SimpleSave sd320

I was wondering if someone could help me in setting up my HP SimpleSave backup drive. Whilst it all works fine I have asked it to save .ctf files in the custom locations. Unfortuanately when I explore the drive I do not see these files. What do I have to do to be able to back up these files? What are the .ctf files? they are catalogues from a program called 'Whereisit' that catalogues the contents of cd's DVD's etc. These catalogues are located in the C drive - program files - Whereisit - Catalogues.
I would be very grateful for any help regarding this as I do not want to lose these files.
many thanks

Sorry to ask again, but can no one help with this?

  • HP SimpleSave External Hard Drive - Can't Access Files, Says to Re-Format

I have had a SimpleSave External Hard Drive for over a year now, and have never had any problems with it.
Recently, I am unable to access my files on the hard drive when it is attached to my computer.  It tries to load, and then gives me the error message "You need to format the disk in drive H: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?".  I don't want to format it because I don't want to lose all of the files that I have stored.  When I press "Cancel" i also get the error message "H:\ is not accessible. Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
I have not changed anything recently so I do not understand why it has all of a sudden stopped working.
I am using an HP notebook (G62 Notebook PC) and Windows 7 Home Premium operating system.
I am connected to the hard drive via USB.  I have tried turning off my computer and turning it back on, and unplugging the drive.  I have tried using other USB outlets.
My SimpleSave information: model no hp md1000h
    P/N HPBAAD0010HBK-00
The blue light is still blinking on the front of the hard drive.
I would like to access my files and get the external hard drive working properly again.  Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

I too have the exact same problem on my HP SimpleSave (sd500a) external hard drive. I got through to WDC, and they apparently support these devices now. They asked me to send them a copy of my purchase receipt in order to extend my warranty in their system in order to help me (ridiculous!!). I sent the scanned copy of the receipt to [email protected], and got an auto-reply that they will get back to me within 1 day. I also went on their website, and they refer to the device in their system as 'ED Caviar Blue EIDE Hard Drive'. It has the same serial number as my product from HP, so I guess they have acquired these products or at least support of them (?). In any case, I'm freaking out because I have tons of family pictures, video and my entire iTunes library on the device. If any one is able to get help for this, please respond. I am desperate to get this resolved.

  • Problem with HP SimpleSave not working

I have a 1TB HP SmartSave external HDD, before hand it was with my father and I recently tried to use it again. It's not working, and here are the details:
    - When it's plugged in my laptop recognizes it as a CD drive, but one with only 884 KB of space
    - Upon clicking the drive, the only thing there is the HP Launcher (552 KB), and I'm guessing this is the problem.
    - Obviously, clicking the launcher does nothing.
    - I tried looking into the problem and saw the solution about downloading the SimpleSave's software and launching it from inside the HD, but I can't do that because according to my laptop the HD only has 884 KB of space. Any attempt to copy files to the location or extract them there comes up with a "not enough space" error.
    - I'm also unable to delete the current HP Launcher application or format this thing.
So, any ideas? I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!

    Hello malehussey,
The HDD is not being seen and the limited space is the CD emulator thats attached to the drive being reported.
The CD emulator is a bridge that has to be used for SimpleSave to work.
Have you tried using it in another computer to rule out any issues with your laptop?
If it does work, we can go from there.
Can you tell if the hard drive spins when plugged in?
Also go into Disk Management to see if the HDD is recognized or shows as Unallocated Space. Right click My Computer and choose Manage/Disk Management (depending on which operating system you have).
If it does not show at all, its most likely that the hard drive has met its end of life.
You could go further (if you like tinkering) and tear the case apart, remove the CD card attached to the HDD and hook the HDD directly to a SATA port on a desktop type of PC with a SATA cord. Also you can use a USB to SATA adapter or a HDD Dock to plug the drive into a laptop. Then you can see if the drive will work properly. If it does, then theres a problem with the CD card or connection in the case. The case alone cannot be used to connect the HDD without the CD card installed because of the hookups.
If you can extract the files saved on the SimpleSave drive, you will not be able to use any SimpleSave backups (and possibly any other files saved either) unless you have the CD card hooked to the drive first. The CD card encrypts and decrypts the data on the SimpleSave drive.
Bottom line, its most likely time to buy another external drive.

