Simplest way to move address book info from Tiger to Leopard machine?

I recently acquired a white MacBook that runs leopard 10.5.6.
I've not found an easy way to move my Tiger address book info to the new machine.
I tried copying the address book from tiger onto a dvd and subsequently a flash drive, but leopard doesn't want any part of that.
There is likely a way to export the vcards from the tiger app., but the help menu isn't much help in that regard.
All help appreciated.

you can copy the folder /users/username/library/application support/address book from the old computer to the new one. then start address book and it will look like it did on the old computer. another option is to make one vcard. start AB on the tiger machine, select all your contacts and drag them to the desktop. that will make one big vcard with all the contacts. move it to the other mac and import it to AB there.

  • Can I import address book info from mac 10.5 to 10.7

Can I import address book info from Mac 10.5 to 10.7?   It tells me "You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X.  You have Address Book 4.0.6."

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Try moving just the folder at Mac HD/users/~/Library/Application Support/Address Book from 10.5 to the same location in 10.7.
Or in Address Book on the old Mac go to the File menu and choose Export Contacts Archive, copy that file to the new Mac and in Address Book on the new Mac go to File menu Import, browse to the archive file on the new Mac and choose it.

  • What is the simplest way to export Address Book into a spreadsheet (Numbers) and get all the information including physical address?

Can anyone help with this?  I've exported the address book, but all the information does not appear.  I've expanded out the columns but still don't get the home address.
Also, formatting is an issue with phone numbers.  Not all phone numbers were entered the same way in the Address Book.  Is there a way to change the entire column with a particular cell format?

Oh, I meant Leopard does do more than Tiger Server.
I don't know enough about Server, even less abut Syncing.
SL is to new, not enough time to iron out the kinks yet imho.
One day SL will be better than Leo, but...

  • How To Move Address Book Contacts From An Earlier Mac To An IMac?

I am having zero luck trying to move the multitude of contacts from address books on a G4 (won't open at all with my new IMac) and an Intel MacBook Pro (will open on the PB Pro but I can't copy it or its contracts to disk) to my new IMac with Snow Leopard. Can it be done? Can these records be exported and brought to my IMac for importing? If so, how, preferably in bulk?
I am going to try to put my Address Book from my G4 back on a G4 (where it will open) and see if I can export any files in bulk, to put on a CD and copy to my IMac for the next step, whatever it may be.
Anybody have any suggestions how to export and move these records in bulk??? Thanks!

    Greetings Gina,
If there are no pre-existing contacts in the Addressbook on the computers you are moving your original addressbook to, then you can use the File > Export > Addressbook Archive feature. This will create a self contained copy of all your Addressbook contents. Take this file (Email it, thumb drive it, burn it to a CD, put it on your iDisk, File Share it, etc. etc. etc) to whatever computer you want the addressbook on and simply double-click. It will overwrite (erase) the current Addressbook contents and put your original addressbook in it's place. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AddressBook/5.0/en/9158.html
If you DO have addressbook contacts on the other computers that you do not wish to erase then highlight all the contacts in the original addressbook and choose File > Export > vCard. This will make a group vCard of all the contacts. Then take that to the new computers and double-click. This will add all the contacts in. Keep in mind if you already have some of these contacts in your addressbook you will need to get rid of them by going to Card > Look for duplicates and either deleting them or merging them. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AddressBook/5.0/en/9160.html
You could also sync the Addressbooks across all the computers using MobileMe if you are a MobileMe member. However I think the export / import options I mention above would be quicker and cleaner if this is your first time moving the information over. http://www.apple.com/support/mobileme/ (click on the sync section)
    Hope that helps.

  • Can I restore my address book info from a backed user file app support?

My hard drive crashed, no data recovered. I had my user file backed up to an ExHD. New HD installed, put Leopard on it. Is there a way I can restore my contacts to my Address Book through my backed up user file on my ExHD? I can not locate an actual archive file of the address book.

