Simple concept hard to grasp

Hi,
I'm having a tough go trying to grasp what I think should be a simple
concept in Oracle. I've installed Oracle 8i 8.1.5 on a Red Hat 6.1
machine. The installation went fine. A database was created, and I can
create and manipulate the tables provided by the sample SQL scripts.
What I don't understand is how to create and access another, different
database. It seems like this should be possible. And if I can create a
second database, how do I connect to a particular database? When I do
'connect internal' in the Server Manager, which database am I connecting
to? Also, are there any good on-line Oracle for Linux tutorials that
deal with things beyond the installation? I have three different
O'Reilly books on Oracle 8i, and I can't seem to find anything in them
which address this multiple database issue that I'm struggling with.
Thanks,
Hidong

Actually, I have O'Reilly's Oracle Essentials. There's a section called "Accessing a Database", which describes general concepts, but it doesn't give any command details. I'm really looking for some documentation with command details. Can you recommend anything? The only previous database experience I have is SQL Server on Windows NT. Thanks,
Hidong

I have a macbook air and need additional storage should i consider a time capsule or a simple external hard drive?

If you move live files (files you don't want to lose) to an external drive, you need to back them up.  Any files not backed up are at risk of loss.  Hard drives and SSDs can fail at any time.  It is hard to backup a Time Capsule so a TC should be used only as a backup device.
Do you have a Time Machine backup now?  If so, and if it is large enough, you can backup your internal and external disk to it using Time Machine.  If not, you all need to purchase an external drive or TC as your backup device.  (I recommend an external hard drive for backup instead of a TC.)  Ideally the backup drive should be twice the size of what you are backing up but 50% larger will work so if you have an external 1 TB disk and an internal 250 GB SSD then a 2 TB backup disk will work well.
By default, Time Machine will not backup the external disk.  You need to remove it from the exclusions list:
To have Time Machine backup your system disk and your external offload disk up onto your Time Machine disk:
 > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.

  • Hi, I am having a hard time grasping the pen tool in Illustrator

Hi, I am having a hard time grasping the pen tool in Illustrator, but have a decent knowledge of it in Photoshop and was wondering is there any quality loss when making work paths in Ps and exporting to Ai?

Do we know what version of Photoshop and Illustrator you are using?  If you have a full CC subscription, then you can use Libraries to share assets between your Adobe apps.  As far as I can tell, you need to turn your work paths into shape layers for this to work.  Just select the Move tool, and drag from the document window into the Libraries panel.  Even if Illustrator is still open, you switch to it, and your shape will be there in the Illustrator Libraries panel, and be fully functional (as in way more options that it had in Photoshop).

  • I have a huge iphoto library and an HP simple save hard drive which has been mac formated.

the discssion board states to close iphoto, go to folders, locate, click and drag library to new location (ie-my HP simple save which has been formated to mac)  When I look in my libraries, I have several for libraries, including some that say 6.
When I open one, not all my photos are contained, only a part of my entire iphoto library
which one do I use--and how can to confirm that ALL my photos are on my external hard drive?
    thank you for your help---
    [email protected]

Open a Finder Window and go to your Username then to the Pictures folder. In there you will find a file, actually a folder but I won't get into that, called "iPhoto Library.photolibrary". It is that files (Folder listed as a Package) you need to Copy to your external drive.

  • I do not understand a simple concept on Motion

I hate to admit it, but I just can't understand this concept. All I want to do is use the red button (keyframe record) to move a simple graphic. Say my timeline is 10 seconds. I just want to move an element from the middle to the lower left. But, I do not want to move this element until 3 seconds in. Every time I try to use the record button, the element starts its' motion from the beginning of the timeline! I don't want to move it until 3 seconds in. I have no problems using key frames in FCP. What am I missing here? Any help will be appreciated and so will my sanity.
    Best,
    Tom

    hi,
this can catch us all out ( I speak for myself!) at times. A common workflow for me is to move to where I want the animation to start, click the red button, in the parameters inspector change the value I want to animate and then change it right back again. This creates a keyframe but maintains the original value. I just find this easier than clicking on the drop down menu and selecting add keyframe, and it focuses my attention on the parameter I'm animating. Then hop forward to the end point of the animation and change the value to its end mark.

  • HP simple save hard drive

I dropped my HP simple drive on the floor after saving files in it. Tried opening it on my laptop if it's ok but it won't let me run it. I wanna know if I will still be able to retrieve all the save files from it esp. the pictures of my daughter since birth. Can someone help me solve the problem, please?

You can search the web for "how to open a simple save drive". It quite simple process, U-Tube videos have been made of the process. Then you'll need an adapter to test the hard drive.

  • Best simple external hard drive?

    Hello,
I love my USB flash drive because it is simple. It is just an empty folder and I just drag my data over to it. This is how I would like to have my external hard drive to be also. Im not big on installing new unnecessary programs to back up my files but if its a must I will.
My parents own a seagate and when I tried to plug that into my mac it wouldnt work.
So I dont know what will work with a mac.
    The specs I want are
    500gigs or more
    Firewire
    under 300 dollars
    Suggestions?

    ...Do they beak down?
    Matt, EVERYTHING breaks down.
I am not a paranoid, Matt. But on my desk right now I am looking at...
One portable external hard drive, bootable, CURRENT, in my MacBook Pro's carrying case
A desktop portable external hard drive, CURRENT as of last night, on my desktop.
There's TWO, separate backups in separate hard drives.
IN ADDITION, there are a few documents backed up to my .Mac account. And I use Mozy to backup a couple important docs.
Hard drives are as inexpensive at they have ever been. (Well, young un, I remember payin' $500 for a 30 MB drive - that's right: 30MB.) The portable one means that an AC line surge or fire that takes out my house won't kill me. Having important data backed up to Mozy and .Mac means I can grab 'em wherever and whenever I want.
It all depends upon how valuable your data is. Play a few games and have huge chat logs on your machine? Well, don't sopend the bucks for a backup hard drive. Have client data that you need to save? Then having local backups and more only make sense.

  • Simple Question--hard answer?

This should not be that hard, so I'm guessing I'm just blind. Someone emails me a stupid, funny song/ad/random mp3. I click on it. Its added to my iTunes library. Why? What makes iTunes think I want to add EVERY mp3 I double click on to my iTunes library? I don't need the file stored twice--once in my email, once in my library.
Where is the setting to turn off this irritating behavior? Its like there is an invisible Clippy, saying, "I see you have clicked an mp3. I've gone ahead and added it to your library. You're welcome!"

That's not what I want though--I DO want it to copy to my folder when purposefully adding to my library.
Right now, double click = add to library.
I want is double click to equal "play", and then, if i actually like the song I'm listening to that is say, on my desktop, to go to iTunes File|Add to Library, browse to that song and then have it add to my library, copying it to my music folder.
My workaround is just to set Real Player as my default mp3 player, but I would rather not do that.

  • [Theory] A simple but hard question about OO programming

I was in my first class of OO programming (4th year of computer engineering in Valencia) and the professor gave us homework.
The homework was a simple question about OO programming (it is not about a specific language, though we are going to use Java in the practice sessions), we shall find an answer to it and discuss it in class the next day.
    The question was:
    "May classes also be objects?"
    which can be said as:
"May classes be instances of an(other) classes?"
I hope that you, archers, can enlighten me in this question

tvale wrote:I believe an object is an instance of a class.
Yup, that's true. Let's see... An object is an instance of a class, so we can have a lot of objects coming from one class.
We can say an object is not a class because it has a state (think about a light, it has a state: on or off, but a class light is not on/off, because in a class we just describe the behavior that class should have.
But what we're asking here is if a class can have a state. I think it may refer to static properties about the objects.

  • Simple question, hard solution (for me)

    Hi,
I've made a jsp base application that works without problems
Now I have to execute a class included in WAR file by command prompt because I want to make a scheduled batch procedure.
I went to war directory and:
    C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1\webapps>java it.agic.interventi.ConnessioneDB -classpath Interventi.war
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: it/agic/interventi/ConnessioneDBPlease, HELPPPPPP !!!!!!
    Thanks in advance
    Bye

Yes your classpath is wrong indeed. You need to build your classpath so that it contains all the thirdparty library jars as well.
The "java" command gives the following hint:
-classpath <class search path of directories and zip/jar files>
A : separated list of directories, JAR archives,
and ZIP archives to search for class files. So from this I can assume that in this directory you specified as your classpath:c:\program files\apache group\tomcat 4.1that the mail jar is not present there. You must get the correct path where these jars are present, and edit your "java" command's classpath option appropriately.

  • SIMPLE QUESTION - HARD TO ANSWER?`

I have an iPod Nano. Very very cool little media unit.
I have itunes on my iMac.
I have a playlist I've been building for my angelic wife.
I've been buying songs from itunes store that go into this list.
    QUESTION:
When I plug my ipod into my imac to download the songs, I only want the songs from this playlist on my ipod. I don't want it just randomly grabbing songs from my Library like it does each time. How do i get my ipod Nano to grab just the playlist I created for my wife?
Does the ipod just go for whatever is in your Library, or can I teach it to go for songs just in this one playlist?
If you can answer this, I will give you 200 Karma points to get you out of any mess you think you got yourself in.
(here's another little question: did you know that itunes store doesn't really have all the songs that really matter? Did you know that it only has ONE Jethro Tull song? What's up with that?)
    mac imac 20in. 2.1 gig   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

With the iPod connected, go into your iTunes preferences and set it to 'Update Only Selected Playlists'.
Choose the one playlist that you want to sync.
Anything in the playlist will be copied to the iPod. Anything not in the playlist will be removed from the iPod.
    More info here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ipgettingstartedt2.html
RE: Jethro Tull... yes, it's a shame.
There are many artists/labels who do not have licensing deals to sell content through iTMS. I'm sure Apple would stock every song ever created if they could. We can only hope that changes someday.

