Simple way of transferring files beween iBook and iMac?

So far, I have burned CDs to transfer files back and forth between the two machines. I also am considering using a portable back up drive.
I'd prefer a simple transfer of files between the machines via fire wire cable!
However, I have been discouraged so far to explore the "networking" solutions further, because of the (for me) complicated protocol and addressing issues in the networking preference panel....
A simple solution would make me happy!
Thanks,
PP

If you boot the iBook into FireWire target disk mode it will act as an external FireWire drive.
Then all you need to do is connect the iBook and iMac with a 6 pin to 6 pin FireWire cable. The iBook will appear on the iMac's desktop as a hard drive. You can then easily drag and drop files between the 2 machines.

  • Synchronize files in iBook and iMac

Is there a program or a process that would allow me to synchronize my word files between my iBook and iMac. Both systems run OS 10.3.7. I use the iBook in the field and the iMac in the office and need to have all my files synchronized in both computers.
    ibook   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

    BenMiami:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If your Word files on one Mac are in the same folder or overall container folder and the same is for the other Mac, you can use a synchronization application like Synk to sync those two container folders. You can have it use the latest version of duplicate files to be the one to be copied to the other Mac in case you use the same file on both Macs. There are a number of options to consider but you can do the job. All you'd need is to connect the two Mac with a ethernet cable or FW cable (Target Mode) and set the two folders to be synced. There are other applications that can to the job but I liked Synk's interface and it was pretty easy and complete. Personal preference.

  • Transfering files using drag and drop to Nano P

I havent installed the supplied disks that came with my Nano Plus but am transfering files using drag and drop from "my music" folder on my computer to the Nano. These files are stored on my computer as the Name of the Artist as the folder name with a sub folder named the CD title (default setting when using Windows media to rip) with the individual track files in that folder.
When I drag the main folder over to my Nano it just displays the Album title on the screen but not by artist and there is no way to select by artist (you can just switch "folders" on the Nano which will then display the CD title. If I used the supplied software with my Nano to transfer the files will I be able to choose by artist, CD, Genre, etc or is this not a function of the Nano?
Is it best to just select the individual song tracks and throw them in one large group on the Nano and then it can figure out which artist, album, genre they belong to?

The player will only show directories that contain music files.
The behaviour you want is common on players that manage their content with a database (typically HD-based devices), but Creative's flash players don't work that way (and the software used on the host computer doesn't have any influence on this - the user interface is controlled by the player's firmware).

  • Does anyone know if there is a way to share files between Mavericks and Mac OS 9.1 operating system?

Does anyone know if there is a way to share files between Mavericks and Mac OS 9.1 operating system? When I try to connect from my iMac I get a window that says "The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported." Is there a work-around to this problem or is it just not possible? It would be largly appriciated for a solutin beings my business is a small town newspaper, and we have some important files on the older computer that need to be acessed daily.

Actually to share files between OS 8-9 and OS X, all versions, is quite easy from what I read. Look here for some details.
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20003464-263.html
    And here.
    https://www.google.com/search?q=file+sharing+Mac+OS+9.x&oq=file+sharing+Mac+OS+9 .x&aqs=chrome..69i57.20706j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Or since both OS 9 and OS X can do SMB Windows sharing you could use that protocol to share files from one to the other.
Doesn't really matter what OS you are using. Mac OS/OS X shar files with Windows computers of all types and versions of Windows so the same applies for the different versions of Mac OS/OS X.
Each Operating System takes care of reading and writing files to there respective file formats of the hard drives so that does not have to be the same. They both just have to be able to do Ethernet with the same files sharing protocol.

  • What's the best way to move files from my 2012 iMac to my 2014 MBP?

What’s a good way to move files from my 2012 iMac to my MBP?
I prefer to do graphic work on my 21-inch iMac (2012 version). But when I travel I need to copy files to my 2014 MBP. I learned that my 2012 iMac is too old for use of AirDrop, so I’m copying and moving files with a flash drive. That seems slow and clumsy. Is there a better way?

Target Disk Mode would provide a direct connection between the two Macs:

Nothing simpler than that is available.

