Simple way of connecting to windows machine

I had tiger and by clicking on network could see and connect to my windows PC wirelessly. Now when I click on my network the macbook does not find anything even although nothing has changed on my setup except I am now using Leopard.
On Leopard I don't seem to be able to do this. I have had a look at the other posts but get a bit lost with what some people are saying, is there a simple guide on how to fix this problem?

System Preferences > Network > whatever connection type (Ethernet Connected) > Advance (button) > WINS (tab) > MSHOME (or whatever the name of the workgroup is)
the xp box showed up in the finder. i clicked on it and the shares showed up in the window.
cool.
on the xp box, i should have done the above first, but, anyway, on the xp box, i deleted all my network places. i then "set up a home or small office network." using the network setup wizard.

I no longer have any disks for my airport extreme (its pre-time capsule)... how can I connect my windows machine to it in order to get to the internet?

You can directly download the AirPort Utility for Windows from Apple Support here.
Once the AirPort Extreme is properly configured for Internet access you can connect your PC to the Extreme either by a wired or wireless connection.

  • Simple way to connect Oracle 11g XE with MS SQL Server 2000

Is there a simple way to access SQL server database/ Tables within from Oracle 11g XE (Windows-32bit) on same machine. I am a novice so kindly keep it simple. Thanks

To connect to a SQL Server you need to use an Oracle product called Database gateway for ODBC which uses a 3rd party ODBC driver to connect to the SQL Server.
The easiest set up is to install DG4ODBC release 11.2 on the SQL Server. How to configure the Database Gateway for ODBC is described in note:
How to Configure DG4ODBC (Oracle Database Gateway for ODBC) on Windows 32bit to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install          [Document 466225.1]
when you install DG4ODBC on a 32bit Windows operating system and the instructions for a 64bit Widnows operating system can be found in this note:
How to Configure DG4ODBC (Oracle Database Gateway for ODBC) on 64bit Windows Operating Systems to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install          [Document 1266572.1]
The database gateway for ODBC is available for free from here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html
Please make sure you select the 32bit or 64bit Windows operating system depending on the platform where you've installed the SQL Server and on which you now install the gateway and download the <win32/64>_11gR2_gateways.zip CD.
Once downloaded, unzip it and install it using the Oracle Universal installer. Make sure you select the product Database Gateway for ODBC (there's also a dedicated SQL server gateway called Database Gateway for MS SQL Server - this gateway is NOT for free and it requires a separate license).

  • Connect to windows machine with ethernet

This is driving me nuts, because I used to do it with Tiger and Panther, albeit it took hours to figure out, but fail with Leopard. I just want to grab some large files from a windows machine via ethernet cable. The Mac Help didn't help at all. I connect the cable, have file sharing is turned on (I think), but the network browser doesn't find the windows machine and "connect to" doesn't seem to work. What exactly are "DNSname" and "sharename", and how do they relate to "network name" and "computer name?" because nothing I put after smb:// seems to work. Firewall is off.
    Any quick help out there?
    Lars

    Thanks for the reply!
Windows firewall is off, the ip address starts with 169 and the sub mask net is 255.255.0.0. In the Local Area Connection Status window when I click "repair" it eventually says "... the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address.
Meanwhile I've tried the other way around, having the Mac join the pc's network, but I cannot for the life of me understand any of the explanations and steps. I'm just not good with Windows beyond the basics.
I went through the gazillion steps to turn file sharing on again just in case and restarted, but still "limited or no connectivity."

  • Connecting A Windows Machine to a Remote OS X Lion File Server

    Hi All,
Can anyone tell me how to connect a Windows 7 machine to my remote OS X Lion File Server? On my macs, it is simple, I go to finder, choose Go -->Connect to Server, and enter my IP address. I can't seem to figure out how to do this on a windows system.
    Thanks!
    Gabriel

are you saying that even when I have a folder that is configured to only allow access to designated users, it is still vulnerable over the internet to others (strangers)?
    Yes, Absolutely.
I understand that VPNs provide the most secure transmission of data, but wouldn't someone on the internet need a username and password to access a file on the server?
Yes, you'd need a username and password to gain access - as long as you've configured the access controls accordingly. But you have to understand that's not enough.
Do you trust that EVERY account on your server has a STRONG password? It only takes one weak password to compromise the entire system.
Are you sure your passwords are not vulnerable to brute force attacks? Hint: they pretty much all are!
Are you watching your logs to detect failed logins (which might indicate a hacker trying to guess a password)?
Are you prepared to deal with, potentially, thousands, or even millions of hits a day to your server, from people 'knocking on the door'?
Finally, and here's the kicker - the default Windows sharing protocols are not encrypted. So even if you do check all the above points, your data is still flowing unencrypted over the internet. This allows anyone in the right place to just sniff the traffic off the wire, including the login credentials (there goes the need for a brute-force attack) and the actual data transferred.
The mere fact that you advertise yourself as running a Windows sharepoint on the internet makes you a target. It doesn't even matter if you have nothing of value to hide/protect, someone's going to see the sharepoint and is going to be curious as to what's behind it. Protect yourself, your company, and your clients by not even letting them know you're holding any cards, let alone showing your hand.

