Simple Silly Question I know I'm overlooking

Ok,
and pardon in advance for the "d'oh!" moment.
But, when creating my site in iWeb, and pubishing to a folder,
it names the folder the name of the site.
Thus the page URLs within the pages reference:
http://www.nameofsite.com/nameofsite/podcast/index.html
However, for my Name forwarding to work for my domain name
it needs to be:
http://www.nameofsite.com/podcast/index.html
So, I know I can take the pages into BBEdit and do a grep
search and replace and fix this, but what am I missing
in iWeb, so that when I publish to the folder, that
second "nameofsite" isn't in my URL tags?
or is it attaching that not in publish to folder,
but some other setting?
Thanks in advance...I know this is a simple fix...

its linking to the
rss
feeds and itunes feeds that is the main problem.
That's because those links are created based on the
standard iWeb site structure. Is there some reason
why you don't want to use that, and thereby avoid the
need for constant post processing?
My main reason is to get my feed validated.
Using the default iWeb way is returning either "404"
file not found errors in Feedvalidator, or it's not digging
deep enough and having a resolve issue of the domain masking.
If I post edit, and shorten the RSS feed link to
http://www.nameofsite.com/Podcast/rss.xml,
and upload it by moving the contents up, and not
the whole folder,as is the default,
feedvalidator.org finds the rss.xml
fine, and reports validity.
so I know the SIMPLER method of uploading the files is just :
drop the folder as is into my cox space
change my fowaring/mask to the "nameofsite" folder
BUT
my it affects my rss link and itunes (itpc) link this way,
in that they come back "404" and 'not valid link'.
Because it doesn't forward/mask properly when it comes to
rss.xml.

i know this is a silly question but i have a ipod and i was wondering if there was software that could be downloaded so that u can watch videos if u dont have an ipod which has that facility
    thanks

If you don't have an iPod video, you won't be able to watch videos.
iPodLinux does exist; however, it is only supported on 1st, 2nd & 3rd generation iPods (the non-clickwheel models) and does not enable videos

  • Silly Question I know but I'm a Newbie!

Besides Apple's own mail can the iPhone run any other email software e.g. thunderbird, etc.?
    Mark

I'm worried that when I collect emails on my iPhone she wont be able to collect those (same) emails via her powerbook (as I will already have collected them). My thought was; if I could use say Thunderbird on my iPhone and collect mail she would be able to collect the same mail via Apple's mail on her powerbook.
That's not how collecting mail works, really. The email client doesn't matter *at all*--it depends on whether the account is POP or IMAP and what settings are in use.
I have a POP account that is set up to download messages and then leave them on the server (this requires setting the POP settings in both Mail desktop and Mail iPhone that way). So all my messages get downloaded both in Mail and on my phone as new, unread, messages.
A POP account set to delete from server after downloading would cause the problem you cite. An IMAP account would download the messages everywhere, but would mark the ones you had already read as Read when your wife downloaded them, and if your wife deleted a message that wasn't for her, it would also get deleted for you.
Google POP vs IMAP for more, and see what your email provider offers, and check the settings.
Not such a silly question---it's a bit complicated.

  • VirtualBox VM - silly question!

Hi gang - apologies if this is not the correct thread.
Just got my first iMac and we need to use one bit of Windows software, so I installed VirtualBox VM and installed a Windows XP Home build.
Now this might seem a silly question, but does the virtual environment need anti-virus software?
I should know the answer to this - after all I managed to set it up correctly using an ISO disk image of XP Home and added Microsoft Money 95 (yes, 95!) using a combination of ISO images, shared folders with Mac etc - so why don't I know the answer to this simple question!?
Surely my thinking is correct - that a virus couldn't possibly affect a virtual environment, or for that matter, the Mac Host!?
    Cheers

With VM, it depends on what you do in it. If you are surfing the web and responding to email in the VM Windows, then you might need Anti-Virus software installed.
However, if you are just using it to get work done on a Windows-only program, the likelihood of you getting any malware is pretty slim. If you are transferring files between it and other windows users, then you have a higher chance of getting some form of malware onto your VM.
Being that your sole purpose is managing your financial information, I would definitely not risk it and install AV on the XP VM.

  • A somewhat simple security question......

If a mac running macosx has two separate user accounts, lets say one admin and the other a standard user, or both admins or both standard users.....
Is it possible for a hacked/penetrated account on one of the users to affect or read any info from the other user on the same machine ?
What application is in question; Safari lets say.....

    FLUIDNYC wrote:

So, no functionality. What about that java applet I need to run 10 hours a day. Do you think I should go out of business over it? Or all my QT movies? Or, deprive myself of Flash, so I can't view the content of websites?
So, lets say you browse www.thissiteisinfected.com and have everything uninstalled (see above), and your smart enough to browse the web using a "STANDARD" user account and not the "ADMIN" user account.
Running from a standard user buys you nothing and adds additional steps. If you want to download an app, before you install, you will get a dialog warn you "XXXX is an application you downloaded from the internet..." So, you still have to authenticate. And what about *all the apps that need no authentication to install?*
You tell me how this website will inject crap into your MAC with the settings above???
There is no way to FORCE CODE into your browser if everything is disabled.
Tell me how it can "inject crap" into my "Mac" admin without my complicity.
I have bumped into a rouge antivirus website while on my macbook using safari.
All of a sudden a popup stated i had spyware, i could'nt close the box/window, I had to do a FORCE QUIT on SAFARI to get out of that page. It pretty much hijacked SAFARI.
This is nothing that can harm you. It is annoying having to force quit over it, but that is all.
My safari download settings place things on my desktop, sure enuff, there was a .EXE file sitting on my macbooks desktop.
Sure enough, your Mac can't do a thing with it.
    NOTHING IS BULLETPROOF.
I agree but there are simpler ways to plant a rootkit you overlook, that have nothing to do admin accounts or ports. *The question is, who would want to?* Even if a black hat is randomly hunting for bank account numbers, social security numbers, credit card numbers, etc. he would pass up a UNIX based system with good protections in place for an easier target.
In short, in a home environment, I could never recommend running from a standard user. Especially if they are on a router and/or using OS X firewall. (The exception being if you have kids and want to use parental controls.) I have no idea how this mantra about using a non-admin account started, there is no place where Apple recommends this.

    Hello
Simple problem - don,t know how to solve it.
With Premiere CC when I try to do a selection (click... drag... release the click) very often it stop way before the end of the move I'm swinging the Magic Mouse. I taught that the mouse clicking was defective and went to get a new Magic Mouse after lots of frustration. Today, I have an edit to do it it does the SAME thing !!
    I was like ????#$%?&*(???
Opened all the lights and taught I've trow the new mouse to the garbage and was using the defective mouse again... no !! - ??
Actually, the bran new mouse is doing the same thing. What I understand after investigating on the motion and watching carefully my fingers !! -  is that when I click I have to keep my finger at the EXACT same place on the mouse... drag and release and it's fine. If I click by pushing on the mouse and my finder is moving of a 1/32th of a millimeter, it will release and my selection will be to redo. You can understand my frustration ! - 75$ later... same problem, but I know that if I click with about 5 pounds of pressure and trying to pass my finger through the plastic of the mouse, it you stay steady and make it !
The problem is that scrolling is enable while clicking and it bugs.
    How to disable it ??
Simple question - can't find the answer !

    Helllooo !?
sorry but the Magic Mouse is just useless with the new Adobe Premiere CC and since I'm not the only one but can't find answer this is really disappointing. This mouse is just fantastic and now I have to swap from a USB mouse to the Magic Mouse every times I do some editing. My USB mouse if hurting my hand somehow and I want to got back to the Magic Mouse asap. Please - for sure there is a simple solution !
    Thanks !!

  • Simple SQL question

I am a former FoxPro programer who has just started working with the JDBC. I have a quick question about table focus. (I am picking up the JDBC Pocket Reference guide tomorrow so this will hopefully be my only silly question)
How can I retrieve the entire contents of a table to the result set without saying
    SELECT * FROM TABLE
This seems this is a very slow alternative to just returning the entire table without going through the whole select process and returning a cursor filled with the data.
In FoxPro (ugh) you can say SELECT TABLE and that would bring the table into focus. Can you do this in Java or are you limited to an entire select statement by the JDBC driver?

I'm not a FoxPro programmer, so I don't know what the difference is between SELECT * FROM TABLE and bringing the table into focus. If it's a remote call to a database, that data's gotta come back someway. Those bytes have to cross the network sometime. I don't see the difference, but them I'm ignorant.
Are you saying that "bringing the table into focus" allows you to grab say the first ten records and then ask for the next ten when you're ready for them?
I'm not sure, but you might be talking about a scrollable ResultSet or maybe javax.sql.RowSet.
But I don't know of any way to avoid that SELECT.
Are you 100% certain that it's a problem? Have you timed the two and compared?
I have a funny feeling that FoxPro might be doing that SELECT * FROM TABLE behind the scenes and perhaps doing some nice caching to make it look fast.
Sorry I haven't been much help. Maybe someone who knows both JDBC and FoxPro will be able to answer with authority. - MOD

  • ATI Radeon X1900 model designation - a silly question

    Hi all,
I guess I reserved a silly question for for my very first discussions post!
I have a Feb 2007 vintage 2.66 Mac Pro with the ATI X1900 graphics card. When I ran software update on this machine today, it ignored the ATI X1900 XT firmware update recently posted by Apple. Upon querying my card in system profiler, I see it listed as simply "ATY,RadeonX1900"–no XT at the end. Also, both the "ATY" and the lack of a space after the comma are not typos on my part-that's exactly how they appear in system profiler-weird. It listed the device ID as: 0x1002.
Is the "XT" a more recent model of the X1900 series? I queried my serial number on Apple's specification page, and it said I should have a X1900 XT, but I suspect Apple updates these on the fly.
I really want to keep my drivers and firmware up to date, but I certainly don't want try to install an incorrect firmware update-yikes. Should I trust software update or should I manually download this update from Apple's site and install it?

