Simple Backup Setup?

The 2T external hard drive I was using to back up my Mac Mini failed a couple months ago; Click click click... and  it wasn't recognized by the Mini.
So - I've bought two 3T external drives, empty, ready to go.
Surprise! After a few hours in the freezer, my old drive started up like nothing happened.
My goal is to get everything off my unfrozen caveman external drive and onto BOTH of the new ones.
My main concern is a failing drive, not natural  disasters or theft. I work at home.
I want as little as possible stored on the Mini, and everything as automatic as possible.
At this moment my my unfrozen caveman external drive is merrily doing a 34G TimeMachine backup.
When it's finished I'll be ready to act. The best simple back up solution using two 3T external drives...
Anyone?
Thanks

Hi Cora,
Yes, you can bypass DRE on WAAS y modifying policy / creating a new policy.
To modify the policy, you need to find which policy is being used for that connection. This is little tricky and can afect the pother traffic, too.
The safe bet is to create a new policy. I believe you have the server ip addresses. You can create a new classifier using a server ip address, put two reverse conditions in the classifier and apply it to the WAE.
Here is the document help to create a new policy and new classifier. Let me know if you want me to paste the options to create a policy.

    cd...
Yes you hold c and it boots off the installer disk that came with your comptuer or the OS X version you upgraded with.
You can also install OS X onto a external drive provided it's formatted HFS+Journaled in Disk Utility.
    Gordon McGilvray wrote:

Ok, you don't need to boot from the installer disk, all it does is install OS X and perform some disk repairs and reformatting. You go this route if you have to rebuild OS X completely, or reinstall it over the previous OS X to solve issues. Are you having a issue of some sort?
We could use some more information why,
What you seem to want to do is CLONE your boot drive to a Disk Utility > HFS+ journaled formatted (self powered) external drive.
You can do this with the  free (donations accepted) Carbon Copy Cloner, which clones and makes the external drive "bootable"
When your done cloning, the external clone is hold option bootable which you select the external clone to boot from.
CCC only does OS X, no bootcamp or filevaulted drives.
Once you have a clone, it can be updated much faster for small changes, the first clone takes longer as everything is copied.
Only use one drive for a clone, it's a good idea to have two drives with two clones rotated every couple of weeks, updated daily with the auto-updte feature.
This way if somethng goes bad, at least you can go back a week or two and recover by option booting off the older clone.
More hardware redundancy also protects your data from hardware failure. Store a clone off site for any potential fire, theft etc.

  • Wanted: Just A Simple Backup That Regularly Saves Latest Files

    Greetings:
Subject line says it all. I'm just looking for a simple backup program that will hourly backup to my external hard drive and flash drive just the latest documents I'm working on in my User folder without having a whole duplicate of that folder on those disks. Maybe the idea's so basic it's overlooked but all my searching can't find any backup software along these lines. I've been told on MacWorld forum it might be possible to use Spotlight and Automation to search and save the latest files but they can't offer any clue how. I'd really be appreciative for any ideas!
    Thanks

  • Packup - a simple backup/restore/migration script for Pacman

I have seen numerous posts on the forums asking for an easy way to backup and restore installed software for purposes of backup, migration or simply for convenience. Packup attempts to fill this void. Simply put, Packup is an ncurses wrapper for Pacman which provides a simple backup/restore/migration system for Arch. Don't believe me? Try it for yourself!

  • Simple backup - sync two folders

I want to create a very simple backup process for a folder (with subfolders) to an identically named folder on an external drive.
Right now I am just copying the folder with automator - but it takes several minutes as it writes each and every files regardless of whether it is new or not..
Can I get it to sync the folders so that it only copies over new (or modified) files?
I did find an action to do this in the apple downloads but it required Leopard.

  • What is the cleanest Lightroom Dropbox backup setup?