Hi, I have an HP Simplesave sd500a external portable hard drive.
The drive failed, so I replaced it with another drive.

Do I need to install new software on my computer to force a format?

  • (New thread) HP SimpleSave md1000h External Hard Drive - Can't Access Files,

New thread on same old unaswered issues from others.
My desktop crashed.  It  needs new harddrive.
I religiously backup my info everyweek on my simplesave md1000h
However, before I buy a new computer or replace the harddrive on my old computer, I want to at least get my Quicken Checking account info up and running on my wife's  laptop.
When I plug in the usb for the md1000h into the laptop,
it recognizes the  hardware is there but, does not show any files.
I presume my laptop needs the software to run the simple save.
However, there is nothing out there on the HP site.
Can anyone confirm that this is the issue...that I need the software...if so, where can I download it from.
I beleive the softweare came preloaded on the md1000....now I cant access that software....go figure.
Any help is appreciated.   Thanks.  Greg

  • Software for the HP SimpleSave md1000h External Hard Drive

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting a question, so i got a hp simplesave md1000h external hard drive that it was given to me by a friend it was working fine, couple weeks ago i let my aunt do a back up on her computer and when i got it back only the auto run was available but nothing else. Im thinking that she erased the rest of the hard drive information or she deleted everthing without knowing how it works.  Is there anyway i can fix it? like getting a new software for it so i can start from scratch, please feel free to contact me donaltalv_9  hotmail. thanks.

Hi Don, The SimpleSave drive is no longer supported as you may already know and as such, the download links were taken down. This user has posted the driver files on the link below and thus, you can simply add them back into the drive directly to replace the missing files.HP-SimpleSave-md1000h-External-Hard-Drive Those are copies he saved from the original download. They are not mine nor HP's.

  • Simplesave sd320a does not show saved files or directory structure, disk full?, I can restore

I was saving files from an old win95 machine to bring them to a new laptop which is windows 7.  I plugged in the drive which is not full and I can only see the hp launcher.  In drive properties this drives shows 100 pct full.
I can and did pull up an old simple save backup and restore pictures.
The windows 7 machine is a locked down work machine.  Maybe the file structure was changed by the windows 95 machine and now my windows 7 machine can not see the root directory?
I have not written to the drive since storing all of the pictures from the 95 machine and unplugging the external hard drive.
I am looking for help on how to see the files in the root directory that I simply use the copy command to move them on to the external drive.

    OldGhias,
Have you found a solution yet? I don’t know if I will be of any help but I was curious and no one else has chimed in yet.
I don’t quite understand all of your statement.
To clarify, you were making SimpleSave backups from Win95 and cannot see them all on the Win7 laptop?
    Or
You were copying files over (SimpleSave utility not used) and you cannot see those files on Win7 but you can on the Win95 machine?
Do you have another Win7 machine you could connect the external to, to see if the files are still not showing (one that is not locked for work)?
On the drive that shows full, can you see it in Disk Management showing the correct size of the drive and also another CD drive? Not your real CD/DVD drive, it’s actually a CD emulator that is attached to the HDD for encrypting the backups and all SimpleSave’s have them.
Lastly, did you reformat the SimpleSave drive to Fat32 first?
My understanding is that USB support was quite limited on Win95 machines. Since Win95 is Fat32 and the SimpleSave drive is by default NTFS, I would think it would not work.

  • Ac adapter for hp simplesave model MD2000h

lost or misplaced my ac adapter for hp simplesave  model MD2000h.  The external HD does not have any spec requirements written by the serial/model number.  I don't remember how the ac adapter looks like either.  Help?

