Simple Finder options

I am setting up a new lab of iMacs and want to keep them on parental controls with simple finder. However, they're going to be able to access a flash drive that they attach. In Simple Finder, the flash drive doesn't show up. Is there a way to enable this?
Thanks!

In a simple finder no volume icons show in the desktop. This does not mean the volume isn't mounted.
The solution is to make and alias of the mounted volume and but it in the users Documents folder.
So log into the mac under the controlled account, from the simple finder menu choose run full finder. Then insert the flash drive. then open the Documents and drag the disk volume icon onto the Documents folder. Then goto the finder menu and re-enable the simple finder.
now the only issue is that during the quick 10 mins I spent coming up with this idea I did not find away to safely eject the flash drive. So when unplugging it you will see the error dialog stating that you may have lost data for not ejecting the drive.
in a lab environment have you considered using leopard server to control what the lab macs can be doing. It gives you much more flexibility.

  • Approved applications not showing up in simple finder (parental controls)

    I set up a limited access account for my son and turned on the simple finder option. I went through and selected the programs that I want him to have access to. However, not all the selected applications show up in the simple finder of the limited account. A few programs that were downloaded (a simple paint like program and a word processing program) don't show up, and I can't figure out how to get my son access to these short of turning off the simple finder. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    I'm not sure what the answer to this would be, because I don't use the Simple Finder mode much. However, you may have to specify in the Parental Controls preferences exactly which applications you want on his account. For example, instead of taking off some applications, add on the paint application and such. Post back here if you need more details or if that doesn't work. Another thing you could always do is to copy an application over your account into his, although I'm not entirely sure how you could do that. Hope this helps.

  • Simple Finder

    We just gave my daughter a new MacBook. I used the migration assistant to set it up from her old iMac. She came to me and said she can't add items to the dock. Sure enough that's true. Research led me to Simple Finder being the probable culprit. More research sent me to Parental Controls page of Accounts Preferences. Unfortunately, she is set up as the administrator and you can't turn on parental controls for administrator user. Therefore, the Simple Finder option described in the support articles doesn't appear on that page. How do I turn off Simple Finder? Thanks

    Are you certain that "Simple Finder" is enabled for the account? It is true that "Simple Finder" users are unable to modify the "Dock", but it isn't the only thing that could cause the ability to modify the "Dock" to be lost. Normally it isn't possible to apply "Parental Controls" to an "admin" account via the GUI, and enabling "Simple Finder" or locking the "Dock" on an "admin" account isn't something that could happen by accident. However, there are third-party utilities that make this all too easy to do, which is unfortunate because their effects persist after the app has been deleted...
    In case such an application has been used, try logging in to the affected account, launching "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering these commands:<pre>
    defaults delete com.apple.dock contents-immutable
    osascript -e 'tell application "Dock" to quit'
    </pre>
    Otherwise, try deleting the user's "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist" file, logging out and back in. This should reset the "Dock" back to defaults.
    If that doesn't work, this command should indicate whether or not any user "limitations" have been applied to the account ('No such key: mcx_settings' would be expected if there are no restrictions):<pre>
    nicl . -read /users/`whoami` mcx_settings</pre>

  • Can I enable simple finder for network accounts?

    Can I enable simple finder for network accounts?

    This was possible (drop dead easy) through MCX.  It was one checkbox.  If you are supporting older machines, you might still be able to push out MCX settings.  My experience with 10.8.x is that MCX is inconsitent at best.
    In Profile Manager...  Best suggestion is to look at creating a custom profile.  For what it is worth, this is the default MCX setting if the Simple Finder option was set on a user.  Note the InterfaceLevel = Simple.

    I have upgraded one of our network mac minis to mavericks and have created a test server for it, i am trying to use WGM to restrict the finder for students to simple finder this works but no finder launches at all, when i create a local account on the machine and use parental controls to push out simple finder when you click on the documents folder in the dock it opens up a finder window that has no sidebar and no toolbar this allows you to drag and drop files into apps (this is what i am trying to achieve with WGM for domain users). is there a way of making WGM push out the "same" simple finder as parental controls does it is not an option under the parental controls tab in WGM

    Problem is you're doing what a lot of beginners do, trying to
    create a
    page by using one single table and splitting the cells into
    numerous
    cells......that aint going to work as you have found out.
    It doesn't help either that you are allowing Fireworks to
    generate this
    code. When you do that it normally produces fragile code that
    the
    browser tries its best to interpret and a lot of times fails
    The design you're trying to produce is a fairly basic 2
    column table
    which you should ideally set up directly in Dreamweaver.
    A sticking plaster option would be to remove all the elements
    in your
    navigation side bar and merge that column back into one
    single cell. You
    can do that by click-dragging in Dreamweaver then in the
    properties
    inspector where it says 'cell' in the bottom left corner
    click the white
    square icon which will merge all the cells into one.
    The downside to this is that it may upset the fragile code
    created by
    Fireworks and throw your page into even more turmoil.
    If it does work you then need to insert another table (a
    nested table)
    into the cell which you merged back into one. Then put your
    navigation
    buttons into it.
    Tables that are independent of one another cannot interact
    and so you
    create a more stable environment for your design.

  • USB Thumb Drive with Simple Finder

    Hey everyone,
    I'm trying to find a way that a user account restricted and using the Simple Finder feature would still be able to save their data to a USB Drive. I know that the drive shows up in the save dialog (and so does every other file on the system which doesn't seem very secure) but what I'd really like is for the drive to still show up on the desktop like it does normally.
    Is there anyway to do this under Simple Finder or do I need to seek out other options?
    Thanks!