I have a 1TB Dropbox account and want to use it to backup my photos. As Lightroom 5 simply references the image files, I've got them saved inside a 'Pictures' folder, by date taken, inside my Dropbox folder, so all images are (slowly) being uploaded to the cloud. I also have my Lightroom catalogue and previews files saved in the same location. And I have Lightroom set to automatically import photos taken on my iPhone from the Dropbox 'Camera Uploads' folder, and save them into my library. I thought I had all my bases covered.
The problem is, even with a cable internet connection, it is taking forever for everything to upload. And I'm not completely sure, but it seems to be prioritising uploading the Lightroom previews ahead of the actual image files in the library. And the fact that it's uploading both the original photos and the previews makes me wonder if I should have the Lightroom files saved outside of my Dropbox folder.
Can anyone suggest a Lightroom > Dropbox backup setup that works for them? I really want to set it up so that it just backs up automagically and I don't have to do anything manually except import photos.

Yes, there are lots of threads here by folks having trouble with them.  But there are very few of us who have much, if any, experience with them.  And, of course, each maker has different software and procedures.
And, since most of our experience is helping with problems, we're not exactly wild about the idea.
Most of the ones I've been involved in start out with something like "I've contacted <NAS maker> and Apple several times, and nobody can help."
If you're not technically proficient, think long and hard.  If you are, well, do the same.  If you decide to do it anyway, be sure to have secondary backups.
For a taste, skim this 6-day saga (not clear how much earlier it started): I can't find my old backups.
The lady was a novice (at the beginning -- not any more ), so it's much longer than usual, but that's far from the only one here.

    Hi,
This is pulling my hair out! Must be overlooking something very simple!
Simple lab setup with 3 routers. VPN setup between R1 & R3 with static routing. R2 connects R1 & R3. All interfaces are reachable, including loopbacks. I am trying to encrypt traffic between loopback on R1 (69.69.69.69) to loopback on R3 (192.168.100.223).
With no Crypto Map applied to outgoing interfaces on R1 and R3 ping is successful (sourced via local loopback) between the loopbacks. As soon as I add the Crypto Map the same ping fails and and I get the following debug messages.

  • Simple Backup Possible?

    Hi All,
New Premiere Pro guy here, so I'm reaching out with what might be a dumb question, but hopefully you can help.
I use Premiere Pro CS6 (on Win 7 PC) and am looking for a very simple way to make sure I'm backed up with my film projects.  Right now, all my original footage (video and audio files) is on an 2TB external hard drive.  So my question is this: I have an extra and separate 3 TB hard drive I want to use for backups.  Can I just store a copy of the the original footage files along with a copy of the .PRPROJ file onto this extra 3 TB hard drive and call it a day?  Or are there files I need in addition to the footage, and in addition to the .PRPROJ file, in order be fully backed up with my film projects?
    Thanks, Matt

You can simply copy the contents of the 2tb drive to the 3tb drive and you will be fine. The only issue you will have is when you open the backup copy of the project you will have to relink the footage. As long as you haven't changed the file structure of your footage backup, you only have to find one clip and it will automatically find all other assets.
There is also a way to condense the projects and copy for backup, using the project manager. The only thing Adobe seems to have forgotten is AE comps from Dynamic link, you'd have to manually back those up for each project if you do it this way.
Here's a little video tutorial on it http://layersmagazine.com/using-the-project-manager-in-premiere-pro.html

  • Simple speaker setup for ATV?

I understand if I get bumped because this post isn't ATV-related... But I argue that other ATV users might find this thread helpful. So...
I purchased a new HD TV, one that I will use solely with Apple TV. I want better audio than the built-in speakers. Since I'm not going to need AM/FM radio, CD player, etc., I don't need or want a traditional AV receiver.
I want a 2-speaker speaker setup that can accept an optical audio connection (from the Apple TV)... and that's it. I've seen computer-type speakers that accept a 2.5mm audio cable, from the headphone-out of the computer. The audio signal runs to one speaker, which is the "parent" speaker -- it accepts the audio from the computer, the power input to the speaker system, and then an audio cable that runs audio to the other speaker. I want the same setup... except that it sends an optical audio signal.
Does anyone know of a speaker system that will do this? I don't need all of the bells and whistles of a traditional receiver/speaker setup. Many other Apple TV users out there might have the same, simple needs.

I want a 2-speaker speaker setup that can accept an optical audio connection (from the Apple TV)...
This may be much more than you want, but is I believe what currently replaces my Logitec Z680 which I am still using on my old PPC G5. It is a 505 watt RMS optical input amplified speaker system with 5.1 DD/DTS/Pro Logic II decoder built into the control head. Believe the street price is in the $325-$350 range if interested.

  • Simple backup of TC data to an external HD

    Hello --
I'm trying to do a straight backup of my 2TB Time Capsule (with three Macs' worth of Time Machine data) to my external 2TB hard drive.  I've done this once before but I sure can't figure out how I did it.  I only use my HD as an offsite TC backup, not as a regular appendage to my TM setup.
    Thanks much for your help!
    -s

The Archive function in AirPort Utility will make a complete copy of the contents of the Time Capsule drive to an attached USB hard drive.....so that might be what you were thinking of.
Otherwise, you can use a third party commerical application like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the contents of the Time Capsule drive to a USB drive attached to the Time Capsule.

  • Simple VISA Setup Problem

    Hi all,
I'm having issues working with VISA in LabVIEW. Previously, I've used Peek/Poke VIs (before they were VISA VIs) that allowed me to read and write directly to registers at a given Windows address. I have a new, custom PCI Express board that uses the same architecture that I've worked with previously only this time I'm trying to access the registers using VISA.
As this is my first time using VISA, I'm having some setup problems. Yesterday I got to a state where logically things should work but I still end up getting an error when I try to run a simple VISA Open command (see attached screenshot).
The initial problem I had was I was not able to acquire a VISA resource that opens a session to my PCIe board...it would simply not show up on the resource list. After reading around I discovered I needed to create a custom VISA driver for my board. Once I did that using the VISA Driver Wizard, the device showed up in my list (as seen in the screenshot). I wrote the simplest of all VIs where I simply open that VISA resource, however, the error seen in the screenshot is produced.
I'm pretty sure this is a simple setup issue, but does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

    Hi bonhomme,
I see you're having some issues using VISA. It sounds like you're new to VISA, so I wanted to pass along some information that we have availble on this software. This link gives good general information about VISA, and the related links are extremely helpful in finding specific issues.
Thank you for attaching your error. This is extremely helpful in debugging since we can actually see the numbers. There is another forumn that talks about these at this link and at this link.

  • HT4859 Simple backup to iCloud

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I simply want iCloud to backup a single directory on my Mac, and that's it. I don't want automated backups of my entire machine ... just a single directory, simple. Can anyone tell me how that is to be done?

Photos ... only photos ... and lots of them. I've got a single directory on my Mac that contains these images and that's all I'd like to store in the cloud. I guess I mistakenly thought iCloud could do this.
I want a simple drag and drop, virtual disk, that I can store this data to. I don't really even want any automation. Simply sign in and drag from my Mac to the cloud as a backup. Simple.
What about Carbonite as a carrier? Have you heard of them?
So .. what you're telling me is that iCloud isn't good for much more than getting all of your Apple gear synchronized?
Thanks for your willingness to help me out here.

  • How do i do a simple backup and restore in SSIS?

I've been searching google and to my avail i've found nothing.  How do i do a simple Database Backup to Database A, and from the Backup File, restore it (incremental backups) to Database B using BIDS?  I just wanted to design a control flow to deal with thisSIRIUS

    Hi,
To backup a database using SSIS, drag and drop a Execute SQL task onto your SSIS package designer. Double click on it and set the connection type to OLEDB. Set the Connection property to the Master datatabase, or any database for that matter, on your SQL server. The wizard is pretty simple and you should be able to follow it pretty easily.
Once done, click on the SQL Statement property of the package, and click the small ellipsis button. A new pop-up window opens. Copy and paste below script in the window, save the changes and you are done!!
    Script to backup database:
    -- Backup database to file
    declare @backupFileName varchar(100), @backupDirectory varchar(100),
    @databaseDataFilename varchar(100), @databaseLogFilename varchar(100),
    @databaseDataFile varchar(100), @databaseLogFile varchar(100),
    @databaseName varchar(100), @execSql varchar(1000)
-- Set the name of the database you want to backup
    set @databaseName = 'myDatabase'
-- Set the path for a directory on SQL server machine where backup files will be stored after backup process
-- This can be a path of a shared folder on another machine as well, provided Write permissions are granted
    -- on this folder.
    set @backupDirectory = 'aboslute_path_to_backup_directory' -- such as 'c:\temp\'
-- Create the backup file name based on the backup directory, the database name and today's date