If you were using the same version of Mac OS X on both drives (10.5 to 10.5, 10.4 to 10.4, etc), then you only need to move a copy of the Home/Library/Mail folder from the backup and replace the existing Home/Library/Mail folder on the new HD with it.
Be sure that Mail is not running when you do this.

  • How can I import address book info from old mac to new one?

Just got a macbook, and migrated all the info as per instructions. Now I need to get all the info from my old address book to the new one. Spent about 6 hours today trying to figure this out, and an hour of that was spent on the phone with a friendly but clueless customer service rep. Managed to get all the vcards transferred, but no group info. Since this is for my business, I need to get this taken care of ASAP--- help, anyone? Thanks!!!

Exporting vCards from Address Book partially preserves group information - it puts it in the notes field as Categories, which is not very useful. I suggest you export one group at a time. I don't think you can import directly into a group, so create a group, import the cards for that group, then select all the cards in the "Last Import" pseudo-group and drag them to the appropriate group.
If some of your contacts are in multiple groups the duplicates will be spotted on import. Unless you have hundreds of groups it should not be to much of a pain. Otherwise look at Gwenhiver.net - Applications - Address Book Exporter - it may preserve groups on re-import (but I don't know).

  • Importing e-mail addresses and Address Book info from a Tiger back up drive

    HI,
I've upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. How do I import/sync info from Address Book and e-mail address I've been in contact with from the back up drive that I made before the change?
    thanks

    Greetings,
If you want to import the information from Address Book in Tiger, you must first open Address Book there, then export all your contacts as a single vCard file, and copy the com.apple.AddressBook.plist file from Home/Library/Preferences.
In Leopard, copy the preferences file to the same location you got it from in Tiger, then launch Address Book and drag & drop the vCard file you made onto the open Address Book window to import all those contacts.

  • Retreiving mail and address book info to new machine

    Hi,
My main machine, the iMac is in for repairs. Before it went I backed up the entire HD to an external HD.
I'm now working from an iBook. I'd like to recover past mail messages and address book info from the external HDD to the iBook.
I have imported mailboxes, as advertised, but the messages within those boxes did not import.
I have imported address book info, but they were not my addresses (or rather very few of them were) Mostly they were for Apple employees!
I didn't separately back-up or otherwise archive msgs and addresses, just copied the entire iMac HDD to the external.
Can anyone give me an idiot's guide to moving my msgs and addresses to the iBook from the external HDD?
    Thx in advance.

for the email issue, once you had imported the accounts did u rebuild the inbox? u will be surprised what may appear.
My best way for moving mail from one machine to another is just to copy the mail folder in the users library and the com.apple.mail.plist and just reopen mail and it will apppear. Same with address book, copy from library the folder called Address Book Plug-Ins, inside Application Support, the fiolder called Address Book and the com.apple.AddressBook.plist.
Otherwise a simple way of doing the address book is just to back up your database from the file menu before you swap computers and then use the restore from backup option.
    Hope that helps

  • Access Address Book data from terminal

    Hi everyone,
I was wondering if there is a way to access Address Book data from the terminal. For instance, I would
need a command that would output an address of a given person.
Thanks in advance for your input

this script could be used in Terminal (save the code below as
"getaddress" and mark it as executable):
    case $# in
    2) firstname=$1; lastname=$2;;
    *) echo 'Usage: getaddress <firstname> <lastname>' 1>&2; exit 1 ;;
    esac
count=`osascript -e "tell application \"Address Book\" to count (people whose first name is \"${firstname}\" and last name is \"${lastname}\")"`
    case $count in
    0) echo "$firstname $lastname is not in Address Book." 1>&2; exit 1;;
    1) ;;
    *) echo "There are multiple entries for $firstname $lastname in Address Book (unhandled error)." 1>&2; exit 1;;
    esac
osascript -e "tell application \"Address Book\" to get formatted address of address of first person whose first name is \"${firstname}\" and last name is \"${lastname}\""