Before I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.3 my photos taken on my phone transferred to my iPad and iMac. Now nothing automatically transfers. Why?

This may be a solution. i take it your photos were in iPhoto. If so they will still be in your iPhoto library.
This library should be in your pictures folder, see below.
If you control-click on the library and from the drop down menu choose open, hopefully iPhoto will open and you will see your photos.
This worked for me, so I hope it works for you.

  • [vmware] Best way to share files between host and client

    Good afternoon!
I have successfully installed VMware server on my machine and set up a virtual machine, powering Windows XP for study issues (emulation via wine does not do the trick for me). The virtual machine runs fast and stable but does not meet my requirements unless I have two issues faced:
    First:
How to access a USB pendrive monunted by the host system properly within the client?
    Second:
What is the best way to share file system space between host and client? Should I set up a Samba share which is accessible for both host and client or is it save to grant my VM access to my physical hard disc as a whole (using it as a partition)?
Thanks for answers in advance, I have still quite a lot to learn, when it comes to VMs.
    Regards,
    ~cg

Do not setup your VMware to be able to access your physical disk as a whole. This would have you mounting the filesystem twice, corrupting it in the process.
You /can/ setup VMware with Sharing Folders that lets you share your filesystem (either / or just /home or something else) and that is what I would recommend.
As for accessing the pen drive from both operating systems at once, I'd say use the same Sharing Folders method. I always share /mnt so that I can access my cdrom/USB/etc from the vmware OS.
The sharing folders is basically the same as a samba share, but uses vmware's own method (HGFS). Samba is more secure (if you are worried about your VMware OS breaking from it's shell and attacking your real filesystem, which is unlikely). You need the vmware tools installed to make use of it.

  • Best way to transfer old files from iBook to iMac?

About two years ago, my key lime iBook died. Since it was pretty well used, I bought a G5 iMac and didn't worry much about the old laptop. I now want to get files from my iBook to my G5. I replaced the power input board and got the machine to start without incident.
I purchased a firewire to use Target Disk mode to get the files I want, but I'm having trouble making the two machines talk. The iMac can see the iBook and can tell me how much memory is left, but I can not pull up any specific files. The cursor spins and the finder is useless until I give up and disconnect the iBook.
My iBook is still using 9.0.4 while my iMac has 10.4.8. I think this gap could be the problem, but I'm not sure what to do about it.
Is there something I'm missing about TDM? Thanks for the help!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Your iBook does not support Target Disk Mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Probably you have to take apart your iBook (quite easy):
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/50.0.0.html
Then you can put the HD in a external enclosure and back-up your stuff.
The HD will fit in any USB or FireWire 2.5 inch IDE (or ATA) enclosure.
All this seems difficult, but it is easy!
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem.
(Please see the "helpfull" and "solved" button's above this message! Apple: Why reward points?.)

  • What is best way to transfer files from an older imac to a new one?

I have time machine on old intel imac.  I have 700gb used on old and don't want to transfer everything (trying to use this  "set up" process to also keep old unused stuff from transferring to the new imac). I can use firewire to transfer.  I have read the Apple support article on migration but I'm not clear on the ability to drag and drop only what I want to transfer. Thanks

Thanks.  Wonder if you can advise further:
As I noted, when I get around to starting  this transfer next week, I want to carefully move files to the new imac almost "one at a time" or groups of files at a time (not literally.)  Reason: 1. in order not to move some old files that I don't want on the new mac, but I'm reluctant to delete from old mac yet.  And 2. I'm fairly certain there is a corrupted file somewhere in the old mac. This is Apple Store Genius bar tech's conclusion after several visits and attempte over the last 6 months to do iphone 4 OS updates on this old mac which resulted in failure to update - received error "device not eligible for rebuild."  I was eventually able to perform the updates on my iphone 4 using my wife's newer Macbook, which she and my son use for their iphone 4s and with which they never encountered the same failure.  And yes, the latest ios5 update also failed on the old imac(again did the update using the macbook.
(BTW, I did the update using the macbook, then return to the old imac to restore my iphone using the itunes on it.)
Also, FYI -  this old imac is not a core 2 duo so it won't accept Lion.
So that was a long way of saying I don't want to chance moving a corrupted file to the new imac.
Therefore, can you direct me to instructions that would direct me to, as example, move this first, then this, then this, and so on.
I have several users on this old mac, although my user has the most files, many iphoto and imovie files and it is critical that my user files are moved successfully.
Also, I use time machine to back up on an external HD, and I use Carbonite too.
    Any advise appreciated.

