Simple networking question

I need help logging into my ethernet hub wired G4 Tower from a wireless Powerbook. Here is the setup - Cable modem goes into wireless router --> pushes internet signal throught the house for a Dell notebook and my Powerbook --> ethernet goes out of wireless router to a 4 port hub that powers a printer and my G4 Tower. I would like to access files on the hardwired Tower remotely from my Powerbook. Can this be set up in file sharing or what type of configuration is necessary to make this work? Also... I have a printer downstairs (I would like to print to from all 3 CPU's) what's needed to make this happen.

I would like to access files on the hardwired Tower remotely from my Powerbook. Can this be set up in file sharing...
Yes, open the Sharing preference pane on the Tower and enable Personal File Sharing.

  • Very simple network question

    Forgive my stupidity asking this question...
    I have an iBook G4 and two Windows PCs (one W2K, one XP) all happily sharing a wi-fi network using Airport Express.
    I am about to dash out to the shops to buy a USB printer so that we can all print wirelessly, using iFelix's fab website for guidance. My incredibly dumb question is this: do I need to establish any kind of network before embarking on the printer-sharing project, or, by the very fact that we are all sharing a wi-fi network, are we already three "networked" computers??
    I don't want to share any files between the computers, just a printer. Is there anything I need to do beforehand to create a network, or are we already one??
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Window XP, Windows 2000, AirPort Express

    Sanhodo: there are reports of problems with windows sharing a printer to a wireless iBook. You should read iFelix guide to wireless printing (run a google search), it will shed some light on the subject.
    JFYI, the setup of Claudine is completely different from yours, since she will connect the printer to THE ROUTER, not to a computer --which is your case-- and therefore she will avoid the problems of windows printer sharing...

  • Probably a simple networking question (newbie here)

    Hi everyone,
    When I installed Solaris 10 inside of a VMWare Workstation vm, I got to the portion of the network configuration where it asked about LDAP or DNS or NFS, and I chose "None" because my setup is not a member of a domain. Now, when I go online, I have no Internet connection.
    I have the interface listed in ifconfig -a and it has an IP address of 192.168.0.4 issued by DHCP. Everything is right, except there is no Default Gateway listed, nor does it have my DNS servers listed.
    How would I go about setting these in Solaris? I'm not entirely familiar with vi or edit, so a step-by-step will be nice.
    I should note, that I'm able to access my Windows Workgroup computer (the physical host) and copy files from it. I just don't have any Internet access. Also, the IP for my physical computer (the Windows share) is my DNS IP, although that shouldn't matter.
    Thank you for any help you can provide.
    Patrick.

    First of all, in /etc/hosts file ;
    the first line indicates loopback address(IP) & the second line indicates the IP of the your machine followed by the hostname ( which is "unknown in your case as you have not assigned any hostname). The commented line in second line tells that , the IP is assigned by a dhcp-server.
    you can assign router IP in a file called "/etc/defaultrouter".you only have to give the IP address of the router in this file.To make this as default router address for you system , you have reboot the system.
    You can change your hostname from "unknown" by issuing this command :
    #setuname -n XYZ
    (where XYZ is the new hostname)
    you can also check the changed hostname by doing this ;
    #uname -n

  • Hey Everyone...  I have a networking Question...

    Ok well its more then just one networking question...
    I'm working on a game engine (2d) and for the time being it just has two blocks in a 600 by 480 area, both controled by user input on a single comp. I would like to change this so that i can have the blocks be controled by sepeart computers. I know this is possible I just dont know how, any help would be great.
    My experience with Java is some what limited i've only been programing for the past 6 months and i've never messed with any network code before.
    Any and all help would be great
    Thanks
    Mike

    Boy, that other poster was really helpful, yes? :-P
    What you probably want to do is open a "socket" between one computer and the other. (TCP is probably the easiest/best for your application, as opposed to UDP). This is actually pretty simple, and basically consists of:
    (this client/server arrangement is the easiest. Peer-to-peer would work too, but is generally more complex.)
    1. Computer A decides to become the server and opens a java.net.ServerSocket on port 1234.
    2. Computer B opens a java.net.Socket to computer A's port 1234.
    3. Computer A accepts the connection and gets a java.net.Socket from the ServerSocket.
    4. Now anything computer A writes to the Socket is recieved by computer B, and vice-versa. This is a TCP connection and is stream-based, so it should be familiar if you've done any Java I/O before; in face, you can use java.io.Reader's and Writers, and so on with your Socket.
    See http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/sockets/ for a good introduction to sockets.

  • Powerline Adapters: Comtrend Vs Simpler Networks

    I am wondering which of the powerline adapter types is better:
    I am currently using a pair of black Comtrend adapters with plug socket pass-thru (PowerGrid 9020, P/N 724306-026),
    but BT have just sent me a pair of white and slightly smaller Simpler Networks adapters (Model: HP200PT64BT, Item 061114).
    Are the newer Simpler Networks adapters superior?
    I am mainly concerned about Throughput, Power Consumption and the Standard supported.

    Powerline adaptors very much depend on your home wiring. Like most electrical equipment, you will always get performance differences where one will perform better than others in certain scenarios, but in other situations a different one will perform better.
    ADSL routers are a perfect example of this. I've seen sometimes a 2meg sync difference across different routers using the same line, filters and setup. I use Devolo powerline adaptors and have only good things to say about them

  • Share files in ibook - networking question

    Hello, I have a networking question.
    I have a brand spakin' new 13' MacBook Pro and an older 14' iBook G4 (with a broken airport wireless card).
    My internet is set up so that I have the modem connected to a "wired" ethernet hub, then to an airport express. This way I have wireless for my new MacBook Pro, and I can connect my old iBook to the internet with a ethernet cable.
    Herein lies my question: I want to access all my files on my ibook from my MacBook Pro. I've tried the file sharing and etc on system preferences, but for some reason it still doesn't work. I believe its because they are on different networks? (one wireless, one wired?)
    Any ideas to make my ibook a simple file server.

    Try repairing disk permissions.
    *"The external HD has two partitions, one is a backup of the ibook, and the other has mixed media. When I access my ibook over the network, Only the backup partition appears, and not the mixed media partition. "* Try repairing permissions but not sure if that's going to work. Can't hurt to try.
    Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
    Also, your profile indicates you are running 10.4.3. If that is the case, you might want to run Software Updates (from the Apple Menu , then click Software Updates.

  • 4 Simple Flash Questions that Are Stumping Me!

    What is the Frame Rate for Web Animations
    Q1. I am making an animation which will be played on the web. What is the default frame rate (fps) of Flash CS5? And what is the frame rate of for web?
    Q2. My animation needs to be 30 seconds long. So at 15 fps that would mean I need to use 600 frames in Flash?
    How Do I Mask everything so all I see is the Content on the Stage?
    I have a wide image that extends past my movies stage size so when I preview my movie the image is visible. How do I mask out anything that extends past my movies window size? I believe I can create a layer named "mask" and place it above all other layers, but I forget how to make the mask. Any help is appreciated.
    How to Fade a Graphic
    I have a graphic element (some type) and I want it to fade from 0% to 100%. In older versions of Flash I could just select the symbol and then set it's alpha value to 0%, move a few keyframes and then set the alpha to 100%. Voila! but now it doesn't seem to work that way. How can I do this in CS5?

    Ned, it says 24 fps which means there is 24 frames per second so each 24 frames is 1 second.

    1 You can create your character as a movieclip and copy/paste that movieclip from one file to another. 2. One way to create a movieclip is to copy all the frame of the animation's timeline (select them all, right click the selection, choose Copy Frames), then create a new movieclip symbol (Insert -> New Symbol...etc) right click on its only keyframe and chhose Paste Frames.  THat will put all the layers and frames you copied into the movieclip The only way to come close to being certain about the timing of you animation is to use code to keep track of the time, something like getTimer()..  The frame rate that a file plays at is not a reliable means of dictating the time it takes due to a variety of factors which include the amount of content you are trying to process and performance limits of the user's machine.

  • Simple performance question

    Simple performance question. the simplest way possible, assume
    I have a int[][][][][] matrix, and a boolean add. The array is several dimensions long.
    When add is true, I must add a constant value to each element in the array.
    When add is false, I must subtract a constant value to each element in the array.
    Assume this is very hot code, i.e. it is called very often. How expensive is the condition checking? I present the two scenarios.
    private void process(){
    for (int i=0;i<dimension1;i++)
    for (int ii=0;ii<dimension1;ii++)
      for (int iii=0;iii<dimension1;iii++)
        for (int iiii=0;iiii<dimension1;iiii++)
             if (add)
             matrix[i][ii][iii][...]  += constant;
             else
             matrix[i][ii][iii][...]  -= constant;
    private void process(){
      if (add)
    for (int i=0;i<dimension1;i++)
    for (int ii=0;ii<dimension1;ii++)
      for (int iii=0;iii<dimension1;iii++)
        for (int iiii=0;iiii<dimension1;iiii++)
             matrix[i][ii][iii][...]  += constant;
    else
    for (int i=0;i<dimension1;i++)
    for (int ii=0;ii<dimension1;ii++)
      for (int iii=0;iii<dimension1;iii++)
        for (int iiii=0;iiii<dimension1;iiii++)
           matrix[i][ii][iii][...]  -= constant;
    }Is the second scenario worth a significant performance boost? Without understanding how the compilers generates executable code, it seems that in the first case, n^d conditions are checked, whereas in the second, only 1. It is however, less elegant, but I am willing to do it for a significant improvement.

    erjoalgo wrote:
    I guess my real question is, will the compiler optimize the condition check out when it realizes the boolean value will not change through these iterations, and if it does not, is it worth doing that micro optimization?Almost certainly not; the main reason being that
    matrix[i][ii][iii][...]  +/-= constantis liable to take many times longer than the condition check, and you can't avoid it. That said, Mel's suggestion is probably the best.
    but I will follow amickr advice and not worry about it.Good idea. Saves you getting flamed with all the quotes about premature optimization.

  • Does LabVIEW support the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)?

    I looked at LabVIEW 2014 online help for some info on SNMP.
    A problem was posted in 1996 and updated in 2008.
    Does LabVIEW Support the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)?
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/4CD3625A939A77DE852564050047D3BD
    This was addressed to LabVIEW version 4.
    What version are we up to now?
    Version 14?
    One solution offered was to get the SNMP VI from Viodia.
    Why should I have to spend another $1,000 for a VI from Viodia after spending $5,000 for LabVIEW Professional?
    Come on National Instruments, offer up SNMP to go with your professional package.
    There seems to be a lot of chatter about SNMP on the forums.
    I’m sure a lot of customers would be happy to have an official LabVIEW VI for SNMP.

    I find it unreasonable to expect that LabVIEW supports out of the box every network protocol that has ever been invented under the sun. You may find SNMP to be the most important protocol on the world but for most programmers it is a niche protocol that they may have heard of but never will happen to come across in their applications. It's in fact pretty low level for a very specific purpose of managing network connected resources.
    On the other hand it is not rocket science either so can be implemented by someone with enough determination on top of the native network interface functions in LabVIEW. Is it a lot of work? Yes, you bet! Is it worth 1000 bucks! If you really need it and your own work hours cost anything more than a few cents per hour, most probably too! If you can live with an implementation that is supporting many but not all features of SNMP, the link on LAVAG is a very good and nice one.

  • A few simple Logic questions...please help.

    I have a few probably simple Logic questions, that are nonetheless frustrating me, wondering if someone could help me out.
    1. I run Logic 8, all of the sounds that came with logic seem to work except organ sounds. I can't trigger any organ sounds (MIDI) on Logic, they won't play. I have a Yamaha Motif as my midi controller.
    Any idea why?
    2. I've starting running into a situation where I will record a MIDI track, the notes are recorded but they won't playback. The only track effected is the one that was just recorded. All other midi tracks playback.
    I have to cut the track, usually go out of Logic and back in, re record for it to playback properly. Any idea why this may be happening?
    3. How important is it to update to Logic 9. Are there any disadvantages down the road if I don't upgrade. If I purchase the $200 upgrade, do I get a package of discs and material, or it just a web download.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • Simpler networks powerline adapters

    I am trying to add another Simpler Networks powerline adapter to the two I already have. I have followed the manufacturer's intructions and all is fine until I try to link them. Ipress the link button for 2 secs on the one already on the network but the power light doesn't flash. It is the same on the new adapter and so they don't link.
    Does anyone know what I am doing wrong.
    Thanks
    Solved!

    Hi emilio and welcome
    Are you using BT's help page to configure the extra adapter?
    I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but BT state that it doesn't matter which plug you use, but on the Simpler Networks help page it states you need to use the secondary adapter to connect the third one and so on. So can you try your other adapter and see if this one works.

  • Simple Network Streams - Example VIs

    In the example VI: Simple Network Streams - Host.vi the receive loop has a choice two timers: 10 and 20 milliseconds.  In addition the Read Single Element from Stream VI has a timeout of 100 milliseconds connected to it.
    In Simple Network Streams - Target.vi the receive loop has no timer, but the Read Single Element from Stream VI has a timeout of 1000 milliseconds connected.
    How can the target receive loop work without a timer?  What is the purpose of the 100 millisecond timeout of the Host receive loop if the loop has a timer of at most 10 milliseconds?  I have this example working on my cRIO-9030, but I don't understand it.  I think this gets down to my lack of understanding of the timeout function of reads and writes for streams and FIFOs.  Does the VI sleep until just before the timeout to check for data, or does it hog the processor the entire time looking for data?  It doesn't seem to be the latter since the processors on the target are only partially occupied in this example.

    First of all, where is this example?  You didn't post the code, and I didn't find it in the LabVIEW Examples, so it's difficult to explain "invisible" code.
    However, "sight-unseen", I may be able to explain some of your issues.  If you think about Network Streams as a Producer/Consumer pattern "across the network", the Consumer (the receive loop) might not need a timer, as it is being "driven" (and hence "timed") by the Producer sending data to it.  It probably should have a time-out just in case the Consumer just stops sending (say, it exits).
    Functions such as dequeues and receives "block" and don't do anything if they have no input.  Recall that LabVIEW uses data flow, and can have multiple parallel processes (loops) running at the same time.  When a function blocks, the code section (let's call it a "loop") containing the function stops using CPU cycles, allowing the other parallel loops to use the time.  This lets processes run "at their own speed" as long as they are sufficiently "decoupled" by being placed in parallel loops.  When there is no data, the loop essentially "waits", and lets all the other loops use the time instead.
