Simple request to test a connection on an MS SQL Server
Hi there,
I've created some time ago a Connection Pooling class which works fine. Now I've added the functionality to test the connection through a simple SQL Request, before making it available through the getConnection() method.
I've read somewhere that a simple request like "SELECT 1" worked fine for MS SQL Server... I've tried this request in the Enterprise Manager and indeed it returns me one row and one column with value 1 in it.
- Is this SQL Request reliable for testing a connection ?
- What does it do exactly ?
- Is there maybe another request much better and maybe "faster" (if this is ever possible) than this one ?
- Will it work for any other Database vendor (DB2, Oracle, MySQL) ?
Thanks a lot for your replies and help.
PS : BTW I always award Duke Dollars, so please don't be afraid of not getting any in case you help me
See ya
Alan
It should be enough to test the connection is still up and working (with [...]'s observation that it doesn't work on Oracle). But there are other things you should also test, for example the auto-commit state of the connection (you don't want to be in manual commit mode, give the connection to someone which will run a query that might be rolled back by someone else later).
There are also a lot of other things you could test, which could be DBMS-dependent or not (e.g. try running "SET SHOWPLAN_ALL ON" on SQL Server and return the connection to the pool; the simple test will work in this case, but it might not work in other cases).
So there are a lot of things that could be tested. It depends on how much you "trust" the application you give the connection to. But I think querying the auto-commit mode (and rolling back if in manual commit and getting back to auto-commit) is also necessary.
Alin.

Help,
setup a new sql server 2012 on a windows 2012r2 server to replace old sql server 2005 on an old windows server 2003 machine. When i test the ODBC connection locally on the server it works fine, however when i try to connect via windows 7 client machine
i get the following error:
Connection failed:
SQLState:'01000'
SQL Server Error:67
[Microsoft]ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen
(Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQLState:'08001'
SQL Server Error:17
[Microsoft]ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied
I think it must be a permissions thing, I've turned off the firewall for now and still no difference, 've also made sure remote connection is enabled. I can connect to the other sql server in studio manager on the new machine however, i can't go do
the same in the old server, says:
cannot connect to hbfsqlpro1\hbfsqlpro1
Additonal information a network related or instance specifc error occured while establising a connection to SQL server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL server is configured to
allow remote connections. (provider:SQL Network Interfaces, error 26 - error locationg server/instance specified) (Microsoft SQL server)
the instance is def correct, as that is what i use to connect locally on the new machine and what it comes up on the studio manager on the new machine. STarting to pull my hair out somewhat, i'm sure it's something really simple!Hello,
You are trying to connect to a named instance. Make sure the SQL Server Browser service is started on the SQL Server computer.
Make sure TCP/IP is enabled.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191294(v=sql.110).aspx
Try to disable Windows Firewall or security software on both, SQL Server instance and client computer.
Test basic connectivity too. Try to ping from the client computer to the SQL Server computer.
Hope this helps.

How to connect musicdb to Microsoft SQL Server
hi..
i have tried musicdb example with mysql, but i need to connect it to SQL Server.
i have created a similar DB in SQL SERVER, however i am not able to create a user, similar to musicdbuser and musicdbpass in SQL SERVER.
Also in the Administrator console i followed these steps.
1. Applications->web Applications->deployed the war file-> OK
2.Resources->JDBC->Connection Pool->New->Name ='musicdb-jdbc-pool-SQLserver'->Resource Type='javax.sql.Datasource'->Database Vendor='Microsoft SQL SERVER'-> Next
added properties Values
databaseName musicdb(this is the database i created in MS SQL SERVER)
databaseSourceName musicdb(this is the DSN name i created in control panel->ODBC connections)
networkProtocol TCP
user sa (this is the username that i use to start SQL SERVER)
password syntel123$ (this is the password that i use with the above user )
portNumber 1443
serverName localhost
then i click finish.
if i say ping to this connection , i get success!!
3. then i goto resources->jdbc->jdbc resources->new->JNDI Name="jdbc/musicdb"->pool name="musicdb-jdbc-pool-SQLserver'"->ok
4. Then i click resources->connectors->connector connection pool->new->Name="mep/musicdb"->resource adapter="ds-jcr-connector-jaxrs"->next->finish
5 Then i click resources->connector resources->new->JNDI name="mep/musicdb"->pool="mep/musicdb"->ok
however when i hit the URL http://localhost:8080/musicdb/resources/albums
i get the following error
type : Exception report
message
description: The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request.

root cause: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class com.sun.mep.ws.vtms.util.ConnectionPoolHi,
I was able to create a JDBC connection pool for SQL Server successfully and will share the key steps, and was able to create a MEP user with an ECBO connection configured for the SQL Server; However, it looks like there is a "false positive" problem. Even though the user was created with the SQL Server connector whose associated JDBC connection pool passed the Ping test, doing a sync as that user changed the MySQL database album table and not the SQL Sever album table. MEP didn't give any error at all. I will bring this up with our engineers.
Here are the steps for at least getting GF JDBC connections with SQL Server working.
1. With MS SQL Sever 2005 Server Management Studio,
created a 'musicdb' database, a 'musicdbuser' user with password 'musicdbpass',
and added the 'album' table with
name (varchar(30) primary key, not null)
artist (varchar(30), not null)
date_published (datetime, not null)
rating (int, not null)
username (varchar(30), not null)
2. With MS SQLServer Configuration Manager, enable TCP/IP on static IP address
and 127.0.0.1 on port 1433 and restarted the SQL Server service
3. Downloaded Microsoft's 2.0 Driver for SQL Server 2005
4. Copied the driver sqljdbc4.jar to GF_HOME/domains/mep/lib/ext
5. Restarted GF
6. Login to GF Admin Console
7. Create Resources -> JDBC -> Connection Pool
name: musicdb_pool_sqlserver
resource type: javax.sql.DataSource
datasource class: com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDataSource
8. Create Resources -> JDBC -> Resource
name jdbc/musicdb_sqlserver
9. Go back to musicdb_pool_sqlserver and click Additional Properties then add
user: musicdbuser
password: musicdbpass
serverName=localhost
portNumber=1433
databaseName=musicdb
10. Click General tab and click Ping. Get Success! -
Hello,
I have configured BizTalk Services Hybrid Connection between Standard Azure Website and SQL Server 2014 on premise.
Azure Management portal shows the status of Hybrid Connection as established.
However, the website throws an error when trying to open a connection

Error while trying to connect to a remote SQL Server DB using multiconnect
As part of our business process, we need to connect to a SQL Server DB external to SAP.
We have done the following:
1. We set up an ODBC connection on our SAP sandbox server to the external SQL server DB.
Name: sdsdev
Connection string: sdsdev\sqlexpress2008
2. We tested the ODBC connection from within ODBC and it works perfectly
3. Using transaction: DBCO we have set up a DB connection known to SAP that we can use in ABAP to retrieve the data.
It was set up with exactly the same parameters as with the ODBC.
We used the following connection string so it would know to use the ODBC DBSL profile parameters, with the DSN name
being the same as defined in the ODBC: See below ...
DB connection: AR_INTERFACE
DBMS: MSS
User Name: ARTransfer
Password: ******
Conn info: MSSQL_DSN=sdsdev
4. We also made sure we installed the DBSL dynamic library (DLL) on the R/3 system server.
5. We ran a small test program to test connectivity ... as below ...
exec sql .
connect to 'AR_INTERFACE'
end exec.
right after the above command we check the system log for status. It failed with the following message:
B Wed Feb 09 14:40:40 2011
B Connect to AR_INTERFACE as ARTransfer with MSSQL_DSN=sdsdev

One more doubt.
I am using 10g Release 2 demo version.
whether it will support Hetrogeneous Services?
How to know whether a database supports HS or not?

Connecting Oracle(64bit) to SQL Server(32bit) with heterogeneous serv ODBC
Hi,
We are planing the migration of 32bit Oracle 9.2.0.8 (MS Windows Server 2003 EE SP1) to 64 bit Oracle 10.2.0.4 (MS Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition SP2).
We have tested the migration using export/import procedure, and everything passed ok.
The problem is because the database we are planning to migrate (32bit) using Oracles heterogeneous Services ODBC agent in connection to 32 bit SQL Server 2000. When we have tried to implement that on 64bit 10.2.0.4 oracle we always get the message:
ORA-28545: error diagnosed by Net8 when connecting to an agent
Unable to retrieve text of NETWORK/NCR message 65535
Then we looked up the metalink and find the document: Is Generic Connectivity Available On Linux Or Windows 64-bit Platforms ? [*ID 361676.1*]
Is there any way to make the connection between 64bit Oracle 10.2.0.4 and 32bit SQL Server using system DSN within the Windows ODBC Data Sources with choosing the SQL Server driver?
The option with Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC) isn't free.
ThanksHi everyone
As far as I am aware, you need to install the Discoverer EUL into an Oracle database and then use an ODBC connection to SQL Server. This is because Discoverer has hooks into the Oracle database and is looking for features that only exist in an Oracle database. If you are using an Infrastructure, which is mandatory when using 4i, you can use that database to store your EUL using an ODBC connection over to SQL Server.
I hope this helps
Best wishes

Get the connected users count from sql server using powershell
Hi,
I am working on SharePoint 2013,I am having SQL server 2012.
I want to get the Connected Users count from sql server using power shell.
Can any one please let me know how to implement.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Phani Kumar RSorry Tom, I dont like to hear "There is no way" :-(
There is always a way in computer to get what you need (at least it is good as Rule of thumb). I am not sure we will find it here (in a voluntary supporting forum).
Now we (or better the architect of their system) should think of the way :-)
Of course doing so in the forum, while we do know the system and only got a glimpse on what is needed, is not the best idea. I will point some issues which can be related to a solution. Those are not a solotions as it is but something we can use for a solution
once something look in the right way.
* A web connects counter is one of the easier thing to do. The basic idea is just to use the connect event and the disconnect event an adding 1 or removing 1 from the counter. This is best to do in the application using static variable as any way the second
the application is down the counter can be go to hell as we know there is no one connect (there for a counter do not use database usually). Using a web dot-net (or asp 3) application this is done most of the time using the global.asa/global.asax file, which
include the application and session events. for example using the method Session_Start
protected void Session_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) {
// Code that runs when a new session is started
* IIS have a build-in loging system where we can log each and every request/response or only logins users. There is lot we can do with this log files including data mining. Using small bulk insert script we can use the SQL agent to insert those logs to the
database and get the information we need.
* any web developer i want to believe know about the Fiddler application which we use to monitor traffic. A proxy is not the only way to to monitor traffic (it is not good for our case as this is in the client side), there are several option in the server
side.
* SQL trigger on logon can be use to get information on who is loging on and can be logging only specific source (like our sharepoint IP or any sharepoint application). This information (what is the application which connect to the server can be retrive
in several solution without using a trigger as well)
*** (I'll be brief ... I'm getting bored... probably the reader feel the same)
* using extended events and/or profiler we can monitor any connection and save the data or just remember it in shared (static) variable (this
blog show how to do it by the way). Again we can monitor specific application or use any filter in order to get only the sharepoint users
.... and i can continue for several days more :-) ...
"If there is a willing, then there's a way"
"If you can't do it, Then someone else probably can"
"Never say never"
I hope this help somehow :-)