Thanks, guys! This is really helpful information.
I'll go back and read the posts concerning this update. Having gone through the G4 "leaf blower" fan noise ordeal, I don't want to make my blissfully quiet MacPro any louder (and neither do my office mates).
I work in 3-D modelling and architectural graphics, and I've stepped up to the big display/high end graphics card world at the same time as my applications (formZ, SketchUp, Lightwave, CS3) are rewriting their software for Intel Macs. A few minor, but annoying, issues persist, and I was naivley hoping a simple firmware update would be the silver bullet. Yeah, right.
Maybe I'm just "pre-registering" my anxiety over Leopard...
Oh well. Chin-up! And thank you all for the quick replies!

  • Silly Question- PREVIEW - Leopard Rotating Pics

Silly question, but a little "bothersome" on this end.
Just upgraded to 10.5.4. In my previous OSX PREVIEW of pictures, if the pictures were rotated (from the camera), they showed up that way in PREVIEW and I had to manually rotate them. Now, Preview seems to show them in the proper position, but then when I send to family, they may be rotated in the wrong position. Some of my contacts aren't very computer savvy and don't understand how to rotate them on their own.
Isn't there somewhere in PREVIEW that I can turn off the automatic rotate so I can rotate them on my own.
I hope this is clear---it's a silly question, but solving it will make my life a little simpler!
    Thanks!
    job

The rotated picture business is bit confusing, so bear with me a minute.
When you shoot in portrait view your camera records everything the same as it does in landscape view, but adds a little digital note saying, in effect, "this picture is supposed to display in portrait." Some things can read the note, and some things can't. Both Finder and Preview can read the note and display the picture appropriately, Safari can't. If you want to see how those on other machines might see the picture, just drag it into an open Safari window.
Now--what to do. Because of the complaints of graphic pros the Mac OS no longer automatically applies the rotation to the actual pixels....you have to do it yourself. I usually do so in Photoshop, but if you use iPhoto you can EXPORT the photo, and then the rotation will be saved and the pixels altered.
If you want to use Preview try this:
    1. Open the photo and resave immediately, in the "Save as..." dialog box you'll see a line with a check box under the format information, that says "Use Exif Orientation Tag"--uncheck the box and save.
    2. Reopen the photo--this time it will display the actual state of the pixels, so it will be sideways
    3. Rotate so it is in portrait view
    4. Save again
If you drop the photo in Safari it should now appear "correctly" and will display anywhere and everywhere in the correct orientation.

  • Maybe a silly question...are unoffical OS (leaks) safe/secure to use?

So maybe this is a silly question....I have been trying to downgrade my OS after my TMobile phone somehow downloaded an ATT update (10.2.1.3014) that wasn't supported by the Tmobile network and caused all sorts of problems with the device.
After extensive work with Blackberry Support, I am told there is no way to "officially" downgrade back to the Tmobile supported version (10.2.1.2228).
This leaves the files or "leaks" (if you want to call them that), that are available in the forums through the autoloaders.  Obviously not knowing where those files came from, who posted them, or what, if any modifications have been made, I'm worried about security, malware, privacy, etc.
Are these things safe and secure to use just like an official OS would be?  Is there anyway to verify?
Thanks in advance for your help.  Sorry if its a silly question.

    Hello,
The autoloaders have no malware or viruses... at least I haven`t heard about any of that. I have used Autoloaders before and the only thing I can suggest is to make sure you download the proper files (OS and radio files) for your phone. In any case case, make sure you do a backup.
If you have more questions, ask away.
    Good luck

It is a feature to discourage the theft of iPhones by making them useless if resold. It's not going anywhere. It's simple: just don't buy a phone until you make sure that the activation lock has been disabled.

  • 2 silly questions what is boot camp and do I need it? & How to transfer PC

Okay, I've just ordered my first mac it's a 17" 1.83 refurb iMac, I've noticed a lot of stuff about boot camp, what is it? Does it allow me to transfer my old pc files to my Imac? The only files I will be transfering are pictures and music files can anyone tell me how easy or hard this will be, Thanks again

    There are no silly questions.
Boot Camp (which is still a beta until Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard' comes out) allows you to boot your Intel-based Mac in either Windows XP or Mac OS X. It will make an extra partition on your internal hard drive on which you can install WinXP SP2.
To transfer you PC files onto your Mac you will not need Boot Camp. There are several ways to do it, but perhaps the easiest is to burn you files on a CD-R or DVD-R and insert the disc into your Mac.
For your music files: start iTunes and import all music files from your CD/DVD (File menu > Import).
For your pics: start iPhoto and import all your pictures from the CD/DVD (File menu > Import in Library). iPhoto is really the best way to keep track of all your current and future pics and share them with anyone.
Good luck and welcome to the Mac world!
