Simple slideshow transfer from Iphoto losing aspect ratio

I have seen other posts on similar subjects, but covering importing and what appear to be more complex uses of the mac suite.
I am a novice and so have used the software in the 'out of the box' settings. I have created a slideshow and when I export it to iMovie they always end up thinner.
I have tried changing the iMove preference to turn off automatic CV pillarboxing and Letterboxing as one of the chains suggests but makes no difference.
Any simple answers or do I need to start again and build the slideshow from scratch in iMovie
Thanks in advance

Sam, you're saying that your iPhoto-exported movie arrives in iMovie with black bars along its left and right sides, right?
The problem, I suspect, is not with iMovie but with the settings for the slideshow in iPhoto. Go back to the slideshow in iPhoto, click on the Settings icon at the bottom of the Slideshow window, then turn ON the checkbox "Scale photos to fill screen".
Now export it again. This movie should import better to iMovie.
If I've not understood the problem, please say again.
I am a novice and so have used the software in the 'out of the box' settings.
You are not alone. You're banging your head against a wall that bloodied my forehead for two days a year ago. It's not because you're a novice; I've spent years with this stuff.
Sometimes Apple's "simple" user interface isn't as intuitive as it claims to be, and this is one of those times. The QuickTime environment -- the software behind all the iApps -- is arguably the richest, most complex environment on the Mac, offering tons of possibilities. Over-simplification of QT functions in apps like iPhoto and iMovie sometimes makes it hard to get things done the way you want. You often have to rely on experimentation to figure out how Apple has implemented QT in this particular situation. And occasionally, it's crucial to borrow the sharp machete of a good book author to cut through the thickest brambles.

  • Iphoto bad aspect ratio

    Hello,
IPhoto modified some of my pictures giving them a bad aspect ratio. Here is one of them. It's normally a portrait picture.
I'm sure that concern a corrupted Aspect Ratio data in the picture. Do you know a way to correct them ?
    Thanks in advance,

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database

  • Removing black bars from youtube/altering aspect ratios for youtube

How do you get rid of the black lines on the vid on youtube using I Movie 08? I have tried using the crop options in I movie, and still cant get rid of the back lines above and below. The cameras aspect ratio is 4:3 and using crop options of “fit” or “done” does not fix it. For example, here’s an exercise vid I did.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWgFDVI8Xs4
What is the cure for this? I notice when the vid is in the even library it’s in 4:3 as the source vid from the cam but is converted to 16:9 when moved to the project library. Is there any way to prevent that or convert it back to 4:3? I had thought the crop options in I movie would do the trick, but it does not from what I can tell.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
Is your project 4:3, you set this when you create your project. You can check this by looking at the project properties from the file menu.

  • Slideshow music from iPhoto

I just got a 60G iPod Photo and it's great but when I select Slideshow Settings>Music>From iPhoto I get silence from the iPod when I play a slideshow. It works fine if I select anything other than "From iPhoto". I have made sure the song is on the computer and the iPod and it is selected in iPhoto. I am running 10.3.9, iPhoto 5.0.2 and iTunes 4.7.1.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

David- I feel your pain, but the function seems to be nothing but nonsense:
The only way to add music to pictures in iPhoto is by creating slideshows (I have not found a way to add music to albums - have you?).
The only thing you can synch to iPod is albums, not slideshows.
    Go figure.
The menu item "Music - from iPhoto" just does not make sense.

  • Exporting From HD and aspect ratio

    Hello, all:
Using Final Cut Express I am trying to export a sequence shot in HD to a .mov file. I have tried the presets, and they distort the final output, squished in from the sides, to fit a square aspect ratio. I have tried selecting the 720x480 aspect ratio in the custom settings, but it still happens.
Can you all give me a step by step to output a moderate sized (50 mbyte/minute) quicktime video from HD that does not have this aspect ratio distortion?
    Thanks,
    Eric Siegel

    http://www.fcpbook.com/Video8.html
For HD material you want to export in the same ratio as 1920x1080 or 1280x720 or 640x360.

