Simple use of iCal

I have 3 questions. I assume you want 3 separate posts. For reference, the other 2 subjects are: "Can't add eventl" and "Color coding etc."
In searching for answers it appears most of the questions regard synch and communication of iCal between multiple devices. The possibilities seem to be quite complex. Is there a better calendar to use for basic, one computer, simple calendar use? All I want to do is keep track of appointments and print a page to post on the fridge.
Sorry to be so ancient sounding but there are still a few of us living in the 20th century.
Thanks
Geoff

Most users of iCal have no problems. If you are not syncing or communicating with other devices you won't have those problems. Stick with iCal.

  • Which mail client do I use with iCal server?

    I will soon have os x server, and I want to use iCal server with mail. I want to schedule meetings, etc., like Exchange. However, many people have Outlook. Some have Entourage. Will these clients with with iCal for scheduling meetings and if not which client can I use? Thank you.

    Which Platform are the clients?
    Apple Mail does not work directly with iCal server. The Leopard version of iCal is what is used for scheduling. Mail is not like Outlook on PC or Entourage on the Mac where email, calendering and contacts are in one application. Leopard uses Mail, iCal, Address Book to provide similar functions.

  • Can I the same alert sound be used in iCal and on iPhone calendar apps?

    Maybe I'm getting old and having a plethora of blips and bleeps going off all day is making me wonky, but it's begun to drive me mad that iCal on my MacBook Pro and Calendar on my iPhone use, by default, completely different sets of alert tones.  I'm trying to, which I realize may be a futile endeavor (of which, if you have certainty, please don't hesitate to pipe up.), get as many sounds as possible in like programs to be the same.  I think it would solve every problem in life (yes. every. single. one.) if I was able to hear my computer blip from the other room, my iPhone blip while pedaling thru traffic and know "a-hah, I need to check my Calendar to see what's up!" rather than "was that 'whistle' a Calendar reminder or a Reminder reminder?... oohhh I can't remember", because my simple brain has been Pavlovianly trained to associate that single sound with one meaning only.  This, to me, sounds far more pleasurable than some syntho-digital cacophany resulting from each app and application vying for it's own unique style and the resultant uncertainty over whether or not I need pay attention or note to myself to later just turn the sound off. Thanks & enjoy your waffles!

    To wjosten: I never said I work for Apple I work part time as a privet contractor time to time for a military Apple reseller in Europe and feelance. But hey...it is cool if you don't believe me, my money still keeps rolling in .
    And if anyone would like information on Apple warranty out side of the USA. • I want to use Panthers iCal on Leopards OS?

    I upgraded to Leopard OS and hate the new iCal with a vengeance. Does any one know if I can re-install my old iCal from the original disk or will I have to install the whole Panther OS as well? I'm a bit afraid to try in case Leopard gets taken off and I have to start all over again.

    AppleMan...I have the same iMac you have...i-7 16GB with a SSD....just bought it second hand and it is about 1.5 years old....it was maxed out with upgrades when the original owner bought it.  It was also restored back to factory settings prior to me taking possession.
    I am making home movies in iMovie 11....max length 30 minutes or less.  I am totally new to this editing.  I am using HD footgage filmed from my Hero GoPro 3.  I am finding that the movies that I am creating are skipping, staggering, hanging up etc...usually where I had transitions.  I am certain I have enough power and memory in my iMac, so what's the issue?  I read one of your other posts about optimizing each event or clip to 1080p?  Is this what I need to do for every clip I import?  Can I do this for all the clips at once on import?  I also read that I may need to export the movie to quick time for smooth playback??
    Any help you can provide would be appreciated!

  • What's a good calendar service to use with iCal on iPhone and mac?

