Simple commentary track setting

I have a project that has a standard track and a commentary track. The user can set the audio track to 1 (std) or 2 (comm) depending on the menu selection and that works fine, but that selection reverts back to 1 every time the menu gets selected for a scene change. How can I make the user selected audio track persist until that selection has been changed? Is this a coding of some sort or am I missing some simple solution.

The best way to do it is to script it - it isn't too tricky to do, but if you've never scripted then it could seem daunting.
All you need to do is set a menu where the user chooses which audio they want. This sets a 'flag' which you then rely on from then on. When you go back to the menu and choose the next clip, go to a script which checks to see the flag setting and then on to the clip to play the appropriate audio.
Alternatively, you could simply place two buttons under an image of the clip and set each button to play different audio using the property inspector. That way you only use one menu, no scripts and let the user choose what they want each time.

  • How to make a commentary track in iDVD and iMovie 6

Could someone please explain how to make a commentary track using iMovie6 and iDVD? I think I will be able to import the commentary track onto the second sound track in iMovie 6 with no problem. I just can't figure out how to make it an optional track in the final DVD.

Yes, you can put the commentary track on the second sound track in 06. You can also attach a mic and make the commentary as a recording. I will caution that you will need to depress any original sounds associated with the film so that it does not sound like a garbled mess with both tracks competing. I imagine you know how to grab the volume level line in the audio track and nudge it lower or higher?
I also don't see any other option than including two versions of the film on the DVD. Pretty simple fix if it will fit... I would export the plain film first before adding the other audio (or you can simply uncheck one of the audio tracks while exporting to mute it).

  • Toggle for commentary track

I have a special features menu on my dvd, with on and off buttons for the commentary track. Right now, when you select one of them, the video track begins playing, from the beginning, with the correct audio stream selected. So it works.
But on most normal dvds, when you select an option for commentary in the features menu, it sends you back to the main menu, where you can then choose to play. Most of the time, choosing 'play' will even resume playback to the spot you left off.
So how do I set up DVDSP to behave this way? Thanks so much.

It's just a question of setting the parameters for playback, but not actually starting the playback. The following tutorial at Kenstone should help:

  • Where is the Safari 5.0.5 "Do Not Track" setting?

The WSJ -- as well as most of the Apple Interest sites -- have promised that there would be a "Do Not Track" setting in the new version of Safari -- namely, and specifically, 5.0.5.  For what it's worth, I can't find it.  It's not in the "Preferences" settings; there's no privacy tab there at all, actually; it's also not referenced in the Help menu system; and finally, there's no sign of it in the Apple Site.  In fact, the only references are all from these 3rd Party groups, starting with the Wall Street Journal.
I'm guessing it may be there somewhere -- the new Firefox actually does have the setting, but it's very difficult to find.  Sort of a grudging attitude, I'd say.  "You can have it if you can find it, but we're sure not going to help you find it."
Google Chrome, of course, doesn't have it at all: how could they? They make all their money off selling all the information/using all the information they can, in their advertising business model.
So.....I'm guessing that Safari -- in spite of the promises -- doesn't have the "Do Not Track" option, at least not yet.  If you can find it, please let me know.
    Thanks.

Oh, if your really want to block things you can add a block list to your Hosts file.
1: Download the free Text Wrangler
2: Copy the entire text of this web page:
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt
    3: Paste into Text Edit
    4: Remove line: (important!!)
    127.0.0.1  localhost
5: Use Find and Replace change all instances of
    127.0.0.1 to 0.0.0.0
6: Save the file onto your desktop for now, any name will do. Leave file open in Text Edit.
7: Launch Text Wrangler and File Open By Name:  /etc/hosts
8: Touch nothing you see there (very important)
9: Text Edit and Select all/copy
10: Text Wrangler, mouse to the bottom of the file (add some returns) and click paste.
11: Save the Text Wrangler /etc/hosts file, it will ask for your Admin password.
That's it. you just added a computer level block to all the current malicious sites on the Internet, along with ads, trackers and other nasty business.
All you have to do is update that portion of the /etc/hosts file every few months using the same methods above without deleting the original /etc/hosts file contents.
You shoudl save a copy of the original /etc/hosts file just in case you delete it by accident.
If you want to block any site on the Internet, just add a line and (example, like so)  0.0.0.0 www.facebook.com
If you want to unblock a site just put a # symbol in front of any line for the comptuer to "ignore this line"
What this does is resolves the domain name for certain malicious/ad sites before it asks your Domain Name Server for the correct IP of these sites.
Because you use 0.0.0.0 it's "nothing" and the site fails to load.
Note: All responsiblity is yours if you screw things up or have any problem using this method to block sites.

