Simple noise reduction technic for hard drives

For those of you who are fussy about the noise a HD makes, as I am, a simple solution to reduce or even eliminate it is to stick a small piece of putty on the thin metal cover of the HD. That cover tends to act as a sounding board for the "white noise" that is generated by the moving air inside. A piece of putty about the size and shape of a nickel or quarter placed about where the center of the platters underneath would be can pretty much kill that noise. The thin metal piece can no longer resonate or vibrate at any frequency to speak of.
I use a black putty designed as a weather sealant. It is very sticky, like tape, and will not fall off. Plumbers putty will fall off in time I am sure.

Oh sure. You just have to keep in mind who owns the machine and what its purpose is.
In my case I own it and its purpose is for my enjoyment. For another person they may only be using it (company owned for instance) and/or it may be more utilitarian rather than recreational.

HP Simple Save 2 TB External Hard Drive (3.5-inch, USB 2.0) Broken HELP!

OK so I've searched around for a solution to my problem but have found no answer so I'm trying here.
I've had my HP Simple Save 2 TB External Hard Drive for a few of years now, it's served me great, I used it for storing all my photos but the usb connector has snapped off from the small CD drive inside the casing.
This has simply been through use, it was working fine, not wobbly or mistreated in any way, it must have just came to the end of it's life and now I can't hook it up to my computer to get the photos, I'm desperate to get them back, wedding photos, birthdays etc most of you must know how I'm feeling.
So I looked up a few solutions, one was to buy a USB-to-IDE/SATA adapter and use that to connect to the computer, well it works as far as recognising that a device is connected but won't load the files or folders to view.
As I've looked around apparently the small CD drive that's inside the case has software that my computer automatically loads? Now this is where I'm lost, how do I manage to get this to work?
I'm almost at my wits end, as far as looking every single day on Amazon and eBay to buy a new one to transfer the CD drive onto the broken one to load it up and get my photos back, IF that would even work, I'm not sure.

In case anyone it´s interested I restore the autorun.inf into the drive and the problem was that I put all the toshiba software into one folder to be more organized. As soon as I place it back again outside the folder (in the root of the hard drive). It grab the canvio image.

Recomendations for Hard Drive Configurations

I bought a rather basic computer a couple months ago to learn Premier on because I did not have the cash for the NLE machine I really wanted with the expectation I would upgrade it as needed. I knew when I started the 250gb hard drive free space would diminish but I did not think it would happen so quickly. Stock footage and completed projects have depleted my 250gb hard drive free space to 17gb and the hard drive is overdue for an upgrade already.
Any suggestions for hard drive specs and set up configurations that will compliment production with CS3 would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I'd keep the 250GB with System & Programs. It is over-sized for that purpose, but I'm not one who enjoys uninstalling and re-installing either their OS, or their programs. If you've got it set up that way already, you do not have to do a mirror/image/Ghost and hope that you get everything over to the new drive. Chalk this up to my laziness. You can also use some of this space for seldom used Assets, like SFX, or music, that you want to keep handy, but will not be accessing that often. I do this on one storage HDD, and then copy over these Assets to the Project, as they are used, on the big, fast Media HDD, when needed.
Add 2 new HDDs, if you have the controller connections. You will be limited, with this choice, to what controller you have in your system. Right now, the 750GB units are selling at some low prices, as the 1TBs are really coming on line. Two 500GBs would be cheaper, still.
If you have an open PCI/PCIe slot, you could get a speed boost by adding a good SATA II controller card and going that route with the HDDs. The SATA's are running a bit more expensive, than ATA-100/ATA-300s, but you will get a little I/O boost.
There are several good threads already, on how best to use your new HDDs with PP. The ideas may vary a bit, but the folk responding are stating how they find it best to configure Scratch Disks, etc., for their particular workflow. I'd search these forums (do not exclude the PP2 forum in your search, even though you have CS3).
Last considerations will be the cooling of your case and the capability of your power supply. Within *practical* terms, you cannot run your system too cool, and can never have too beefy a PS. If you have minimal cooling, look for more efficient fans, or more fans. If your case is close to you, and you edit with the speakers, quiet cooling will be a benefit. Do check the output from your PS, to make sure it can handle additional HDDs, or you may have to upgrade that, as well. When I'm commissioning a new system, I go with the most powerful and coolest (I'm talking thermal here, not flashing LEDs) PS, that I can get. If I can get it up to about 2.5x my immediate needs, I know that I can add "stuff," and not have to worry. Overheating systems and inadequate PS's are a big reason for system crashes, especially while rendering.

Under no circumstances should you try deleting files outside of your Home folder.

Fire Wire 800 for Hard Drive - not work

I have a FW hub for FW 400.
Recently added new Formac Hard drive. When connected with FW 400 via the hub into the back of my G5 - works ok.
When I plug the FW 800 cable (that it came with) direct out of the other port on Hard Drive to the 800 port on the back of my mac - nothing.
What am I doing wrong?

Go direct to the FW800 port on your G5.
Also, you can't get FW800 performance if there is anything "upstream" in the chain that is FW400.
Only connect one cable to the FW800 port on the case.
The hub is going to keep everything connected to it as 400Mbps.
Keep it simple. I think you could be ocnfusing your system (and could damage the drive's directory) with it being connected to the 800-port AND a cable from the hub. Just use the native 800-port on G5.

Specs for Hard drive limits in a satellite P305D-S8836

I am attempting to find out what are the specs I have to meet to upgrade my current hard drive to a larger two. Since Toshiba support doesn't have an email I have been able to locate on this web site and I am currently deployed to Afghanistan, calling is a little bit of an issue. I think this is a simple question that email support should be able to answer. Of course the feed back I got from the Toshiba web page feed back (only email I found) only directed me to the toshiba global webpage when I specificly stated I was looking for an email to address a simple question. Enough rants about how unhelpful this page has been up to this point. If someone here can assist me with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Yes it is limited to 4gig of ram total using two 2gig sticks.
If they won't ship to an APO, AE, or other military address have it shipped to a family member or friend with a regular US address and have them ship it to you.

IBook making horrible noises and now my hard drive is missing?!

This morning my iBook started making this horrible noise and then none of my programs would respond. I was able to temporarily fix it using disk utility. It then started again a few hours ago. I tried doing what I did before, but this time it didnt work. I have also been getting a flashing ? at start up. I tried all the steps listed here:

When I booted from the Mac OSX disk, my Hard Drive wasnt mounted so I went through al the steps for resetting the PRAM and that didnt work either. I finally went to do Archive Install and now I have no Hard Drive!?

Hi, Rachel. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I would recommend investing in DiskWarrior to repair your hard drive. It can often find the drive when Apple's own Disk Utility cannot.
My advice would be to buy DiskWarrior, use it to repair your hard drive, and then do the Archive and Install.

Recommendations for hard drive enclosures

Hi,
My G5 1.8ghz Dual Power Mac finally died today after eight years good service. I'm looking to remove the hard drive and wondered if anybody had any recommendations for enclosures that I could put it in? Is there anything I need to bear in mind when buying the enclosure or are they all pretty standard?
I've already purchased a new iMac as a replacement computer - I just want to be able to access the data in the old hard drive.

After going through several, I can only recommend those from OWC (Kappy's last link). I just stripped down a Western Digital Sudio Mac Edition external with a quad interface i bought seveal years ago to recover the bare drive becasue the enclosure's been nothing but a royal PITA.
The drive itself is fine but the enclosure uses a very Mac-unfriendly set of hardware that has sleep issues, lock-up issues, noise issues, won't properly mount to the Desktop, runs hot, and so on. Until I get a new OWC enclosure for the bare WD drive, I moved an older OWC external to take over the backup functions and it works like a dream. And it has a slower interface (FireWire400) but takes little longer to backup than the WD with FW800.
WD makes great internal drives--we have many in our menagerie of Macs--but their enclosures are just cheap and not Mac-friendly, even though I bought the "Mac Edition" version.

Clicking sound... afraid for hard drive!

As of only a couple days ago, my laptop (HP HDX 16) has suddenly started to make a quiet, yet noticable, high pitched clicking kind of sound. I'm afraid this is the sign of a dying hard drive (and I've only had this laptop since August 2009... I highly doubt its lifespan is meant to be 1.5 years). I'm in the process of backing everything up, but I have some key questions:
1. Is the hard drive dying for sure?
If no...
2. How do I quiet this sound, and what is causing it?
And if yes...
3. How much time do I have?
4. Is there any way to slow down the process?
5. Should I keep using the laptop like normal, or use it as little as possible?

This is a peer to peer help forum. Most of us don't work for HP. Therefore, we are speaking from our own experience.
I listened to the recording that you made. While there was a lot of white noise, I did hear a high pitched sound at the beginning of it. Personally, it doesn't sound like a hard drive to me. I can't say what it is with any certainty, however. I suggest using HP Support Assistant to check the drive's condition. Also, you can troubleshoot the other components, as well.

Prosoft Data Rescue for Hard Drive "No Valid Packages" in Disk Utility

I have a Macbook and I believe the hard drive has crashed. When I turn it on, I get the circle with line through it and the folder with question mark inside blinking.
I got the Install Disk 1 to boot up but can not verify the hard drive. I get the following message "No Valid Packages" and disk verification fails. I also checked the SMART status of the hard drive and it says "Not Supported".
I also can not re-install the operating system, as there is no hard drive that shows up to install it to when I try to run the installer disk.
I know I need a new hard drive, much bigger one. I'm purchasing this today, a 320gb Samsung M6 Series internal drive and a Western digital external 500gb WDE1U5000N.
I also want to purchase the Prosoft Data Rescue but have several questions:
1)I read the this can work if disk utility sees the hard drive. The hard drive is seen in disk utility, but like i said before the drive has failed and it can not mount. I've read other reviews that said Prosoft can still be used in this case, but I want to make sure..please define what is meant by "disk utility being unable to see the hard drive"...Does this mean "dead hard drive or the hard drive not physically being VISIBLE in disk utility (because mine is, I just can't mount or verify it)
2)If I can use Prosoft, when I put it in my damaged Macbook to recover the files, can I then put these files onto my new external drive? Or do I have to have another internal drive to do this? (I'm just buying 1 right now)...How do you get the recovered data off if I can not move it onto an external drive? Do I put it on a disk and then take the damaged hard drive out, put the new one in and then put it on the external?

Prosoft Data Rescue can help recover files after a software failure. (Usually related file directory problems.) It sounds, however, that you've experienced a hardware failure of your original hard drive. No amount of software can ever recover a hard drive from a hardware failure. If you really need to recover the data, a data recovery service may be able to help. The cost will depend on the steps needed to recover the data and how much data is recovered.

Is there a size limit for hard drive boot partition?

I have been using Drive Genius to adjust the size of my boot partition larger. But it doesn't seem to allow for much increase, even though I deleted the second partition and tried to apply the disk space to DH1: (boot - there is a single partition on the hard drive now.)
It recognizes only 59.53gb and the drive is I think around 130gb. Anything beyond 59.53 is unusable since I deleted that second partition though I could probably get it back with a second partition.
Is this a Tiger issue or a Mac issue? It resized it bigger somewhat, so it seems to be something about the particular size. I want a really big space for my applications and so on.

You don't want to make a disc image. You want to clone to an external drive:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Once you finish the clone open Startup Disk and set the clone as your startup volume, then click on the Restart button. You should now boot from the clone. You can then repartition the internal hard drive the way you want, then clone the external drive to the internal one.

Cost for Hard drive replacement

If my 15-inch MacBook Pro's hard drive fails and don't have any warranty how much will Apple charge me for a replacement and the installment of the os so it's up and running again? I have a 250GB 5400 rpm. I would do it my self but i'm just scared that I would mess something up or something might go wrong.

As you have been told doing the upgrade is extremely easy, it takes about 10 minutes. Apple even has the instructions in the owners manual...you did read the manual didn't you? You can get a 500 GB replacement for less than $100 and be back up and running very shortly. If you have a good backup that even makes it easier. The site I've provided the link to specializes in Macs and even provides free how to videos.
If you do choose to have Apple do it, then you will need to contact Apple for a quote.

Options for hard drive replacement

Disk Utility is reporting a fatal error on the original Toshiba 40Gb hard drive on my powerbook. Besides this, the computer is in perfect condition so I would like to keep using it since I've upped the RAM to 1Gb. Can anyone recommend a good place online to buy a drive? Also, since it is quite an old model are there limitations on the kind of drive I can replace it with? What specs should I be aiming for?

You want to replace it with a 2.5" parallel ATA (not serial ATA or SATA) hard drive. Good news is the replacement drive will be 5400rpm, which is faster than the original hard drive. Two sources for online purchases in the US are http://www.newegg.com and http://www.macsales.com . Seagate drives have a 5 year warranty while others have 1 to 3 years, if that's a consideration. Recomendations for Hard Drive recovery tool

Does any one have a recommendation for a Hard Drive recovery tool?
My brothers external Lacie 200MB Firewire drive has crapped out. He has all his family movies (iMovie projects) stored on it so he really needs to recover the files if possible.
I have the drive now and have hooked it up to my machines and it is definitely in bad shape. At this point I can see the drive in the finder, but it doesn't appear to contain any files or folders. It also shows up in Disk Utilities, but a Verify Disk doesn't reveal any problems (and running "Repair Disk" returned "No repairs were necessary, the volume seems to be OK").
At this point the disk just appears to be empty. I am running a deep scan with Stellar Phoenix right now. Any suggestions on the best OS X recovery tools.

I was thinking about yanking the drive and installing it internally to the ide bus - don't know if this would make a difference.

Well, that’s a lot of interesting advice.
The first thing to do is NOTHING! Don’t try heroic efforts until you’ve explored all the demonstrably non-destructive ones.
First of all, if the drive mounts, gives no errors from the Finder or from Disk Utility but appears to contain no files, then the likelihood that this is a symptom of a hardware error is very small. Moving the drive to different enclosures or trying to connect it internally is probably not advisable.
Are you cerrtain the drive was not simply re-initialized? That would be the simplest explanation for there being no files apparent. If that’s the case, then surely a majority of the contents are recoverable, BUT NOT IF YOU DO ANYTHING FURTHER WITH THE DRIVE.
If you have recovery software that’s specifically designed to recover files from a re-initialized volume, use that. If not and you cannot acquire such software, and if the data is valuable enough, then I strongly recommend that you use a commercial data recovery service.
Unfortunately, I cannot give you any specific recommendations for diagnostic and repair software—I’ve been away from Mac OS too long.
I know this is not very specific, and I’m sorry for that. I’ll keep an eye out in case you have other questions that I might be able to answer.