    Sometime around iOS 7 and Mavericks updates, my Google calendar stopped playing nice with iCal on my phone. I'm wondering what other people are doing.
    I don't know whether it was Google or Apple that caused the issue, and I'm not too fussed either way, I just want to have something that works again.
    What does 'not playing nice' mean?
    I used to be able to create an appointment, add my wife as an invitee, and it would appear in her iCal.
    Now, it appears in her email, but not calendar. Clicking "yes" on the email loads safari instead of iCal. Then there's this whole log in thing. It's annoying.
    What I'd like
    Three things:
    1. I'd like my wife and I to each have a personal calendar. She should have read/write access to her calendar, and read-only to mine (and vice versa).
    2. I'd like a share calendar that we can both see and write to. We used this for family events.
    3. I'd like to be able to invite my wife to an event, and have that invite appear in iCal both on her phone and her mac.
    Everything should of course work well with iCal.
    I don't care if it works with Google services, although if there's a way to fix my google calendar so that it works right, I'm open to that.

    Unless you want a new computer, forget about AVCHD. It requires too much muscle to edit comfortably on anything but the fastest computer.
    What camera is nice, depends on your budget. Formats that are easy to edit are HDV, DVCProHD (P2) and XDCAM. In the consumer range you could look at the Canon HV40 or XH-A1s, in the prosumer range look at the Panasonic AG-HPX170, Canon XH-H1s, JVC GY-ND250 or Sony HVR Z5 or Z7 and all Sony XDCAM cameras, especially the EX1 and EX3. In the professional range look at the Sony PDW-F355 or upward.

  • BUG in SelectBooleanCheckBox component binding Simple Use Case

    I have a table called Customer have four fields. Id, Name, Gender, Regular.
    The sample data is
    --- 23, Mark, M, Y
    --- 26, Fiona, F, N
    I want to show an updatable form to the end user for the same using ADF. The UI components for Name, Gender are OutputText and Regular is SelectBooleanCheckbox (Y is checked and N is unchecked)
    I do the following steps
    a) Create an Entity Object
    b) Create a View Object and add YesNoLOVaccessor to the View object as per this post for SelectBooleanCheckBox
    http://theo.vanarem.nl/2010/07/07/adf-checkbox-representing-a-yes-or-no-value/
    c) Test the same using Business component tester, the model for Customer query shows up with Regular as a checkbox. Browsing through the data gives correct data for checkbox in BC tester.All good till this stage
    d) Next I drag the Customer Viewobject instance in the data control to the JSPX page and add as ADF form including navigation controls. I use the Next control to browse
    First record shows up as 23, Mark, M, Y and then click next to go to next record it shows up as 26, Fiona, F, Y instead of 26, Fiona, F, N
    Oracle please confirm if this is a bug or I am missing something here
    Thanks

    Thanks I resolved it now, I am not complaining but the lack of use cases on internet for simple things does make things difficult and frustrating. I modified the ViewRowImpl java file to convert the 'Y' value as true and 'N' value as false as below.
    public String getCheck() {
    //return (String)getAttributeInternal(CHECK);
    String value = (String)getAttributeInternal(CHECK);
    String returnValue = null;
    if ("Y".equals(value))
    returnValue = "true";
    else
    returnValue = "false";
    return returnValue;
    public void setCheck(String value) {
    //setAttributeInternal(CHECK, value);
    String dbValue = null;
    if ("true".equals(value))
    dbValue = "Y";
    else
    dbValue = "N";
    setAttributeInternal(CHECK, dbValue);
    However as per best practice can I have a helper method to do the conversion. I use this checkbox code for around eighty checkboxes. What's the best practice.
    Thanks

  • Simple use of variables in query

    Hi,
    i've just started using PL/SQL and as a long time user of TSQL the syntax is a bit confusing for me. I'm trying to test a simple query - using a variable to select some rows from a table. Lest assume that we have a table with data from different days and we want to view data from specific day.
    I could use:
    SELECT * FROM TABLE
    where TRADE_DATE = '2010-10-23'
    but what i would like to do is to pass the date value as a variable, in TSQL i'd just write:
    declare @trade_date datetime
    set @trade_date = '2010-10-23'
    SELECT * FROM TABLE
    where TRADE_DATE = @trade_date
    Could someone help me and write the last query using PL/SQL syntax?
    Also - it there some kind of a tutorial for people like me? comparison of simple queries written in both languages? tried to google it but didn't have luck.

