Simple manual file rearrangement in Finder

I've been using my iMac for almost 2 weeks now and stumbled upon a problem of some sort:
I am unable to manually drag and drop my photos inside the Finder to rearrange their order.
I dont need all the other automated sorting options. All i need is to be able go in the photos folder using icon view, click on a photo (any file) and drag it where i want it to be.
I know i can just use the view options to turn any sorting off, but then the files tend to get scattered all over the place. I need them to be nicely gritted AND manually movable/swapable.
I know this problem exists on Windows 7 and is not fixed yet.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes, I do understand what you mean. And i do get the same results as you when using the "Snap to Grid" settings, but that's not what i need.
An example. Let's imagine a folder with 3 .jpg files. Named 1.jpg, 2.jpg and 3.jpg. All in that order. With no grid spaces empty between them. The folder is using the "snap to grid" setting and all the icons are aligned perfectly and all is well. But now i want to change the file order like this: 1.jpg, 3.jpg, 2.jpg. The easiest way to do that is to do these 3 steps:
1) Click on 3.jpg and hold
2) Drag the file 3.jpg inbetween 1.jpg and 2.jpg
3) Drop the file
What should happen: the file 2.jpg should automatically slide a bit to the grid place on the right and make way for the 3.jpg, thus making effectively the order 1.jpg, 3.jpg, 2.jpg.
What is happening and what i want to get solved: i click, i drag and when i drop the file it slides back the way it came from, with no order changed whatsoever.
I hope i was clear enough. This is very important for me and i would really hate to find out, that on Mac this basic file sorting thing is not implemented.

  • Can I rearrange the Finder Sidebar items?

Is it possible to rearrange the Finder Sidebar items? I would like to get the "10.6" order: Devices>Network>Places

I find this extremely annoying as well. Of course you can drag any volume to the favorites list - BUT - if you unmount them, they do NOT reappear there when they are re-mounted. You have to manually add them back again.
Also, I work with a lot of volumes that require frequent mounting and un-mounting. It's a time waster to try and keep them in the favorites list so I've given up.
Constantly having to scroll DOWN to get to the bottom of the list is ridiculous. So combine that with the fact that there are NO MORE COLORED icons in the sidebar. Talk about ***-backward-going-in-the-wrong-direction-mentality.... So with my poor eyesight, I find basic navigation within the Finder becoming more and more of a strain.
Seems like Apple is going out of their way making things MORE difficult for the Pro user as they try to simplify things for "switchers" and for the "rest of us...".
While I'm on a roll, I find that every time there is a big issue from us users about something that has been changed in the OS with an update, more and more of the solutions are from power users that post up terminal commands to rectify those issues, or try to direct people on how to edit .plist files. These people are certainly trying to help but working in the terminal is VERY risky business for the average user.
Configurability from the Finder is slowly going away with every new OS incarnation, forcing average users to dig deeper into areas they should NOT have to be dealing with. You see the problem here?
And lastly, I'm not hater. Far from it. I've been a loyal customer for 20 years which is why it's so sad and frustrating to me.
It's just that I hate to watch this slow yet steady progression into the pale grey realms of un-configurability...

  • How do I remove an old file from the Finder Favorites list?

    Good Afternoon.
I have a shiney new MBPro with 10.7.1.
On my old machine running Snow Leopard, I had two .xls files I used often that I had dragged to the left side into the favorites. The truth is, I hadn't used them in months, but hadn't bothered to remove them. Then about ten days ago, the Bad Thing happened, and I had to replace my laptop rather suddenly. The nice folks at the Apple store transferred all the data and I was off an running in just a few hours.
Now, I thought to myself, I should remove those two files since I don't use them any more. But how?
If I click on them nothing happens. If I right-click on them, nothing happens. I can't drag them out because they don't drag and they aren't listed on the list of favorites that can be toggled on and off in preferences.
I checked. The files did still exist but deleting them didn't remove their names from the favorites list.
Any suggestions as to how to remove these two .xls files from the Finder's Favorites list?
    Thanks. A picture is below.

The msot amazing person ,just posted an answer to my other question which worked here too.
    Three cheers for Kappy!
Just hold down the CMD key and drag them off. How simple is that?? They didn't klnow this at the Genius bar when I asked this morning. I am amazed.
I wish I knew how to send Kappy cookies.

I have been having the most difficult times with the use of iPhoto Booth for recording movie files of church services. It seems if I make a rename on the files, for some odd reason, I cannot find it in any of my Files Folders in Finder. I need to know is there a more simple way to retrieve movie files thru iPhoto Booth or is there something I may can download to fix this issue? Also, is there a way the videos can be flipped around to not a mirror image, but to a reverse camera? Please anyone who recognizes this problem, contact me ASAP. Thank you for your support!

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

I simply created a project containing some classes whish use java mail.
Then I modified the project creating, in the deployment wizard, a "Dependency Analysis" filegroup adding all my classes as well as libraries.
I uncheck the "Include Manifest" chek otherwise I would run into different problems (well documented in the forum).
The jar file is created but when I run the application I get the Security error.
If I remove java mail libraries (activation and java mail)from the list of used libraries and I add it to classpath it works fine.
I suspect the problem could be in Manifes merging.

  • Renameing files - iTunes cannot find files?

I recently got a new computer and forgot to send all of the music on my old one to this one - so i imported them from my iPod. When it imported them, it gave them file names such as "APKF" and "NXVX", so if i delete and file and then want it back - i have to go through all of the files until i find the one i'm looking for. A simple solution to this would be to rename the files with their correct artist name and song,... but when i do this iTunes cannot find the files when i go to play the songs ... it also does this if i simply just move a song from one folder to another ... help?
    Thank you!!!

I'm gonna keep them as their original four letter name and then just create a key in Notepad were it links the artist to the song by that four letter name. And them inport them one by one and enter their keys into a notepad...
It'll take a long time, but after i do it this one time i can just add and delete songs from the notepad.
    like this:
    Cage the Elephant:
    Back Against the Wall: WTHK
Ain't no rest for the wicked: TYRE
thank you soooo much for your help, but i'm a neat freak so i'm gonna do this. you don't know of somekind of software were you can save some kind of data? like a non-trial version of Windows Office Excel?

  • What is file locking in Finder?

    Hi
I am trying to find out what file locking in Finder is and how it is different from file permissions.
I cannot find any special attribute in xattr nor ls -l for locked files.
The only piece of documentation I have found is the above link. I would appreciate a link to some developer.apple description or a good explanation of this feature.

    From the SetFile manual page:
SETFILE(1) BSD General Commands Manual SETFILE(1)
    NAME
/usr/bin/SetFile -- set attributes of files and directories
    SYNOPSIS
    /usr/bin/SetFile [-P] [-a attributes] [-c creator] [-d date] [-m date]
    [-t type] file ...
    DESCRIPTION
/usr/bin/SetFile is a tool to set the file attributes on files in an HFS+
directory. It attempts to be similar to the setfile command in MPW. It
can apply rules to more than one file with the options applying to all
    files listed.
    Flags:
-P Acts on a symlink file instead on the file the symlink resolves to.
-a attributes Sets the file attributes bits where attributes is a string
of case sensitive letters. Each letter corresponds to a
file attribute: an uppercase letter indicates that the
attribute bit is set (1), a lowercase letter indicates
that it is not (0). Note: attributes not specified remain
    unchanged.

Hello, did you read the answers?
You have to put j2ee.jar or servlet-api.jar in your classpath. Those JAR files are included in the Java EE package somewhere. Remove the QTJava.zip junk from the classpath.
If you don't know what the classpath is and how to set it, read this:
    Setting the class path
    How Classes are Found
And I'll repeat what the others say: if you are very new to Java, then Java EE will probably be way over your head. First learn the language and the standard API. If you understand that well, start with Java EE. Or do you already know what servlets are, and that you need a servlet container to run them, and how to deploy them etc.?