  • Burning a slideshow directly from iPhoto

    Folks,
I am wondering if it is possible to burn a slideshow to a DVD directly from iPhoto, or if you have to export the slideshow to iDVD and then burn?
Secondly, I tried to export to iDVD last night and when the export was done, I received a message saying that the music I chose could only be played on authorized computers? This does not happen to me when I use iMovie to make a slideshow.
    Thanks,
    Joe B

    Hi,
I have the same problem but I managed to burnd the slide show to a DVD but the sound and the changing of the pictures was not as the one on the iPhoto slide show. If you get an answer to this problem, please copy me into it.
    Thanks a lot from Sweden.

  • No Sound in QuickTime when Slideshow Exported from iPhoto

I'm currently using iPhoto 2.0.1 and QuickTime Player 7.1.3. When I export a slideshow from iPhoto to QuickTime, a '.mov' file is created. When I play it, I can view the slideshow but there's no sound. Does anyone know why?
    Here's how I export a slideshow...
    1) Create an album
    2) Add pictures to the album
    3) With the album selected, click 'Slideshow'
    4) Check/select 'Music'
    5) Select 'iTunes Library'
    6) Select a song
    7) Click 'Save Settings'
    8) With the album selected...
File > Export > QuickTime > check/select 'Add currently selected music to movie' > Export
By the way, the music in my iTunes library has been Imported from CD's I purchased and is in the format .m4a. Also, the music plays when I view the slideshow within iPhoto.
    Thanks!

    Robin,
you have to find a way to "mend" the 4 songs together in iTunes, which I think can be done when you are importing from a CD. Essentially all 4 songs are one song.
Another way to do this, and that is what I do all the time, I export many slideshows.
This envolve the use of QT pro. And you have to cut an paste.
For simplicity, say you have 240 pics and you want to put 4 songs of 1 minute each. It would be 60 pics per minute (assume that the disolve, does not play a role in time displayed). Assume you put 1 sec per slide.
1-find the ending point of the song on the QTslide show.
2- move the right cursor (small triangles usually sitting below the time bar) to the end of the song
3-Notice which picture the song ended up on.
4- Command+N and Command+V will paste the 1st song along with the 60 or so pics, (depending on display time per slide)
Now go back to iPhoto, and select picture 61 to 130 (instead of 120- because the song could be longer that it take to display 60 or 62 pics.
Select a new song #2, save settings bla bla bla
Then export phots 60-120 with song #2.
1-Open this QT file #2, and move the right "triangle" to the far right.
    2-Command +C (copy)
Go back to the "previously pasted slideshow #1" and position the cursor at the end of the show- to the far right
3-Command+V paste, the 2nd portion of the slide show #2 at the end of Slide #1.
Repeat the process untill you are done.
When done, save the file as a "self contained" file. That is very important.
Sure enough you end up with a disolve to black, and fade in between each song, but that is the compromise, and it is not too bad to watch after all.
It may seem complicated, but once you do it once or twice, you will do it with your eyes closed!
I think there is also another way to do this, which would envolve exporting all the pics to QT in one shot, then cut and pasting the separate songs in the QT file using a similar method I described above. I tried in the past but was not successfull. I'm not too well verse with the Editing in QT.

  • Create slide show - help needed to transfer from iPhoto

I am an editing novice but a skilled Mac user with a programing background. I am trying to create a 20-30 minute slide show of approximately 250 photos to run in the background at my son's bar mitzvah on 61 inch plasmas. I have selected the photos and can produce something very basic in iPhoto. I would like to improve this in the following ways and hope Final Cut Express is the best too:
    1) Ability to custom configure Ken Burns effects to the proper faces, etc, and hopefully add rotation of my choice.
    2) Be able to create PIP and split screen effects. Concepts include having 2-4 photos in field simultaneously
    3) No need for sound - this will run in background
    4) Need to format photos to fit monitor best - assume this gets done best in iPhoto
Is the best thing to do to export a QT movie from iPhoto? Is there a better way to get the photos into FCE? Is there a good primer for slide shows in FCE either on web or for sale?
Sorry to pound the questions, but I did not see a direct response on the forum.

