i know everyone here is having similer issues with running mac os x on a g3 blue and white tower well here are some simple tricks to help you out
from what i have learned
question: when i try to install mac os x on my g3 tower b&w the tower gives me a blank screen or doesn't show a boot screen even though the monitor is on
answer:make sure you have your old operating system installed before switching to mac os x and go into control panel and make sure your monitor settings are set to 640x480 or 800x600 then try to install mac os x the g3 seems to not like the mac os x installation being ran in 1024x1248 and this causes the system to hang or display nothing on the screen a simple fix once os x is installed you can switch the settings back to 1024x1248
question: after upgrading my hard drive to a 80 gig hard drive my programs crash or hang
answer: make sure your macintosh contains at least 256 megs of ram or even 512 megs of ram and update the ide caable in the g3 tower to a ata 133 hard drive cable the cable will help stop lag issues

answer: not true you can edit any video you want to on a g3 mac as long as you have enough memory and hard drive space and upgrade the cd drive or use a external dvdr rw drive for macintosh (warning though your quaity will be a little shaky but not bad)

Any rev 1 you should avoid upgrading a drive to use the native IDE bus as anything that is capable of more than ~18MB/sec (all current drives) will result in data corruption, which is well documented.

It depends on what someone really means by "video editing" and how much time they have or are willing to wait - that is what the G5 Quad is built for
The difference between a maxed out G3/1000 1GB and 15K boot drive, Radeon 9200 still doesn't compare to MDD specs below. And unless you are using a 10K Raptor in the video slot (66MHz) disk I/O will be limited to 53MB which is all the PCI bus allows for writes.
A Core Duo Mini or iMacIntel unless you already have done all the upgrades, in which case you know what B&W will and will not do.

Windows 7 includes DirectX 11 in its baseline and it is not necessary to install another version of it. Your problems may be caused by the installation of the version of DirectX you installed. Uninstall the one you installed and see if you

Need help speeding up a track. I have an audition song I need to be at 1 min. and I need to speed it up just a bit to fit it all in. Can't figure it out, any help would be great!

I checked the tip on your website and I'm not sure if that is correct.
An imported audio file turns into an orange Audio Region. Turning on "Follow Tempo & Pitch" will analyze the audio file to create the (invisible) Transient Marker. However this enables only Tempo changes of the Audio Region BUT NOT Pitch changes. The Pitch slider is still grayed out.
Turning an orange Audio Region into a purple Audio Region will activate the Pitch Slider (not grayed out anymore) but you still can set any Pitch offset. So the turning purple thing seems to be more a cosmetic change which could lead to confusion.
The only way to utilize Pitch changes on an imported audio file is to turn it into an Apple Loop (Edit > Add to Loop Library) and then grab it from the Loop Browser. Now it is a blue Apple Loop Region with all its advantages, including Pitch changes.
Can you confirm that, or do you have different behavior on your system?
Lucylouisie, here are the steps to shorten your audition song :
Import the audio file into a new Project with an Audio Track (lets have the Tempo at 120bpm). The Audio Region is orange
Double click on the Audio Region to open the Track Editor and there, select the checkbox "Follow Tempo & Pitch". GarageBand will analyze the audio file and create (invisible) Transient Markers which make the following magic possible. Remember, the Pitch slider is grayed out and applying a Pitch offset to the (orange) audio region is not possible even if the checkbox is labeled "Follow Tempo & Pitch"
Let's assume your audio region is 1min and 10sec long. You can see that on the Time Ruler (you have to set it to display Absolute Time to show the time and not the bar:beat).
Now set the LCD Display to "Project" and click on the Tempo which opens a vertical Tempo Slider.
This is the important part: When moving the Tempo slider up, the Audio Region's length stays the same on the Track Lane but the Time Ruler will stretch to the right. Adjust the slider so the 1min mark on the Time Ruler aligns with the end of your Audio Region.
What happened: you speeded up the playback Tempo of your Project and with it the playback Tempo of your Audio Region (remember, "Follow Tempo") so it lasts exactly 1min instead of 1min 10 sec.
It sounds more complicated than it actually is. Just play around with it and always keep the relationship between playback tempo and Region length in mind. The procedure I just described also helps you to visualize the concept to better wrap your head around that it.(Just for fun, switch the TIme Ruler, to display Musical time, bar:beats and see what is fixed and what is chaining now).
On a side note, when chaining the playback speed of an audio file, there are two scenarios:
Scenario A - The change in length changes also the pitch. This is the traditional way with tape machines or using a vinyl record on a turn table).
Scenario B - The change in length does not affect the pitch which requires additional pitch compensation. GarageBand uses this method and that is what you want in your case: Playing back your audio clip to make it shorter without ending up with a mickey mouse effect of your audio file by transposing it (pitch change).

Just my thoughts to add to the excellent answers above.
• BRAND of DVD used - Matters when doing Video-DVDs
Memorex, NoName etc cheap brands usually do NOT work
I only Use Verbatim (more organic dye in these)
• Type of DVD - matters
- DVD+/RW - usually results in problems
- DL-DVDs are more problematic than SL-DVDs
- DVD+R are a more modern sort - BUT PLAYS BADLY or not at all on older DVD-players
I only use DVD-R
• BURN SPEED - matters
- Best in iDVD app - IS NOT BEST at all but results in lot's of Burn Errors = Doesn't play well or at all
I set this down to x2 or x4 max.

Will making more Photo Library's help speed iPhoto?

Ok, so I have about 13,000 photos in iPhoto. they've been collecting for years. I have videos in there as well.
It's going very slow.
I've tried rebuilding the library and stuff, but i was thinking...
Would creating multiple Libraries help speed it up?
I could create a Library for like 2003-2005, 2006-2008, 2009-2011...etc
and then i can just keep the most recent one open at all times.
Would this actually speed up iPhoto?
I don't mind having to restart and load a new Library when I want to find old photos, but I do want to keep using iPhoto to organize and manage my photos.

So what would be the benefit of having several Libraries then in iPhoto?
Generally there are no advantages and several disadvantages - it is strictly a personal issue - if you for any reason want multiple libraries do it - but there is generally no reason to do that
Also, are there any other opinions for speeding it up a bit?
Maybe - depends on many things - for some people web syncs are a big issue at start up and turning all of them off helps - sharing can be a speed issue - without specifics of your system and exactly what you mean by "speed issues" everything is just wild guesses

I have iphone 4, really a great tech! But there're some simple things I hope apple to add
- why there's no share contact by sms only there by mms or email. I hope 2 add it in future.
- we cant send group sms selecting multiple names from contacts to send them sms
- no editing of the whole contacts eg. Multiple select of contacts to delete them instead of selecting each one and getting into their edit 2 delete
- no arrows keys in keyboard. Sometimes it helps when try 2 go back & correct a letter instead of deleting the whole!
- no option in phone tunes to make phone ring once! I prefer it!

Because the contact is sent as a vCard attachment, and an attachment sent as a message requires MMS. Are you charged more for MMS than an SMS? If not, not sure what difference it makes. This also provides for an easy import into the iPhone's address book and with any address book application used on your computer.

You should be syncing contacts with a supported address book application on your computer or via an online address book such as Google or Yahoo where a mass deletion of contacts is easier and faster. Since doing so is not usually required on a regular basis and since contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book application where doing so is much easier and faster, not sure when or if such an option will be provided with the iPhone, but you can use the iPhone feedback link for this as well.

from the Exchange perspective backup and restore is Dumpster.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee364755(v=exchg.150).aspx and, if applicable, you can run your Exchange Servers backupless. So more "speed" is the same improvement on IOps as for the EDB.
This is for availability of you mailbox data.
So you need to define a little more your goals of backup and recovery, while on the other hand there is no more backup "tool" outside of dumpster as you never need it from an Exchange Servers view. ntbackup is old style. :)

yes, you can do both.
Switch to icon view. Then select "View Options" from the menu "View". There you can select both align to grid and always sort by ...
Since I use a german system the name of the option and the menu might be different. It is the menu to the left of the menu "Go To..." and within this menu the last option.

Entourage 2008 simple things I can't figure out

I've just got Entourage 2008, an upgrade from the 2004 version and I cant figure out a few simple things. The first being, when I've got an 'identity'open, the old 2004 version used to say at the top of the window which identity that was and the 2008 version just says 'Inbox - Folders on My Computer' on whichever indentity I'm looking at and I have to look closer at the actual emails to know which mail address I'm looking at.
Does that make sense?

