Simplest Windows solution to run Quicken and Quickbooks
I need to figure out how to run Windows on either my Mac Pro (currently 10.6.8, but upgrading to Mountain Lion very soon) or an old MacBook Pro (late 2006 Intel, core 2 Duo) that I'm hoping I can get to run Lion on.
The only software I plan to run on Windows is Quicken and Quickbooks as their Mac versions are simply so inferior and, after much research, I haven't been able to find suitable alternatives.
I know my way around a Mac BUT am not geeky and don't have the time or energy to figure out complex workarounds.
I am concerned that running Windows on my machines could expose me to viruses and malware, which Apple documents warn can happen with BootCamp but it sounds like different programs to run Windows have different levels of risk??
The other option could be to buy a cheap PC, already with Windows, simply to run my financials. Wonder what people think of that solution in terms of ease and cost?

You can run Windows natively using Bootcamp Assistant, or you can run Windows using a Virtual Machine such as Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. When running Windows you must run anti virus software to protect your Windows installation.
You must buy Windows regardless of how you install it. Using a Virtual Machine will be easier and will work fine for your singe program.
Buying a Windows PC is also a good option but you will still need anti-virus software.

Yes you can but you need to partition the drive into at least 2 separate drives.
To do that you need to use a Windows PC to do the first partitioning. Say you split the drive into two partitions each 1TB (or close to 1TB) each.
Partition fand format both partitions on a Win PC as one NTFS and the other FAT32.
Then move it to the Mac and Reformat the FAT32 partition Mac Extended (Journaled) with a GUID Partition Table.
I have that same drive and that is what I did originally with it. I now have it just for the Mac as I have other externals for the Win systems.

I've just received the Quicken version for Lion and it crashed on four of my five files. The 5th file didnot show all the quotes. I searched the web and found that the new version is having problems with the Quote file. I tried the suggestion from Intuit. See following URL.

With the above you loss all your security quotes and need to repopulate the data file. I suggest that you try the following process on a Snow Leopard system.
To avoid a corrupt Quote file perform the following before moving to Lion. This process will give the Lion version a fresh Quote file.
1. Start Quicken with you data file
2. Open File > Export > Selected Items to QIF...
3. Check only the box for Securities
4. Quick Quicken
5. Hold down the Control key and single-click (or right-click) your data file
6. Select Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu
7. Control + click on the Quotes file, select Move to Trash
8. Start Quicken with you data file
9. Open File > Import > From QIF...
10. Quick Quicken
Now all my files run on the Lion version with all the quote values. -
CPU on windows 7 is running 100% and cannot sync without locking up iTunes
The CPU is running at 100% on my PC whenever I connect to the iPad and the AppleMobile device service is running at 47% whne even iTunes is not up or any thing is connected. I also cannot access the apple store from iTunes.
I also have an iPhone4 with same issues. I think this all started when I upgraded iTunes to 10.4.0.80. Any Ideas I have googled to know avail.I tried many things for a week, no luck.

I currently have IE 10 and I own a small business using services from 1&1.com. I've heard that Firefox is a better supported internet browser (than IE 10) when viewing various websites like 1&1.com. I also do a lot of work using Quicken and QuickBooks (using their latest systems) plus Excel and Work documents.
FYI: I also have been having IE 10 freeze problems when I have a number of tabs (around 7 or more) open in IE 10 at the same time. I don't believe it's a virus issue as my anti-virus/firewall system (Webroot Secure Anywhere Complete) hasn't detected anything and I regularly clean my system's cookies/browsing history.I doubt is there is any benefit to upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 just for Firefox at this time. IMO, Windows 7 enjoys greater compatibility with Firefox for the time being.

I found out after the install of LION, that it does not support Rosetta, which runs Quicken and the classic AOL software and a myriad of other apps.
Can I go back to Snow Leopard? Is there a way to retrieve my thousands of saved E mails, which are saved on my Mac?
I still see the filing cabinet with my screen name but cannot get them to open.

