Simple sorting by track number

Hi. I have a little annoyance with the way things are sorted.
If I'm viewing an album, the magical first column (with no name) shows a 1 to n playlist number. It does not seem to be possible to sort by this number, and the tracks are force sorted according to one of the other 'named' columns.
I have have to enable the 'track #' column and sort by it, rendering the first column useless. How can I
a) sort by the un-named column's number
or
b) add the 'track #' column, sort by it, and disable the un-named column.
This image hopefully shows what I mean:

Thanks for any help.

Go to the location of the track on your PC, not iTunes, right click on the track and go to PROPERTIES, then DETAILS, and then unde MEDIA click # (track number) and make sure you set the track numbers in order. Its too bad you have to do it individually for all tracks but there has got to be a way to set track numbers for all tracks with one click. Okay, so as long as all the track numbers are in order 1,2,3... or however you want them to be because thats how iTunes sorts them. YOU MUST do this before you create a playlist in iTunes and if you already did, you may have to delete all tracks and follow the instrustions and then load em up in iTunes again. Hope this helps.

  • How to solve the problem: ipod doesn't  sort tracks by track number

    After lots of attempts, I think I've found the solution that solves this problem (is it a BUG of the ipod software last update?).
    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
    ===================
    For some albums, ipod seams to be not able to sort songs by track number, no matter how you order the tracks through itunes.
    This problem normally appears in albums that are NOT of the same artist (ex: soundtracks).
    Once you upload on ipod (for ex.) your soundtrack, it can happen, when you browse the ipod in the following way:
    (from the main menu): music -> albums -> <name of the album> -> <tracks list>
    that the tracks list IN THE ipod appears NOT sorted by track number.
    SOLUTION
    ========
    This problem is due to a particular tag, "album artist": try to DELETE what is written in this tag for each song that doesn't appear in the correct order.
    For those that are not aware about itunes:
    1) open itunes when your ipod is connected to the pc
    2) select a song ON THE IPOD that you notice is not in the right position
    3) right click the mouse on it and the select "get info": a popup appears
    4) select the "info" tag on this popup
    5) delete what is written in the text area named "album artist"
    6) click "ok"
    TEST AND REMARK
    ================
    Another suggestion, useful to test the result of this action through itunes.
    It seams that ipod software makes a specific sequence of queries: when you select a specific album on your ipod, first it groups songs by album name (it seams a nonsense, because the songs that belong to the same album have, of course, the same album name), then by "album artist" and only at the end by track number.
    So, if you delete the content of the tag "album artist", automatically ipod should sort all songs by track number.
    Therefore, try to make this test: in itunes, in the ipod section, click on the colum "album" in order to sort your album by album name.
    If the songs appear in the right order (that is, sorted by tracks), your should have solved the problem.
    Hope that this will help the ones who have this problem.

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discusions.
    Is the album marked up as an audiobook by any chance?

  • Why does itunes 11 not sort the songs properly unless I am in a playlist when there is no track number

    I have lots of audio files that have names in the format of a Date (eg. 2012 01 23) with no track number.  The old I tunes always sorted them perfectly.  Now they are all out of order when I look at them under anything but if they are in a playlist.

    Did you try Alt/View/View Options...   ?

  • Sort by Artist - Album - Track Number

    I could use some help pls. I have recently reinstalled and now all of a sudden iTunes is acting stupid. I want to sort by Artist -> Album -> Track Number. What is happening is it's sorting by Artist -> Album but the Track Numbers are backwards (listed 10 to 1).
    Before you say it, it is NOT a tag issue!! I just spent the last two hours staring at a single album. Every instance of artist/album artist/disk x of y/year/genre/etc/etc are IDENTICAL. Every instance of everything that is not unique is absolutely identical!!
    As a side note...does anyone know why Apple refuses to fix the bug in iTunes where mouse wheel scrolling has never worked?
    Thanks...

    Click on the Artist album header.
    In the right side of the Artist album column header is a small triangle.
    Click it so it points up. This will sort the albums track 1 thru track 10.
    If the trianlge is pointing down, it will sort track 10 to track 1.
    I click Artist with the arrow DEscending.
    It's a triangle, not an arrow. The top of the triangle is smaller and the bottom is larger, just like the sort. Or vice-versa.
    This used to automatically sort each Album under each Artist and within each Album the Tracks would be sorted numerically (1->10).
    No, it has never worked as you suggest.

  • Update 10.1 - Cannot sort by track numberTrack number header

    My album tracks are now all sorted alphabetically.
    I try to click the track number header and it doesn't work.
    All the other headers work, but not the track number header.
    So now all my albums have their tracks in the wrong order and I can't get them back to the normal track order.
    Is that a bug in the new update?

    sorry, I fixed it

  • Tracking Number Issue

    I placed an order on March 16th and received confirmation of my order on the same day and saw that my estimated delivery is March 27th (I used free shipping from BestBuy). I later received an email on March 18th informing me that my package had been shipped. Along with that email I received a tracking number for that order. I signed up for automatic cell phone text notifications for shipping as well as email notifications for shipping. I've used the UPS tracking number link and manually input the tracking number provided on the UPS website everyday since then. Every time I use the tracking link provided in the shipping confirmation email or input the tracking number on the UPS website I receive the following message "UPS could not locate the shipment details for your request. Please verify your information and try again later." Now I am aware that it can take up to 48 hours for a tracking number to activate but as of now it has been 3 business days since it shipped and still the number is not active nor have I received any notifications of shipping in form of text or email since shipping confirmation. There are still several days left until ETA/ETD but I would like to sort this situation out now so that we have time to deal with any problems should they arise. I would greatly appreciate a helpful reply!

    Hello FlyPlatinum,
    Placing an order online with us should be a simple and worry free experience. I'm sorry to hear that your tracking number may not be showing an update, and is reflecting as invalid. You are correct that this occasionally occurs within the first 48 hours of the tracking number being generated while the system updates.
    Using the email address you registered with the forum, I see that the item shipped on 3/18/15 but that the tracking information appears to be invalid. With that said, if the item doesn't arrive by its current estimated arrival date (3/27/15), please let me know so that I may look further into this to see what options we may have for you.

  • How do I get rid of the Track number in a song's name?

    So I just got a new windows computer and transferred all my songs from my old windows machine to this one. Unfortunately, a lot of the files have numbers in front of their name, in fact almost all of them do (I'm talking about the actual file in their respective folders). What puzzles me is some of the songs, once added to itunes, have the track number in front of their name in itunes, while others do not. I started to rename each song, but that is taking way too long. Do any of you know of a way to select a large group of songs and modify each name only a little with out changing each one to the same thing?  I pretty much have to delete 3 spaces before each song. Any suggestions would be really helpful.
    P.S. the sort cuts for play/pause/skip/reverse only work for windows media center, which really isn't great. When I try to use them they will literally launch windows media center. is there a way to change this so that they will work for itunes?

    Do a hard reset by pressing the button on the face of your Ipad and the on off switch.

    With using any version of iTunes, whenever I import songs into my library using the "add to library" function, iTunes adds those songs in songs' alphabetical order. This is pretty annoying since it does not preserve the logical track number or even the album sort order (for example when adding 2 albums stored in a unique folder). Anyone has any ideas ? Been stumped for a while....!!!

    hi i had the same problem today when i updated my itunes to latest version. however, i have just found my songs in the 'itunes media' folder. this was accessed through 'my music'  then keep clicking through until you find itunes media and all my library songs were in there and i then just added these files to my library and all were restored however, i have lost all my playlists but at least my 700 songs are back. very dissapointed with apple that they have let this happen with their latest update, the previous version was miles better than this one . hope you find them. stevo

  • Playlist Order vs Track Number

    Does anybody know of a way to have a playlist play tracks in a certain order without changing the track number? I don't want to do this because some of the tracks in my playlist are from albums and changing the track number in the playlist obviously affects the source album as well.

    Just click the first column heading to sort by number (not the track number column). You can then drag the tracks around to setup the play order and they will play that way.

  • REG: Tracking Number Generation from Handling Unit Number

    Hi All,

  • Itunes 11.1.5.5 automatically updates all sorts of track info when I play tracks

    I have a massive library, and historically itunes has been shaky about the way it orders things when you have inconsistent info across albums (album artist, track number info. year of release). I keep my library to where they only have track name, artist name, album name, and track number, but with this version when I play any track or even right-click a track and hit "get info", it automatically fills in "album artist", album artwork, year of the release, and any other info they can find. I've looked all over the software to try to figure out why, but there doesn't seem to be any option to turn it off.
    So is there either a version that will NOT do this (I haven't tried installing the latest version yet but imagine it would have the same feature and I hate updating itunes), or otherwise is there a way to turn it off?
    Thanks all.

    Now it's actually changing the name of the artist and track names, so now if I'm playing music with the music sorted by the artist it will only play the one song, and then skip to whatever alphabetically comes next to whatever itunes decides the artists name should be. So unbelievably annoying, why in the world would this feature ever be incorporated into software, let alone without an easily available turn off option.

  • Reversing the "avoid track-number in filename" setting ?

    Strange question, I know, but....
    Been doing the changes to the iTunesPrefs.xml file as discussed in many threads:
    </data>
    <key>create-filenames-with-disknumber</key>
    <data>
    AA==
    </data>
    with some success, and iTunes was working away reorganizing my library without the filenames prefixed with track numbers, as I wanted.
    However, WinXP being Windows, crashed in mid-reorg and iTunes did not complete its reorg. Upon rebooting and fixing the basic iTunes preferences again, iTunes now seems to ignore the setting altogether, and then some: it reorganizes without the track number or even the artist name in front of the track title!
    So I end up with:
    S:\Our Music\Elvis Presley\Elvis in Concert\Are You Lonesome Tonight.mp3
    S:\Our Music\Elvis Presley\Elvis in Concert\Can't Help Falling in Love.mp3
    instead of:
    S:\Our Music\Elvis Presley\Elvis in Concert\Elvis Presley - Are You Lonesome Tonight.mp3
    S:\Our Music\Elvis Presley\Elvis in Concert\Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling in Love.mp3
    or even:
    S:\Our Music\Elvis Presley\Elvis in Concert\1 - Are You Lonesome Tonight.mp3
    S:\Our Music\Elvis Presley\Elvis in Concert\2 - Can't Help Falling in Love.mp3
    Is there another "key" to tell it to use the artist name? Or how about a simple reversal of the track number setting? What would be the equivalent of TRUE if "AA==" means FALSE?
    Incidently, removing the section altogether does not revert back to filenames-with-disknumber... that would be too easy!
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I prefer to do all ID3 editing outside of iTunes, as I have seen edits to be not directly made to files. I am big on tagscanner 5.0 after organizing my entire library of over 8800 songs. Tagscanner will allow you to rename your files based on several ID3 values. I can explain.
    When using tagscanner 5.0, you make edits to the song title, album, artist, album artist, track number (#/# if you want the "of"), year, album art, comment, genre, disc #, composer, publisher...blah blah blah. You can then rename each file using the values that have been entered or already known. You want title, track number, codec type, length in seconds...select those. It is easy to tell it what you want in a file name. You just want artist and title, easy enough, just tell it you want just that. There is a drop down where you can select the more popular formats, you can even add your own characters to the file name.
    I used tagscanner to clean up the ID3 tags and file/folder names of my entire library. Once I got started, it went pretty fast, each album only took about a minute to do, including finding artwork.

  • Cannot read track number box if using dark color configuration

    The color options are fantastic in 3.0 but for one single problem. If configured to a dark color - I use a very deep blue - the Track number box in multitrack mode cannot be read without putting the cursor in the window (then it blinks brightly because it is highlighted and ready to be relabeled). It seems that it needs to be programmed to show against any color configuration, without having to place the cursor there.

    >So who decided to "fix" it?
    Hmm... this all happened with AA2.0 initially - and that was done to an Adobe corporate (grey) plan, to all intents and purposes. There are some things that are bigger than all of us, it would seem...
    I suppose that in an ideal world, a lot of people would say that being able to 'skin' Audition would be the answer, but that doesn't really do it for me, I'm afraid. My attitude to this is quite simple; Audition is a tool, and I don't care what colour it is, as long as it works properly. Yes, it should look okay, but mostly that's to do with being able to see what's necessary at any given time, and by and large, I can.
    But, doing what you want could be regarded as an option, and as I've said elsewhere, I think that options are a Good Thing. The only snag is that I rather suspect that more colour options will come some way down the priority list -
    unless, that is, they are easy to do. In that case you perhaps stand a better chance!

  • Song and Artist Info missing under itunes but not in the original file, and putting track number next to certian songs. Help

    i recently updated my itunes...today i opened it up and moticed abuout 100 songs missing...they are now at the bottom of itunes song list with a number next to them with information mission such as this the example below
    01 human                                                                 (this song should have the killers name as artist and cd title, etc)
    01 hosanna     hillsong united                                 (this song should have the cd title to it)
    02 lay me down                                          burning light

    02 let it be                       the beatles
    03 papercut
    when i go under the original folders and files in the itunes folder everything is normal no missing info, etc. but under itunes orgnising its picking and choosing the same songs and putting the track number next to it and others songs in the same cd not. plus info missing. under the infor when i click right button all info missing there...but not under original file.
    please help

    A response on this subject from another post:
    It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
    To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
    If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
    The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.

    I had an earlier post on this subject with a similar problem. I tried what you suggested and it worked indeed. You can select the artists from your Ipod on Itunes and after highlighting the artists/albums affected, click NO on the compilation box and the issue is resolved: the artists appear on the list.