  • Simple form option tag in PtG

    Hi, got a problem with the simple form option
    Here's my code:
    LOOP
    FETCH my_dyncursor INTO my_1;
    EXIT WHEN my_dyncursor%NOTFOUND;
    -- Anzeige der vorhandenen Werte der Dimension
    IF my_1 IS NOT NULL THEN

    END IF;
    END LOOP;
    Important to me is the value of the SimpleFormOption: the that isgenerated out of my Database looks like this: Laser Disk Sale
    The hyperlink in the IE5.5 looks like this:
    param=Laser+Disk+Sale
    this works correct.
    But if I use the phone.com Simulator, the spaces of the string are not replaced by "+".
    It looks like this:
    param=Laser Disk Sale
    Disk and Sale get Lost!
    So afterwards i ran into errors.
    Has anybody a solution?
    Thx.

  • Find option is greyed out in Administrator ? How do I enable it ?

    I have a number of business areas and I'd like to search to see whether a folder item exists, and if so, where. Unfortunately, although there is a Find option on the Edit menu, it is continually greyed out, obviously meaning I can't use it.
    Does anyone know why its there and what its use is, and in what circumstances I can use it ?
    I guess I could get the same info by running an EUL report with a filter, but that's a bit long-winded for a simple Find operation.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi john,
    Does anyone know why its there and what its use is, and in what circumstances I can use it ?Its use to search the folders in the Business areas.
    Which version of discoverer are you using?
    The graying out of the icons might be due to the cache memory of java.go through this link for details
    [http://learndiscoverer.blogspot.com/2006/06/lost-or-grayed-out-icons-in-discoverer.html]
    hope it helps you.

  • HELP...Stuck in Simple Finder mode...

    I recently installed Snow Leopard on my computer. I remember it asked something about the finder, and I think I may have chose Simple Finder mode. Is there a way to revert to Full Finder Mode? "Run Full Finder" is not an option in the Finder menu.

    If I'm not in Simple Finder, where is this "Go" menu that my friend says I should have?
    No idea, but you definitely don't have Simple Finder enabled. I checked, on another machine here... your Finder menu would be drastically different, among many, many other things. If you don't have a Go menu between View and Window in the Finder, I honestly have no idea what you might have done. I suspect you're going to need to reinstall the system. I'd advise making an appointment with a Genius at an Apple Store and taking your machine in for them to look at.
    I'm trying to access my system dictionary so that I can use this educational game he created. But, this dictionary is no installed, and I don't have a "Go" menu.
    I'm not sure why you would have to locate the system dictionary file manually to use his game or why you believe that the dictionary is not installed when you can't find the Go menu to access it. Open the Terminal and paste in the following command:
    open /usr/share/dict
    This should open that folder in the Finder, showing the desired words file.
    I don't know why this is, but I remember being given two options when installing "Snow Leopard" that had to do with the Finder. So, I'm thinking I must have chose the wrong option.
    I don't recall being given any such choice with any Mac OS X installation... can you recall the wording of the message?

    Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, my children cannot logout. The accounts use Simple Finder and have Parental Controls set. To log out, we must Force Quit Finder. How do I fix this? Also, empty Trash does not empty the trash.

    enable full finder. go to home/library/preferences and delete the files com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.finder.plist. then control-option click on finder in the dock and choose 'relaunch'. then start Activity Monitor ((it's in /Applications/Utilities) and force-quit Dock. switch back to simple finder and see if it works better now.

  • Equivalent to ZAM 7 "Find" options?

    In ZAM7, there was a "Find" option under Reports that opened up a page full of fields that one could search on. This is probably the most often used feature in ZAM7 by our PC Techs. I can't find any way to offer them an equivalent in ZCM11. What am I missing?
    For instance, finding a laptop by its serial number is a very simple matter in ZAM7. How can I do that in ZCM11?

    Hi Holly,
    The advanced search will search subfolders, it's just totally not intuitive
    How to get it to search subfolders:
    Either:
    1) On the ZCC -> Devices do your advanced search (it'll search everything then, including servers). Or so I was told.
    or
    2) Go to ZCC -> Devices -> Workstations
    Check the box for "search subfolders" and THEN click the advanced search and execute a saved search. I do this all the time, so I know this one works.
    Again, not totally intuitive.

  • Manage Items in Simple Finder

    I have a three year old who likes watching BBC iPlayer. I have created a managed account and invoked Simple Finder to limit the potential damage he could cause to the computer from random mouse clicks etc.
    This works great for the most part but the down side is that my computers' Shared Folder appears (right next to the Trash Can). You don't need to be Einstein to figure out what is going to happen to all my photos, videos and documents
    I have tried everything i know to remove the Shared Folder from the Dock - but it is locked - EVEN if i run Full Finder!
    Can someone please tell me how i can fix this clear oversight?
    I really would like to create an account that automatically runs one application (safari) to one web site (or white list) and logs out if they quit the application. A really locked down account.
    Anyway - removing the Shared Folder would be enough - if possible.
    Advice please?

    Mel,  Sure, although that is "copying," not "burning."  It is easily done, as follows:
    Insert the USB stick into your computer, and open it up so it looks like a folder.  Highlight the songs you want in iTunes, and drag them into the folder.
    If you normally run iTunes in full screen mode, make it smaller so that you can do the drag.