Lion may roar, but the fact it does not support apps like quicken means it purrs.I had the Apple store wiped out my hard drive and I restore my last hard drive downloard by first placing Snow leopard DVD in the DVD drive and holding "C" when turning on the machine then I follow the instructions. I am back on snow leopard and trying out two finance software to replace Quicken for mac 2007. I am trialing Quicken essentials and ibank. They are both compatable with LION. So when I am ready will download Lion again. Also, Micorsoft Office needs to be 2011 version for it to work on Lion

I am running Parallels and Quickbooks on my macbook. After an unfortunate encounter with macprotector (I didn't install it) which I was able to get off my computer, I now cannot access Quickbooks. It is trying to open it (unsuccessfully) in my Disk Utility. Any suggestions?
I figured this out. There is an extra step now which I assume is from the iTunes update. There is an option below where you check to sync Audiobooks to 'Include Audiobooks from Playlists'. I checked the playlist f and now my book is all the way on my phone instead of just pretending.
Seems redundant but what do I know...At least I can listen to my book finally. -
Since installing Parallels 7 and Windows 7 (to use Quicken), my imac and the virtual computer run very slow. Is there a good fix?
Start up while holding Command R and run Disk Utility, check the SMART status and repair your hard drive.

You can run Windows 7 in Parallels. You do not need to run Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows if using Parallels. Visit the Parallels site for instructions regarding running Windows in Parallels.

I had the same problem. The fix I found was to open itunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT), click Edit, Preferences, and then the "Store" tab. Uncheck the box that says "Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases". This got me running, but unfortunately I have a movie on the cloud that I now can't see.

How do I run Windows programs on my iMac and my MiniMac?
I have a new iMac and a new MiniMac at the office. Can I run Windows programs on these computers, such as QuickBooks? If so, how do I do it?
If you want to run MS Windows applications on your iMac and Mac Mini you need a license of MS Windows at a minimum. Then you need to decide how you want to run the apps, you can use Boot Camp which allows you to install MS Windows on your computer and then boot your computer as either a MS Windows machine or OS X machine. The advantage of this is there is no cost (except for MS Windows) as Boot Camp comes with every Mac. You will find Boot Camp Setup Assistant in (Applications - Utilities - Boot Camp Setup Assistant). The other solution is virtualization software such as Parallels or VM Ware Fusion. The advantage of virtualization software is you can run MS Windows and OS X simultaneously. This is ideal if you are not doing graphics intensive applications such as 3D gaming, CAD/CAM or 3D renderings. For applications like QuickBooks it would be great.
The downside of running MS Windows on your Mac is that portion of the computer will be susceptible to all the problems PC's have such as Virus's and other malware. So whatever solution you get you need to also get anti-virus software and other anti-malware. The upside is if Windows becomes diseased this in no way affects OS X.
Finally your best solution is to look for OS X versions of your applications. I know there is a OS X version of QuickBooks however I have no idea how Intuit's licensing works, you would need to contact Intuit to ask that question.

Whenever I connect to the iTunes store i receive an error message "iTunes has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." This causes iTunes to close. I am using iTunes version 10.5.0.142 on a Windows Vista (64) PC. I have reinstalled iTunes selecting the "repair" option and also uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. Any help will be deeply appreciated. Thank you. Below is the result of the diagnositc.

iTunes is unable to run. I tried to run iTunes and a message comes up that says "the iTunes library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file." what is the solution to unlock it ?!

Itunes will no longer work on my Windows 8 PC. When I attempt to start the program a message says: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. I have tried to uninstall iTunes but the Windows uninstaller will not delete the program I get a message that says: A network error occurred while attempting to read file: C:\Windows|Installer|iTunes.msi. Whentrying to uninstall iTunes (the first program that must be uninstalled per the instructions) I get a message: A network error occurred while attempting to read file: C:\Windows|Installer|iTunes.msi. I can't even uninstall iTunes?
(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page).

After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
(2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
(5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time? -
Firefox no longer connects to internet on my mac, and windows machines, after v18. I've tried several solutions from Mozilla support and nothing works. Firefox can't even connect to Mozilla for updates. Firefox just sits on the default search page and attempts to connect to websites by typing URLs, or by clicking on the links on the default search page don't work.
You could try the following:
* Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version)
* Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs, then add it back. For detailed instructions, see Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet.