  • Exchanging files between eMac and iMac Intel ( GUID Scheme hard drive bug )

    Hi,
I have to exchange big file and folder regularly between 2 Mac ( Home and work ), before it was easy because both computer are eMac ( 700 mhz combo drive OS X 10.3.9 ) I used my firewire backup drive to transferred files.
Now I change my home computer for a new iMac intel, naturally I had to format my firewire backup drive to GUID scheme to be able to boot with, but now when I connect this drive to the eMac it refuse to mount; when I connect it to the eMac a window appeared asking to format the drive, when I check with Disk Utility the application see the drive but refused to mount it.
Is there a hack to force the eMac to read and write to a GUID scheme drive?
    Cheers,
    Luc

Macs running an OS earlier than 10.4.x can't recognize the GUID partition table. The easiest fix is to update the eMac to run OS X 10.4.8
There are tips online for formatting an external drive to be bootable for both Intel and PPC Macs (e.g. this link) but it appears those tips still require the PPC Mac to be running 10.4.x

  • Sync AddressBook between iBook and iMac

    Hello everybody,
I am using an iMac and an iBook. On both machines I am using Mail therefore it would be nice to use the addresses which I have already entered into AddressBook iMac at the AddressBook iBook and vise versa.
Exist any tool which will do the job, or can I use the Automator of Tiger?
    Kind regards,
    Michael

    On the iMac:
Open the Sharing preference pane, click on Internet and enable sharing from Internal modem to Ethernet.
In the Sharing preference pane ensure that the firewall is off or enable web sharing.
On the iBook, configure the Network preference pane to use Ethernet and DHCP to get an IP address.

I mean fine, if u feel like giving up on the zen micro thats fine, i personally don't care if you're going to buy an ipod. for god sakes ipod isn't even the next alternati've mp3 players, theres plenty. • Suggestion on transfering data from iBook to iMac the old fashioned way

I was unable to transfer files, data, apps directly from my iBook to my new iMac. I'm wondering if someone can tell me how I can do this by using an external hard drive?
For traditional files I'm OK but I'm curious about moving things like my stored Entourage mail and my iTunes song lists, purchase history, etc.
Anyone have insight on this? Thanks!

    Hi,
Thanks so much for your help. Do you mind explaining this a little more (I'm dense). To help further clarify I have the following items that I want to transfer...
    * iTunes history (purchased, playlists, etc.)
    * Safari and Explorer bookmarks
    * Entourage -- everything, stored mail, address book, calendar, etc.
I tried moving these individual files (primariy MS Office) but it wouldn't allow me to. I'm thinking one of the issues is MSFT preventing me fro transfering Office from one machine to another so I will do a separate install of that suite directly onto the iMac - however I would be very bummed if I had to loose all my history on my previous Mac since the Setup Assistant isn't working.
Appreciate your further insight on this.

  • Difficulties transferring files between Lion and Leopard

    Hello all-
The short: Our two computers running Leopard can transfer files across our home network to all other computers with no problems, and can grab files from other computers with no problems. Our new iMac Lion can't do any of that.
The long: We have recently purchased a new iMac (Lion 10.7.3), and have connected our old 2006 iMac (Leopard 10.5.8) to the TV and stereo (and directly to our B/G/N Airport Extreme) for use primarily as a media server. We also have an MBP (Leopard 10.5.8). All three computers are shared on a home network, and I believe I have set up the sharing and permissions correctly.
From both Leopard computers I can transfer files back and forth, as well as access files on the other and bring them over. Additonally, from both Leopard computers I can do the same while accessing the iMac Lion- either transfer files to it, or connect to it and bring files over. This is what leads me to believe that the sharing is set up correctly.
However, when I am on the iMac Lion and try to do any of these processes with either of the Leopards, I get a confusing set of steps and ultimately, failure.
First, I when I try to transfer or copy a file I get a window asking:
Finder wants to make changes. type your password to allow this.
It automatically fills in the admin username for the iMac Lion. While it is waiting for me to enter the password, a progress bar pops up stating that it is "Preparing to copy to "(Location)", and then I enter the password.
As soon as I enter the password, a new window tells me that:
A newer item named “(filename here)” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you’re moving? (note- this 'file' has just been created, it is the 'newer item', and it contains zero kb of information).
and gives me three options: Keep both files, Stop, or Replace
If I choose Keep both files it immediately begins duplicating the empty version of the file and it will make thousands of duplicates in mere seconds. I must kill Finder in order to make it stop.
If I choose Stop the process simply quits.
If I choose Replace it says The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “” already exists. (the quotation marks are exactly like that with no filename inbetween).
Summary: I am at a loss as to how to proceed. I cannot seem to find why the iMac Lion cannot do anything to the Leopards, while the Leopards seem to have full abilities, even with the Lion. I have tried turning off AFP and turning on SMB to no avail.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It is incredibly helpful to be able to share files between our systems, as the iMac Leopard has PPC programs that I cannot install or run on Lion, and so I keep them around in case I need them. Plus, my wife uses the MBP Leopard for specialized research and many of the programs they use do not run with Lion.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Simple way to insert  custom Jquery Slideshows and Plugins in Muse

Hi guys, I know the Adobe Muse team is working hard to make this revolutionary tool better by the day. They have done a lot of foundation work to get this tool up to this state. I say congrates guys keep the good work on.
But before we get to the promised land. I know a lot of 'creative non-coders' still want to take up the challenge of doing some cool stuff spread around the internet nowadays such as jquery fullscreen image slideshow, fullscreen image jquery sliders, etc. But Muse is not there yet. I believe the next release will enable designers to take advantage of the height feature missing right now(I just believe so, no insider hint, please don't quote me.).
Okay let me not bore you.
Now I have noticed you can bring any slideshow into Muse if you have the bravery to do it. It's so simple. See this: www.dynamicarchitecturaldesign.com.
The slideshow was a backstretch jquery plugin with some custom javascript to load the page before displaying the page.
The trick is,  follow the instruction provided by the author of any of this script, especially the ones relating to the jquery-1.4min.js... jquery-1.7.min.js... upto the latest version that could possibly be available. Note: Adobe Muse also have almost the latest version of the jquery plugin. So after authoring your stuff in Adobe Muse, export as HTML then move and replace any of the code provided by the author of the code you intent to use with the one that Muse generates always:
    <script src="http://musecdn.businesscatalyst.com/scripts/1.1/jquery-1.7.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
This is often placed toward thge bottom section before the closing </body> and </html> tags. Move it up to the head section using notepad or DW. Though this is not the intended workflow by the Muse team, but it gives you the edge to do stuff you want to do.

Okay Maurya, am suggesting the Muse dev team can take a cue from the edge team. In the publishing setting of Edge their is an option for Framework via CDN! Introducing this feature into Muse will go along way to enhance the workflow of psuedo-developers using Muse  to cut down on web design time.  if I have some jquery codes for slideshows and so on that I have lifted from some places or purchased on the internet, I can conveniently place the codes as usual where they need to be and on export  indicate to Muse whether I want it to include its own code:
"http://musecdn.businesscatalyst.com/scripts/1.1/jquery-1.7.min.jswhich has been further modified in the new beta 2 release as:
    <script type="text/javascript">
       if (document.location.protocol != 'https:') document.write('\x3Cscript src="http://musecdn.businesscatalyst.com/scripts/1.1/jquery-1.7.min.js" type="text/javascript">\x3C/script>');
    </script>
in the export and during publish (a publish setting kinda of could be added to the preference area) or use my own framwork that I have included in the head section. So Muse will not include the above jquery musecdn...  in the publish version. That way you are giving us more control and winning more developers over to Muse and of course more money for Adobe . See screnshot in Adobe Edge:
