Simple outline

I'm new to Photoshop and am trying to get the shape of the continent of North America. I want to draw an outline from a map and fill in the space with a single colour and throw away the map. I found an outline map and brought it into Photoshop. The only relevant tool I could find was PATH, but I don't seem to be able to separate the original image from the drawing, so I can't throw away the original image.
Ideas?

Add a new layer first and work on that layer.  Then any drawing, masking, whatever you do is on a separate layer (which is initially transparent, so you can see Africa through it).
Hope this helps.

  • Organism: extensible outliner+personal organizer (needs beta testers)

    Organism is basically a simple outliner structured in a very modular way: the core is written in Python 2 (but should be easily adaptable to Python 3) and provides the backend for interacting with sqlite databases, where the data is stored.
    The core also provides an API that can be used by 3 kinds of addons: extensions, interfaces and plugins.
    Extensions are meant to extend core functionalities, and provide their own API: they can directly query the databases.
    Interfaces are the addons that let the user directly interact with core's and extensions' API: currently only a wxPython interface is implemented. Interfaces cannot directly query the databases, they must make calls to the core or the extensions.
    Plugins are for interfaces what extensions are for the core: they extend interface functionalities and cannot directly query the databases.
    The various addons are currently distributed with 3 components (installation packages, but I decided not to use the word "package" since it conflicts with Python packages):
    * the "main" component provides the core, a copy/paste extension, the wxPython interface and some basic plugins.
    * the "organizer" component provides extensions and plugins that let the user define time scheduling rules for each database entry; alarms are raised when events take place, and they can be snoozed or dismissed, like the average calendar application.
    * the "development" component provides some tools for developers and beta testers (currently only "print database tables" and "populate database")
    Organism and its addons are released under GPLv3.

    SCREENSHOTS
    * http://www.dariogiovannetti.net/files/organism01.png
    * http://www.dariogiovannetti.net/files/organism02.png
    CURRENT KNOWN LIMITATIONS
    * At the current state, plugins can add their own items to the interface's main menu, but by default they just append them at the bottom of the main entries, so the user needs to customize them in Organism's configuration file, which is located in ~/.config/organism/organism.conf. The location of the configuration file can be changed with the --config flag, all the available options are shown with the --help flag.
    * Once you create a database, the current addon configuration is stored in it, so you won't be able to open it with a different combination of addons: this is done to prevent data corruption, since an extension may add some particular data that needs updating, and if the database is opened without that extension it may get corrupted. Of course The next release of Organism will give the ability to "update" the databases to support the new versions of the addons.
    * At the moment only 3 schedule rules are implemented, but they are fairly easy to write and can be requested specifically.
    * This post is currently by far the best piece of documentation about Organism (except the source itself), I'll try to catch up on that too ^^
    * The next goal is releasing a stable 1.0.0 version, which means that only the most essential features are implemented, there's much room for improvement!
    DEPENDENCIES
    Beside wxpython, needed until the current interface is the only one available, Organism depends on 4 external Python modules I wrote during its development:
    * python2-plural: a little module that returns the needed form of a string depending on one or more input variables.
    * python2-loggingext: an extension to the logging module that lets the logger use different formatters for different log message levels.
    * python2-texthistory: a simple undo/redo engine for plain text and wx.TextCtrl.
    * python2-configfile: a class useful for dynamically parsing and writing configuration files, with support for subsections and more.
    python2-texthistory and python2-configfile may even be tested separately, if somebody is interested in using them for other projects.
    BETA TESTING
    Organism is in pre-beta, which means that I'm still accepting minor feature requests before going beta and starting the real testing campaign: that's why I'm looking for people interested in the project who want to help testing it.
    Beta testers should concentrate in particular in these fields:
    * defects in reading/writing the configuration file
    * defects in the database's undo/redo engine
    * defects in item text editor's undo/redo engine
    * defects in the organizer's management of timed item occurrences
    Of course bugs can happen everywhere, they can be reported at https://github.com/kynikos/organism/issues and https://github.com/kynikos/organism-organizer/issues
    Beta testers should use organism either by setting the logging level to "33" in the configuration file or by launching it with "--loglevel 33".
    ARTISTIC CONTRIBUTIONS
    I'm also looking for somebody intersted in an artistic collaboration for creating an original icon, since currently Organism is using GTK theme icons only.
    Thanks for reading

  • Creating an outline around text or objects that follows their shape

    I have tried the offset path, however it gets too large.  I am looking to keep things simple but need a bit more definition that just a simple outline will give.  On this particular image I am looking to create an outline or fill shape behind the words and pistol but wanting to keep roughly the same shape.  Any pointers?

    I think I've got it now. The Apreance panel will probably do the trick. Here's how:

  • Outlining shapes leaves "leftover" junk

    My basic work flow often is drawing with the pen tool, filling and combining intersecting areas with the shape builder tool.  When artwork is complete, I do need a simple outline of the artwork to be used as a toolpath, for another application.  It doesn't really matter what it is, the point is it NEEDS to be a single continuous line.  To do this, I select all the shapes, and on the pathfinder palette click on OUTLINE.  This indeed produces what APPEARS to be just an outline of the overall design.  However, this command leaves a LOT of unwanted garbage, left over segments and overlapping lines.  The lines are also not single, continous lines, rather they are segmented, individual, broken little chunks often, and as I mentioned, 2,3 lines are left on TOP of each other.  What a mess!  When you zoom in as far as possible, it appears that some of those overlapping lines are actually SLIGHTLY off, not exactly on top of each other.
    I am guessing, what may be happenning is that the shapes that are not tightly next to each other.  There are microscopic gaps between them.  When I fill the initial paths/lines with the shape builder tool, it does NOT percisely fill the shapes all the way to the paths.  In other words, if I have circle for example, with a line going down the middle and fill the right half with a color and the left half with a color, the left and right colors do not meet in the middle along the same exact line.  It looks like they do, but I don't think its 100% accurate.  So, when outlining these two shapes, the reason why there are "overlapping" line segments, is because technically they are not exactly the line, so the outline command produced two lines.  It just appears that they are on top of each other, but they are not, as can be seen with a 6400 % magnification.
    Question is, how can I produce a nice clean outline of all these shapes butting up next to each other?  It needs to be a single continous path where the shapes met.
    Thanks!

    Please show your illustration and what you want to get as a result.
    If you need an outline, the outline-pathfinder might be the wrong tool.

  • How do you add outer glow effect to text in Elements 12?

    I've created a layer in Elements 12 that contains some text.  I'd like to add an outer glow effect.
    This is what I am doing:
    1.  Select layer with text
    2.  Click FX button at bottom of screen
    3.  Click Styles tab
    4.  Select Outer Glow from drop down
    5.  I can see 11 preset option.  The only one that works is called 'Fire' and it is not the style I'm looking for.  I want a simple outline, but none of the other presets have any effect.
    Any help would be appreciated!!  Thanks!

    Jeff,.
    You're almost there!
    Try  #4 Outer Glow>Simple. Apply.
    Now on the text layer in the layers palette, there is an f on the right. Double click on the f
    This brings up the Style settings dialog. At the bottom, check "Stroke", and adjust with the sliders to suit.

  • Regarding : Creation of child nodes in a outlinefield

    Hi,
    I am facing a few problems in creating a child node. I read elements from an array to populate the outline field. The array has exact definitions as to what should be a parent and child respectively. While I am able to create nodes at the parent level, I am unable to create child nodes for any parent. I discovered that the value for the parent node is getting lost. I have tried to use some of the methods to arrive at the parent node, but to no anvil. Could some one suggest how exactly to get the value of the parent node so that the child node can be assigned to the parent.
    Thanks In advance.

    P.S : I have seen the examples Simple Outline field and File Browser. No clues from here.

    I take it that you are traversing through the array and loading each
    element into the OutlineField. At the risk of stating the obvious, for
    each element you must also identify it's parent. This is necessary to
    set the relationship from the child to the parent or vise versa.
    If you are already doing this and are still having difficulty, the
    problem may be as simple as setting the IsFolder property of the parent
    node. Unless this is done, it's child nodes will not be visible.

  • How to make a cycle of arrows

    Hi I'm trying to draw a diagram in photoshop and need to make a cycle of arrows (like these: http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-13403155/stock-vector-vector-arrows-around-circles.html)
    Is there a way to accomplish this?
    Thanks in advance!

    Try this link and get a free pack of vector arrows: http://vector.tutsplus.com/articles/web-roundups/free-vector-arrows/
    Also this from a existing thread:
    How to create a curved arrow in photoshop tutorial
    Correct, that's a matter of using Paths (pen tool). However, there are a couple ways to go about it.
    If you want a simple outlined head...
    1) Draw a curved path, deselect it, then draw an angled path for the arrow head. Select both Paths and Stroke them using a brush that's the width/size you want your lines to be.
    If you want a solid triangular shaped head...
    2) Use the Line tool and set the Options to use the "Vector Shape Layer" setting (1st icon button on the far left of the bar).
    In the Line tool settings also, open the Geometry Options menu and set your line to have an arrow head at the end of it.
    Now draw a straight line, that starts and ends where you want your arrow to start and end.
    Zoom in close on the middle of the line.
    With the Pen tool selected, hold down the ALT key and click on one side of the line. Then click again on the opposite side of the line. This adds 2 new nodes to your path.
    Hold the Ctrl key down and drag out a selection around these 2 new nodes. Then while still holding the Ctrl key, click-&-drag either of the nodes in the direction you want your arrow line to bend.
    Click outside the shape to deselect it.
    Now hold the Ctrl key again and drag out a selection around the 3 corner points on the solid arrow head (tip and both side corner).
    Press Ctrl+T. Click-&-drag on the outside of the Distortion square to rotate your head so it's better aligned to your arrow line. Press the Enter key to apply, then deselect the path nodes.  You now have 2 types of fully editable curved arrow lines.
    good luck,

  • EDI management for POs

    I just am looking for a simple outline (with possible screenshots) regarding managing and following up with vendors that are set up with EDI. All the vendor master data and materials master data is set up, I am just looking for a basic outline for EDI PO processing and managing/overseeing the IDOC messages (both inbound and outbound) and the possible responses to vendor's IDOC messages.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Managing/overseeing IDOC Messages:
    Transactions : WE02 or WE05 (Display IDOC)
    EDI PO Processing:
    Define the output type “NEU” (new) or your own output type for XXX in purchasing master data and assign the Message Control dispatch time “4” (immediately with application update) and the transmission medium “EDI”. Choose the output mode “Transfer IDoc immediately” and “Start subsystem immediately” for XXX in the partner profiles of the IDoc interface and assign the logical message ORDERS to the combination “Application: Purchasing orders”, “Output type: NEU” (new). IDoc type ORDERS01 is assigned to this logical message.
    Define Partner Profiles for your Partner. Maintain Application and Output Type  to an IDOC Type in Partner Profile under additional outbound parameters.
    1. Message determination: Call the master data from the application and create the message as a message- or condition record, that is to say, you define the conditions under which the message is found and proposed, as well as the message properties. For example, you can enter the purchasing organization and the business partner as the conditions and the output medium (in this case 6 for EDI), dispatch time and language in which the message is to be sent as the output properties.
    2. Message processing through IDoc dispatch: The messages are sent by the Message Control module as defined in the condition record, especially with regard to the selected dispatch time. You must also define a dispatch time (“output mode”) in the partner profiles of the IDoc interface: standard combinations of the two times are shown in the table below. The Message Control parameters from the partner profiles must also match the corresponding fields in the output type. These parameters include:
    − Application
    − Partner
    − Partner function
    − Output type
    The central selection program of the Message Control module, RSNAST00, locates and triggers the form routine EDI_PROCESSING in the program RSNASTED in table TNAPR for the selected output type. EDI_PROCESSING reads the partner profiles and uses the process code to determine the function module which is to generate the IDoc. The process code also determines the type of further processing, for example whether the IDocs are to be processed by the ALE service.
    The function modules for generating the IDocs are usually called IDOC_OUTPUT_<MT>, where <MT> represents the relevant message type. Depending on the output mode, the generated IDocs are either collected or forwarded for immediate dispatch. If the IDocs are collected, the report RSEOUT00 must be scheduled in order to forward the IDocs for dispatch.
    Regards,
    Naveen.

  • Get the Shape3D in a Scene

    I use the ObjectFile loader and i need to manipulate the objects separatly. How can i do that ?

    Hi Ed,
    What you want to do is traverse your scene graph.
    For each Node of the scene graph you need to know whether it is a Group node or a Leaf node. If it is a Leaf node then you could do a further test, such as:
    if (node instanceof Leaf) {
    if (node instanceof Shape3D) ...
    else if (node instanceof Group) {
    However, if the node is a Group then you can use the methods:
    int numChildren() and
    Node getChild(int index) to traverse the graph.
    You will need to use recursion. Here is a simple outline of how to do it.
    public void findShapes(java.util.Vector v, BranchGroup node) {
    if (node instanceof Group) {
    int numChildren = ((Group) node).numChildren();
    for (int i = 0; i < numChildren; i++)
    findShapes(v, ((Group) node).getChild(i));
    else if (node instanceof Leaf) {
    // test if it is Shape3D
    // if so add it to the vector
    ** - this code has not been tested
    Hope this helps.

    Try to set the isFolder attribute of your parent display node to TRUE.

  • How to create clean text for the web in Photoshop/Illustrator

    I am puzzled to death on how in the world to get clean text for the web in Photoshop/Illustrator, particularly white text. I want my text to turn out exactly like the text at this website: thepainteddoor.org
    If you scroll down to the bottom of that page, notice the titles "Featured Media", "Social Networking", and "Contact Information". They are all .gif images. I have tried to replicate what these images look like for about 3 hours now to no avail. Can anyone tell me how to do this? It just looks like a simple outline or drop shadow, but I can't get it to show up like that. If someone could help me replicate that effect with text (aka make it show up clean as an image), I would graciously give them money through PayPal*.
    * = I will only give cash if it will replicate it exactly (and I mean exactly)..and it won't be too much..I'm a poor college student. :-P
    Thanks in advance!
    Thomas

    You would do it the way I created it:
    Select the Text tool in Photoshop and set the font and parameters as I have listed.  Then enter whatever text you like.  It will be rendered over the top of the lower layers you may have in the document.  Save as an image of the appropriate type and you're there.
    Note that "lower layers you may have in the document" could conceivably be none at all (i.e., you render the text over a transparent document).  You could imagine saving that as a .png with transparency and get light text in an image that could then be put over the top of anything else.  The alpha mixing will see to it that the edges smoothly blend with the background.  I haven't actually tried this (I usually do try my own suggestions) because of lack of time right now.

    Edit:  Markerline and I seem to be on the same crystal-controlled wavelength.

  • Desperate help

    Hello, I am a student at a college in the United Kingdom and i am in need of some serious help. I am currently participating online for the oracle, java2 certificate(academy.oracle.com). I am in need of some help. I am struggling on two things.
    1> I have no idea how to use JTextArea or even how i can add it to programs.
    2> how i can create a applet which, when buttons are pressed, it prints according strings.
    I would be really greatful if someone could send me a Really basic and simple outline of JTextArea or even information on how to create one as i cannot understand it from the API. Also anyone able to help me with my applet problem would be very helpful.
    please feel free to post back on here, or even email me at [email protected] with a few ideas. Any ideas at all will be helpful. Thanks
    Best regards

    Thankyou for that, i will look into it. Do you know
    how to use JTextArea by any chance?Yes. I learned how from the tutorial I posted.

  • How to get keyboard back?

    I just glitched something on my Arch box that is probably easy to fix. Hoping y'all can help.
    I was getting the "can't load module shpchp. Missing kernel or user mode driver shpchp" error that I've seen others here post about.  To get rid of it, I (probably making a mistake) commented out (with a !) the loading of the hotplug module in rc.conf.
    After I rebooted, I lost my keyboard. Well, it's still here in front of me; it's just not accepting input. I have rc.conf set to load kdm as the last daemon, and when it boots into kdm I can't enter any characters in for my password.
    Is there a simple fix for this? Some sort of way to override the !hotplug  in rc.conf when I boot up?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    ouch that's a top one! how to fix stuff in a text file without a keyboard. quite honestly I don't think that's possible so your best bet is to a) get a ps2 keyboard or b) get a live cd, boot into it, mount your arch partition into a folder, edit your rc.conf
    as for the live cd's I am sure knoppix or some derivat of it will work, I am not sure if the arch installation disk works just b/c I don't know if .. actually I don't see a reason why the arch install cd shouldn't work. so try that one
    simple outline
    * boot the live cd
    * create a folder in f.e. /mnt/ ( or wherever it's the folder that counts not where it is )
    * mount /dev/discs/discY/partX ( X for whatever partition it's on; Y for first or second harddisk ( 1 for primary hard drive, 2 for second etc... )
    * go into your folder where arch is mounted
    * go into the /etc folder and edit rc.conf
    I really hope this works for you : ) but maybe you just have a second computer with another keyboard and all my typing above is useless *g*

  • Script to create synonyms for the tables of Oracle Applications

    Team,
    For Oracle Applications 11i on W2K, where might I find a script to create synonyms for all of the application tables? I would think there would be a standard script somewhere in one of the directories created during the install or on the CDs.

    John, it is ssome sort of a bleed, but in this case it's not the part that 'might be cut off' that matters; it's the part that still needs to be on the page. Yes, I meant it to be (virtually) not-noticeable for the casual reader. Of course you can make it part of the page design, that ought to ease up matters.
    The amount pages shift horizontally because of binding is called "creep", and this depends on the type of binding and the thickness of the paper. You cannot adjust for creep unless you know exactly how much this is and how your book is going to be printed and bound.
    Airkite:
    But the book that you printed worked out alright? Was it done with a different method?
    This was a simple outlined text, not an image. Through the inaccuracies of printing and binding combined, there were no straight edges *anywhere* but fortunately the lines were thick enough to let you mentally connect them
    This was done (I'm sure) with the method you proposed.
    There is an alternative way, but it's way more expensive (on the other hand, the result is impressive): after the entire process of printing, binding, and cutting, books are put in a clamp one at a time and fed through a silk screen printer, fore edge on top, and printed with whatever you like.
    I know of the existance of this technique but I haven't seen a book done like this in years and have no clue at all of the costs involved (writing that down in one sentence makes me realize those two might be connected).