    There are a couple of differences besides variable syntax. The variable would look like this in PL/SQL:
    declare
        v_trade_date date := DATE '2010-10-23';
    begin
        select * into ?????  -- see below
        from   table
        where  trade_date = v_trade_date;
    end;However the next difference is that PL/SQL does not implicitly return result sets to the client application, so you either have to select <b>into</b> a PL/SQL variable, or process the values in a loop, or explicitly return a ref cursor (or just do the processing in SQL statements within the procedure, without returning anything). I don't know much about T-SQL but I have the impression that in Oracle there is a stronger distinction between SQL (the interpreted query language) and PL/SQL (the compiled programming language) than the equivalents in SQL Server. Saubhik's example above is not PL/SQL (which you asked about) but plain SQL.
    Using the example of SQL*Plus, you might use a ref cursor like this:
    var r refcursor;
    declare
        v_trade_date date := DATE '2010-10-23';
    begin
        open :r for
        select *
        from   test_table
        where  trade_date = v_trade_date;
    end;
    print :ror
    var r refcursor;
    create or replace procedure p (p_out_results out sys_refcursor)
    as
        v_trade_date date := DATE '2010-10-23';
    begin
        open p_out_results for
        select *
        from   test_table
        where  trade_date = v_trade_date;
    end p;
    set autoprint on
    exec p(:r)Edited by: William Robertson on Oct 24, 2010 5:31 PM

  • How can I change the use for iCal

    I currently use iCal so that my iPad, iPhone and iMac are all synch'g.  So far it has worked seemlessly until now at least!
    My iTunes account is setup under my wife's name so iCal is actually listed through her.  This has never been a problem but I just realized that when I accept and invitation to a event on my calender it lists it as my wife's name not mine.   Can I change that without affecting all of my calenders?

    So far I have been able to change the name that was listed under iCloud under ical's user settings.  It didn't change the name that was listed on my event that i already responded to.  ANyone know if this would make the difference?

  • Office scheduling using a iCal or some other program.

    Is it possible to do a year's worth of office scheduling using iCal--that is 6 doctors with 6 different kinds of schedules. For example, one wants to do walkins for a week each month. The others want to do it every 4th day.
    Also we'd like to be able to set up a year's schedule showing when each person is on overnight call, which one is on call for various holidays, etc.
    Surely there's a program to do that.

    Have you tried repeating events?

  • How do I set the account used for ical reminders?

    Hello folks,
    On my wife's computer we have OS X Lion.
    She has two email accounts loaded on Mail, using IMAP. These are Gmail accounts. I will refer to them as account #1 and #2
    In iCal she has calendars loaded from Gmail account #1.
    We have noticed that all her iCal event reminders are being sen to account #1 using account #2 for the sending. Even though the event is on a Gmail Calendar on account #1.
    She has no calendars loaded from account #2 (as she does not use calendars on that Gmail account).
    Neither of us can figure out why or who iCal is sending out reminders via her second gmail account, for appointments set in the calendar of her #1 email account. We can not see why logically iCal and/or Mail is linking these accounts in this way.
    We'd like to have it so that the reminders are only sent using account #1.
    Can anyone tell me how or why this is occurring, and what I can do about it?
    Thank you so much,
    Jonathan

    If you are referring to your "iCloud account", then simply tap "settings / iCloud" - delete the account you are currently logged in with, and add the correct one.

  • Simple use of subpanels?

    I've almost given up on finding a simple way to use subpanels.  What I want is very simple--to have the FPs of a few VIs on tabs within a single main FP in order to reduce the clutter.  But what I'm finding is that apparently I'm not supposed to use the VI icons and their connector panes on the BD if I use subpanels.  The necessary overhead is fairly intimidating:
    1. This entire thread
    2. Message 18 of this thread
    3. This entire thread (brace yourself)
    I tried in a simple example (attached) to just use the connector panes, but I'm guessing it's incorrect (at least theoretically), because nobody seems to do it.  Moreover, if I try the same thing with my real VIs, the entire thing hangs when I press buttons in VIs that are not running.  Should I abandon this approach or can it work?
    Am I missing something, or is it really non-trivial to use subpanels?  It would be a shame if such a simple need can only be met with advanced concepts.
    Thanks!