    Hi Silvana,
To find the right adapter there are a couple of ways we can do that. First, I found a link to the user guides for your external drive and from the User Manual I got support information. Their website is http://hpsupport.wdc.com and their toll free phone number is 1-866-444-7407. Try contacting them and they should be able to tell you the correct adapter.
    Link to User Guides:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=4023092&
You can use the actual product number which you should be able find on a sticker on the external hard drive or the box it came in. If you find that product number you can order the part from HP Parts Store and I have included a link below.
    http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/
I believe that your best option would be to contact their support.

  • HP SimpleSave external disk 1 Tb, "no access to a disk"

    HP SimpleSave 1 Tb, HPBAAD0010HBK-01, Model N: hp md1000h, S/N:[Personal Information Removed]
Virtual HPLauncher disk works and program HPLauncher.exe is started also. The system (Win7) sees the HP SimpleSave 1Tb disk. In properties of the disk shows the dimension of 0 byte and then jumps out a window "error in data (CRC). There is no access to a disk." After that it suggests to format a disk. I refuse. How to recover the disk?

  • SimpleSave portable backup drive--doesn't start automatically

I have the SimpleSave portable drive (Model sd320a)  and have used it successfully.  However, although when I first starting using it the drive automatically started when I plugged it into my computer, it no longer does.  I must have changed some setting on my computer, but I can't figure out what I did.  I now cannot get the device to start.  I followed the instructions in the user manual (to start it through Vista Computer and clicking on the icon), but four file folders just come up and nothing I click on will start the application.
I use a Dell laptop with Vista Premium.  Can you tell me how to fix this problem so the drive starts automatically again?  Thanks.

I deleted some files off my backup drive [Simple Save] and now I find I have nothing on the drive at all. How do I replenish it to when I bought it a few weeks ago? Lanc

  • HP SimpleSave SD500a cannot access files

I cannot access any of the files/folders that I had backed up HP SimpleSave SD500a USB disk. I backed up by files before using XP, Vista and Windows 8.1 and have important information on it.
I had to restore my Dell 1545 laptop OS to factory defaults due to problems with Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and took a backup of all my files onto the SD500a where I store all my other backup data and verified that the backed up copy was fine.
After restoring Vista and installing updates, which included Vista SP2 I went to restore my backed up files. I connected my USB drive to the laptop and I noticed that Vista automatically installed the driver and 2 new drives appeared: CD Drive G: HP Launcher and Local Disk H:.
I then ran a virus scan using ESET Smart Security software that I had newly installed on the Vista laptop and found that the scan finished in no time. I changed the parameters to “in-depth” and this too finished quickly. Now I started to suspect that something had gone awry.
I could not access both of them in Explorer. I checked the drive properties and I got a message: H:\ is not accessible Data error (cyclical redundancy check). Drive G: is HP Launcher. I noticed that a “blue” light on the USB drive keeps flickering on most of the time when I open Explorer. At one point I did get a message if I wanted to format the disk which I declined.
I checked the status of both drives (G and H) in Disk Manager. Disk G: file system CDFS, capacity 1Mb, free 0Mb, status healthy and H: file system RAW, capacity 465.11Gb, free 465.11Gb, status healthy.
I tried connecting the SD500a to a desktop with Windows 8.1 and got the same result. I am not sure if the file formats changed after I connected it to my Vista laptop following the restore of the OS (NTFS vs CDSF/RAW) but I don't know what they were originally.
I am hoping that someone will be able to help to resolve this issue so that I can access my files.

If in fact you have to create a new volume and start all over, there are several data recovery programs that are free that should work just fine. Like I said, it wont get every file back, but it should get most of them.

    Personal commentary:
I do not trust ANY automatic backup service that runs in the background. I also don't want my backups compiled into a proprietary format that I have to use that specific program to access that backup with. Also for reasons you just experienced.
Although there a many different opinions about backing up files, One method that is minorley cumbersome but tried and true is Mark Russinovich's Sync Toy 2.1.  It is not automatic, I have to initiate it manually each time. But it will find and add/replace updated files when told to do so in Synchronise, Echo or Contribute modes. I can set up several categories to backup separately.  I just feel more confident its done when I manually do it myself and the files are accessible as if I drag and dropped directly.
    Just my humble opinion.
    Hope it helps. Good luck.