  • Simple Javascript to set date

    Hello,
My simple JavaScript to set the date runs in Acrobat Pro but when I open the same document in reader it set the date but it fails with a dialog pop out of getField error... here is the script followed by the error...
    function populate_date()
    var f = this.getField("ToDay_Date");
    if (!f.value) f.value = util.printd ("m/d/yyyy", new Date());
    populate_date(); // call my function
Above scripts run when document is opened... In Pro it is stored under Tools/JavaScripts/Document JavaScript...
When I open it in Reader then I get the following while it set the date on the date filed too!
Acrobat EScript Built-in Functions Version 11.0
    Acrobat SOAP 11.0
TypeError: this.getField is not a function
    2:Folder-Level:App:Search Script.js
What am I not setting right that I get this error...
    Regards,
    Jeff P.

    Hi,
No it did not do and did not help still same error came out... Let me ask you this... this is a combination of 6 pages of 5-6 forms that this field of "ToDay_Date" is repeated at least 4 times on 4 pages of this combined form and it really populates all the repeated "Today_Date" on all pages in PDF Pro and  Reader but while it does not pop up the error dialog on PDF Pro and runs with no problem but in Reader it pup up the error dialog even after populating all the repeated fields!  Could it be because field has been repeated?  How come it runs and populates all the fields but also gives the error?  I think it is a bug in Reader... don't you think so?

  • Help with DVD Studio Pro Audio Track/Commentary Track

    Hi Everyone -
I am authoring my first DVD for a film.  I believe I have everything under control - menus, chapter selections, bonus features - except for the director's commentary.
I have created 2 main menus - one with a button to turn commentary on, another menu with a button to turn commentary off.
    They work fine.
But when I simulate the DVD, select commentary ON, play movie (commentary track plays) ... Then click the MENU button, it returns to the main menu with the button to turn commentary ON, but the commentary audio track (audio track 2) is still activated at this point.
Is it possible to tell it to return to audio track 1 if the menu button is pressed, or tell it to go to "main menu 2" if the menu button is pressed?
I hope my question is clear.
    Thank you.
    Joe G.

Each track and story has its own end jump and its own Remote Control selection. If I understand your problem correctly, changing the Remote Control>Menu (in the Inspector window) from Same as Disk to the appropriate Menu should fix the problem.
If not, a more complete explanation would help.

  • Recording commentary track for video clip

I have recorded and edited some video clips and now i want to record an audio commentary to layer onto the audio of the video clip, like how directors do the alternate commentary track for a lot of dvds. It would be a recording of 2-6 people sitting viewing the video together with it's original audio.
    Ideally,
1)I would mic each person and feed the mic into the computer to record them each as seperate tracks. I think stp can't do that, but garageband might?
2)I don't want the mics picking up the original audio of the scene they are watching, but I want the people giving the commentary to hear the original audio, as well as what they are saying and what the other people that are sitting in and recording are saying. So the only way I can see that working is to somehow have the original audio of the scene piped into headphones, along with the audio of all the other tracks being recorded.
So how is this all possible, either through my method or another method you could think of. And what equipment would i need, like a mixer or audio interface. If I can't do this natively in stp, than what can I use, like garageband, that i can import into stp for final mixing.

    1) STP 1 can't do multi-track recording but STP 2 will be able to do it. In the meantime, yes, you can use GarageBand.
    2) You're right, you'll need headphones.
If you want dedicated audio tracks for each one, you'll need an audio interface with multiple preamps like MOTU 8pre. You could also use only a stereo mic to record the whole room. That way, you could use an interface with only two mic pres and you'll need less mics too. And since it would be only one track, you'll be able to use STP. For this kind of recording, you'll want to use condenser mics.

  • Commentary Track

I am trying to put a commentary track on my DVD. I put the track on A2, programed a button on the menu to play the video with audio 2 and everything works great in simulation mode. When I try to encode though it always stops 45% into the muxing process. It says the video bit rate is too high I've tried to fix the problem but nothing seems to be working. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Jeff

The maximum rate that a DVD should output is 10.08 Mbps (Page 43 DVD SP 4.1.2 Pdf Manual) Of the 10.08, the maximum rate for the video stream is 9.8 Mbps. Video, audio and subtitle streams count to the max Mbps of 10.08 (Page 44 Pdf )

Between the video and audio tracks you are probably going over. First thing to do is make audio AC3 if you have not done so (also encode m2vs outside of DVD SP

  • Adding Commentary Tracks

    Hello,
I am prepping my new feature film for DVD. My crew recorded a commentary track for the film, as well as a commentary for our deleted scenes etc.
What format should the commentaries being converted into--AIFF?
And how do I properly bring them into the project, so that when one plays the DVD, they have the choice of playing the film or deleted scenes with or without commentary?
    Thanks!