    Hello hbell,
is there any reason that you do not want
to upgrade to v10.5.? Suggest you call
    1-800-275-2273 Apple Support. Automated call
yet if you call back you can get in touch with an
Apple Software Specialist. They may be able to ship
you Leopard so that you can synch your new iPhone
to you own computer. Have the serial numbers of your
Mac and iPhone written down and ready for them.
As far as transferring data to your husbands MacBook
so that you can sync your iPhone on it I am really not
sure. Seems like a lot of trouble to get your data onto
    your iPhone.
    Good Luck,
    A

  • How to move Mail and Address book content from 10.3 emac to 10.5 iMac

How do I move Mail and Address book content from my old 10.3 emac to my new 10.5 Leopard iMac directly, or do I have to move the names etc, one by one?
    Richard

I cannot find a migration assistant. I have copied the Mail and Address Book applications over from 10.3 to 10.5 and tried using mailboxes import, but 10.5 Mail will not accept any of the options. The same for address book. Can you give more specific instructions?
The applications, Mail and Address Book, don't actually store your data in the application. So, moving the applications over to your new computer will have no useful effect and could be detrimental if you replaced the newer versions with the old.
Migration Assistant is in you Utilities folder and should have asked to be run during the installation.
Your Mail data is stored in yourUserName/Library/Mail. The Address Book data is stored in yourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. If your new installation is blank with no data, you can actually replace those directories on the 10.5 version with the old. For Mail, you also have to get the com.apple.mail.plist file from your old username/Library/Preferences/ folder and put it in the new 10.5 folder of the same name. Once that is done, when you open Mail and Address Book, they will update the data to the new format.
Migration Assistant will do all of this for you.
EDIT: Based on roam's comments, you may have to move the Mail manually. You can also just bring the Mail directory over to the 10.5 machine and use Mail's Import command to get all the mail out of the old Mail directory.

  • Lost Mail and Address Book ikons from HD

Preparing to upgrade to Tiger OX 10 from Panther. Recommended backup all vital info. In transfer process, both Mail and Address Book ikons from HD to backup Superdisk repeatedly came up Error 50. Only success was to lose both ikons from HD and Question Mark on Address Book in dock rendering it useless. Now have Mail and a Mail copy ikon on Desktop that will not open. Likewise an Address Book ikon and four copies on Desktop that will not open. Fortunate that Mail ikon in Dock still operates allowing acess to Mail and Address Book on Mail site.
Would like to move forward. Help for an average computer user would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the delayed response to your e-mail. Thank you very much for taking the time to addressing my problem.
After posting the question the hard drive further deteriorated to the point where the computer became inoperative. Ended up with a new computer and a major challenge in transferring info from old to new computer. After a long day with two friends and computer programmers by day, we succeeded in retrieving and transferring the info. Whee!
Thanks again for taking the time to address my question.

  • Syncing to a new computer (and keeping iCal and Address Book info intact)

Well, after a few years my old iMac G5 finally died. Fortunately, I was able to grab all of the information off the hard drive and load it onto an external. I have a new iMac and I'm pretty happy.
However, I also have an 64GB iPod Touch that is currently synced to the computer that just died. Now, I want to sync this iPod to my new computer. Now, I have all of my music, photos, and apps and such on my new computer so I'm not trying to pull that off of my iPod. What I'm more concerned about is my iCal and Address Book. I use both often and have a lot of information in them. My new computer has none of this information.
So, what do I need to do sync my iPod with my new computer without losing my iCal and Address Book info? I still have access to the data on my old hard drive, but not the computer itself (if that helps). Hopefully I can get some help soon because I really want to try out OS4...
(Also, I want to make sure that I transferred my Apps correctly. I moved the files I found from my old iTunes folder onto my new iTunes. They seem to show up okay and have received updates but I wanted to make sure that when these apps synced to the iPod again that they would work okay. I'm most concerned about purchased apps and apps that have saved data like Plants Vs. Zombies).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod will be erased during the first sync.
Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