  • A Simple Concept I don't get...

I don't really understand what the point is of giving Methods variable arguments. i.e
    void showVars(int one, int two) {
    //etc.
Whats the point in declaring one and two in the method and not just in the body of the code? Sorry, I realise this is probably a stupid question...

The variables "in the class' body" are known as member variables. They are class variables (static) or instance variables (non-static). The idea is that they represent state. Class variables represent state for the class, and instance variables represent state for the object (the instance of the class).
Method arguments represent input to the method. Sometimes the method may use or manipulate the state of the object. But sometimes the method may need data that's not properly part of the state of the object, so we pass it as a parameter.
For instance, a String object has an array of characters as an instance variables that represents that String's state.
It has a method length() that doesn't take any parameters. It simply returns information about the string's state--the number of characters in that string.
It also has a method charAt(int index) that takes an int as a parameter and retrieves the character at that position. It wouldn't make sense to simply have an instance variable called index. That's not part of the string's state. You're asking for some information about the state, but not the whole state, just a piece, so you use the parameter to specify which piece of the state.
For private methods, where an object is just calling it's own methods as decomposition of a problem into smaller pieces, you have more latitude. Often times you could either pass data from method to method to method, or you could just make an instance variable that holds the data from one call to the next. I tend to go with the former, unless it really makes sense that that data exists as part of the object's state independent of any method calls in progress.

  • Concept of Abstraction and Polymorphism

    Hi friends,
I'm just new to Java.I studied a little bit of C, I'm currently studing VB and Java.
There are one or two concepts in Java that are very hard to grasp for me.
The first is abstraction and the second is polymorphism.
Can anybody outline to me in simple words(use simple example if needed)what those 2 concepts are all about?
    Thanks a lot
    Marco

In your example, you could make Vehicle an abstract
class. You can't simply have a vehicle, but you can
have a car which IS a vehicle. In your abstract class
Vehicle, you might define an abstract method public
int getSeats() (you want it to be abstract because it
changes from one type of vehicle to the next). So the
class Car extends Vehicle, overrides the method
getSeats() and returns 5. The class Ute extends
Vehicle, overrides the method getSeats() and returns 2
(you might make a SuperCabUte that extends Ute and
returns 5, or whatever).Radish is right,
Think of it as modelling of real life. You would generalise the description of your car as a Vehicle (abstraction, which can be implemented as an interface in Java) where in fact you own a car
Similarly you can have an inteface called RealEstate where in fact you own a TwoStoreyHouse ( a class that implements the RealEstate interface)
the interface can describe the general 'characterstics' of real estate properties ie land size, council rates etc.

  • An Open Letter To Apple Regarding iTunes' Lack Of Simple Functionality

Why, when you select, "Convert Selection To AAC," does it not do what it says? It certainly does not convert anything! Instead, it COPIES the .mp3 file and redundantly places it BACK into the library creating an abundance of duplicates (along with the original .mp3 that can't be played on my iPod - thereby further cluttering my library with "duplicates."
Why isn't there a simple "prune" function that will let you automatically (think large scale - think 70 GB Library!!) delete duplicates based on user preferences (IE: if duplicate's bitrate is <128, then delete - or base it on date. Build the functionality in for us to choose)!!??
This would be VERY easy to implement and it would certainly make your customer base A LOT happier!
Why doesn't my iPod actually sync 100% with what's in my library? I've tried to trace this down but it's a flakey bug that I can't figure out with my limited intelligence/abilities. Surely you have an IV&V dept. of some kind there? Please figure this bug out. I paid for all of my music (I have a LOT of CD's...), I paid a LOT for this iPod - I'd really like to have 100% functionality. I don't think this is an unreasonable expectation.
Why, when you select, "Convert Selection To AAC," and the conversion process encounters an error during "conversion" does the conversion not SKIP to the NEXT file and document the failure on the previous file? Maybe run a log of the problematic files? Again, think BIG LIBRARY that takes a FEW DAYS to convert.
This particular lack of function takes an already cumbersome task and turns it into an insurmountable one. Picture this scenario: It's late one night, I start the process, go to bed, but find out in the morning that 2.5 hours into the AAC conversion the whole thing failed because it didn't like ONE .mp3 file.. OK, I delete the file, RESTART the process the next day [early morning] only to return home from work to see that 4 hours after I left for work it bombed out again on another .mp3 it didn't like! Can you see where this might start to be irritating????
This brings me to my next observation of lack of basic functionality:
Duplicates are PILING UP AT THIS POINT! Because it's started "converting" and keeps failing on a random file every few hundred .mp3's and just stops, I have to start ALL over again, therein producing MORE duplicates that I have to manually delete.
Also, why won't iTunes let me get song info "Advanced/Get CD Track Info" for files that I didn't purchase? It's really petty to take away that functionality just because we didn't buy the music through you. Your (whomever's...) database will (should!) still ID a song. Let us have that functionality. The goal here is to have a clean USABLE library that's properly indexed. You are intentionally sabotaging basic functionality!
I ask anyone to provide insight on what I've written. You're welcome to call me a fool but I believe I've been as un-accusatory as possible and stated literal facts.
Also, anyone that has found a work-around to any of these problems is especially encouraged to respond.
Thanks for taking the time to read this!
    All the best,
    Ed Traylor ([email protected])