How to establish a trusted connection with JDBC for SQL SERVER 2000
Hi!I am using jdk 1.4 and eclipse 3.3.
I create a servlet in eclipse with in-build tomcat.
When I run it ,it was working perfectlly has it was suppose to work.
In this servlet I connect to a sql 2000 database using jdbc-odbc bridge driver.
But when I tried to deploy the servlet on tomcat 5.5 manully on the same machine ,it gave me error saying
[Microsoft][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]Login failed
for user 'sa'
I searched around some post and found that ok ,I need trusted connection
But I have 2 Questions
1). Why was in eclipse I was able to connect to the SQL server and why not in the servlet which I deployed manully on tomcat.
2). How do I create a trusted connection with JDBC for SQL server 2000
Thnaks for your help in advance.Hi! duffymo ,QussayNajjar ,dvohra09 .
Thank for help.
The ideas are really great.
I am trying generate reports for my company.
When I used eclipse the code worked perfectly.
below is code which I used
out.println("Calling For Class Name<br>");
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
out.println("Calling For Class Name success Now calling database <br>");
1). jdbcConnection = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:SQLJasper");
2). jdbcConnection = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:Driver={SQL Server};Server=ServerName;Database=tempdb");
3). jdbcConnection = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:Driver={SQL Server};Server=ServerName;Database=tempdb","UID=UserName","Password=Password");
out.println("connecting to database success<br>");
I had tried to connect the database using this three way.
In 1st I tried using DSN name .
Next 2 self explainer for expert like you.
I used to 2nd variant to connect in eclipse and it worked fine.
I not an expert in java ,I just doing some research on jasperReport.
My best guest is that eclipse is using some library files of which I have no clue.
Thank's for your help,I appretiate it.
Once again thank a billion.
Sorry for the messy righting. -
Connectivity between SAP and SQL Server
Hi all,
how to take the SAP data which is in Oracle database on AIX Operating system to SQL Server database which resides in Windows for a portal?
Can anyone help on this?
Regards,
SathyaHEllo,
Hi
Please see the following:
1. Create an entry in Trxn DBCA for SQL Server in SAP, you are creating a database connection for the SQL server in SAP.
2. You use this connection, and write Native SQL stmnts...between EXECSQL...ENDEXEC to fetch the data..and then normal ABAP statements to put that data into your ztable.
TABLE DBCON Entry can be like this...depends on your External database..
CON_NAME Raj Logical name for connection
DBMS MSS Microsoft SQL Server
USER_NAME <User name> For SQL Server
PASSWORD <password> " "
CON_ENV MSSQL_SERVER=<server> MSSQL_DBNAME=<database name>
DB_RECO Availability type for an open database connect
FUNCTION z_houston_connect.
*"*"Local interface:
EXEC SQL.
CONNECT TO 'RAJ' AS 'V'
ENDEXEC.
EXEC SQL.
SET CONNECTION 'V'
ENDEXEC.
*- Get the data from MS-SQL Server
EXEC SQL.
open C1 for
select
l.loc_id,
l.loc_name,
a.acc_id,
a.acc_name,
d.person
from ho_loc_mast as l
inner join snd_acc_mast as a on l.loc_id = a.loc_id
inner join snd_acc_addr as d on a.loc_id = d.loc_id and
a.acc_id = d.acc_id
where l.loc_id = '001'
ENDEXEC.
DO.
EXEC SQL.
FETCH NEXT C1 into :wa-c_locid, :wa-c_locname, :wa-c_acc_id, :wa-c_acc_name, :wa-c_person
ENDEXEC.
IF sy-subrc = 0.
PERFORM loop_output.
ELSE.
EXIT.
ENDIF.
ENDDO.
EXEC SQL.
CLOSE C1
ENDEXEC.
ENDFUNCTION.

Cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance
I am trying to install Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Management.
I am getting the following error:
Setup cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance.
Ensure that the server name, isntance name, and, if speceified, port number are correct. If you are installing VMM remotely, ensure that remote connections are set up correctly, and then try Setup again.
I have installed the
Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 Command Line Utilities
but have not set up any SQL Server instances.
how should i proceed?
Edit:
The followign fields are configured:
Server Name: The name of the machine i am using
Port: <empty>
Use the following credentials <NOT ticked>
Instance name <empty> (the drop down is empty)

Are you able to connect with SQL server instance?
As per the given details looks, only client utilities installed and trying to create the database which needs SQL server.
Make sure you are able to connect with the "ServerName\InstanceName,PortNumber" and hope installing the system as per below article:
