Similar to Pixel Motion ?

Hello,
I really like the Frame Blending/ Pixel Motion effect,  unfortunately this can only be achieve if the initial comp/layer is a video, or image sequence.
I have a series of  still images on separate layers in various Comps, these are nested within my Final Comp (still retaining their transparency)..  Is there a way i can achieve a similar effect to apply on my final animated Comp layer? Either through an AE work around or a Plugin?
I've tried the Force Motion FX but its too subtle to be noticed.
Thanks for any ideas.
Jeff

Thanks, Adolfo
Yeah, I discovered that setting the Speed to 50,  then pre comp this into another with a time stretch of 200% came very close.  However, I’m also trying to utilize Time Remap for lip sync,  I’m concerned that  enabling Time warp will create strange timing behaviors.
I’ll try messing with the "Posterize Time" settings, as per your suggestion, and see what happens.
Thanks again
Jeff

The Pixel Motion Blur effect was new in After Effects CC (12.0).

  • Pixel Motion with time remap. Am I missing something?

I have a 720p 59.94 fps clip of an rc quad flying. Ive time remapped it and applied Pixel Motion but the little quad chops very badly while the background is very smooth during the slowest part of the time remap.
As a control measure, I did the same clip with only frame blending, no Pixel Motion, and the quad is smooth, however the whole scene isnt as clean as would be with Pixel Motion.
    Am I missing something?
Heres the two clips; the 1st one is frame blending, the second is frame blending/Pixel Motion. Why does the subject(quad) skip badly?

It's inherent in how the two two methods work differently - one favors large, contiguous areas, the other works better with only tiny motion differences. The problem is that when using pixel motion to the algorithm your copter doesn't move much. No motion, nothing to blend. You can always try the Timewarp effect and tweak its parameters, but short of masking the copter and combining the two you won't get a perfect result, either, most likely.

  • Pixel motion detection?

Is it possible to have a layer effected by another layers' pixel motion?
Another words, when working with video/image footage....
If there is any change in pixel of layer A  - this turns on the opacity of  layer B.
If there is no change in pixel of layer A,  the opacity of Layer B is off.
    Is something like this possible?
    Thanks for any insight..

If there is any change in pixel of layer A  - this turns on the opacity of  layer B.
If there is no change in pixel of layer A,  the opacity of Layer B is off.<
Difference Key compares changes in two versions of the smae shot and the output can be accessed many different ways.
Conventional displacement or compound effects can be driven by comparator operations.
But your description doesn't do me any good. A "change in a pixel" must be defined precisely. I'm not sure vectors of movement are required. One only needs to look at the previous frame. If a pixel has moved, how would you know? If the pixels are binary, black or white, that's easy. If they're full-rez 4:4:4 chroma sampling, that's a bit more difficult.
How about you tell us what you're tyring to accomplish? There's going to be better ways to perform the task, probably.

  • Slow motion plug in?

Is there a plug in for final or motion for slow-motion that is better than frame-blending, motion-blur and optical flow?

How much money have you got?
ReVision Twixtor comes to mind, US$600.
    http://www.revisionfx.com/products/twixtor/
Easier to reshoot or shoot properly with enough frames per second to make the task more palatable. Optical flow is similar to pixel vector path estimation technology used in Twixtor.

  • Nesting COMPS in Motion?

I've used After Effects previously and am trying to find a comparable method of nesting comps in Motion. I have two lines on test shifting their positions in a layer - and then I want to zoom them forward as one. So I see that I can keyframe the scale of the entire layer - if I set Blending Mode to "Combine" the text maintains its clear edge when scaled over 100%, but once I add Basic 3D distortion, the edge becomes pixeled. I know in AE there is a button to remedy this - is there a similar function in Motion - or am I going about this process all wrong?

What you're doing may be causing that layer to be rasterized, thus the sizing issue when you blow it up. Any chance of you posting the project for inspection?

  • Slow Motion - AE or PPro ?

Might be a stupid question. If you were going to slow a clip down to 30% of the original speed, who does the better job of it ? AE or PPro ?

    After Effects. Definitely. No doubt.
The frame blending feature in After Effects has a much higher quality option than the equivalent feature in Premiere Pro: Pixel Motion.
The Timewarp effect in After Effects uses the same technology but gives more control.
Twixtor is very similar to Timewarp.

  • Illustrator document comes in pixelated, before even placing in a comp

I'm stumped on this one, folks:
I created this graphic in illustrator, made up of a pattern of wavy lines. Looks clean and normal in Illustrator, zoomed in at 400%:
However, when imported into After Effects, pulling it up in the footage panel, it looks pixelated at 100% magnification:
    (Closer view):
I've tried a number of possible solutions I've seen suggested here and on Creative Cow:
Made sure that the "document raster effects setting" in illustrator is turned way up (currently at 800 ppi)
Turned on anti-alias under "document raster effects setting" in illustrator (makes no difference whether this is on or off)
Made sure that pixel aspect correction isn't enabled in AE
Played with "interpret footage" settings in AE
Tried changing save options in illustrator -- create PDF compatible file/Use compression... neither make a difference
I'm all out of ideas. Is it possible that the illustrator file is TOO COMPLEX for AE to rasterize correctly? It is a very large document, necessary to make it work within my AE comp. (Here it is at 25% zoom in AE for reference):
Any ideas? Note that this is before I even put it into a comp, so "rasterize continuously" is not the source of the problem. Any help would be appreciated!