  • HP SimpleSave used as external drive - suddenly back to unformatted unusable drive - LOST ALL DATA

I was in the process of moving photos from my laptop to my external 1TB SimpleSave drive and all of a sudden the drive lost it's format and appears as the HP Launcher and an unusable 'Local Drive' (my drive name is gone, all my data is gone including the photos I just copied over an hour ago).
Are these drives unstable? I've hardly used the thing and am now wary of using it. Is there a way for me to recover the lost formated drive? I have a second copy of most of the data, but I just lost 500 photos.

Ok, i have found a solution...
What has happened is Windows has changed the hard drive from its original form, a NTFS format to a RAW format.
According to other forums, this happens when Windows detects a partially incomplete re-format attempt. I do remember formatting the external a week after i got it, but it seemed fine???? moving on....
From what i have come across, RAW is an obsolete format that XP, Vista and Windows 7 dont recognize anymore... short of having an old pc that runs Win 95, Win 98 which WILL recognise it, i tried several different ways, heaps of different recovery tools etc etc...
i "found" a program called Power Data Recovery! It rules so much!
anyway, i installed it, and done the following -
from the program front screen -
    - Advanced Recovery
    - click on the drive (in my case its displaying as Physical Drive, 930.86Gb)
    - click on full scan
Initially it said it was going to take 600hours but bare with it... it will speed up...
i was too curious to wait for the full scan so i stopped it at like 7%, then previewed the files it had recovered, checked the tick box on a couple of mp3 i wanted to preview, and clicked save...
    -saved them to my desktop
-tested the files (mp3s) through winamp and they played fine!
I am just re-starting the recovery process from scratch and will leave overnight.. once completed, I will transfer the recovered files to another external, then re-format the affected external drive again, then transfer the files back to its FIXED home... DONE!
    Hope this helps ya'll...

  • What is a hp SimpleSave component?

I cannot respond to this question  related to without proper introduction of the location below for a
    feild.

    Hello Newlifepsalm51,
I would like to help you with HP's SimpleSave external hard drive. The SimpleSave is perfect for plug-and-play instant storage and makes data backup so simple anyone can do it. The included backup software runs right off the drive. The minute you plug it in to a USB port, it automatically finds all your valuable data and begins backing it up. Can you please let me know what I can help you with? I will watch for your reply.

  • HP simplesave ca94304 keep data on hard drive from PC and now use with Mac computer

Hi, I've recently purchased a new Apple Macbook Air and I have this HP simplesave ca94304 1 TB Ext Hard drive that I would like to be able to use for backing up my new MacbookAir. I have had this hard drive for a few years and have the backups from my PC formated laptop on it already. How can I keep this information on the hard drive and still back up the macbook Air?

    Agree with what Dragon-fur said.
    I will add...
There are numerous queries on here where consumers report these drives not being recognized suddenly. Their end of life seams to be coming to pass now.
Once that happens, you cannot retrieve the data because SimpleSave drives are not like a traditional external drive.
Also, if you only have your data backed up on one drive (one backup), you dont have a backup. WHEN that drive fails, your data is gone.  A good rule of thumb is to have 3 backups using a combination of different ways to do so.
    Good luck.

  • Unable to open SimpleSave software on Windows 7

I couple of years back I purchased an HP SimpleSave md1000h hard drive and it worked fine.
I had not used it for a while, and when I plug it in now the software does not initialize.  I have run diagnosit tests and they have passed.  I can see the HP Launcher.exe under Computer (in Explorer) but nothing happens when I try and open it.
The links to downloading the software in previous posts no longer work. Please help!

    Hello Beach Girl.
That SimpleSave drive is working and recognized by Windows, it just wont initialize the backup software?
If so, reloading that software may help but HP does not support those drives anymore.
Ill send you a private message as well.
