Simple pass encryption

Hello,
I've been searching online, and on the HP website but can't find much information about simple pass's security. I would like to know if and how my passwords are encrypted. I'm used to using LastPass, and other password managers that are more straight forward about how they secure your data. If anyone can help with more information, I would be very appreciative!
Thanks!
Jack

Aricari, I appreciate the reply. I understand what you are saying. However, as I understood, the software would allow you to input passwords for personal website logins, and then use the figure print reader instead of entering that password each subsequent login. Thus the my passwords are being 'remembered' or kept internally as data in some manner. It is that data, that I wanted to know how it is protected, encrypted, ect. If it is just sitting in a plain file on my computer, or HP's servers that concerns me. Do you know how the file containing those passwords that are then referred to by the figure print reader is kept safe? Or do I miss understand how it works? Surely the websites still needs told my passwords- it doesn't keep record of my figure print. Thanks so much for the help! -Jack

  • Checking the update of HP Simple Pass is no longer working.

    Hi,
This is the version of my HP simple pass
However, whenever I check for a new  update  of it, I faced this error.
Also, when trying to visit Authon Teck Store, I found 'This page can’t be displayed'
NOTE: I have a broadband internet with a speed of 512Kbps.

    Cooperator,
I realize you are not using the latest version in the version 6 series.
    From the guide:
    sp63224 HP SimplePass V6.0.100.276 Win7-8
You should install V6.0.100.276 over the top of version 6.0.100.272.
Someone on the Forum has reported that the VERY latest Chrome may not be working with HP SimplePass V6.0.100.276.  The 276 version did work with Chrome as of a few weeks ago.  If the LATEST version of CHROME does.not work, consider downgrading Chrome - or changing browsers - or waiting for a fix - or checking online for a fix.
Print all Webcards does not appear to work.  This has been the case for a while.   You will need to find a workaround.  I created a .jpg Snip of the web face in SimplePass, edited it Paint with text and hints I desired, and then saved it in an appropriate offline location.  You may select a different method that appeals to you.
There is no way to output the .tsd (or .opi) file into a readable format -- it would defeat the purpose of the file being encrypted.  As with any file, the encryption can be easily broken with the right tools; keep the file stored in a safe location.
You are correct; as stated in the guide:  The AuthenTec 6.x series of the HP SimplePass program and the Softex 8.x series of the HP SimplePass program are not compatible.  The programs are written by different code writers; the encrypted webcard export files are in different formats.   To some extent the decision to run one version or the other is a matter of choice.  For some systems, the type of hardware dictates the decision and the older or the newer version (8 series) is the best or only option.

  • Simple pass stopped working

the simple pass works for the logon screen but has stopped working on the webpages where i have the password saved, it worked last night but today its not working at all how do i fix this

    tessiss
I am sorry you are having problems.
If your system happens to be an upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, then the failure may be one of the casualties of running a hybrid File System.   This is a personal opinion and it is based on personal experience.  Others may have a different opinion.
The System Restore frequently performs better in Safe Mode.
    System Restore Overview
In case you missed these instructions in the document above, the following provides suggestions of what to do when System Restore fails:
Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8)
    Native FingerPrint Logon
The Native Windows Logon should still be on the system - it is separate from the HP SimplePass program.  As long as you did not remove / uninstall the BIOMETRICS  sign-in options, that is, you did not remove any except the HP SimplePass program from Programs and Features, then the Native Windows Logon is still intact.
Understand that the Validity Software in Programs and Features is indeed part of Windows software and should not be removed.
You have, at this point, reinstalled your Validity Sensor Driver into your Device Manager -- that, along with the Biometrics sign-in options should be sufficient for the Native logon.
Windows key > type anywhere pc > click on PC Settings > Accounts > Sign-in Options
    HP SimplePass Versions
The version 6.x HP SimplePass provided in the document is the latest in the Series 6:
    sp63224 HP SimplePass V6.0.100.276 Win7-8
If you prefer, there are older versions available - although in most cases, it is recommended you do not run any version older than   sp61399 HP SimplePass V6.0.100.272 Win7-8
Series 8 HP SimplePass is a different program.  The algorithms used to encrypt the passwords is completely different; the programs are hostile to one another -- you are correct in thinking these are not the same thing.  You can run one Series OR the other Series but you cannot have both programs on the computer at the same time.
I cannot force the Restore Point to work if it won't although I do wonder at the failure in the academic sense.  These are not questions to which I need answers -- you might consider the answers for your own purposes in determinng how to use System Restore in the Future:
    Is the system an Upgrade?
Was the system completely quiescent (no programs running) at the time you created the Restore point?
Were you connected to AC Power?
    Are the Windows Updates current?
Is your HP 3D DriveGuard Driver installed and current?
Unfortunately, I do not have a solution.
Should I think of anything that I have not included in the Instructions to Upgrade HP SimplePass , I will post back.

  • How can I completely uninstall Simple Pass Data file? where is data file kept?

Computer came with Simple Pass finger print reader.  Won't let me program Windows log on unless I enter Windows log on password.  I DO but it says "incorrect from what was originally password."
I don't know what that would be, (tried all old passwords)  so I want to ERASE ALL RETAINED DATA and reinstall.
ADD/REMOVE program removes program but data retained.  Then deleted Validity Sensor under Biometric devices so all data should be gone but upon reinstall it still says i have wrong password!
Where else is this data kept on computer and how can i remove so I can fix program?
Anyone familiar with Simplepass or recommend another fingerprint program that would work with HP Envy?
    Thanks in advance.

    Frank,
Updating the OS to Windows 8.1 does destroy the Recovery Manager -- side "benefit" that seems to go unmentioned by some of the enthusiasts of Upgrades.  On the other hand, unless the system comes with 8.1 there is little you can do -- Windows 8 is rather sad.    You have the choice of a weird hybrid "almost" Windows 8.1 or running Windows 8.  Eeeew.  I chose the upgrade on the one Windows 8 system I have -- same level of frustration but at least the problems are different than running sad Windows 8.  Smiling.
Because you know your system runs Windows 8.1 -- and there are apparently the Drivers at your system's HP Support pages for Windows 8.1 (very important), you might consider purchasing Windows 8.1 Pro and being done with the hybrid upgrade OS.  You still lose the Recovery Manager, of course, purchased 8.1 does not provide the HP Recovery Manager -- but at least the OS is stable.   You still install the HP drivers from the computer's Support site, of course.  I actually purchased 8.1 for my upgrade system and have only been too lazy to install it.  Sigh.
You can use third party Image software to back up the system.  Certainly not the only one, and maybe not even the best according to whom you ask -- one such tool:
Redo software is free and is NOT Windows dependent.
The software can be used with Both Windows and Linux Operating Systems.

  • Simple Pass not working with Windows 7 Premium

    I have a Pavillion Notebook, model dv6-6b51sa running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit O/S
For some time now my Simple Pass has not worked. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the programme but to no avail. I have read several posts to the community here and have tried just about all recommendations including; hard reset, system restore (in case it had anything to do with Windows updates) a BIOS update and shutting down and rebooting after each process.
Now, having reinstalled Simple Pass (from the HP Support website) , biometric devices do not even feature in Device Manager!
Can anyone kindly offer me assistance?

    Hi @tagl
Welcome to HP Forums! I will be happy to help with the SimplePass problem you are experiencing. The fact you are missing a biometric device in your Device Manager would be a problem because for it to work you need the software and the accompanying biometric device. Here is the Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver, install that and then see if you are able to use your fingerprint reader.

  • Pavilion dv8t 1200 - simple pass/digital persona software won't install

    Howdy,
Windows 7 Home Premimum 64 bit
    Intel Core i7 Q720 @1.60GHz
    Pavilion dv8t - 1200 Notebook PC
The reader worked fine for the first few months/year, however it then only started working for signing in & occasionaly for sites & gTalk. I was cool with that...annoyed, but cool. Oh, it also didn't work to sign in if I had to sign in again after the screen saver came up or if the machine went into hybernate.
Today I decided to see if there was an update or if I could get it working for something other than signing in. After installing what was most likely the wrong package, I uninstalled it through the Program  Manager.
I then shut down the machine, ran CCleaner (there were digital persona errors removed...about 8) & went to install sp50048 which I believe is the correct one for my machine.
During the install it tells me the folder/files already exist, (even though I uninstalled it) & ithey do, then at the instal phase "Registering Modules" I receive the following error:
    Error 1722
    InstallDPPassFilter_x64.4D0EAAF1_2D33_4FFF_AA08_6...
And then in rolls it back.
I turned off the biometric devices in the control panel, ran CCleaner again, shut the machine down completely, tried installing again & had the same issue.
I turned the biometrics on in the control panel & recieve this message:
"Biometric devices are turned on, however I'm told “Windows did not find any biometric devices on this computer. You might need to attach your device or install device drivers.”
I have tried a few methods from 'solved' under both simple pass & digital persona
Thank you all for reading & attempting to help.

    Howdy,
Thank you for your advice, however it did not work out.
    Addressing each point in succession:
I can not get Digital Persona to install, therefore I can not interact with it hence none of the steps in the Setup and Use HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader were available to moi.
Troubleshoot a Fingerprint Reader did not solve the issue, however I did go through the steps there so I shall describe my results in an effort to see if it helps home in on the problem.
All files used to update were pulled from the hp.com site using my Product Number.
Update the BIOS - BIOS was up to date
Enable Biometric Support (in BIOS) - Following the instructions it appears mine is always in the state: Enable
Check for Windows Support - Validity Sensor appears under Biometric Devices in the Device Manager
Update the Device Driver - (Had deleted the driver previously, so installed & updated) - Updated/Installed
Update the Access Manager - Attempted to install Digital Persona 5.1.0.175 A, but again during the install it gave me the same error (as my original post describes) & did not install.
As a final note, Windows does not see the reader in the Control Panel (large icons) Biometric devices even though it is turned on.
The reader worked fine before I tried to update it to a newer version & I still believe I installed an incorrect version of the Simple Pass software.

  • The same problem again with HP Simple Pass fingerprint reader after upfrading from Firefox 4 to Firefox 5. I have already installed HPSimPlePass 7.0.74.0 to fix the problem after upgrading to Firefox 4.

I have a HP Pavilion dv6 with a fingerprint reader. I had the same problem as many other people when upgrading to Firefox 4, : I couldn't use the HP Simple Pass to enter a website needing a username and password by just swiping my fingerprint. I fixed the problem by downloading the new HPSimPlePass 7.0.74.0. This fixed the problem and I was very happy. Since upgrading to Firefox 5 I have the same problem again, but I already have the new version of HP Simple Pass. How can this be fixed so that I can use this fingerprint scan feature again, or where can I download Firefox 4 again?

  • Alternative for HP simple pass (which doesnt work very well at all)

SO, after using HP simple pass on IE only bcause it doesnt work on CHROME...i upgraded to the latest HP simplepass....still doesnt work on chrome and now it functions very porly on IE too....it fails to ask to save/load passowords and if it does ask for a new site, if you enter the wrong PW, it saves it and doesnt ask to save a new second username like in the old version...SO I HAVE GIVEN UP ON SIMPLE PASS>...
are there any good (paid or free) alternatives????
    thanks

    Hey @envy15touchscre ,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand you're unhappy with the new version of HP SimplePass.
You should be able to restore the original version of SimplePass by using the HP Recovery Manager: Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 8).
I have not personally tried any other security plugins for browsers to make a suggestion.

  • HP Simple Pass appears to have created its own Windows Log on Password

HP Pavillion M6 1035 Lap Top
    Windows 7 64-bit
Hi, I recently bough this computer and reluctantly (cause I knew it would cause a problem) agreed to let HP Simple Pass help me manage my passwords about a month into ownership.
When I originally set up my computer I did not create any passwords for the log on (no need for me to).  If prompted I just clicked enter.  As far as I remember, before I set up HP Simple Pass, I was not prompted to log on at start up or I just clicked enter and- it loaded straight to my desk top.  I certainly never had to type anything.
After using Simple Pass, I am prompted at log on for a password, or to swipe a finger. I've been using the finger swipe just fine but today decided it was a pain and I just want it back the way it was.  That is when I discovered that Windows thinks I have a Log on password.  I have tried any and all passwords I know, including all the ones I entered into Simple Pass. I have tried just hitting enter, "password", you name it and it won't let me on.  I can still gain access with the finger swipe but in the settings for the software it does not show any information about Windows Log On.  (You can for example view other account passwords, just nothing about Windows Log On).
I tried accessing it through my device manager and I found where I can disable this, but alas, I need the Windows logon password that Simple Pass [evidently] assigned.
Can someone please suggest what is going on?  I am sure this will lead to a problem in the future and I am so sick of trying to fix broken computers (hence why I bought a new one).
    Thank you in advance

I have only seen this a couple of times and I don't have the answer...
I do not know how you managed to set up SimplePass without a typed in Windows password.  OK, having said that:  if you have done it, then it's done.
I would suggest that you get yourself over to AuthenTec, sign up for their forum, and ask this question in the context of the SimplePass (maybe omitting the dislike of the product since it is, after all, their means of being in business).
Why do this?  Because I don't think it should have happened.  From the few entries I have seen on the AuthenTec forum, Miroslav Buran (at AuthenTec) is knowlegable in his field and may be able to help you straighten this out before it causes problems.
Be sure to explain that you are using HP SimplePass and let them know the exact version of the SmplePass Software to get the best help.  Tell them your Operating System / bit, too.
When SimplePass IS used in conjunction with a Windows password (as intended), it works very well as a rule.
I am sorry your introduction to the tool was rocky and your experience has been less than stellar.
I would be very interested in hearing how this is resolved.  If I find anything helpful, I will post back to you here.
    Kind Regards,

  • Why my hp simple pass website login does not work with firefox latest version ?

I have the latest version of firefox version 16.0.1 and my hp simple pass website login does not show up like it worked in IE9.

I updated all the add ons already and I already reinstalled the HP simple pass after I installed firefox. I think that the new firefox is not yet compatible with the software (HP simple pass)

  • Firefox won't recognize latest update HP simple pass

I have tried everything and about just to say the heck with it and go back to IE9. But, I will ask.
WHY does Firefox refuse to recognize the latest upgrade to HP simple pass (Egistech) that is loaded onto my computer. It keeps saying the current 5.0 version is not recognized. Ok, I understand this, but I have loaded version 7.1 and firefox evidently cannot see it and keeps telling me 5.0 is installed.
Am I doing something wrong, or is Firefox just worthless and IE9 is the way to go?

Does Firefox find other plugins placed in that folder?
Note that you need to place a symlink to the libnpjp2.so file and not the actual file.

  • Hp Simple Pass Not working with Bank Accounts?

    Hi,
I bought the HP Envy Touvhsmart j-158ca, but i am having lots of trouble using this for loging into my bank accounts ( TD Canada Trust, Scotia Bank, Bank of Montreal..., any bank...). I cannot login to these banks at all. I contacte the Hp department, they asked me to perform a driver update, BIOS update, REcovery, Unistall/Reinstall Simple Pass,....... Has HP downgraded its new fingerprint reader from Digital Persona? The old Digital Persona used to login to any of these bank accounts flawlesssly, but now, its impossible with the new Simple Pass.
Can someone confirm if HP has really downgraded its finger print reader.
I want to return this laptop now, because this simple pass doesnt work anymore! for banks!.

I got an answer here:http://h30492.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Betriebssysteme-und-Software/SimplePass-und-Edge/m-p/363610#M34997 Edge doesn't support that kind of plugins at the moment, MS is working on it.