I can tell from your original post that there is a basic misunderstanding of how vectors are rasterized and interpreted in any video application including Motion, Final Cut, Premiere Pro, Avid... and After Effects.
"I've tried a number of possible solutions I've seen suggested here and on Creative Cow:

Tried changing save options in illustrator -- create PDF compatible file/Use compression... neither make a difference
I'm all out of ideas. Is it possible that the illustrator file is TOO COMPLEX for AE to handle correctly? "
Let's start with point 1... Document Raster settings in Illustrator set to 800PPI...
Well, there are no inches in video so the PPI will only effect raster effects and raster effects will not continuously rasterize because they are interpreted as pixels. For video work 72 is plenty, 800 will not gain you anything unless you have completely setup your Illustrator project incorrectly for video.
Document Raster effects settings in Illustrator make no difference as I do not see any raster effects in your sample. Raster effects are things like Drop Shadow. It looks like you just have a bunch of wavy lines. If you have a rastor effect applied you do not have a vector image any more.
Too complex is also a misunderstanding of how AE handles vector images. Your paths, though numerous, are simple... no chance the number of paths is causing the problem. So what is?
The lines are too thin... Simple as that. You must be concerned with the stroke width in your illustrator files. It looks like the stroke is set to 1 point. That means 1 pixel. One pixel lines MUST be exactly lined up with the pixel grid to rasterize properly. There's no way around that limitation. NONE. Change your document settings in Illustrator to pixels instead of points and you'll see what I mean. Your lines don't look ailiased or blocky to me, they look like 1 piel width lines not following the pixel grid perfectly. The behavior is completely normal.
Here's how you should set up an Illustrator file for video work.
In illustrator, document setup should be in pixels not points, or inches or anything else.
Artboard size should be set to be big enough to include every element you wish to include in an AE comp. IOW, if you want to push in in AE to 1/4 of your illustration then the artboard should be 4X the size of the comp.
Strokes must be at least 2 pixels wide. This will guarantee that when your illustration is viewed at 100% scale AE will have a chance of antialiasing any curved lines. 1 pixel wide curved or diagonal lines cannot be rastorized into a smooth line.
If you plan to scale down your image then you must compensate in your design so that the lines will scale down without problems. This thicker strokes. Scale to 50% and your stroke needs to be 4 pixels or 4 points to work well.
You should have snap to pixels on, do pixel previews in Illustrator, and accurately position your vector lines precisely in Illustrator to minimize problems.
Inside AE you should select your AI layers in the project panel and then go to Interpret Footage, More Options, and set antaliasing to more accurate.
    I hope this helps you.
The wavy line pattern is going to cause all kinds of moray and interference problems when you move it across the screen because of the changes in aliasing as the lines move across the pixel grid and are interpreted as pixels. This is also a guaranteed problem with the design. It can be mitigated by fattening up the stroke and by using an expression to make sure all movement is exactly on an even pixel.
You still have to worry about retinal retention, stroboscopic effects due to frame rate and pixel motion, and moray patterns caused by the human eye and brain combination. Read this article from this forum's FAQ for more information on that. Our brains don't like to look at moving repetitive patterns. Try slowly moving your eyes across the red checkered table cloth the next time you eat in an Italian restaurant and you'll see what I mean.

  • Reflection White effect in Motion 2?

Very new to Motion 2, I still have a greatt deal to learn. But I was wonder if there's a way to create the refection effects seen in iMovie HD, version iLife 6? I really like that effecta nd would like to be able to create similar effects in Motion. Can this be done? If so, can someone give be a step-by-step or point me in the general direction? Thank you!

Thank you Patrick, but specifically, I'm trying to figure out how I can create the 3D motion as created by the iMovie 6 "Reflection White (or black) theme. I can see, somewhat, how to create a reflection and have that reflection be 3D and move, What I can't figure out is how to create the perspective of the image, or movie, changing with the movement—e.g., appearing as if to slide along a path and shrink or grow as it moves along the X, Y and Z planes. As with the "Reflection" themes, pictures and movies and move and swing in 3D space. I'm trying to simulate that type of motion.
    Thank you so much.

  • Using Timewarp on motion tweened effects...

I'm using Timewarp to adjust the speed of a layer that contains motion tweened effects (ie. particles). For some reason Timewarp is treating the layer as regular 29.97 fps footage and using it's vector blending to interpolate the footage (creating undesirable distortions).
In the end, I plan on Timewarping a single pre-comped layer that contains many different effect layers (Particular, Optical Flares, Element, etc.)
Is there a way to get Timewarp to just re-calculate and re-tween the motion instead of doing it's usual vector blending thing?
    -Pete

Hey, thanks for the great suggestion. I never really used Time Remapping before so I tested it and it works great! It actually re-calculates tweened motion and does a decent job on regular footage that has pixel motion frame blending enabled.
I guess since Timewarp is just a filter, it's limited.
    Thanks agan.

  • Motion Path missing!

For some reason, I cannot find a way to make simple moving text animation by moving the text in canvas.
Few days ago, when I created a first project in Live Type, I just placed the keyframes to timeline and setted the text´s starting and ending points in canvas.
Today, when I tried to study the application more, it did not work as it did last time, the motion paths did not appear, when dragging the text from place to another, and when playing the sequence, the animation did not happend...?
I could not find the way how to solve that.
    Something wrong in preferences?

To answer myself, and for them who might struggle with similar difficulties:
The motion path appears when clicking and dragging the bounding box around individual letter, not by dragging the whole track or it´s ending points.
