Simple iPod Sync Question

If I delete something I've uploaded into the iPod from my iMac, will it automatically delete it from my iPod next time it's syncs?
I have a TV show that I downloaded on the iMac, uploaded it into the iPod, and now I want to delete the show off of my iMac's HD? If I do so, will it get deleted off of the iPod because I don't want it to.
(It's a 5th G 60GB iPod)

If the iPod is set to Auto update, it will get deleted.
Set it to Manual update to not delete it off the iPod.

Crashing issues, and ipod sync question

Hi, first off, I'm running Aperture 2.1.4 on a new MBP snow leopard 10.6.1
My first question should be easy. Whenever I plug in my ipod, Aperture opens and wants to import the photos I've put on it into a folder. How do I stop Aperture from opening every time I plug it in?
My next question is about crashing. Ever since I upgraded to snow leopard, it seems like whenever I use the retouching brush 4-10 times, aperture freezes and then force quits itself. I've sent the auto-response message that pops up to Apple every time, but I'm not expecting much to come of that. Is there anything to do to stop this from happening? Has it been documented before or am I the only one with this problem?
One final bonus question. I'm importing RAW files (from a Nikon D300) but at first the previews are very, very different. I believe this is because my camera is set to the "vivid" setting, but when I first turn on quick preview before all the images are imported, the images I look at appear very contrasty and saturated, even though I would guess the vivid settings applied in my camera are for jpgs only, and don't affect raw images at all. How and why is aperture pulling this information from the camera when it doesn't relate to the photo? I don't care if this question is answered or not, it's not a huge deal. I was just curious.

Eventually, you'll probably have to Restore it, and a Restore will wipe the contents. You'll need the library on your computer to resync the songs.
Why not invest in an external hard drive. They're not too expensive. Also...what file type are your songs. Some types eat up a lot more memory than others.

IPod syncing questions

Hello All,
I would like to do the following:
Open iTunes and download podcasts A,B,C,D.
Attach my iPod and copy podcasts A,B,C,D.
Detach iPod.
Delete podcasts A,B,C,D from iTunes on my computer.
Download podcasts E,F,G,H on iTunes.
Attach iPod and copy podcasts E,F,G,H without having to lose podcasts A,B,C,D.
Is this possible? If yes how?
I simply did not know how to even search for the question in the forums since I simply don't understand the concept of "syncing". Why not just use the word copy like all normal human beings?

Quick (and possibly simple) iPod migration question...

Currently I am the proud owner of a first-gen iPod Touch 8GB, but I'm looking at upgrading to a second-gen Touch or possibly an iPhone. My question is, if I get a new device, will I be able to sync and use all the apps I have now on my 1st-gen Touch with the new Touch or new iPhone? And will they retain all the settings they had?
Also, a bit of a side question, but does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do with my current Touch once I upgrade, besides sell it?

I only speak from experience using the iPhone that I own. I own a first Gen and Second Gen. And I use the same PC to transfer and sync music and apps between both of them daily.
Obviously though this may not be the same results for the touch But I do not see how this would be much different as the touch is pretty much like iPhone minus the cell part. Again the only thing I am not 100% sure about is if the data from each app will carry over to new touch. But if first touch has been backed up like iPhone's can. Then you can connect the new touch and hopefully restore a backup file from first gen touch to it. Keep in mind it may prevent this if the 2nd gen has outdated software. So it may need to be updated before you can restore a file to it.

IPod sync question - how to restore playlists

I have a new MacBook Pro and Geek Squad trensferred my music but not my playlists. Can I restore them from my iPod?

The simple version of above:
iTunes Files to Backup (anytime you make additions or changes to the Music or Library that you want to retain)
1) All music files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘iTunes Music’ folder)
2) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
3) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
4) Any XML playlist files created for Playlist retention
5) The two iTunes.pref files (optional)
-- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
-- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
6) The XML file of Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes saved from the main Library and created by Otto’s SaveRatings script (also optional, but recommended):

IPod Sync Question

So I have an album downloaded from the iTunes store on my iPod. A couple days ago I saw the actual cd in a store so I bought it. Now I want to replace the iTunes store downloaded songs with the songs imported from the actual CD. I think the easiest way to do it is this:
1. Delete songs off iTunes.
2. Import CD.
3. Plug in iPod and let sync.
I'd think that would do it. However, I think there is some issue where iTunes will just assume that the songs are the same since the tags are identical, etc and therefor will not replace the song with the new cd version and instead see that nothing has changed. Therefor, I'm thinking what I really have to do is this:
1. Plug in iPod and let sync.
2. Delete songs off iTunes.
3. Sync iPod so the songs are deleted off iPod.
4. Import CD
5. Sync iPod to copy new cd versions on iPod.
So will the first method described be enough or do I need to take the extra steps in method 2 in order for it to work?
I've run in to this issue before when I ripped a song off a cd, found that it had skips, cleaned cd, reripped it, and sync'd. Then I found that the song on my iPod still had skips, even though the song in my iTunes did not. But the sync function would not replace the skipped file with the new one (i think) because they are identical. In the situation presented in this thread however, one file is downloaded from iTunes store and one is from the cd so they aren't identical.
BTW, I have 120GB iPod Classic and using Windows with current verion of iTunes.

I would take route 2. A few extra steps will guarantee that the new tracks will sync over.

IPod syncing question

In my itunes, I only have music, no videos, games, movies, podcasts, or shows. I just connected my ipod to charge it, and sync it. Under the ipod summary, "sync movies", "sync TV shows", "sync Podcasts", "sync Photos", "sync Contacts", and "sync Games" were checked, along with the music. I just want to know if, since I don't have any movies, videos, photos, etc in my itunes, did syncing them, along with my music, take any space on my ipod?
Also, it states that my 30GB ipod has 27.84 GB capacity. Why is this?

1. No. These options will only transfer data to the iPod if content of that type exists in the iTunes library.

Audiobooks ipod sync question

I ripped several books on CD into MP3 format, then using Audiobook Builder, created the m4b version that is compatible with itunes.
Using itunes 8, each book is listed with it's own cover, and within it has it's tracks that make up the book. I have one book that each chapter is one track, so there are 11 tracks there, and I have 3 stephen king novels, that are about 28 hours each, so each book is divided into 3 sections (12 hours being the longest a file can be).
When I sync it into my ipod, I go into the audiobook section and see each individual file as part of a long list, and not set up the way I was hoping; which like my music, I go into the artist folder first, then pick the album, then the track. Is there something like this where I go into the author, then the book, then the track?
The audio book was ripped from CD, and might not have the right ID3 tag that my ipod would need to work. Or maybe my fifth generation ipod doesn't have this feature.

I have 777 songs on my IPOD NANO. However, I only have 566 songs in my ITUNES for Windows music library because I accidently deleted the songs from another IPOD and deleted the entire library in ITUNES. I restored the ITUNES library by transfering music from my documents in the C drive, the result of which is that I have only 566 songs in my ITUNES library.
If I plug in the IPOD NANO with 777 songs and sync it with my ITUNES which currently has 566 songs, will the extra 211 songs on my IPOD NANO get erased during the sync process?

Since moving my iTunes library to iCloud, only my purchased music syncs to my iPod classic. The music from CDs loaded years ago do not sync. Any clues on what setting(s) I need to look at?

Simple MIDI sync question...

Can you run 2 separate MIDI devices into LOGIC via separate MIDI cables (into the imac), or do you have to have the 2 devices running to a MIDI interface, and then in to LOGIC via one USB port.
I have just purchased a Yamaha 01x which I want to use exclusively as a control surface for Logic Studio, and I have an existing Yamaha Motif which I slave to Logic.
I only have one firewire port on my imac, taken up by my MOTU 896 mk3, and so I'm not using the 01x MLAN connection, but hoping to use the midi cables via an interface....my Motif connects via USB.

Yes you can try to patch the midi cables to any USB midi interface and use the Yamaha as control surface but then I doubt it will be recognized as Yamaha 01x control surface - it will work as any Generic Controller I guess...
PS. The Motu supplies two FireWire jacks so it can be daisy-chained with additional MOTU FireWire audio interfaces or other devices. Did you try to connect the Yamaha 01x this way?

How can I make my iPod sync automatically?

When I first got my iPod I chose for it NOT to sync automatically but I should have. I have no idea how to get back to those settings but want to change it so it syncs on it's own. I've read a few topics here and noticed stuff about Summary tabs but the thing is, I have nothing like that on mine, I have no setting options whatsoever. I tried registering my iPod on here to see if that would do something but the thing is, it asked for payment details but I don't want to pay for anything. I don't use the iTunes store to download my music, I transfer it from another downloading software.
So, my question is - how do I make my iPod sync automatically and how do I find these 'settings' that everybody else appears to have?

Slow iPod sync with network drive

I run a small network for my home/office (I am self employed) with about 4 PCs for me and my family.
We have 3 iPods in our family and we just use one PC to host iTunes, but because we have so much music, I have put the music on a network drive served from my file server (Windows Small Business Server - Windows Server 2003 based).
There's no problem with this setup, except one:
I've noticed that when iPods sync with iTunes, it takes a very long time, perhaps 5 times as long than when I had my music files on an external hard drive directly connected to the PC on which we run iTunes.
This is fustrating. My question is: is there anything that can be done about this ?
I can't really understand why this should be an issue. iTunes has, stored in the library files on my local PC, the details of all my music files. So when my iPod syncs, surely iTunes consults the iPod and consults what is in iTunes and figures out what should change - and then and only then should iTunes need to connect to the network drive to actually get any necessary files. Is my understanding wrong of what iTunes is doing when syncing an iPod ?
The issue is that even with no changes, sync-ing is an issue.
Any help on this gratefully received - have looked in this forum and other places, but haven't managed to trawl and info on my issue.

Having been given an iPod video 60Gig as a present, I am sometimes forced to use it.
Recently I tried - I downloaded and installed latest itunes 7.5 on the PC running Windows XP.
Built up the library of music - tried to do a sync. So slow I nearly hit the PC. The transfer rate would merely get 40 Meg on in 5 minutes (thats my estimate all I know is it never finished). I tried to leave it running for 3 hours and still not finished - the size of music to transfer was about 2400 songs.
I then tried to use Vista Home Basic - with itunes 7.5 - it wouldnt even recognize the ipod.
After a few days of giving up and banging my head against the wall I tried Linux too - but that was slow too.
I eventually went back to Vista and de-installed itunes 7.5 - found version 6.05 and installed it. It went through like clockwork (well as clockwork as can be it was magically fast but fast enough to fill half of the 60Gig).
I then had the magic idea - why not update to 7.5 from 6.05 and guess what - its slow again painfully slow.
Version 7.5 *****!

What happened to the iPod Sync Button in iTunes 7? Can I just not find it? I know I can right click on the iPod and hit synce, but I miss the simple button i could just click.

Nothing happened to it.
It is still there. Maybe it says apply now, not sure, but it is still there.