  • Connecting to Windows machines by name doesn't work

OK. Here's the story. PC/Linux guy for a long time. I'm the default sysadmin at work and for family. My wife bought me a Mac for my birthday, and I LOVE IT !!
The only problem is I still have 4 windows machines in the house, and I need to connect to them to get work done. (I actually now prefer using the Mac keyboard and mouse over the standard PC ones.)
I've gone through all the tips on joining my Mac to a Windows workgroup, and in the Finder, under the Shared section, I see the names for all my windows machines on the network. I can change my Connect as.. information, and see my windows shares.
Here's the problem, though. I want to use either VNC or MS Remote Desktop Connection on my mac to get my Windows Desktop. I cannot enter in just the name in either of these dialogs. It doesn't fined the machine by name only. If I figure out the explicit IP address, then it works fine.
Also, if I open up a terminal window, and attempt to ping a windows machine by name, it won't find it. What's going on here?
    Thanks for all responses !!

    G'day jimmy,
The wonders of name resolution are often a pain in the proverbial.
What response do you get from the "ping" when you attempt to use the name? Are you using the name of the PC on its own or "PCname.local"?
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • Simple way to connect AEBS to other router for n-profile

    Hi There,
I have just sign up to local ISP who gave me a modem/router for their fast internet. Internet itself is fine in terms of speed; however their wireless profile from that router is b/g. I got AEBS and I want to connect it their router to get n-profile from AEBS.
So question is how to connect AEBS for their router (Sagem)? I am newbie for this so I would be appreciated if someone will simply tell me to which ports cables are going to and what settings should I change in Sagem/AEBS, please.
The ISP giving dynamic IP for me if that matter at all. Apparently I can change for static but I don’t really know what is more beneficial.
Hope all that settings will stay the same once I will get Time capsule instead of AEBS.
    Thanks in Advance.

Don't think you need to change any settings in the Sagem. Just hook your AEBS with ethernet cable into ethernet port on the Sagem and the WAN(circle) port on the AEBS. Then open up Airport Utility and let it set up your airport network. You will setup the N network there.

  • How to connect to windows network

Is there a way to connect your iPad and/or iPhone 5 to a Windows network?  If so how?

    Hi, Charlie -
I'm not insulted at all! I appreciate the dialog.
Here's what I can tell you. I checked the airport utility and it indicates specifically that the Airport Express is being used to "Extend a wireless network." It's not connected to the Airport Extreme by any cable.
Given the difference in indicated signal strength on my MacBook Air (I'm using it now and it's 3 feet away from the Mac Pro), I've got full strength on the Air but when I try to connect the Windows machine it indicates only 1 bar/unit of strength. I'm guessing that it's not seeing the Express (extended) but only the Extreme that's much farther away. I'm in the basement at one end of the house and the Extreme is on the second floor at the other end of the house. When I boot the Mac Pro to OS X I'm able to join the extended network. Hmmmmm...

  • Easy connection between Windows Vista and OS 10.4?

Is there an easy way to connect a Windows Vista laptop to a G5 running OS10.14?
Seems my Vista can see my Mac, but connection is refused. I've turned on everything I can think of to enable sharing. Both computers can use the Internet using a router which is connected to a cable modem.
Surely there must be a straightforward method of connecting, without needing a dictionary of computer jargon and a PhD in networking?

  • Connecting a 3G ipod to a windows machine

h i have a 3G ipod and was wondering if i wanted to connect to a windows machine and wanted it to charge at the same time could i use the USB cable or do i have to get the cable that is split into USB and firewire. thanks for all the help

Just plug, unplug, and go. The iPod Dock makes charging and syncing easier than ever. A convenient and elegant home base for iPod on a desk or connected to a home stereo system, the dock provides charging and syncing via FireWire or USB 2.0*, and a stereo line out for simple connection to power speakers or a stereo system.
Compatible with iPod with Click Wheel (20/40GB).
*Note: USB 2.0 requires Mac v10.3.4 or later.

  • Connecting _from_ a windows machine through remote desktop?

I have a os x server set up so that users can get to it through vpn by logging into a specific account ( lets call it remote_user ). The users are on windows machines, and they get remote desktop running, at which point the problems start. Instead of seeing the remote_user's desktop, they see whatever happens to be on the screen at the time, even the Administrator's account, if that happens to be logged in. Furthermore, these users have full control over even the Administrator's account and are able to do whatever the administrator might be able to do locally. Is this normal behavior or is there something I should be doing otherwise. Thanks in advance!

    Further details:
the server is running on a mac mini, the internal interface is the built-in ethernet, the external interface is a usb-ethernet adapter connected directly to a cable modem. on the internal network there is a windows computer which has a program which needs to be run remotely. for this, a vpn connection to the server is established (using the vpn module in the server admin) and then the server is accessed though the virtual network that is created. the server runs wonderfully when left alone. however, when a vpn connection is made, the server lives for about 10 minutes and then freezes up. if no account is logged in on the server, the login window becomes unresponsive. if, for example, the administrator is logged in and is watching the server admin window, the server refreshes and remains that way, in a permanent refresh. if you have a preview window open reading a pdf, you are able to scroll though the pdf. you are, however unable to access any menus in the menu bar, nor start any new programs from the dock. the only way to get things up and running again is to hold down the power button. the last bit of bad news is that even after restart, the only way to get vpn up is to manually shut it down in the server administrator and to start it up again. i hope this can be resolved somehow. thanks in advance!