Hello! I’ve offered the steps below to similar posts in the past and they helped out getting to the solution (or at least find the cause). I suggest them to you too in this case. It will take you about 30 minutes or less to do these, depending on how bad the problem on your Mac is.
The goal here is to boot your Mac to the so-called Recovery partition where you’ll have a chance to repair the disk and the disk permissions using the Disk Utility and Password Utility. This might solve your issue and even if it doesn’t- it’s still a decent maintenance step to perform. These steps won’t erase your data or reinstall your Mac in any way if you follow instructions carefully.
Here’s how:
1/ Make sure your computer is completely shut down.
2/ You’ll have to be quick next: Press the Mac’s power button. As soon as you either hear the loud chime, or see the display light up - usually after a second or 2 - on your keyboard press [cmd] + [r] Keep these keys on your keyboard pressed until you either see an Apple Logo with a loading bar or a spinning gear.
After a few minutes, you’ll be presented with a Utilities screen. This is the Recovery partition. If this step is already giving you problems, try using a USB-keyboard. It doesn’t have to be an Apple-keyboard. If you have a Windows-tailored keyboard laying around, use the “Windows-flag” key in stead of the [cmd]-key and it should also work.
3/ Choose Disk Utility and click [continue]
Disk Utility will display your computer’s harddrive in the left column. The default name for it is “Macintosh HD” and is usually the second one from the top. Click on it and click on the [verify disk] button. This will check your “Macintosh HD” harddrive partition for errors. If found, click [repair disk] unless you have a Fusion drive in your Mac and it says [fix] instead of [repair disk] please tell us before you continue! 4/ Once done with the verifying or repairing of your “Macintosh HD” click [repair disk permissions]
This will check your partition for permissions errors. A common myth about this feature is that it will fix all permissions issues on your Mac, which is not true, but it will fix most systemwide issues. Also, here is a list of error messages that you can safely ignore if they pop up:

5/ Lastly we shall do a permissions/Access Control List repair on specifically your user’s home folder with a somewhat hidden tool in the Recovery partition. Close Disk Utility and find the menu called “utilities” in the top left corner of your computer’s display. It’s in between the menus “edit” and “window” Don’t be confused with the menu called “os x utilities”
Choose Terminal. A somewhat old-fashioned looking window will pop up, waiting for a text command from you. This is the Terminal.
After the # type: resetpassword and press return. Note that there is no space between ‘reset’ and ‘password’
What you’ll see next is an rectangular window that gives you the option to reset passwords. We are not going to that, however. Instead, click on “Macintosh HD” at the top. In the pull-down menu below that, choose your user's accountname. Skip all the rest and at the very bottom click the [reset]-button.
A spinning gear will appear and may stay on for a second or several minutes. It’s hard to predict exactly how long.
If you have multiple users on your Mac, I advise you to repeat this step for all your users.
We’re ready to reboot your Mac now. Click on the Apple Menu and choose “startup disk” Choose to boot from “Macintosh HD” Please let us know if this solved your issue, or if the steps above did not work, or could not be performed for some reason.
If they worked I suggest you do these steps everytime your Mac becomes slow.

JDeveloper doing simple things - how to

Just a couple of simple things that I can't seem to do in JDeveloper 11.1.1.6.0
I have to use that version for OIM so please don't tell me to use 11.1.2.0.0 !!
How do I simply see my folders? There is no option in View for a simple folder view - I have Application Navigator and that's pretty much it. I just want to see if my project has recognized the folders I am supposed to have in my project, but there is no way to do that. I also tried messing with all of the "Navigator Display Options" and "Working Sets" options. Still nothing. I took a project someone sent me and dropped it into the application folder, and then opened the project. It found the single source file but none of the folders show up anywhere.
Second thing - if I create a folder external to the project and drop it into the project folder structure - why does "refresh" not pick it up?

JDev doesn't have a "file" navigator. We figure the OS usually provides a good one of those. :-)
Here are some tips:
1) Toggling some options in the Navigator Display Options will get you close (but it's still not a file navigator:
* Group by Directory (checked)
* Sort By Type (unchecked)
* Package Level (unlimited)
* Web Content Level (unlimited)
* Show Libraries (unchecked)
* Group by Categories (unchecked)
* Group Related Files (unchecked)
2) By selecting a node in the Application Navigator, you can choose Edit > Copy Path, which puts the os path to the node on your clipboard. You can now paste this into Windows Explorer (or similar for your os) to use the OS navigator. Optionally, you can use "Tools > External tools" to easily add a button or menu item to open a navigator node in the OS navigator.
3) The main thing to recognize is that the contents of the project as shown in the navigator is governed by the project source paths (in Project Properties). If you added a folder to a project folder and it's not showing up after a refresh, it's probably not under the project source path after all. Or, it's possible that you have added a working set which is hiding the contents.
