina early 2013 with 256gb/8gb/hd 4000 or
    2) Later 2013 macbook pro retina with 128gb/4gb/iris graphics.
Im going to use it for photography and to edit videos, but nothing professional. And also for basic stuff that i need in university or even to play some games like simcity and the sims 3/4..
    What do u think guys?

I see you are choosing from the refurbished units.  Good move.
I would concentrate on RAM size, SSD size and of course price.  In my opinion those are bigger factors than the difference in GPUs.
4 GB of RAM is sufficient of most programs but some applications do better in 8 GB.  You cannot upgrade RAM and memory demands are likely to grow over time.  So 8 GB is future proofing the system.
A big question is do you need 128 or 256 GB of SSD?  How much storage do you use now?  How much more are you likely to use (more music, photos, videos…)?  If this will be near 100 GB then I would opt for 256 GBs of SSD.  The SSDs are not upgradeable while under warranty.
    Refurbished, Feb-2013, 8 GB, 256 GB, Intel HD Graphics 4000: $1,230.  <<<- #1 In your list
Refurbished, Oct-2013, 4 GB, 128 GB, Intel Iris Graphics: $1,100. <<<- #2 in your list
For the difference of $170 I would choose the 8/256 GB model.

  • SimCity 4 won't work with Parallels 4.0

I bought a new MacBook Pro (unibody construction) and installed Parallels 4.0 on it so I could play PC games like SimCity 4. After I successfully installed SM4, I tried to play it, and I kept getting an error message that said I don't have the right type of video card to support the game. I called Apple and after going through my computer's specs, found that I should have enough video RAM to play the game. The Apple guy was at a loss and couldn't help. He suggested I contact Parallels support. Before I do that, has anyone experienced the same problem?
    My MBP's video specs are:
    Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
    Type: Display
    Bus: PCI
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
SimCity 4 requires a minimum of 128 MB RAM, so my 256 should be enough.
    Thanks for any advice.

Please post questions regarding Parallels on the Parallels forums:

  • Good tracking speed, CHEAP, big, quality and reliable mouse for macbook pro

    Hi mac people,
I need a mouse for this all purposes:
1)Reduce using the build in trackpad(to protect my built in trackpad)
2)Sometime I want casual gaming(Simcity,ps1 game, some other point and shoot game)
3)I 'm 183cm tall, so my hand is quite big, and I use my macbook pro as my primary pc, so need a all day use mouse(but I use my mac only about 3 hour a day).
    4)as mentioned in title.
    Thanks everyone for sharing advice!!!!!

As everyone's hands are different, I'd suggest going to any store with computer accessories and simply trying the feel of whatever brands of mice they sell.

  • The Sims 2, SimCity 4?

Hello. I have just recently bought a 2.0 GHz C2D Macbook with 2GB of RAM. and i should recieve it by fedex tomorrow.
i don't play computer games all that much but there are two that i absolutly love:
    The Sims 2
    and
    SimCity 4
is the macbook capable of playing these games? and how is the overall performance? thank you all.

In theory yes, but it may run slowly.
I don't recall those games using too much graphics.
Also, there's a Mac version of The Sims 2.

  • Simcity 4 on intel mac

Hi. I bought Simcity 4 for my intel mac and can't find a serial number on the case or anywhere. Is this normal for the Aspyr games? Not sure how essential it is to register the game but I just wanted to register on the site. I looked on the CD, on and inside the case and manual and there's nothing there. Has anyone else found this?
Also I was told in the Apple shop there should be a patch for it but I can't find anything anywhere. The game seems to run ok but I thought I should install it anyway if there is one. I'm guessing I might need a serial number to install this though too.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I was trying to register it on the Simcity website so I can download stuff for the game. I had a look at the Aspyr website and it does ask for a serial number when registering. There doesn't seem to be a patch and the game seems to run ok so I suppose I don't really need to register.
    Thanks for answering

  • Computer freezes and shuts down automatically

    Hi,
I'm playing SimCity 4 and it looks like the CD is just fine but my mini mac keeps freezing up & then shuts down automatically. Computer meets system requirements of OS X 10 & up, Can it be the memory? If it is, can I get more virtual memory & how? Can it be something else? I know very little about my mini mac. Thanks for the help.

Guess the first question would be, how much memory does the Mini currently have? Below are the specification required to play the game:
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.2.3 or later
CPU Processor: PowerPC G3 or later
    CPU Speed: 500MHz or faster
    Memory: 256 MB or higher
Hard Disk Space: 2.4GB free disk space
Video Card (ATI): Radeon 7500 or better
Video Card (NVidia): GeForce2 MX or better
Video Memory (VRam): 32 MB or higher
    Media Required: CD Drive
It should have at least these requirements, so you could try to reinstall the graphics drivers.

  • Is the new simcity compatible with any of the macbook pros

  • SimCity on MacBook Air

So, I just bought my MacBook Air a month ago and I really want to play SimCity in it. When I checked the system requirements, generally, the specs of MacBook Air are compatible with those requirements, however, I saw this note below those requirements saying:
Mac Product Compatibility: In general, most Late-2009 iMacs, mid-2009 MacBook Pros, and mid-2010 MacBooks meet the SimCity's minimum specifications. Other systems not listed here may be able to run SimCity, but can experience graphical or performance issues and would require an OS upgrade.
So, will it work fine on MacBook Air?

Deleted- link was to a thread you have already posted on - sorry.

  • Time and Date Issues

Ok every time I turn on my iPod Touch its the wrong date and time! I have no idea whats going on. But ever sense I bought simcity this has been happening!! Then at about noon it changes to the right time and date! Thanks A lot for your help!

    F Shippey wrote:
Say WHAT? That's totally ridiculous advice.
it USED to be true. but the ipod touches contain a different type of battery to the older ones, which actually benefit from 'topping up' the charge regularly rather than letting it run down.

  • Help me get Aspyr to patch SimCity 4 (for PB 12")!

I have been in contact with Aspyr tech support for 3 months now. It's a long story, so please bear with me ...
The issue: SimCity 4 became unplayable after updating to 10.4.3 on my 12" PowerBook (10.4.4 is the same). The game will launch, but plays extremely, unplayably slow, and is riddled with graphics anomalies. Yes, I am aware of the speed/graphics difficulties with this game as reported in the past; this issue is different, clearly some sort of bug. The game did play normally up to and including 10.4.2.
Yes, I could install a partition on my HDD with a different version of the OS, just to play SC4, but I'd really rather not waste all that space just for this. The problem should be fixed: this is a problem with a currently shipping software product that affects currently shipping hardware that Aspyr publicly claims is compatible. I've tried every other workaround they suggested, to no avail.
Aspyr has recognized and reproduced the problem in their lab, or so they tell me. They think it only affects computers with the nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 (so, the rev. B-D 12" PowerBook G4), running Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later, but they may be mistaken (I have found some information indicating that this affects other GPUs under 10.4.3/4 as well). All versions of the game are affected: standard, standard w/ expansion pack, and complete (release in October 2005, and still for sale on the shelves of Apple Stores as elsewhere).
Aspyr has told me that because they have not received enough complaints about this admitted bug, they have prioritized it as 'low' and will not 'move it up the priority list' (and publish a patch) unless they hear from more disgruntled users.
So, if you're out there, please write to Aspyr, using the form at support.aspyr.com. I'm not asking anyone to lie; hopefully, posting this will lead to some legitimate responses, light a fire under Aspyr, and get this fixed. This is not an altogether unwarranted hope, they have encouraged my suggestion to do this.
By the way, soon after 10.4.3 came out, Aspyr issued Patch C for The Sims 2 which "Fixes a conflict with NVIDIA video cards and OS X 10.4.3." So, I think they know how to fix this, they just need to get someone on it.
Thanks in advance for your help!

hi thanks for the help.. i did the metapackage install and also reinstaleld quodlibet, and now it gives an error on the commandline which might help,