    AIFF 48khz/16 bit works best.
How to create multiple streams in a DVD is best asked in the DVDSP forum.
    Good luck.

  • Decryptor-Commentary Track

just a comment (and maybe get some insight) I have decyrpted to movies and gone through the whole conversion process (total about 3-4 hours each!) and end up with the "commentary track" instead of the regular 2 channel stereo, wish there was a way to preview the VOB file before conversion (since that is the most time consuming)

The VOB file normally contains English, another language, and commentary..
I would try to get a program to split these up then covert it

  • Optional Commentary Track?

I'm making a DVD of a 90 minute play. I'd like to record a commentary track that the DVD end user could turn on or off as they wish when they watch the play. Is that possible through iDVD? If not, does anyone have an idea of how to go about getting that done? Thanks!

........that the DVD end user could turn on or off......
I'm not even sure I could do that with DVDSP (part of FCS 2). It might be possible with apple's pro apps but I'm not 100% certain. I'll have to do some searching and post back later.
I do know DVDSP allows for subtitles on a video track but I'm not sure if this will help your cause either.
A possibility (without having to use Dvdsp) might be to make two identical movies with the exception of adding a commentary track on the second /duplicate movie. That way the end user could select which movie s/he wishes to view directly from the menu which you could identify as such. You'd have to add each movie separately to the existing iDvd project as an independent QT movie for each version of the presentation.
But given the 90 min. length, you'd be forced into using dual layer. That or make a disc image to the desktop and then use Roxio Toast (Fit to Dvd) option to burn the image to a single layer Dvd.
If I were attempthing this with i-apps only the workflow would look something like ......
Make my 2 separate QT movies within iM6 => iDvd'08 => disc image to the desktop => Roxio Toast (Fit to Dvd) to make one single layer Dvd-R (using verbatim or maxell and lowering the burn speed to 4x or lower).

  • [Music] Option to exclude Commentary Tracks

The idea has been submitted before at least twice and become inactive. Perhaps it's time for a resubmit.
For anyone who has litened to artist radio or simply played (or shuffle played) an artists collection through, if that artist includes commenatry albums  - you now have dry speaking mixed in with your music.
Yes you can make a playlist for each artists and exclude the comentary albums - but why should you have to? Spotify is for music. If you're going to add other forms of audio, users need to be able to filter it en masse. What if you decided to add audio books and found that tracks from those books turned up in term searches and played. Users would not want this - yet this is exactly what happens with commentary albums.
Just try playing Jack Johnson. Click to play the first track  - you think you're going to have a nice chill time with an endless loop of balads and laid back guitar, then - all of a sudden you get an entire album of commentaries - which sound like they were recorded on a dictaphone.
This is not a music experience. My guests raise their eyebrows and laugh, thinking I had recorded the tracks from the radio or something. I get up from the table or unlock my phone and hurriedly press skip. But the next track is also commentary - in fact there are 12 of them.
Now what if every artists decides to release a commentary track for every song - it's cheap and easy and might earn them a few extra quid. before long every second track on Spotify is commentary. I'm sure you will you do something about it then. Why not do it now?
If the labels submit the albums without any distinguishing variable that you can use to filter them, then you wil need to keep doing what you do - reinvent the way music is distributed and consumed. Simply require that commentary tracks be tagged as such and allow users to exclude them. Personally I don't ever want to hear a single commentary track on Spotify. I'll bet the majority of users would feel the same.
Spotify is the music you would have had to buy on CD, streaming seamlessly if you pay your premium membership - no adds, no DJ chit chat, just music --- oops and commentaries.
    Thanks.

Updated: 2015-06-15Marked as new idea and edited the title slightly to make it easier to find via search. ;)
This idea wants an option to exclude commentary tracks from playing at all (radio, artist page, etc).
You might also want to add your kudos to a similar idea about excluding commentary tracks especially when shuffling an artist page here.

  • The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug EE commentary track?

    Greetings all,
I purchased the Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug extended edition on Tuesday via iTunes earlier this week. (It's actually my first iTunes movie purchase.) The movie works fine and I have been able to get access to the materials on iTunes extras. The movie was advertised as having a director's commentary track, but I can't seem to turn it on.
When I go to the audio/subtitles menu, I can see that there's a second English audio track, but I can't seem to select it. Here's a screen shot of the menu:
As you can see, English (Audio Track 2) is greyed out. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?

    Hi liljebarnet,
I see that you may be experiencing an issue with a purchase you have made from the iTunes Store. It sounds like you may need to report this issue to the iTunes Store in order to get the issue resolved, and you can find more information about doing this below:
