Simple remote
Possibly not the correct forum for this but not sure where else to post:
Elderly relatives - one with vision problems - have an older LCD TV with a proper power on/off button on the top.
Newer TV has a tiny power button hidden around the back of the set that they wouldn't be able to see or use.
I'm looking for a very simple remote that I could attach to e.g. the TV's built-in stand that would supply a power on/off feature via IR (ok it would probably just put it in to standby) but I could make it look like part of the TV, which is important.
The nearest I've found that looks ok is the 'One For All URC8810' from a very well known shopping website where I could highlight the on/off button by putting a red sticker on it but even that looks a little too complex although I could easily make this look like part of the TV.
Ideally I'd just want something with a single button.
Any thoughts?
I use a "Belkin Conserve" - it has a physical power button and turns off after ~12 hours.
I then plug the TV into that, with the YouView box into into an "always on" socket to cater for recordings.

Simple remote connection using Cisco AnyConnect and ISR router
Hi all,
I am just wondering what the easiest and simplest method would be to make remote PCs (running Cisco AnyConnect) establish a VPN IPsec to a Cisco ISR (881/887, 1900s,2900s series). I used to use EasyVPN method (simple and fast to configure and no need for special licences other than crypto licence) but since Cisco VPN Client is no longer supported I had to resort to WebVPN which requires a licence depending on the number of clients to support (SSL licences for 10,20 users and so forth). I've read a bit about FlexVPN but I can't find an easy example to what I want to do. The closest is this one (FlexVPN and Anyconnect IKEv2 Client Configuration Example):
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/security/flexvpn/115941-flexvpn-ikev2-config-00.html
But that example makes use of RADIUS. Is there a way to make use of local database (users configured on the router) instead of RADIUS?
Basically what I am after is the following
- Remote users install Cisco AnyConnect to establish a VPN connection to HQ
- HQ ISR (880s, 1900s, 2900s) terminates that VPN connections and allows access to local resources (shared drives, applications...).Authentication method would be local database on the router. No need of RADIUS/ACS as this is for very small companies with no IT resources to maintain and configure a RADIUS/ACS server.
I think what I need is this AnyConnect to IOS Headend Over IPsec with IKEv2 and Certificates Configuration Example:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/security/flexvpn/115014-flexvpn-guide-cert-00.html
But the example is too highlevel for me to follow, basically I don't know how to generate such certificates and distribute it to remote clients.
Any help as to how to create such certificates or how to configure FlexVPN to just requiring the user to enter usr/pass (using local database not RADIUS nor ACS) would be highly appreciated.
Cheers
AlvaroIf you insist .. try this:

Windows server 2012 stops accepting simple remote desktop clients
Hi, I have a Standard Windows 2012 Standalone server as host for several Virtual machines ( f.e. AD and Exchange)because I do not use a keybord ar mouse for that server I always use simple RD to maintain that host.
Since sunday I cannot connect anymore. I checked Rd configuration, network and Client ( W7). Nothing to find why.
Se below the result of checking the host:
Windows PowerShell

So everything seems to be correct.
I do not have installed Remote desktop server/services etc. because ther is no need to.
I did not change anything on the host, no updates etc short before the problem occurred. Even not on the clients
Where to look to find the solution. On internet I could not find it, only that what I already checked.Hi,
Thanks for your comment. Sorry for late response.
How many users you are trying to remote desktop at a time?
I am asking here because from your troubleshooting you have done all your steps but seems you are moving out for more session connection and that’s why you can’t connect.
Because by default server only provide 2 remote session at a time and that is also for administration purpose. So if you are trying to get more than 2 remote session for your server then you need to install RD Licensing server, activate the server, purchase
RDS CAL (per user or per Device) as per your requirement and then configure them. After this you can get more connection.
Please clarify and review this point 1 under this KB 2477176 article (only for reference).
Hope it helps!
Thanks.

Best way to do simple remote desktop support?
As someone who occasionally needs to help friends and family, what is the most useful tool to support a mac remotely, over the Internet? I don't seem to actually be able to use any of the tools that come with Leopard, since I don't feel like manually configuring the remote routers of my friends, nor do I want to spend hundreds of dollars supporting them. Am I missing something with Apple's Screen Sharing, or am I correct in these assumptions?
Not sure I want to ask my friends to buy into iChat, since this requires a paid subscription to iMac, correct? Or will the free version support screen sharing?
I've tried using Timbuktu, but even this seems too hard for some of my family to fathom. It also costs lots of money.
Is VNC (ie. chicken of the VNC, etc) still the best way to go on this? Other ideas?
The assumption here is that the other person is a total novice, and can barely use the computer other than email. You would be suprised how many people out there are at that level...(g)iChat can use a free aim or jabber account and you have access to all of the features that come with it. Leopard and iChat/Screen sharing is going to be the easiest way to do the support you're speaking of

Simple Remote File Sharing over airport
Hi,
I have two macs: 1) iMac and 2) MacBook Air.
I have airport turned on, remote file sharing turned on.
I have created a new network on my iMac, titled: Ben's iMac, with both computers joined to the network.
I can successfuly connect via SSH from my iMac to my MacBook, using the command supplied in System Preferences/Sharing/Remote Login:
ssh [email protected]
However, I cannot connect from my MacBook to my iMac, using the equivalent command:
ssh [email protected]
The error I get is:
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
I have no idea how to proceed with this error message?arghhhhh norton!
Once I disabled norton's firewall I was good to go! -
NAT for remote access VPN clients
Hello,
I have a simple remote access VPN setup on a 2811 router. The remote subnet of the clients connecting have access to the local LAN subnet, but I am wondering if it is possible to somehow NAT those remote access users, so that they can go beyond the local LAN, and through the VPN routers outside connection, giving them access to other resources.
The remote subnet would need to be added to the NAT overload pool that the local LAN is on somehow, but since no interface is created, I am unsure where I would need to put "ip nat inside" if it even needs to be done, or if I am just missing something.
I guess really what I want to do is tunnel all traffic, and have that remote client IP translate to the NAT pool on the router for internet access.
Thanks.Have a look here for solution

Rmi remote reference lookup very slow in web start application
I have a little problem with the RMI communication in a web start test application.
It is a very simple program in which the client calls a remote object that returns a String.
Everything seems to be working fine when i'm running/debugging the client app in eclipse, but when i package my client project into a jar file and run it as a web start application (i'm providing the jnlp on a local webserver) the remote reference lookup takes about 15 seconds.
basically, what my client does is this:
Registry registry = LocateRegistry.getRegistry(address);
ServerTransaction st= (ServerTransaction) registry.lookup(name);
String result = st.test();
The server code looks like this:
String name = "ServerTransaction";
ServerTransaction engine = new DefaultServerTransaction();
ServerTransaction stub = (ServerTransaction) UnicastRemoteObject.exportObject(engine, 0);
Registry registry = LocateRegistry.createRegistry(Registry.REGISTRY_PORT);
registry.rebind(name, stub);
The server runs as a normal stand alone java application on my local machine as well.
And here the content of the jnlp file for the client application:
<resources>
<jar href="WSTest.jar"/>
<jar href="WSTestServer.jar"/>
<j2se version="1.6+" href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se"/>
<property name="serverAddress" value="127.0.0.1" />
</resources>
<security>
<all-permissions/>
</security>
<application-desc main-class="test.WSTest"/>
As i said, the whole thing works when run as a normal java application as well as with web start, with the difference that the remote reference lookup takes about 15 seconds with web start.
Can anyone tell me how i could go about this?Meanwhile, i tried the same thing at home on my xp machine (i use vista at work), and even though my test at home basically does the same thing (invoking a simple remote method that just returns "hello world") it worked pretty fast, contary to the 15 second hang on vista.
So i can't really say where the problem is...
I also found these two rmi properties
sun.rmi.transport.connectionTimeout (1.1.6 and later)
The value of this property represents the period (in milliseconds) for which socket connections may reside in an "unused" state, before the Java RMI runtime will allow those connections to be freed (closed). The default value is 15000 milliseconds (15 seconds).
and
sun.rmi.transport.proxy.connectTimeout (1.1 and later)
The value of this property represents the maximum length of time (in milliseconds) that the Java RMI runtime will wait for a connection attempt (createSocket) to complete, before attempting to contact the server using HTTP. This property is only used when the http.proxyHost property is set and the value of java.rmi.server.disableHttp is false. The default value is 15000 milliseconds (15 seconds).
Hoping it would help (totally clueless) i tried to set these as system properties via System.setProperty(...) to a lower value (if that even works this was - please correct me if i am totally wrong here) but it didn't help. -
Best way to remote objects...
What is my best option for hosting objects and accessing/instantiating them using Java SE and potentially other Java-based platforms (CDC, CLDC)?
What I've been trying to do so far is set up some system where a Java SE program can connect to an application server and obtain references/instantiate objects on the server and call methods of those objects.
The biggest struggle for me is understanding if JNDI is what I need to use for all this, on top of other questions.
Am I going about this the wrong way? Is there something else I should be doing?
I welcome any further questions or suggestions.Well...maybe, but also not quite?
Is there any way I can get a more specific response? Is there any way I can run a server that hosts instances of objects? What is the simplest way I can instantiate and communicate with remote objects?
Having a different stub for every class I create just seems like wasted effort and there are much more clumsy platforms out there that support very simple remote object & class features... -
Object not exported for Remote object in WSAD
Hi,
I have a few classes that extend and implement java.rmi.remote object. The JAR is placed under WEB-INF/lib of a web application.
I am using WSAD 5.1.1. When I start the server, it gives me the following error.
Can somebody make out anything?? Please help
Error Stack:

I tried creating the stub and the skeleton classes manually and added them to the JAR file but still I get the same error. The JAR is in the CLASSPATH of the server.
I also tried creating a simple remote object and tried binding it:

propertiesMap.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,"com.sun.jndi.cosnaming.CNCtxFactory");
propertiesMap.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "iiop://localhost:2809" );

Where do I put this remote??
I have a completely silly question. I am the proud new owner of a DV4-1435dx, and it came with a small simple remote. I'm wondering if there is a slot in the computer I can stick this in for safekeeping? From what I've read, there seems to be one, but I can't figure this out. Please help!
Thanks!
Message Edited by Kittenpixe on 08-13-2009 09:05 PMon my laptop (dv4-1222nr) theres a thing that covers the remote slot on the left side of the laptop. its right above the cardreader. push in then it should pop out. then that thingy is either garbage or keep it. personally id keep it. but thats were the remote goes

Need help setting up remote access please
I have a new server 2012 network with a server built specifically for remote access
I need to set up simple remote access to LAN pc's, published apps, and to manage domain remotely
this is only a test setup and I want some security but first want teh basics setup then I can lock down
I ran the wizards and believe most things are done correctly when I added the roles, and firewall is allowing access to that server.
when I try to connect from external I get the remote server's default IIS web page, no remote access options
is there a simple checklist to test services internally and test the web page access internally?
I am not sure what information you may need so please ask for any details that will be helpful
Remote Gateway, licensing, web access and certificates have all been configured using the wizards
David Sheetz MCPHi David,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Initially to remote access the application through RD Web we need to use https://servername/rdweb. Also please check the following setting.
In IIS: IIS Sites --> Default --> RDWeb --> Pages --> Application Settings --> DefaultTSGateway:
Set that to your RD Gateway access URL.
Then restart IIS.
Your RemoteApps will then be able to find the proper gateway inbound.
When you created your collection bring up its properties and make sure the URL is specified in RD Gateway settings too. This generates the correct settings in the RDP files.
In addition, please checkthis article for information. Also please see whether you
have configured RD RAP and RD CAP properly and try to uncheck the option “Bypass RD Gateway for local address” under deployment properties and verify the result.
Hope it helps!
Thanks.

How to remote control EyeTV being streamed to ATV3 via AirParrot?
Hi.
I use AirParrot to stream full-screen EyeTV to my ATV3. The ATV is in the living room and the desktop which runs EyeTV is in my office. I'd like to be able to pause, rewind and fast-forward stuff while watching tv in the living room.
EyeTV has an iPhone app called, surprise, surprise, "EyeTV" -- but that app seems to be geared more toward streaming EyeTV content from one's desktop onto the iPhone. I need simple remote functions on the Iphone to control the EyeTV software running on the desktop.
Does anyone have experience with this particular setup? Or any tips what remote app could be used on the iPhone for this?
All best,
TenchHi there,
You can do this across any network, as long as you have access on that network. I would recommend setting a static IP address for your Real-Time controller, as the poster above indicated. It would probably be a good idea for you to set this up with your IT administrator, as he/she may have dedicated IP addresses for you.
Other things to watch out for, especially in a company office, are firewalls and anti-virus software on your computer, which may inhibit the ability to communicate with the device in Measurement & Automation Explorer.
Talk to your IT department to make sure that you can be granted access to the network. This also applies to foreign networks; it is possible to connect to your controller on any other network, but you will have to work with your IT department in order to obtain access remotely. For example, you may need to set up VPN.
Best,

MooTouch - XBMC remote with touch support
mooTouch is a simple remote control / web-interface for XBMC-git, currently optimized for webkit browsers and touch-enabled mobile devices (Android/iPhone/iPad). It is written in object-oriented Javascript (mootools) and is still under heavy development. It has been tested on high-res devices only (800x480 / 1024x768 / 1440x900), so i don't know if there are any inconsistencies on low-res (480x320) phones - feedback appreciated. mooTouch is loosely inspired by wTouch, but differs greatly in code approach and extensibility.
Current features
Two modes: virtual remote and media browser
Simple theming support
Simple OSD for now-playing media
Simple history/bookmark support
Simple virtual keyboard
Todo
Chunking and sorting of data (needs XBMC fixes)
More extensive media information
More and better theming
...your ideas?
Installation
Download zip from here
Manually install on addons page in XBMC
Go to Network settings and set as default web-interface
Browse to http://xbmc-ip:/8080/
Usage
On startup you are in touch-mode, gestures are:
Swipe left or right to move horizontally (arrow key)
Swipe up or down to move vertically, continue swipe will repeat action (arrow key)
Tap to select action (enter)
Tap longer (hold) to open option menu (c-key)
Swipe Left then Right (one movement) to go back to previous menu (escape)
Swipe Right then Left (one movement) to toggle GUI (tab)
Tap on Input-button to open the soft-keyboard
Tap on media info (bottom panel) to show player control (m-key)
Clicking Browse enables library mode, TVShow mode is probably not working yet.
Bug reports and feature requests welcome!Spacenick wrote:It would be awesome if you could get it working on firefox mobile and/or the Nokia N900 browser, currently I can't control the video and the buttons look ugly. Also swipe doesn't really work.
For testing purposes you can just use the desktop version of Firefox looks pretty much the same
The styling will be pretty simple to fix, but the sliding and controls might be difficult without access to a (real) firefox-based mobile. For now i can only say that patches on that end are welcome, sorry..
edit: version bumped to 0.11, changes:
- Fix Firefox styling

IPsec remote VPN's got an IP and doesnt work
I am setting up a simple remote IPsec VPN with a ASA 8.4. All I want to do is the remote user can VPN into the ASA, from there, he can
browse the outside Web pages in the internet. and we'd like not to use split-tunneling.
the outside infterface is 192.168.1.155/24, which is inside our network and this subnet works fine to outside.
the pool for vpn is 192.168.0.0./24(please pay attention to the 3r octet)
I configured and the remote user can vpn in and get an IP from the pool. but it seems that he cannot do anything. he cannot ping anything.
I suspected the NATTing that i use.
Can you tell me what is configured wrong? I guess i am having confusion as what traffice need to be natted and what need not.
thanks,
Han

ITouch / iPhone 3G wired remote???
Does anyone know of a good simple remote available to control iPhone/iTouch? I have seen the Griffin Navigate which has had terrible reviews, iLuv IEA15 which I can't find any reviews of, only pre-release info (and iPhone 3G isn't supported), and there are a handful of other very cheap products all of which have had awful reviews of poor sound and build quality. I have had 7 iPods over the years and have always been able to control them by remote, yet now with my iPod Touch, which I regard to be by far the best iPod, I can't even get a decent remote for it! What is that about?! I know apple headphones come with them now (I have a pair and the remote is perfect - exactly what I'm looking for) but I want to use my superior Bose headphones!
I'm sure if apple released a wired remote it would fly off the shelves. So many people use other headphones.
Any ideas people?Fandang, Thanks so much for posting your reply ! I cleaned the socket with a cotton swab but that did not fix it. I then took a closer look at the headset socket. On the side you can see 3 tiny metal balls stick out. I carefully used a small pin and pushed each ball in a bit and that fixed it
I bought my iPhone from Italy (all are SIMlock free there) and it would have been a ***** to ship it back to Italy to get it repaired. Thanks again!