I just had to do a slide show with 190 pictures. I created it in iMovie so applying the Ken Burns would be less work, yet I still had control over the direction of travel. When I was done, while in iMovie, I exported as movie as the first choice under export (I can't think of the correct term) and selected the large option when it gave me the choices. It was exported to the desktop as an MP4 and I easily imported it into FCE with no loss of clarity. I also tried to export it as a Quicktime movie to see if it would work also and I was also able to import that into FCE. IMHO iMovie is the way to go for simple slide shows. Hope this helps.
PS. If you need 30 minutes of video, iMovie can easily adjust you photos. I know you said you didn't need music, but try this. Place all your photos into iMovie. Then place X number of songs, any songs, into iMovie until you have 30 minutes. I believe iMovie sets all clips at 4 seconds. You can then add cross desolve transitions between every photo buy going into project settings and clicking on the box to add dissolves. Then set the length of disolve between .5 and 1 second. You then call tell if you have enough photos to fill 30 minutes by seeing if the photos totaly fill up the music (highlight in iMovie)if you are to short, make the photos 5-10 seconds. If you are too long just make them shorter. When you import into FCE, just delete the audio track.

  • Help with slideshow & labeling from iPhoto and Apperture on iMac

I have an extremely long slideshow of photos on iphoto which is causing me not to be able to download it to a DVD. I was told that if I put it in Apperture, I would be able to make the DVD from there. Can someone please help me with this project? I also need to know how to insert names over the photos, or at the bottom of each one. I did this for a family reunion and promised everyone a DVD and now it's 6 months later and I still don't have them ready. Thanks in advance for your time and assistance. D

Export the slideshow from iPhoto, that makes a movie of it.
Do you want to use this DVD in a domestic DVD player? If so, then the disk will have to be 'authored' to make it the correct form for that. If you have iDVD then that's the app you use. However, iDVD is no longer developed or distributed by Apple. You may be able to get it on an old iLIfe install disk.
    Other options:
    Burn: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/21992/burn
    Toast: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/6351/toast-titanium
But there are lots of others too. Search on the App Store or MacUpdate\
You don't need Aperture for this.

  • No music on slideshow imported from iPhoto

    Hi,
I posted the following question in the iPod discussion area and no one responded, so figure I'd give it a try here. I was able to import a slideshow from iPhoto 5.0.4 to a 20GB iPod Color. The slideshow works just fine, but am not getting the music I heard when watching the slideshow on my Mac. BTW, I did go under Settings on the iPod and select music->From iPhoto. Not sure if it makes a difference, but the music on my slideshow is the iPhoto default (Bach "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire"). Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ron

    Hi,
Try turning the music off in the slideshow (Select: Music icon in bottom right of window, unselect play music during slideshow).
    Export the slideshow again (sorry)
Add your play list for the slide show to your ipod.
Add new slide show to your ipod
On ipod go to: Photos:Slideshow settings: Music: select your playlist from the list.
The music should play when you statr your slideshow.
    Hope this helps!

  • External edits (PS CS 6) do not transfer from iPhoto to Aperture

I am sharing my main Aperture libary between Aperture and iPhoto. It works well, only external edits are problematic, when done while browsing the library in iPhoto.
When I open the library in iPhoto and edit a jpeg photo in Photoshop CS6, I can see clearly the edited version in the browser, for example, after applying the oil-paint effect in CS6.
But in Aperture the edits do not show: After switching from iPhoto to Aperture the externally edited image is still showing the original version, no indication of an external edit in the badges, no new version generated.
But when I drag the preview from the browser, the preview is showing the edits done in Photoshop CS6.
I suspect, because iPhoto is not creating a new quasi master like Aperture, and the external edits are witten to the preview of the edited version, the only way to access the external iPhoto edits will be by exporting the preview.
I tried this, because I wanted to avoid the creation of tiff or psd files as quasi masters, when doing external edits on  jpegs, but when the edits are invisible in Aperture it will be no great help.  Now, is that a bug or a feature?
    Aperture 3.5.1, iPhoto 9.5.1, PS CS6

So, to clarify, what's happening is that the Thumbnails are not updating to match the changes made in Photoshop?
Where is your Library? On your start-up disk? On an External? If on an External, what format is that?
This might be a form of corruption, try Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
Maybe I need to reset the Preferences?
Perhaps? Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
Is it because I a have accumulated about 5,000 images in my library and the program is maxing out?
iPhoto 09 is good for a 250,000 images so you've got a little headroom yet...
    Regards
    TD

  • Slideshow imports from iPhoto - missing/distorted images.

When I try and create a slide show using images from iPhoto some images are missing and others badly distorted, I have tried different settings but what I want is manual with dissolve. This used to work with iLife '06 and Tiger (10.4.10).
Any ideas? I really need for this to work.

  • Exporting HVX to QT, losing aspect ratio

Okay, so I shot a music video on 720P24N with the Panasonic HVX-200. Everything looks great. I try and export to a web sized QT file and it looses the aspect ratio. It squishes the image into the 4:whatever standard broadcast shape. I've tried to use the custom size feature and manually punch in the 960 x720 and it still won't play the image correctly. Further, the file itself says that my size is correct... 960x 720. I've tried to go into my quicktime settings to change how it plays the file but again, nothing has worked. Any ideas?

960x720 is the dimensions of the clips already. They are anamorphically squeezed. What you need to do is export them as 1280x720.
Except, not really. For the web you'd at least half that...640x360. That will get you a normal 16:9 looking clip.

  • How to change from 16:9 aspect ratio to 4:3

I've created a movie in iMovie09 using still photos that I cropped to the Widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. It looks great, but now I want to change it to Standard 4:3. I can do this under Project Properties, but then when I play it, the right and left sides of the photos have been cropped off. It wouldn't be so bad except that many of this photos have text which spans the width of the photo; the sides of the text are cropped off. What I'd like to do is have the movie show in letterbox with black at the top and bottom, and have the entire photo displayed.
Any suggestions? I could go back to the beginning and recreate the movie with the 4:3 setting, but that will be very time-consuming. There ought to be an easier way.

You have already taken the first step, which is to switch to 4:3 in Project Properties.
Now, select a still and open the Rotate/Crop/Ken Burns Tool (on the middle bar). It sounds like it is set to "Crop". Change this setting to "Fit".
    Repeat for all photos.
You can Edit/Copy the first still (after making the change). Then select the rest (using command-click or Edit/SelectAll). Then Edit/ Paste Adjustments.

  • Simple slideshow transfer required

I am sorry to to ask but I am struggling. I have a great slideshow which I have done in iPhoto and just want to copy it to a DVD disc and leave it running in a DVD player attached to a TV at a family party. I tried via iDVD but it did not come out as expected having never used iDVD before. I am a real iMac novice. Waiting for the iLife 09 books to be printed.

Well I failed to get this to work after following Mt Toads kind instructions. I know it was me as I struggled to follow the sequence. I thought I had copied the iphoto slide show, moved the file into the first blue pane. I managed to find how to do the loop and then I thought I had made a Disk Image. However when I copied this to the desktop and then burnt it to the DVD, it did not run. When I loaded the DVD in the home DVD player is said Disc Unknown. It also did not run on the iMac.
In fact I think I had really failed to actual copy any data to the Disk Image. I had a folder MygreatDVD.img on the desktop and when I clicked this it produced another folder which was what I then burnt. They showed a audio file and an image file but to be honest I forgot to check the info on these before deleting them.
I thought I would try again when I get back from work on Thursday. I know it should be easier then I am finding it. Any additional idiot guides would be helpful. Cheers
