Simple Answer - Will upgrading to Lion Break my Bootcamp Install?

I'm running Snow Leopard. I have an IMac with a 1TB Drive - I have 800Gig for Mac and 200 Gig Partioned for Windows through Bootcamp(Win 7)
I want to download and upgrade my Mac OS to Lion. I've read through a ton of posts on issues to do with reinstalls etc; but I jut need to know if I upgrade to Lion, will I also have to redo my Bootcamp as well?
I plan to back up everything anyway, but I'd prefer not to have to reinstall all the Windows programs I use etc;
I'm not a tech geek so I'm just trying to figure out how complicated this install would be. If I didn't have bootcamp, I'd just do it, but getting Bootcamp installed and running the first time was a chore and I don't want to have to do it again, especially now that I have a Windows partition full of programs and data.
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks for this. Makes perfect sense and this is the type of answer I was looking for. I could simply move a bunch of data off the MAc Paritition to make sure that there is enough HD Space. Looking at it now I have 188Gigs Free so I should be ok.
The other question would be, I have Bootcamp 3.02 now I think. I would have to upgrade this to 4.0 with Lion as I understand it? This would have to be done after the Lion upgrade?
Thanks so much for the help.
Tom

Negative reviews are common place here as it is a trouble shooting forum. If you want to read the advantages, improvements and new features then go to the Apple site. If you are running Word 2004, Early Adobe suite, etc which are PPC programs, then don't update. Go to Apple logo in upper left menu bar, open About this mac > More Info > Software >Applications and sort by 'Kind' and look what PPC programs you have installed. If you are not prepared to upgrade these programs, then do not update to Lion.
There are plenty of threads to read up on about this here. But remember that 99.9% of comments will be negative, even though the forums represent only a tiny fraction of the Millions of Lion Downloads purchased and installed with no issues at all. So basically it's your call.
    Good Luck

  • Re: Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.5, will upgrading to Lion, OS X 10.7, help with this issue?

I cannot upgrade my Mac to Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8 and cannot buy a new Mac so will upgrading from
OS X 10.5 to OS X 10.7 help with this issue?

If you are going tob e upgrading to 10.7 you should be able to just upgrade, and then install future updates of Firefox with no problem.

  • Will upgrading to lion erase photos

If I upgrade to lion via the app store, will it wipe out my photos and documents?

It should not if everything works perfectly.
I don't know about you but I am comfortable trusting my data to everything working perfectly so I back it up at least twice.
According to your profile you are still at Leopard, you must upgrade to Snow Leopard before you can upgrade to Lion.

  • Will upgrading to lion cause me to lose any installed software (iLife, etc)

I have a Mac mini that I don't know that much about. It has Snow Leopard, but I need to upgrade to Lion to get the new SDK. Coming from the Windows world, you can lose everything that's currently installed when you upgrade operating systems. I don't have install disks for the software that came on my system out of the box. None of the upgrade tutorials that I've seen address this. Any advice?
    Thanks!

Make a Time Machine backup and download a free/donationware copy of CarbonCopyCloner and also make a bootable clone of your system. This is just in case something does go wrong during the upgrade. Then you should just be able to install Lion over Snow Leopard and all your programs and settings should still be there. Just remember that any PPC programs will no longer be supported.

  • Will upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion delete my Windows partition (bootcamp)?

On my other computer I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, and the windows vista partition was completely deleted.  I was wondering if I upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion on my other mac with Windows 7 will it be affected, or in other words, is Mountain Lion Bootcamp compatable with WIndows 7. Should I save it to an external hard drive?
    Thanks!

No OS X installer deletes a Windows partition automatically. There is no reason for a Mountain Lion installer to do so when upgrading from Lion.
Nevertheless, having backups is always a good idea no matter what. If you don't have them, then this is a good time for them.

  • Will upgrading to lion/mountain lion erase bootcamp partition?

I am thinkng about upgrading to Lion/mountan lion, but was wondering if it will delete my bootcamp windows partition.  I have to use windows for some work taht I do, and would rather not have to spend the few hours to repartition and upgrade my copy of XP

If you're already running Windows 7, upgrading it to Win 7 Pro allows you to install XP Mode which is XP Pro running inside of Win 7 Pro. Depending on your Mac, XP Mode can run surprisingly fast. I'm doing that in Fusion. I don't know if Win 7 Pro in Boot Camp will equally support XP Mode, but since Microsoft takes care of the support for XP Mode, I doubt it would be a problem.

Login to App Store with the ID that bought Lion, using any other machine you own.

  • Will upgrading to Lion fix an invalid node error?

Hi. We have an imac running OS10.4.11. It is still running, but freezes occasionally. I finally ran disk utility and found out we have invalid nodes. I have tried running fsck, rebooting from the original disks, doing an archive and reinstall, and running disk utility from the original disk. All fail due to errors. I do not own disk warrior. What I'm wondering is: do I buy DW to try to repair the original or would buying a new HD and purchasing Lion and installing that fix things up? I want the most parsimonious solution here. After all DW might not be able to solve the problem, the OS is pretty old now, I do not want to buy a new imac at this time, and the rest of the imac seems just fine and dandy. Thoughts?

    Another vote for DW.
You must repair the HD, your best bet is likely DiskWarrior.
BTW, you might enjoy these DiskWarrior review/recommendations...

  • It is my first time updating an operating system on my mac.will lion delete my files off my hard drive when I upgrade to lion?

I reccently bought my imac around christmas of 2009, and this is the first time I have ever upgraded the operating system on my mac. will upgrading to lion completely wipe out all the files and data on my hard drive?

No, it won't. But you should make a backup of your files, document your settings and check application compatibility.

  • After  i have upgraded to Lion OS, this computer has become the worst computer on this planet. Everything is so slow as if i am in 1990's, where you can click on something and take a coffee break. Constantly get errors on MS Outlook and all applications

After  i have upgraded to Lion OS, this computer has become the **** computer on this planet. Everything is so slow as if i am in 1990 where you can click on something and take a coffee break. Constantly get errors on MS Outlook and all applications are taking for ever to open up. If you guys can't fix it i am going to throw this out the window. Completely fed up with this. Have always loved apple but this is the worst experience i have with the MacBook Air and its not even 1.5yr old.

There are two ways to upgrade to Lion - one is to install Lion overtop of the existing Snow Leopard and the other is to erase the hard drive, install Lion, and then migrate your applications and user accounts. This second option takes a good deal longer than the first so the preferred method for most is the first method and in most cases it works fine. But not in all.
captfred has told you what I'd start out doing if it were my computer. There's a good chance that you can identify an application or plug-in that's causing the problem. Upgrading the involved item(s) can solve the problem. Of all the Lion upgrades I performed I had a couple that weren't completely successful even though I'd looked for programs and plug-ins that needed upgrading first. I missed a few but I found them after the fact and had happy computers.
There was one computer that still had problems. With this computer I reinstalled Lion right over the old version. (If you didn't keep a copy you'll need to download it first.) I still wasn't satisfied so with that computer I rebooted into the recovery partition (Command R after restarting) formatted the hard drive, installed Lion and then migrated. That did solve the problem.

  • Upgrade to Lion broke iMovie 08 - iSight Camera - No camera connected - To import video, please connect a camera - error message

I recently upgraded to OSX Lion.  My MackBoo Pro is fully patched and updated.  I can launch iMovie 08 but when i try to record or import video from camera it get the error message. No Camera Connected - To import video, please connect a camera.
All my other applications work fine with iSight including iChat, Skype, PhotoBooth.  So why would a specific upgrade to Lion break iMovie 08?
I looked at the other posts on this topic and no one has a really solid explination or fix.
    help please!!

That is odd.  When logged into Discussions, the Profile tab on my personal Apple Support Communities > People page includes the following screen-shot from immediately below the big avatar picture:
Clicking on the "Edit" link opens the dialog window shown in this screen-shot:
The choices bar lets you correct your OS.  Update saves the info.
If yours does not work this way, try a different browser.  (These screen shots are made using Safari on my Mac.)
lonestarry wrote: ...  Looks like I will have to dig out my ... iLife 08 ...  I dont remember ever having an iLife disc, just the OSX disc.
If you want to fix your problem, it is time to reinstall and updated to the most current iMovie '08 version.
If you did not buy iLife '08 separately, perhaps it was included in the Software Applications disk(s) that came with your Mac.
lonestarry wrote: ... a colleague ... has the exact same issue...
Has your colleague reinstalled and updated iLife after upgrading to Lion?
I am using iMovie '11 (version 9.0.4), so I cannot test your specific version.  iMovie 9.0.4 is properly working for me after I restarted it one time.
However, depending on individual system configurations, Lion compatibility may be version dependent.  For example, this forum post contains reports of iLife '08 (and even older) working with Lion.  Moreover, as shown in this screen-shot from the roaringapps listing, it is the newer versions that may have problems:
Your version 7.1.4 should work with no trouble if all your Apple software is up to date.

  • Time Machine and Upgrade to Lion

At our office we have a Mac mini Model A1347. It was running Snow Leopard. We went to do some updates and the computer started to lag really bad. We ended up booting in Safe Mode only to find that Disk Utility said the ServerHD drive was failing.
So we replace both drives and now I am trying to figure out what to do. We can´t find our install disks for Snow Leopard. We were wanting to upgrade to Lion so can I:
    install Lion
download the Server App from the Appstore
    Restore from Time Machine backup
then have everything running ok, or will the upgrade to Lion mess up our Server settings we had before?
    Thanks for your help!

Your network drive isn't compatible with Lion.  See #C16 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
