Simple OS 9 upgrade question

I am running an IMac on 8.6 and need to upgrade to 9 to install a new printer. Even tho I live in the US, I bought the computer in the UK so it has UK English 8.6 OS on it. I have purchased the OS 9 install disc from a reseller here in the States but it's telling me that it can only install on top of the US English version. So, at the risk of sounding ignorant or lazy, where in the UK is the best place to purchase an OS 9 installation disc for immediate shipping? I've Googled about a zillion UK Mac resellers and no one seems to have it. Thanks.

Hi, dandy -
If you do not have a record of the serial numbers of some software, you may then need to move the preference file(s) for it over to the new System Folder. IF you do have a record of those, it is a simple matter to re-enter them when you run the software the first time in the new OS. For that reason, I make it a habit to note the serial number for any software that needs such inside the manual for the software, so I always have a hard copy of it.
Some software (QuickTime is one such) will display its registration/serial number in its preferences or elsewhere, from where it can be copied.
With a clean install, will I have to reinstall software or is it only extensions and drivers associated with software etc that will disappear? It appears from the article you linked and from other sources that I can drag and drop the extensions from the old folder to the new but it would ease my mind greatly if you would just confirm that.
It is usually just extensions, possibly a control panel or two - those can usually be just dragged over to the new System Folder.
However, it may also be necessary to move browser data and email data over to the new System Folder.
Netscape usually keeps all of its stuff in a folder named Netscape Users in the Preferences folder.
Internet Explorer keeps its files in a folder named Explorer in the Preferences folder.
Outlook Express is a bit different - older versions kept the email archive files in the Outlook Express folder; newer versions running in OS 9 keep those files in the Documents folder that is created by an OS 9 install, here - (hard drive) >> Documents >> Microsoft User Data >> Identities. In the Identities folder will be a folder for each account (identity); the default one is named Main Identity. These separate folders contain the email archive files for each account.
If you've added extra fonts, you will need to also move those.
When moving items from the old System Folder to the new one, be sure to not move any extensions or control panels which belong to OS 8.6; such can contaminate an OS 9 install and cause problems.

  • Simple Hard Drvie upgrade question

    I have an iMac 300 (no firewire) I got off eBay, and according to the boards my HD is on the way out (I can hear the whirring).
    Because it came off of eBay I don't have the Panther install disks, so would it be possible to upgrade to something larger and faster?

    Agree - a 10 dollar USB enclosure plus CCC is the way to go for rock-bottom price. Having said that, I don't want to discourage you from buying a retail copy of panther - it is certainly, in general, a good thing to have system startup disks handy - just in case.
    One final thing: I'm not totally sure which iMac you have but it looks like it belongs to the group that MUST have its OS within the first 8 gigs of harddrive space. In other words, make sure you partition your new drive so that partition 1 which will hold the OS is just a tad less than 8 gig.

  • Security upgrade question - Getting 6.1.6 downloaded to iphone.

    Security upgrade question - I have a 4S phone v6.01 with an upgrade to IOS 7.04 already downloaded and ready for install.  I would like to install the 6.1.6 security upgrade instead. How do I delete the ios7 in the queue or have the 6.1.1 pushed as an option to the phone?

    You can't install iOS 6.1.6 on that device and must update it to 7.0.6.

  • Simple, funny but annoying question, putting a pixel

    Maybe this could be simple, funny but annoying question.
    How do you put a pixel or draw a pixel?
    Is there a method to draw a pixel directly on screen in j2SDK API?

    This is a very open ended question, do you want to draw a pixel in an image or just draw a shape on the screen?
    If you want to edit single pixels at a time then the best option is to create a BufferedImage and use the WritableRaster to edit the pixels you want by using setPixel().
    Something like the following:
    BufferedImage img = new BufferedImage(width, height, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
    WritableRaster raster = img.getRaseter();
    raster.setPixel(x_coord, y_coord, new int[]{R_val, G_val, B_val});This image can then be displayed by putting it in a JLabel (there are many other techniques but I find this the easiest method).
    JLabel l = new JLabel(new ImageIcon(img));
    JFrame jf = new JFrame();
    jf.setContentPane(l);
    jf.pack();Alternatively, you can draw shapes by using Graphics or Graphics2D objects
    e.g.
    public class MyPanel extends JPanel
      public void paintComponent(Graphics2D g)
         super.paintComponent(g);
         g.drawLine(x1,y1,x2,y2);
    }Hope this helps,

    I have an upgrade question. I received a notification when I connected my computer to the internet that Lightroom 5.7.1 was available it included HDR & Panoramic photo merge. I cant find these. Where do I find them.

    well that was a big waste of my time & data allowance then ...
    I live in a flaky slow internet area & I keep my photo edit machine off the internet unless & want to update something. CC is no use to me & that useless update just used up a 12th of my allowance for the year ...