  • How do I find a photo file in the Finder + future migration question

Being a recent Mac convert, I am just getting used to the 'complete control' approach to photo management that iPhoto has. I'm used to knowing where my photos physically reside on my computer - this is useful for doing things like uploading photos to a website for example. How do I actually find a particular photo in the Finder (or even give photo files recognisable names, as opposed to whatever automated naming system iPhoto uses)?
A followup question to this is, what happens if I ever want to migrate my photos out of iPhoto one day to another application or even back to a PC (God forbid - just my paranoia about being forced to use a particular system forever kicking in here!) - is there a way to do this, and keep photo modifications etc? Or once I start using iPhoto, have I made my decision for life??
My apologies if this has been asked before, I couldn't find anything in the forum when searching.

    poddster
I hope you've a notebook and pen, but you've asked a lot of questions:
I'm used to knowing where my photos physically reside on my computer
You photos are stored in the iPhoto Library at your Pictures Folder. This is a Unix style Package Folder that very easy to see inside: right click on it and choose show package contents. A finder window opens with the library exposed.
Here's how the library is laid out:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
iPhoto always preserves the original file, all operations are carried out on a copy.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
And here's a warning: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
this is useful for doing things like uploading photos to a website for example
No it's not. Don't surf the iPhoto Library. The idea with iPhoto is that you do everything via the iPhoto Window or media browsers:
So, to access pics use one (or more) of the following:
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
iPhot doesn't name the files, those names are given by your camera. You can add titles in iPhoto and if you use the File -> Export command there's a facility there to name the resulting file (it'll be a copy - remember what I said about all operation being done on a copy...) with the title.
Do not rename files in iPhoto, That comes under the heading of making changes in the iPhoto Library Folder and alters the path to the files. If you do, iPhoto will lose track of the file. But the truth is there's simply no need to. However, you can rename the files before importing them if you like.
Migrating is really easy. You've seen the layout of the Library above. The originals are all there, in the originals folder, the Modified versions in their folder. If you want to have only the most recent versions of pics, then export them from iPhoto to a folder on the desktop.
By all means post back if you need more.
    Regards
    TD

  • Is there a way to automatically add the filename in the page header when batch printing text files directly from finder?

hello, i have 80 text files (docx). the finder preview works great and i can open them in pages.

  • How can I display file size in Finder

    Hi folks,
I am trying to figure out where 40GB of data is hiding. I would like to see file sizes in the Finder window associated with my folders in Mountain Lion 10.8.2..  I'm having, what seems to me, a strange problem. When I 'Get Info' on my Hard Drive, the disc space left is only 40GB out of 120GB (ie used being 80GB). My confusion is that when I painstakingly go through the files, I can only account for 48 GB with 'Get Info' on each folder. This is a rather combersome process and I am hoping there is a work around for viewing the file sizes within Finder and not having to open 'Get Info' on each and every folder like I have been.
    I have a MacAir 13 inch 2011
    Thanks!

Thanks for your time and suggestions, dominic23.
I looked through both links and sadly, none of these suggestions have worked. I have tried many on my own since posting trying to figure out why the volume is being doubled on my hard drive. I've deleted log files, and done a sweep with Onyx to no avail. Strangely, the option of seeing the volumes under 'About this Mac' and 'System' does not have a listing for storage. Weird. I am the only user/administrator on this computer and I don't have shared files.
    I'm just stumped.

  • Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?

Message title says it: Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?
I can't find anything in the Knowledge Base that says these two options no longer work or still do.
I do not have a system capable of running Lion, but I need to know the answer nonetheless.

Gee, I don't know: "paste attachments mail Lion"? ;-)
One further question, if I may: in Panther (which is where I've aggregated nearly 7 years of mail), if you copy more than one file in the Finder, switch to Mail, and paste the files into a new message, only the file names paste in. If you copy one file and paste it into a Mail message, you get the file, not just the name. Is that still true, or has that (IMHO) bug been fixed since 10.3.9?