    Hi Bracker,
    I've not used Sub Panels before, but I just had a play around with building an application reference and wiring that into the Sub Panel and this seems to produce a working Sub Panel. My VI will work if you reference an application within the same folder directory. Is this what you wanted?
    Please download the attached VI to see the implementation (The snippet above is a little unclear). Hope this helps.

  • Even Simpler Moto V325 iCal iSync

    First, to get your V325 to be "seen" by iSybc, you will have to install the right phoneplugin. You can get it from Dr. Shenoy's web site: http://prashant.shenoy.biz/Software.html
    Once the phone is recognized, use this longish workaround that I stumbled on in trying to get things to sync with iSync (Contacts sync fine):
    Resetting the calendar on the MOTO V325
    1. Go to iCal and Select “America/New York” time zone – top R. BACKUP DATA BASE!! Close iCal.
    2. Open iSync, make sure settings are ok: Under “More Options”, select “Don’t synchronize events prior to: Today”. Check “Don’t synchronize events after: One Month. Set “Events Time Zone: Atlantic/Reykjavik”. Select “Work” calendar only in iSync.
    3. Select the V325 icon in iSync.
    4. Under “Devices” menu, select “Reset Device…”
    5. Shut down iSync immediately after resetting to prevent accidental automatic sync of phone and iCal. Better, deselect Calendars in iSync.
    6. Contacts sync fine to the V325 address book – check Contacts: sync Cell Phone; More Options “Only sync contacts with phone numbers” and “Sync E-mail addresses”. Or you can include Contacts when you “Reset Device…”
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I have given up with Missing Sync Events. I am double entering data into iCal to duplicate my Treo 680. All other syncing between my Treo and Powerbook work fine!

  • What URL to use in iCal / Calendar to publish to Google?

    Hi to all the readers
    I know that this has been spoken about before but everytime I go through all the discussions then i feel that this point of answer is not made or made clearly.
    As a Mac user, we know that we can sync google calendars in a few ways. But how do you create a new calendar for your Google account and have it reflecting in your sync setup?
    Regardless to the setup used, the end point always comes down to that the calendar must be created first in the Web Interface, then only after this will it reflect back to your Calendar App. For our Mac users, we use iCal ("Calendar" in Mountain Lion) and this is now working very well getting your Google Calendars. When the new calender is set in Google, it even reflects there with out any more input.
    Now the additional way to get this calendar published to Google without the Web Interface, is to use BusySync. Great program, but this is a middle man that is becoming a problem is some cases. I have an office where there are calendars being shared over LAN, over Google and the erorrs can be hard to track and support for BusySync needs to be contacted with most of these horrifying erros and miscommunications.
    Now if iCal is able to Sync with Google Calendar, and BusySync is able to publish to Google, why can't this just happen from iCal. There is even a publish option but the URL is needed. And funny enough, this URL is nowhere to be found. I have logged onto Google's Calendar and tried using several URL's with absolutely no luck. So maybe BusySync can tell us what URL we must be using.
    Many thanks for the time

    Good question. I dont have an answer but just so you know I tried ~site and ~sitecollection and it did not work. So for now I am assuming that for now there is nothing in CSWP that provides the dynamic SC URL.
    I am voting up to your question in case someone has a better answer.

  • Using an iCal Event to Close an Application

    i want to schedule the closing of an application. My internet provider gives me unlimited download at night so i want to do my downloading between certain hours every day. I have scheduld itunes to open and at 2300 each night but i then want it to close at 0800 the next day. Apart from gliches in Mavericks getting the schedule to start the task there appears no way to close an app using iCal.
    Any suggestions?

    Open the AppleScript editor in Applications>Utilities. Copy the following into it
    tell application "iTunes" to quit
    Save it as a script and place it somewhere convenient.
    Set your event in iCal and set an alarm, choosing 'Run script'. Select the script you just created. (I assume all this is the same in Mavericks as earlier systems). However if iTunes is in the process of downloading at the time you will get a warning message so you should probably add the following:
    delay (1)
    tell application "System Events"
      tell application "iTunes" to activate
      keystroke return
    end tell
    I should make sure that the Finder was frontmost when starting iTunes so that a spurious return won't matter.