  • Another RAM upgrade question

    Hi everyone,
    I know there seems to be lots of RAM upgrade questions here but hey thats what forums are for.
    I'm looking to upgrade my macbook's RAM it's currently got 2GB (2x1GB)
    Is it possible to purchase 1x4GB and put that with one of my current 1GB sticks to create a total of 5GB?
    I would be interested to know if this is possible or if anyone has tried it.
    Thanks in advance
    Scott

    This will work if your MacBook is late '07 or newer.

  • Simple upgrade question

    Greetings,
    I currently own on older Macbook and I'm considering upgrading to the new 13" Macbook Pro. I know I can transfer my user accounts using the Firewire transfer, but since the Macbook Pro comes with a smaller hard drive than I'm currently using, I would like to ask if it is a good idea just to swap out the drive in the older Macbook and put it in the Macbook Pro? I'm currently running Snow Leopard, so that should not be an issue. Has anyone done this? And if so, what problems did you run into?

    Since the new MacBook Pros' manuals have not yet been made available (they will show up [here|http://support.apple.com/manuals/#portablecomputers] when Apple puts them online) your questions are not easy to answer, but assuming Apple's designs are similar to the previous generation MBP, you should be able to swap out the hard drives without any problem. Since some of your internal hardware may be different and require different drivers (such as for graphics chips) the software from your old MBP may not run the new one, so it may be necessary to reinstall the OS.
    Hope this helps you. Best of luck.

  • Simple upgrade question : CS3 to CS5

    Which serial number do i pop into the box?...okokok, I'm overtired, maybe this is obvious...
    Do I use the one that came on the CS5 upgrade package?...will that read my last version of photoshop and just install?...
    Do I use the SN that came on my upgrade version of CS3?...
    thanks
    M
    ps...I'm just trying to avoid the upgrade mini-nightmare I had when I installed CS3...an hour on the phone with people in india, one who had no clue what she was talking about, heavy accents leading to even more difficult communication...I really don't want to go through that again...

    Hi,
    Do you mean you are trying to upgrade from CS3 to CS5???
    1> yes you can upgrade
    2> if you have CS5 upgrade cop, in order to install you need to have obviously CS5 Srial Number + CS3 Serial Number and while installing CS5 that will take you to upgrade check as soon as you enter CS5 Serial Number. if you do not have CS3 serial number then you will have to contact Adobe for unlocking your CS5.
    Hope this helps..!

  • Simple ASA 55xx to 55xx-X upgrade question

    I have an older model ASA 5500-series and I've purchased a new 5555-X.  If they are both at roughly the same up-to-date software version, can I simply copy the config from the old ASA to the new one?
    I know that I will possibly have to make minor changes such as changing the interface names (ethernet or fa to gi) but are there any significant command structure changes that would cause problems?  (problems caused specifically by moving from a 55xx to a 55xx-X)?

    It really depends what you have configured and what version you are running on the old ASA compaired to the new one.  For example, is the old one running 9.1 and the new one running 9.2?
    If you don't have any thing very specific or special configured for your network, ie. you just have ACL, Objects / object-groups, NAT etc. then you will be fine with copying the configuration straight over with possibly a few minor changes (as you have already mentioned).

  • Visual Studio 2005/2008 and Crystal Reports versions/upgrade questions.

    I've tried posting this question on the MSDN forums and gotten no response.
    I've downloaded and installed VS 2008 Beta 2.   The versions on the Crystal Reports files included are 10.5.0.1806
    I'm currently using VS 2005, with the included Crystal Reports.  The versions on those files are 10.2.0.xxxx.  I've created an desktop app (in VB) which stores it's data in a database and uses the CR 10 runtime merge modules to generate a report.
    I was considering upgrading the Crystal Reports version to XI.  I would like to allow customers to modify my delivered report with their own licensed copy of CR XI.  I am not providing any functionality within my app to create or modify the delivered .rpt or use it outside my application.
    Questions:
    Do I need to update the runtime files to CR XI to support rpt files modified with CR XI?  Current runtime files are being delivered with the CR 10 merge module.
    I see a Crystal Reports for Visual Studio upgrade to CR XI.
    Can I update the merge modules to CR XI and still use the CR for VS2005 for development?
    Does it make any sense to update CR for VS 2005?  Or to get the full CR XI Developer edition?  My usage of CR functionality is very limited.
    Would there be any benefit to waiting for the release of VS 2008?   How does that change the scenario?
    How does Crystal Reports for Visual Studio fit in with the Crystal Reports Lifecycle?  It's not mentioned on Business Objects End of Life Dates page . Crystal 10 has a Patch EOL of 31-Dec-07.   Does this apply to CR for VS 2005?  Where does 10.5 fit in?
    My main concern is allowing customers with CR XI to change the format of my delivered .rpt to run with my app.  Adding their company name, logo, etc.   My testing show a CR XI report still works with my current app.  But, going forward, what should I deliver and what do I need to use to continue development?

    To use Reports designed in XI, you need to use XI or higher runtime, running them in older versions may work, but you may encounter unforeseen issues doing so.
    If you are to use VS2005 for development you need to use XI Release 2 (11.5) runtime.
    If you are going to use VS2008 for development you need to use Crystal Reports 2008 with Service Pack 0.
    The support end of life for versions of Crystal Reports bundled with Visual Studio are linked to what Microsoft's lifecycle for the product is.  Generally if there is a workaround for the issue that is simple enough, there will not be a patch created.
    The changes you are expecting the customer to do can be accomplished with our RAS SDK which is available without using enterprise starting with Crystal Reports XIR2 SP2.

  • Another "using another person's upgrade" question

    Sorry in advance if this question has been covered 100 times before.  I spent some time trying to find an answer that fits my scenario in the forums but didn't find an exact fit.
    My Droid Incredible touch screen stopped working this past week (no drops, no water, no reason to stop working) and since I am 1yr and 3months into owning the device and have no insurance the local store said I'm pretty much SOL and to contact HTC.  Dealing with HTC has been the worst customer service experience of my life and they pretty much said the same thing since they only cover their devices for 1 year.  (Said I could send it in to their repair facility on my dime for 2 weeks minimum and they would determine the repair cost and contact me).  So I can't upgrade until April on my account and am trying to figure out a way to get a new phone (not at full price).
    My girlfriend has been up for an upgrade for months now (she uses a basic phone, no data) and isn't in any hurry to use it.  She does't ever want a smart phone and said that I should just use her upgrade.  So, the details and questions are as follows:
    1. We are not on the same account (family plan).  We have individual plans.  My plan is 400 or so mintues of talk and unlimited data.  Her plan is 400 minutes or so of talk.
    2. I would like to use her upgrade to get an iphone 4s.
    3. We do not want to change her plan (its something like $30 a month grandfathered plan).
    4. I would like to keep my current plan as well.  (unlimited data)
    Is it possible to make all of these things happen?  I have read that it is simple if you are on a family plan to do this.  Can we go down to the local store and get an iphone 4s and activate it on my account instead of hers?
    As a side question (and to make things more complicated)... Does anyone know if we can we combine our accounts together into 1 account and save money or minutes.  We both hardly use our minutes at all and aside from me using the data plan for work we toss out hundreds of minutes per month.
    Thanks in advance for any replies!

Most likely - if it is a corporate store.  If it's an "authorized reseller" or a third party store, it amy be more difficult and they may tell you they can't do it.
    As a side question (and to make things more complicated)... This MAY make it more simple!  Does anyone know if we can we combine our accounts together into 1 account and save money or minutes.  We both hardly use our minutes at all and aside from me using the data plan for work we toss out hundreds of minutes per month.
    You can get a family plan with 700 shared minutes, 2 lines, for $70, and the data plan on your phone would be $30.  I'm not sure if you would be able to keep your unlimited data though - you might be if you do this in stages.  First, combine your two accounts into one family plan and do nothing about upgrading for now.  Let that "settle"; your upgrade dates and eligibilities will remain the same as they were on your individual plans.  If you can make this transition and keep your unlimited data, then you're good to go upgrade the eligible line (your girlfirend's) to the iPhone, but activate it on your line.  Her line's contract will be extended for two years, but she can use her old phone and you can use the iPhone.  If the unlimited data did carry over, it will remain for the iPhone too.
    Thanks in advance for any replies!

  • Upgrade question........ sorry 1 more

    I have A macbook white, early 08. I just bought my upgrade from audiomidi for 99$. im not ready to upgrade my main studio but i want to upgrade my macbook. simple question, will my key still work in my main studio or will i need to upgrade both. I did a search and it seems it should be ok. Some people said i would need to partition part of my hard drive or something. I just need time to learn how to navigate around on 8. my macbook is 10.5.7 but my ppc is 10.4.11. My setup is solid now so im really nervous to upgrade my main studio. Thank you all for taking time out to read my post i know this is a on going question but i turn to my family for knowledge.

    You can even run L7+8 on the same system if you want to, they are independent apps so it's totally ok to just upgrade on your Macbook and keep on running 7 in your studio. L8 doesn't need a dongle anymore, just once during the upgrading process so after that you can leave the dongle in your studio. Be aware though that some L7 content will be overwritten, e.g. Space Designer presets and some Garageband content, which has to be retrieved after the upgrading process.

  • T60p upgrade questions

    I am looking to max out the ram on my lenovo T60p Type 8741-52U
    Currently it has 2gb of ram, is the max 3gb or 4gb for this model of laptop, I've seen mention of both as the limits and would like to know that first before I spend money on ram.
    Second, it has a 100gb 7200 rpm hdd, and I want to enlarge it as well, what is the max hdd it can support or is there any issues with a larger drive.  I'm a software developer and am constantly having to offload data to an external drive to free up space on the notebook.
    The processor is a T7600 @2.33ghz Intel core 2 duo, this should support a 64bit OS correct?  I'm currently running XP Pro sp3 on it and want to upgrade to the new Win7 RC1 and try it out while I'm doing the upgrade, has anyone tried Win7 on a T60?
     Thanks for any help provided

    Both slots are there, have you actually opened up the system to have a look? Watch the video:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-63770
    As said in this thread, only 3GB will be usable regardless of the OS.

  • RAM upgrade questions.

    Hey guys. This is my first thread, and quite honest, I'm not sure if I'm at the right place at all.
    Oh, well.
    I'm a proud owner of an (maybe older model) MSI GE60 2OC.
    It came with:
    Intel i5-4200M 2.5 GHz
    6GB ram
    GeForce GT 750M 2GB
    500GB hard drive
    - and some other cool stuff! :D
    However, I find my computer quite slow. And the "only" things I could "blame" would be my ram and perhaps my hard drive.
    So, I was wondering if it's possible for me to upgrade my current 6GB to 8GB (or more?) and if so, how is that done? (Thinking about finding the proper ram kit).
    And also, while at it, I'm sure it would also help getting a SSD?
    Sorry for the confusing questions - but I hope you guys can help me out :-)
    Thanks in advance!

    Upgrading the RAM is fairly simple. It can take up to 16GB (2 x 8GB) of DDR3-1600 or DDR3-1866 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V modules. To install, you'll have to remove the back plate of the laptop (there will probably be a warranty sticker that you'll have to break to do so) and swap out the RAM that is installed.
    As for the SSD, the GE60 will have a 2.5" HDD installed, and it should have an open slot for an mSATA SSD as well. You could either replace the HDD with a 2.5" SSD, or just add in an mSATA SSD. You'll need a cloning utility (such as Acronis True Image) to clone your current HDD to the new SSD, so you can retain all of your data and the recovery partition.
    If you want to replace the HDD with a 2.5" SSD, you'll need to make a full disk image of the drive, restore it to the SSD, then swap the drives.
    If you want to add in an mSATA SSD, I would recommend cloning your OS partition to the mSATA to use as your boot drive, then format the OS partition of the HDD and use that partition for data storage. Just be sure to leave the recovery partition intact on the HDD. If you don't need to clone your current OS partition and you're okay with having a clean slate, you should be able to run the recovery from the HDD and reinstall the OS to the mSATA.

  • Drive upgrade questions

    I have a MPB that's about 18 months old. I have the AppleCare extended warranty with it.
    My 160 GB drive is 3/4 full but I can stay on top of it with periodic cleanups. Eventually though I'll have to make a decision about an upgrade.
    Question -- can I (either by myself or at an Apple Store or elsewhere) replace my internal drive w/o voiding my extended warranty? And is Superduper (do I have that right) the best app to ghost an image of my current HD to a potentially new HD?

    You could replace the drive yourself. It's not a simple project, but it is doable. However, any consequential damage caused by your replacing the drive will void the warranty with respect to those repairs. Having the work done by an Apple Certified Technician will prevent that from happening.
    Unfortunately, most Apple service centers that replace drives may insist on keeping the drive they remove. Although technically what you want to do is not really a warranty replacement of a defective drive, they may insist on it. If they do and that's not a problem for you, then you can have the shop clone your old drive to the new one for you.
    If you choose to do the work yourself you will find an excellent video tutorial at MacSales.com. They are also a good choice for purchasing a new drive.
    Cloning the drive doesn't require any third-party software. You can use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone the drive:
    How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the drive to which you will clone the old drive.
    Source means the drive you are cloning from.
