Simple Library Import question

I have a simple question pertaining to importing. I am used to iPhoto where you import all pictures into your "Library" folder. However in Aperture I find that I can import into the "Library" (which in turn also puts the picture in a "Project") and also import directly into a Project which sometimes doesn't seem to include the pictures in the Library.
My confusion is what is the point of Library then if you can import into a project? (or have I done something wrong during an import?)
Thanks in advance!

An image is always in exactly one project. All the images in all projects are in the library. (Folders and albums are a little more complicated, holding pointers to images, not images.)
Highlighting "Library" in the projects panel doesn't show anything (usually). If you highlight the All Images blue Smart Album under Library, it will show all the images in all projects. If that doesn't seem to be the case, it's probably because you're filtering images. Select "Show All" in the search box at the upper right corner of the Browser. It's easy to forget this, and panic because all or most of your images seem to have disappeared.

  • Library/Import question

An inadvertent change must have been made to my Lightroom set up and I can't figure out how to change it back. It used to be that when I imported images to the program, they showed in a list in the library. I simply had to navigate to the labeled folder I wanted to work on. Now it shows the images in "Previous Import" and opens a tree in Folders... it shows the drive I have the folders on and I have to navigate through all of the folders to get where I want to go. What happened and how do I change it back? (Actually I don't care what happened, I just want to change it back!)
    Thanks so much!

    Figured out the problem... nevermind!

  • Simple file import question

I just installed Lr4 on my laptop.  When I plug in my Nikon D7000 and try to import photos, I just get a message "The following files could not be imported because they could not be read".  Then it lists the file names of the various files.  Message displays regardless if I try .NEF or .JPEG files.  The photos appear in the library module, so I know Lr is pulling them from the correct place (camera).  When I plug the camera into my desktop PC where I also have Lr installed, all works fine.  Help!

Sounds like a hardware problem, if the desktop reads things fine.

