Simple File Rename- is there an on/off switch

Over many weeks I have done simple renames of filenames when in Edit or Grid by clicking the File Name in the Right Hand Panel, changing the name or cut and pasting parts of the name to other pictures.
Suddenly I cant do this any more. When I click on the file name I go to the renaming dialogue box often is not what I want as its much more long winded process for one photo.
I must have accidently switched this option off but I've no idea what I did . Does anyone know how I can return to being able to do simple edits to a file name again?

Open Automator
Choose Folder Action for type of document
At the top, for Folder action receives files and folders added to, select Other...
in the window that opens, select your Downloads folder, and then Choose
from the Actions on the left, drag Filter Finder Items over to the column on the right
Where it says Any Content, select Kind
Where it says Any, select music
Drag Move Finder Items over to the rightfor To: select other, and navigate to your user folder > Music > iTunes > iTunes Media > Automatically Add to iTunes
it should look like this:
close the window and give the folder action a name.

The on/off switch is the lone button at the top of the iPad.
It may or may not work to turn it back on depending on what happened.
The easiest thing to do if you know the iPad is charged is to hold down the Home and on/off buttons together for 10 to 15 minutes or until the Apple logo shows up. This will effectively reboot the iPad. no data should be lost though.

How do I import old FCP projects that have mysteriously changed to Linux Executable files? Is it as simple as renaming the files with the.fcp extension?

I had some FCP projects on an old G3 tower that I finally want to finish. I was able to grab everything, media, etc. to my macbook pro but all of the Final Cut Pro actual movies/projects have turned into "linux executable files" that FCP X won't import.
I tried googling this issue but didn't really see any good answers. Would it be as simple as renaming the files with the .fcp extension? I can't recall if my old version (really old) of FCP saves projects as .mov or .fcp files, but I'm assuming I'm not the only person this has happened to.

I had some FCP projects on an old G3 tower that I finally want to finish.
What version of FCP was this? The project files can probably no longer be opened in the newer version of the OS. You could try adding the .fcp suffix, but I don't think it will help for this. Projects files are .fcp.
Regardless of the version, no legacy FCP projects will import into FCPX.
Media is a different matter. These are probably QuickTime .mov files. If these are appearing as Unix ececutables, they're probably not recoverable either.

Is There A Way To Create A Simple File/Folder Tree...

Please forgive me if this has already been covered but I have searched and found no answer...
I am trying to create a web page to run on my local network, through iweb and apache, and have got everything I need working except this. I aim to be able to access my work files (masses of word documents and power-points) through the website but I can see no obvious way of doing this through iweb (short of adding individual hyperlinks to each file). Is there a tool or process I can use to create a simple folder tree in html that I can add to my site that lists all my files and allows my to "save target as" in windows (our college techie is still devoted to windows) ?

If you wanted to send a video as an mms from a mobile phone, the best option for exporting would be 3G in the quicktime export menu ( File > Export and it's in the drop down list).
Keep it short and small and you shouldn't have any probs. There are some miserly operators out there who block MMSs bigger than 100K

Try cleaning the lens and see if that will restore functionality to the DVD drive. Use a DVD lens cleaning disk, if you have a can of compressed air, shoot some into the slot or wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth) around a business card and insert it gently inside the slot.
If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and get a free diagnosis from them.

Limited batch file renaming options?

When batch-renaming a group of files, (currently using LR4 under Mac OS X 10.6.8) I can't see any way to do a simple sequential increment of a file number. For example, my files are typically numbered in the format "D 123456." I want to rename a new batch as D 123457, D 123458, D 123459, D 123460 etc. I cannot see an option in LR that will do that — all choices involve sequencing with -1, -2, -3 etc., or else "1 of 4" or dates or other non-useful (to me) text. Am I missing something or is this seemingly very simple thing impossible in LR? (My old MS Expression Media management application is far superior in this respect: I have total flexibility in file renaming.) Thanks for any advice.

I know where you're coming from, I still have a copy of Media Pro and it comes in handy sometimes. But there's no reason to prematurely judge Lightroom in this area. If you study the file renaming template editor you'll find that you can quickly customize the tokens and enter custom text in a way that'll generate the sequence you want:
The reason Lightroom puts in a dash is ensure compatibility with multiple file systems. But it's an option you can turn off. Note that this is in the Preferences dialog box because it affects any time Lightroom names or renames a file.
There's only one major way in which Lightroom batch renaming falls short: You can't batch find and replace text within the filename. Media Pro, Bridge, and many other free/cheap utilities can, but of course renaming files outside of Lightroom is not a good idea. Other than that, Lightroom can usually rename files as needed. In most other ways Lightroom is far better than Media Pro ever was.

First of all, LR truly rocks. Any Adobe folk reading this, please take this note as a massive pat on the back for your team. There's a lot of childish and naive negativity from people posting in this forum. And I suspect from folk who are not really your key market for this app. I feed my kids by running a photography business and have been shooting digital since the early 90s...ya know...
LR will be looked at as a massive sea change in the development of digital photography. The first time the entire workflow process is truly viable from end to end. What will make LR the ultimate winner in it's field is simply the integration with Photoshop. Aperture, Capture One etc cannot ever beat LR regarding this and so, just like the way that Excel and Word and Powerpoint all work together and everyone uses them, LR will inevitably become the de facto standard way of managing RAW images for pro photographers.
Even with the few bugs (specifically file movingon Mac OS10.4.9) LR has shaved HOURS off our workflow. We shoot around 250 gigs of images a month in our weddings and event business. Now all of our editors use LR. No more Capture One etc for us.
Here's the question - There seems to be no way to add leading zeros to a file rename command. So if you rename a batch of images they appear as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 etc so now when I look at them in Bridge or other apps, they are now sorted 1,10,11, etc
Now let me tell ya this is a pain.
Any comments or comfort that is is a known issue would be appreciated. All we want is a way to have the rename add the leading zeros like most other apps do...

PS By the way, I am a HARD *** about shoddy unstable software sold to pro photographers as the "prefect solution" that doesnt work as advertised...I am that guy that the tech support guys at certain companies dread. Yep, I simply expect an app to do what it says, just like the car I buy. I once resorted to sending the CEO of a certain software company an invoice for my time restarting, reinstalling the OS and bug finding another similar app. You can image, I got a personal call...heh...

 I just changed a folder of 85 images' names, and typed in 001 as my starting number. While no zeroes were prepended, the pix show up in order both in the Finder and in Bridge CS3.

File renaming and second copy

If I import RAW and tick 'Copy as DNG' and 'Make a second Copy' and 'File rename: Prefix-Date-Image#', the 'second' copies are not DNG and not renamed.
If I import JPEG and tick 'Copy' and 'Make a second Copy' and 'File rename: Prefix-Date-Image#', the 'second' copies are renamed!
So why in case of RAWs are the second copies not renamed? This bug precludes the use of more than one camera at a shoot.

How come??? I recall this was an old issue; is it too difficult to repair such a simple bug???

If this is changed, make sure it is a choice as otherwise the copy function is of no use to me. I do not want LR to make changes to the original files that I copy for backup in any way. I use the function for how it was designed (a temporary back up with no changes made to the files from the card) and make back ups of the files in the LR catalog separately. Once everything is safely backed up I can then delete the temporary copies.
I would guess there are lots of others like me who don't want this situation changed as we have been doing this for several years now since prior to LR 1 when the thing was in beta..

File Renaming w/ Illegal Chars

Making a file renaming program and making it so that the user can't name files using illegal windows characters (|"/\><*?)
Now I have created a case where it detects the user input if the user inputs illegal chars:

Well, to start with, this might be more simplistic. Since you're only comparing one character at a time, you don't need the strings:

}And that works just fine for me. I tested a few strings using that code and, each time, the thread entered the if block at the bottom if any of the character cases appeared in the string.
I couldn't find anything particularly wrong with your original code, though. Perhaps your if block at the bottom of your loop isn't behaving the way you think it should? Try using a debugger to verify that it enters the loop properly.
And, by the way, the String.indexOf method might be more helpful to you. It wouldn't be as efficient to test multiple characters (I don't think), but it would make your code simpler and that's always a plus. :)

Simple File Sharing in Windows XP

The simple file sharing that is automatically turned on in XP is
causing some problems with programs we run. An administrator can turn
it off, but as soon as any user logs onto the machine, the setting in
re-enabled. It would seem that the novell client or more likely Group
Policies set through the Workstation manager is turning it back on but
we cannot find where to change the setting. What can we do to turn
simple file sharing off and have it stay off for all users.

It looks like we had that setting correct the whole time except the
Security Setting check box was not checked. We're getting close! For
administrators it works great, simple file sharing is turned off when
they logon. However, the power users are still not able to change this
setting I think because of security access (when they logon the setting
never changes but the same change was made in thier policy package as
the admin package).
I thought maybe I could add the power users to another group to grant
them access to change that setting, but I don't want to give them
access they don't need. I saw that in C1 you can create custom groups
though dynamic local users. I went to add privileges to a custom
group, but there are no descriptions of what each privilege actually
gives the user. I could not find an explaination on novell's website
or in the help file. This may not work at all but right now I'm in a
trial and error situation. If anyone knows what privilege to add or
where to find descriptions of them, please let me know.
Or if you happen to know another reason why administrators might work
and power users don't, please let me know that also.

Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac work with OSX Server?

I wonder if I should install OSX Server on an iMac wher several users work on the same files and folders.
My question - before I do something I might regret:
Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac within several users really work with the help of OSX Server?
All I want to be able to do:
Admin creates a new folder1 and gives it read- and write access for user1 and user2.
User1 creates a subfolder1 in folder1, and a document1 in subfolder1.
User2 edits document1. Later Admin edits document1.
All these simple editing of files and folders (and subfolders) within a main folder should be possible. This is not possible now.
Is everything clear? I'm not a network specialist or something, I just want to give some co-workers access to some data on my computer without problems.

So what you need are recursive permissions.
I suggest you create a group and add user1 and user2 to that group. You can name that group whatever you want, but for now i will call it FSUsers
Execute this in terminal. Replace FSUsers with your new group
sudo chmod -R +a "FSUsers allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextat tr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/*
Replace /Users/Shared with the location of your shared folder. Make sure you keep the /* at the end (this allows all subfolders and files to get the same permissions.
If you need to add people to the share just add them to the FSUsers group, the FSUsers group should should also be allowed in the sharing preferences.

I am gettting the data from rs232 interms of 0 or 1. and i have to print it only if thereis a change in data from 0 to 1. if i use if-loop , each as much time there is 0 or 1 is there that much time the data gets printed. i dont know how to do this program please help me if anybody knows the answer

I have attatched the vi. Here in this it receives the data from rs232 as string and converted into binery. and indicated in led also normally if the data 1 comes then the led's will be off. suppose if 0 comes the corresponding data status is wrtten into the text file. But here the problem is the same data will be printed many number of times. so i have to make it like if there is a transition from 1 to o then only print it once. how to do it. I am doing this from few weeks please reply if you know the answer immediatly

Files Renamed when importing to LR4 and now can't find them in LR3

Help! What should I do???
Yesterday I installed LR 4 Beta. I had a folder with 300 images in it on LR 3, obviously all files had names. I imported these photos into LR4 to work with LR4 and they were renamed in the process. Now in my LR3 folder, all the files still have there old names and the "missing photo ?" and I assume that's because the name has been changed and LR3 can't find them. Any thoughts on an easy fix?

I must admit, I didn't pay too much attention when importing this "test"
group of photos to LR4, therein lies my problem. Now that I look at the
import settings that were used:
1. Files were not added or copied, they were "moved" to a new location and
also renamed.
2. Files were renamed starting with "264" using my regular import template.
Listed below are the first 10 photos with their original LR3 and he
changed LR4 names.
1201_001 changed to 1201_264-2
1201_002 changed to 1201_265-2
1201_003 changed to 1201_266-2
1201_004 changed to 1201_267-2
1201_005-Edit-Edit changed to 1201_268-2
1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_269-2
1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_270-2
1201_005-Edit-Edit-2 changed to 1201_271-2
I have a back up of my images on an EHD from several days ago which has the
original file names, but this backup only has 203 of the 268 images I
imported yesterday and are renamed.

ITunes 11 - I can't manually manage my files. Is there a work around? I have manually manage clicked. I win7 32. It worked after awhile after updating then it just stopped. I have reinstalled 11 but the same issue ocurred!

Sorry this is the 1st time and I don't know what to do. I have lost the ability to manually manage my music/video files. After upgrading it worked for a few days as I was adding music to my phone. After 2 days, I couldn't anymore. I have windows 7 ultimate 32, iTunes 11, and iPhone 4 on 6.0.1. With the iPhone connected, under the summary page, manually manger is clicked. iTunes Match is off in iTunes and on phone. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. Copied my media back into the media folder. I have also done a factory reset and restored from back up and still can't add music manually. All my music is stored on an external be aide the media folder is in the primary hard drive. I can try adding to the iTunes library and add that way without manually adding each song but I feel that defeats the purpose. I'm in contact with individual DJs that make their own music and yes it is sold intubes and that was never the issue before. I will do a factory reset on the phone, so a clean install of 11 again and just add my apps back but I don't know what else to do. Also, I am only using one computer to manage my files and it is the only computer authorized for my phone. There is no other computer! I am open to any ideas.

Update:
I mean that the dj's create their own music and the music isn't sold in iTunes. Also, I have done the factory reset clean, installation of Itunes 11 (*lost all of my apps - yeah the back up i have didn't have all the apps or they are read as apps but said that they are missing - redownloading them now the ones that can be retrieved now) and it still gives me the black "no" arrow when trying to drag and drop - but I have figured that I would just copy the files into the main library, but it defeats the purpose of having an external with all my files. Is there away to get iTunes to recognize my hd as the library? A new issue developed, it kept saying that it was connected to another library and to connect it would have to erase everything on the phone so I agreed. And it seems to be fine now besides the copy and paste. I have added a few more issues that risen since this began below.
A few more questions:
After a clean installation: I have lost most of the paid apps. Does Itunes back up a history or was it stricly on my computer? Some of these were paid apps and I dont want to have to purchase them again. There should be something connected to your name within the store account that stores all the purcchase you have made and allow you to redownload them as in the playstation network. Also, how do people retrieve lost apps if the only back up was on their computer that crashed? Is there any to get Itunes to recognize my external HD as a library of my music?