You need to utilize Google a bit more. Get yourself ed-u-m-cated on music Codecs, database management also even iTunes. Even browsing these Discussions would give you some of the answers you desperately require.
"Why, when you select, "Convert Selection To AAC," does it not do what it says?"
It does that exactly. It converts the song into the new format. It never indicated that it would (or would not) replace the song for you. In fact, many of us would not like that feature as we usually convert Lossless files to various other Lossy files retaining both. No way would I like my Lossless file to be deleted. Adding another option switch could be done but only makes the iTunes program more complicated and easy to misuse.
"Why isn't there a simple "prune" function that will let you automatically (think large scale - think 70 GB Library!!) delete duplicates"
Simple concept, but difficult to program in the computer world due to the varying definitions of 'duplicate'.
    See: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1811139 .
Also see this for some workarounds: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1823390 .
"Why doesn't my iPod actually sync 100% with what's in my library?"
Hard to diagnose given the lack of info provided by you. Perhaps you have some problems with your purchased music. Perhaps you have some formats that iTunes can play but the iPod cannot. You need to do more investigation into the types of songs that do not transfer. Start a new topic with your question and some detailed obsevations.
"Why, when you select, "Convert Selection To AAC," and the conversion process encounters an error during "conversion" does the conversion not SKIP to the NEXT file and document the failure on the previous file?"
Lookee here...A valid criticism. This would be a nice feature to add, but you may want to question yourself as to why you are converting all the MP3s to AAC. You're not gaining anything audio-wise, and are losing music quality. See: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1823513
"Also, why won't iTunes let me get song info "Advanced/Get CD Track Info" for files that I didn't purchase?"
It does - only for tracks ripped from commercial CDs. This is not an iTunes limitation, but a CDDB (Gracenote) limitation (again, Google will help you here) based on how commercial CDs and their music tracks are identified. Any music program will have the same problem. Obviously, you are not trying to identify songs ripped directly from a commercial CD.
"You're welcome to call me a fool"
You're not a fool, but you could have done more research before you launched your post.

  • How to use Time Machine to back up and restore from 2 external hard drives

    Hi I need some help
I am about to switch internal hard drives and kept a time machine back up to an external hard drive until I had filled it up. That was a few months ago and in order to make space I deleted some files from my internal drive. In the last few months I have filled that space (About 50GBs)on my internal drive. Needless to say those new files aren't backed up.
What I want to do is after switching internal hard drives restore everything including the new files apps and updates etc via time machine
Can I back up my most recent computer situation as it is to a new external hard drive using TM and then restore that to the new internal hard drive and then restore specific folders from my first external TM hard drive?
    Thanks a million
    Rotang

I am sorry, i am confused about what exactly you are trying to say here.
well, Time machine works on very simple concept. it backs up either all the data from your computer or only selected data(customized) from the computer.
to restore you can follow these steps as mentioned below
    To restore files:
Open a window for the item you want to restore.
For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. If you want to recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail.
If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock.
If Time Machine isn’t in the Dock, look for it in the Applications folder.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through all the backups Time Machine has created.
If you need more information about an item, double-click to preview it.
The windows behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it and then click Restore.
You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk.
If an item you restore has the same name as another item on your computer, you’re asked if you want to keep the current item, the restored item, or both.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if it is found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder. Time Machine may ask if you want to re-create one or more folders in order to return a restored item to its original location.
And with regards to your question,
Can I back up my most recent computer situation as it is to a new external hard drive using TM and then restore that to the new internal hard drive and then restore specific folders from my first external TM hard drive?
yes, you can do that but but this can be done only by navigating into the Time machine restore folder and then copying the uptdated folder to the destination folder(drive) manually..