  • Library Syncing Question

OK I have two Macs and an iPad and an iPhone.
Here's what I currently do, using non-Aperture products:
    1) I transfer RAW+JPEG from my camera to my iPad.
    2) I use Image Capture to transfer the images from iPad into an "Unsorted" folder.
    3) I sort the pictures using Adobe Bridge, then organize them into folders, which are also organized into other folders, and so-on. They are done by main category such as "Events/Shows", "Work", "Trips", "Cats", "Friends", "House", "Landscape", "Macro", etc. ((The categories aren't perfect though and I started to realize I have a lot of pictures that fit multiple categories, hence why I want to start using an image management software like Aperture.))
    4) When I edit a file, I open the RAW into Photoshop CS5 or Olympus Studio and use that software to make a new .PSD or .TIF file, appending the file name with single letter codes that indicate what I have done to the file (+o for olympus studio, +a for adobe CS5, +s for sharpened, +h for hdr, +p for pano, +w for web resolution version,+f for flattened version of a multi-layer file, etc.). I also add a 1.1 or 1.2 to the filename if I make successive versions. Then I save it to the same folder that the original was saved in so that I don't have to go looking for it should I want to burn it to CD to take into the lab to get printed.
    5) I sync all my JPEGs only to the MacBook Pro, and keep the RAW+JPEG on the Mac Pro since it has 7 TB of storage and redundant backed up arrays. But I do most of my photo editing on the MacBook Pro, then sync the new edited versions back to the Mac Pro. I use ChronoSync to do the syncing.
Problem with my current method: I cannot sync to the iPad in an organized way nor add location information to my photos.
Here's what I'd like to do:
    1) On the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro, maintain a *referenced* Aperture library by adding referenced links into Aperture to all my existing files, which would stay where they currently are. ((I don't feel like giving up my folder organization scheme that I've been building up for 15 years, and which contains over 50,000 images.)) Then I would sync Aperture between the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro whenever I also sync the folders (any changes to one would become reflected in the other).
    2) When I would add JPEGs to the MacBook Pro's Aperture library via referenced links, then on the Mac Pro the referenced links would point at the copies of the files that are on *its* local hard drive. So in other words, the referenced links in the Aperture library *must* be something like: ~/Pictures/MyFolder/myimage001.jpg INSTEAD of something like: /MyHardDriveName/Users/MyUserName/Pictures/MyFolder/myimage001.jpg. If Aperture is able to use links that reference to the User directory, then syncing between the computers will go smoothly. Otherwise it won't work at all. So this step is critical. I'd like to know before I attempt this whether or not this will work.
    3) I will also want Aperture to automatically use a Spotlight search scope that I define to find files that have been moved. I organize my files by moving them around in folders; if something gets moved then I need Aperture to go look for it. It should keep a checksum for the key metadata of each file and the filename in its database so that it can intelligently search and automatically repair broken links using Spotlight. Or, failing that, it needs to allow me to manually tell it where I have moved files in the (somewhat rare) cases when I move them after adding them to Aperture.
    4) I want Aperture to let me use Adobe Photoshop CS5 or Olympus Studio to convert RAW to JPG, whenever I want, and automatically add any edited versions of the files that I manipulate back into its database. So in other words it would watch the folders that I have added images from, and if any new files appear there, then it would automatically add links to them to the Aperture database (like how Picasa does with its watch folders).
    5) I want to be able to download images from my camera's memory card to my iPad, then organize them into new Projects/Albums and rate them, etc., then sync those Projects/Albums into Aperture but have the files be placed in a folder I specify (not into the Aperture library!! arghh!!!).
    6) I also want to sync my Aperture library to my iPad using iTunes from my MacBook Pro. (I already started doing this on an experimental basis, but I noticed there is still no way to rate pictures on the iPad and I haven't tried making new albums from the iPad yet and syncing them back.)
I'm sure I'll think of some other requirements but those are the must-haves. Does anyone know if Aperture is capable of doing this, or is it not a professional application quite yet?
On point 3), perhaps it's possible to use AppleScripts to add files that are added to certain folders into Aperture instead of having Aperture do it upon launch? Anyone know? If so does anyone know of such scripts?
Are there any pros out there who actually let Aperture store your photos in its library? If so then how did you transition your existing large image library into Aperture? I don't think I have enough spare hard drive space to import my 1.5TB photo library into a new copy of it, plus all the frakking previews and everything else that Aperture generates. I guess I just fail to see why Aperture insists on using a Library instead of doing things in a Mac-like way (folders). It seems very strange and odd to me that Apple would have written a program that does not even obey the Macintosh user interface principles like having a standard open/save dialog box, file/folder interface, using the trash can to delete things, etc. Am I the only one who feels like they are starting to smoke something weird in Cupertino?
    - Mac Daddie

    1. There is no need to use Aperture in Managed Mode - where it stores the files in its own Library. Aperture is perfectly happy running in Referenced Mode - the files are stored where you prefer - and its an option in the import dialogue.
    2. It's not a photo editor or file browser. You seem to be confusing it with Bridge or somesuch. It's a Photo Manager -   database forcussed on processing the output of a shoot in a losslessly. That's why it doesn't use Open and Save dialogues and so on. The point of Aperture is that you import your Photos and store the files whereever, and get on with working on the Photos.
If you're very attached to your current workflow I would skip Aperture. An alternative workflow using Aperture would be much simpler. Import to Aperture (storing the files where you will) sort them in Aperture, process them in Aperture etc. No need to save as tiffs or psds - in fact, the only time you need to decide what to do with the product of your effort is when you export for some reason. You can create multiple versions (and append whatever codes you prefer to these versions and so on.) Photos you want to further edit, send to Photoshop or whatever you prefer. Though the very common  experience is that you will use these editors a lot less than you do now.
You can have multiple Libraries, export projects as Libraries to keep Libraries on two machines in sync and so on.
So, working with Aperture in your current workflow would only be adding unnecessary complexity to an already complex workflow. If you're prepared to negotiate on the workflow, you may find an easier way to get the same results with Aperture.

  • How to import questions into Captivate 4 from a delimited file

    I'm looking
a way to import questions from a delimited text file (or excel spreadsheet)
    into captivate.
All the questions are simple multiple choice, single answer, four selections per question.
I have hundreds - I'd hate to have to retype them all in one at a time.
    Thanks in advance
    -Joan

Does anyone know if this is a feature in Captivate 5.
Other things I would really like to see in Captivate 5.
Importing and Exporting the graded quiz/test content out of captivate into another
application/ form.  Such as xml, tab delimited, excel spreadsheet,
Adobe pdf, Word document or another format.  Our current content
developement systems allows us to (when publishing) do this.
1> exclude questions from the Published content
(exclude section questions, or final test content)
2> produce different test versions from question banks
3> Produce a PDF paper test for when we want to train in a classroom setting
4> Select which questions we want to produce
5> Import questions from a pre-defined format.  To note: when we do this the system also makes us define a unique interaction id so that the import will update existing questions.
I know this will NOT work for some of the more sophisticated questions, But for the simple Mulitple choice, true/false, fill in the blank.  etc..
THIS WOULD BE A GREAT FEATURE..
It would also be NICE TO HAVE THE abiliy to PROFILE versions of the SAME Course WITH OUT REPRODUCING / DUPLICATING / REPEATING THE  ENTIRE COURSE PRESENTATION.
    Such as
    "INSTRUCTOR TAUGHT TRAINING"
    "WEB TRAINING"
    "PAPER TEST A"
    "PAPER TEST B"
    ETC...
LASTLY: if we can not export the QUIZ content.  Can an excel spreadsheet LIKE INTERFACE be used to edit certain aspects of the questions.
Such as the InteractionId which is sent to the LMS ('cmi.interactions.0.id').  My developer team says it is real difficult and time consuming
to track down interactionIds and then maintain them in a perfect way.

How to get existing library imported to new itunes install, old library was not backed up or exported.  This occured due to Win 7 user profile was corrupt.

I know that in Mac OS X one can pick which library to use by holding down the option key while starting iTunes. What's the Windows equivalent?
    Press the Shift key.
WIll the fact that the music is now on another physical drive make a difference
    No.
I know the previous install is at least 7.0, but I have no idea about which point release.
Try checking the content of the iTunes Music Library.xml file.
Finally, what's the expected behaviour (or required procedure) with respect to reauthorization of this computer to use the same ITMS-purchased files?
You will be asked to reauthorize the computer.

  • MEGA180 Important Questions

I have my MEGA180 on order but I already have some important questions:
    1) This unit provides dual vga outputs. If I install my own AGP 8x card, will the VGA2 output still work? I read in the manual that installing an AGP card will disable VGA1 (default) but it doesn't say anything about the 2nd VGA output connector. I require 2 outputs since I will be connecting to an LCD and my HDTV monitor (using a VGA to Component Video Transcoder)
    2) Will there be performance hits by using the two vga outputs at the same time?
    3) The on-board video card doesn't have any video memory. It will use your existing DDR memory. I will have 512Meg Dual Channel Memory. What kind of performance I can expect from the built-in video card (NVidia NForce Crush18) compared to other AGP cards on the market?
    Thanks for your help!
    Sly

Though I can not provide you with answers specific to the Mega 180, I can give you some more info.
    1) No. As soon as you install an AGP card, the onboard video will be fully disabled from within the BIOS. This is an nForce2 chipset setting. So make sure to get an AGP card with 2xVGA (as most cards have nowadays).
    2) No or not much. Using an nForce2 MoBo myself I haven't encountered performance loss using both VGA outputs.
    3) There's no way to compare the onboard video to an AGP card. AGP cards will have a far out better perfomance then the onboard video. But compared to other onboard video solutions around, like Xtreme Graphics, the nForce solution is far better and has far better performance.
It all depends on what you will be doing with the MegaPC. If you're a gamer, get an AGP card. If you want to use it as an HTPC, keep with the onboard nForce2 solution. There's no need for extra here since the nForce2 chipset is great. Onboard sound from this chipset is also great. Try it out before spending $ on an AGP card you don't need.
    Hope this helped a bit.

  • E-Recruiting important questions

I'm implementing the E-Recruiting and I have two important questions for this Project:
1 - The business want to capture mobility (willingness to relocate / travel) at the time of position application. Is there a standard field for store this information?
2 - Recruitment would like to be informed about a critical process, in others words, the requisition doesnu2019t compete with other priorities. How can I handle this situation?
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Sivani

    Hi Sivani,
Questionnaire answers are stored in IT5141.  They are visible to the Recruiters when viewing the Candidates and can be used in rankings.  You can also decide for which positions this questionnaire would be required and which not.
Do not see a standard field to create a priority when creating a Requisition.  We added many fields, such as "eligibility for employee referral", so it can be added.  However, letting managers set the priorities could be a problem with each manager thinking his/her opening is most important.

  • Server Specs for a 11.1.1.3 Install Important questions.

I've put together some specifications for a Development Server & Production Server, any comments appreciated. I hope this post acts as a good reference sample for anybody else out there looking to implement a Hyperion Planning.
    Client Tier: (2 developers)
    Windows
    8 GB RAM
    Dual Core Processor
Components: EAS client, Smart View, Excel Add-in
    Web Tier:
    HTTP Web and J2EE Servers:
Windows + (not sure which version would be best here, any ideas appreciated)+
    Processor: 4 x 3 GHZ, 64 bit
    RAM: 8GB
    Hard Drive: 32 GB
Components: Foundation: HSS, Workspace, Planning, Web Applications: EAS, Financial Reporting, Web Analysis, Planning,
    Services Tier:
    Server1:
    Windows (2003 SP1, R2)
    Processor: 4 x 3 GHZ 64 bit
    RAM: 16 GB
    Disk: 32GB
    Components: Essbase Server 64 bit
    Server2:
    Windows (2003, SP1 R2)
    Processor: 2 x3 Ghz
    RAM: 8GB
    Hard Drive: 32GB
Components: Reporting & analysis, Financial Reporting Print Services, ODI
    Server 3:
    Windows (2003, SP1 R2)
    Processor: 2 x3 Ghz 64 bit
    RAM: 8GB
    Hard Drive: 32GB
    Components: FDM
    Database Tier:
    4 x 3 GHZ - 8 GB RAM
    DISK: 100GB RDBMS
    200GB Essbase Storage
The specifications will be similar for the production for abotu 25 - 30 users (10 concurrent), with RAM being a little bumped up.
One important question: I might need guidance on installing 32 bit planning or FDM on the 64 bit server - any known issues with this? Also any known issues with 64 bit Essbase working with 32 bit Planning?
Edited by: EssbaseApprentice on Sep 30, 2010 10:04 AM

obviously its hard to comment on whether it is the perfect spec for your environment, it looks alright to me, it is not under spec.
For the web tier as you are running reporting and analysis and the other machines are windows based personally I would stick with windows 2003.
Is there any reason why you have one machine dedicated just to FDM, seems a bit of an overkill just for one product, it may be worth combining services server 2 with FDM, just a suggestion though

  • Important Questions to ask when developing in Workflow

    Hello All,
      I have two questions.
I am not a Workflow developer, but I've been asked to find out information about creating a Workflow process.
Here is what <b>I</b> need to know: What are important questions to ask the end-user when creating a workflow. What needs to be taken into consideration?
Here is an example of the kind of thing we need to do:
Send an email on a weekly basis to different Project Managers a Summary of Project Charges = (maybe CN41?)
Each Project Manager will have different requirements, so  I guess one question will be: "What info do you want from this report?". What else do I need to know?
My second question is this: I should be able to output this as an Excel, correct? How much can I customize this? I haven't done much SAP -> Excel work. Only when I go to System -> List -> Save -> Local File ->Spreadsheet.
    Thanks for the help.
    Don Fields

    Hello Don!
WF is quite a complex topic and someone could write a book to answer your questions - actually there is already a good book available -> check: Practical Workflow for SAP
    http://www.sap-press.com/product.cfm?account=&product=H950
Looking at your example their might not even be a need for a workflow but rather a job that runs periodically to send the required information via email to project managers.
Workflow is mostly used if user actions are required e.g. confirm, approve, reject a request or notifications need to be sent to someone after an event or user action occured.
Check this link for getting more information on how to download data to excel:
