Simple : Which src MAC address when WLC bridges 802.11to 802.3 ?

When a WLC bridges 802.11 to 802.3, after extracting the original 802.11 frame from LWAPP, does it put the 802.11 senders
MAC address as the source addr in the new 802.3 frame ?
Or does it put the WLC's AP manager interface ? (Or the WLC's Management Interface) ?
If you refer to :-
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/technology/controller/deployment/guide/dep.html#wp1050985
One of the bullet points reads :-
After processing the 802.11 MAC header, the WLC extracts the payload (the IP packet from Host A), encapsulates it into an Ethernet frame, and then forwards the frame onto the appropriate wired network, typically adding an 802.1Q VLAN tag.
Should it include :-
and adds the MAC address of the Wireless client as the SOURCE MAC ADDRESS to the outgoing Ethernet Frame??
Also, will an ARP for a wireless client yeild the mac address of the WLC or the AP ???
Thanks

It looks like the src address of the original 802.11 client goes to the 802.3 frame as the source.
So am I correct in thinking that (in a flat topology, no L3 routing) the WLC will appear as to an attached switchport as trunk
(not necessarly 802.1q, but usually) with  multiple mac address learned from it.
Any host on the LAN will send a packet for DEST MAC, which will eventually be SWITCHED (via L2 switching), upto the WLC.
The WLC will then send it over lwapp to the AP, and the AP will send it to the client.
But as far as the mac-address-table is concerned of any switch directly attached to the WLC, it will see
all client MAC address for ALL wireless stations for ALL AP's... Correct ?
Thanks

  • HT5299 which is my ethernet mac address when in a retina with adapter?

    Hi,
I need to get my ethernet mac address, but i have a macboock pro retina displays that only have wireless connection. I bought the gigabit ethernet adapter, but i need the mac address because the University system that will provide me the net connection needs it to allow my computer to the net.
    Where can i find it?
    Thanks!

Plug the adapter into the MBP-R (*) and go to System Preferences > Network > Thunderbolt Ethernet > Advanced.
(*) You may also have to plug an Ethernet cable into the adapter at least once. Mine has been plugged in, and I didn't check the MAC address before the first time, so I can't tell for sure.

  • Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 is messing with MAC address when sharing my Wifi card

    Hello,
I'm using Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 to build a complete SharePoint Development environment.
All of my VM are following this scheme:
a "local" private network shared between the host and all VM, using a static IP address plan (192.168.10.0/24)
a RJ45 external network, attached to my physical ethernet card. This network uses DHCP protocol
a WIFI external network, attached to my wireless network card. This network also use DHCP protocol
When plugged on the ethernet card, I have no issue. Both the host and the guest OSes are getting a valid IP address.
However, when I try to connect on the wireless card, I get some weird errors. Actually, my guest OS are getting the same IP address than the host. This issue an IP address conflict.
Someone else got the same kind of behavior : Windows 8.1
Hyper-V : IP address conflict on Guest OS
I've checked my MAC address plan, and it seems correct.
Using WireShark (a tool I'm not used to I admit), I can see that all DHCP request of the guest os, are sending the host MAC address, and not the guest' one.
Does anyone have an answer to this weird behavior?
    Thanks,
    steve

    Hi Steve,
Please try the following step and then retry ipconfig /renew in your VM :
    1. Configure the WI-FI router to assign a static IP address to the host’s wireless network adapter(the IP should not be in DHCP Pool).
    2. On the host, configure the wireless network adapter to use a static IP address. The IP address will be the same address configured in step 1.
    3. Using Hyper-V Manager, create an external network switch that is bound to the host’s wireless network adapter
    Hope this helps

    Hi Elton,
First of all, thanks for your effort.
I will try your suggestion, but even if it works, it won't solve the actual root the issue.
Moreover, it is only relevant if I can control every wireless network I'm connecting to. What about if I travel and I connect with a customer wireless network? what about an hotel wireless network?
As I said, wireshark shows me DHCP requests using the wrong IP address. I strongly believe there's a bug somewhere between the wireless card driver and Hyper-v Mac-Bridge service.

  • Can sites know about my computers physical address or mac address when I use firefox 4

I want to know that does firefox expose my computers mac address or physical address to any site if that tries??

You have quite a few outdated plugins installed which potentially exposes your system to exploits.
So the first thing to do is to visit the [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ Plugins Check] page and update where necessary.
That IP address belongs to Comcast. Does that ring any bells?

  • Obtain MAC address!!!

    Hi!
I am accessing one of the instrument through LAN. I have defined it's IP address manually so I can access it. But I want to change it's IP address though LAN. I think if I get the MAC address of the instrument without giving IP address so I can do it. I have VI which gives MAC address when input IP address. I don't wanna give IP address. I wanna find instrument from MAC address on LAN.

LabVIEW does not have lowlevel access to network functions.
You could use system exec to do a ping sweep of the subnet followed by an arp table listing (arp -a), then parse the resulting output.
If the device supports it, you can then change its IP remotely address via arp -s.
Still, I don't quite see the need for all that. Can you explain why you need this?

I had the same problem yesterday and after many hours searching the web I ended up with this post that made me really desperate... But I didn't give up and while trying a new bios flash because of random crashes when in the bios, I noticed the obvious: you can change the MAC address when flashing
use the last version of the dos flasher with the parameters /nvmac:xxxxxxxxxxxx/wb after the name of the bios file; it's explained if you ask the help with the /help parameter. You can find the mac address on a stick on the parallel port.

  • How to capture System MAC address On internet

    Hi,
I am doing internet based application. I want to capture user system MAC address when ever user is logged in to my application over internet. So please tell me how i can capture users mac address. please help me.. with out this i cant i go further in my process. please help
    Regards,,

I think you're out of luck--the IP packets that come to your web server don't contain the MAC address; that would only be available on the LAN where the NIC resided. All the other components of the Internet don't use the MAC address (that's actually what the "Inter" part means).
I assume you're wanting to track unique users. You might try cookies or something of the like.
    Best of luck.

  • Is there any possible ways to get the MAC address?

    Hi guys:
I am writing servlets on the server side. Is there any possible ways to get the MAC address when a HTTP request come in? Thank you very much for any helps.
    all the best!

It is usually impossible to get the MAC address of the maker of a HTTP request in any programming language or system.
At best, you can get the MAC of the closest intervening router, firewall, whatever.
Are you sure you mean the MAC address? MAC looks like this: 8:ab:f0:0:71:bb:90 (Ethernet), or 01-23-45-67-89-ab (Token Ring), etc, depending on your network type.
In contrast, an IP address looks like this: 209.249.116.195. If you want the IP address, check out the javadoc for HttpServletRequest and ServletRequest. Caveat: load balancers, web caches, proxy servers, etc will mask the "true" peer's address. Don't do anything silly like try to use the IP address for security or authentication.

  • Switch learning mac addresses

In a video that I watched a few days ago someone explained a basic process of booting up a switch and how a switch learns mac addresses. He said something that I would like to discuss. I know... it is not important but want to clarify :)
    PC1---SW1----PC2
PC1 wants to send sth to PC2. In the video it was said:
'a frame arrives at SW1 and SW1 learns the mac address of pc1 but it does not know the mac address of pc2 so it will flood this frame to all ports'
My uderstanding is that it all starts with an arp message: pc1 does not know the mac address and sends an arp and it will allow the switch to learn both mac addresses: pc1 and pc2. I am too lazy to do it in wireshark but did that in PT and that's what I saw as well. After the arp - switch learnt both macs and did not flood the frame.
Am I correct? I know it is not important but... ;-)

It may be possible that there was some aspect of the switch environment in the video that would change the behavior (perhaps something like a long timer for the ARP cache in the PC and a short MAC ageing timer on the switch). But in general you are correct. PC1 would send an ARP request as a broadcast, the switch would learn the MAC of PC1 and forward the ARP request. When PC2 sends its response to the ARP request the switch would learn the MAC of PC2 and forward the ARP response. So the switch should have both MAC addresses when data traffic begins to flow.

we dont get any errors on the link but it fails to learn the mac address from the isp.
    checked the following.
    1. tried changing the SFP and the fiber.
    2. checked internally connecting back to back with another cisco device - works fine .
    3. checked with the isp for any static arp on their side and it is a no.
I am wondering why it fails to learn the mac-address when it can self ping its own ip address and also the layer stays up with no errors on both the sides.
    Thanks

Doesn't feel like a fiber/optical issue but a configuration mismatch on one of the end devices.

  • How do I set timed access for specific mac addresses?

My daughter tends to stay up late on social media long after we've asked her to go to bed, so I'd like to use the AirPort Utility to just shut off her internet access during set hours. It looks fairly straightforward to set up, however, I don't know how to find her MAC address for her iPod. Can anyone enlighten me?

iPods, IPhones, and iPads do not have a MAC Address.
On the iPod home screen, tap Settings
    Scroll down and tap General
    Tap About
Scroll down to locate the Wi-Fi Address
Use the WiFi Address of an iPod, iPhone, or iPad in place of the MAC Address when you are setting up rules in Timed Access.
