Simplified DRM Solution

I am looking for a simple digital rights management solution. Is there a  way to tie a PDF document to a specified computer so another computer  may not open the file?
The solution does not have to be foolproof, just a preventative  roadblock to help stop people from sharing the file (passwords wont work  because users will simply share passwords). Also, functionality of  Reader 10 must be preserved.
I found a solution here:
http://www.armjisoft.com/?page=pdfownerguard
The server edition satisfies my needs but as you can see it is $5,000.
The solution also needs to be scalable to a large amount of PDFs being sold.
Please help,
ThankyouThankyouThankyou!

I just replied to your question over at acrobatusers: http://acrobatusers.com/forum/security/pdf-security-simple-drm-solution#comment-81849

  • OT: DRM solution

    Hey there,
A client of mine is creating a specific training software and
    is selling
that over his website. He currently has a system in place
    where he uses
encrypted WMV files (essentially screen captions with a voice
    over)
which can only be played if the client downloads a license.
    There is no
time limited on the license, the videos are only playable on
    the
computer that has been used to purchase the license.
My client is dealing with a lot of mid size companies which
    purchase
typically more than one license, so he would like to keep it
    that way.
The only issue is that this systems uses Microsoft' DRM and
    relies
heavily in IE and Windows Media Player and this is where the
    problem
comes in. Very often the Media Player installation seems
    corrupted and
the only solution to get those videos to play is to reinstall
    the whole
    player... yes, major pain.
And on top of that the whole license delivery process is so
    complicated
that it can be troubleshooted purely on a case to case base.
So I was wondering if any of you had experiences with a
    similar system
and if there is a better solution to that. I was thinking
    more in terms
of using Flash, as somehow I think it is more reliable then
    the MP.
Currently Flash itself does not offer any DRM specificly, but
    then I
read that you could embed the Flash in a PDF.
    Any ideas/experiences...

    > I agree that it is a "nasty" thing in itself, which I
    also mentioned to my
    > client... But that's the way he wants to go...
Well, I'd just tell them that DRM is what it is. No matter
    which route you
go, there will be issues with some customers not being able
    to see it,
support pains/costs to help other customers, and overhead
    with developing
    and maintaining the DRM.
They really need to look at it from a business POV. If they
    removed the DRM,
would they save/make more or less money?
A lot of people THINK DRM is going to help, but never really
    analyze the
situation to see if it really does.
If you take the big examples (RIAA and MPAA) DRM certainly
    hasn't reduced
file sharing...the very thing they wanted to reduce by
    enacting DRM.

  • Playbook - best eBook DRM solution please

We have a Sony eReader, and I would very much like to share the books. What is the best eBook option for the Playbook? Can I access Adobe DRM epub books?

So is this too tricky at the moment?
    Kobo seems to have it.
Overdrive has it for library downloads.
Can one use an android app?
    Surely this is key functionality?

  • PDF DRM Solution

Hello I created an ebook in pdf format. I want to distribute the pdf files using cd. What can I do to prevent illegal coping of ebooks.
My idea is to encrypt the pdf file.
A plugin will required to open and view the file. and without plugin installed user can not view the file in adobe reader.
Create a plugin to decrypt the file. This plugin will only be installed once and not copyable.
any solution or some new idea ?

    Really leave them unencrypted.
    Or use Adobes solution.
What you are suggesting sounds like you would supply a viewer application and register to a "PDFexcrypted" extension, not a plugin of any kind.
Now solutions already exist by 3rd parties that do that. But then you are not supplying PDFs, but some other format, so what about people who want to view the document on an ebook reader? Or blackberry, or what have your They can't.
Plus anything that involves messing about with the PDF format is pain.
What ever you do I WILL be able to copy it. Really, write an application that reads in an encrypted file. Then I could decompile the application, grab the key and the decrypt method and I have a decrypted PDF.
Scrap PDF and use a custom format and encrypt that based on some magic stored on the CD – Just make a bit-for-bit direct copy of the CD, and use your viewer application.
Or use print screen (even if you disable this, I can just use a VMWare box and print screen that).
You CAN NOT protect content. You can make it harder to copy, but is your content really worth the cost (and writing your own will cost a lot)? Given once it is copied, a Joe User will just grab the encryption-free version from a friendly bit torrent site?

  • OSMF1.5 cannot parse DRM info from MBR correctly?

    Hi
I'm setting up a OSMF 1.5 based player which plays MBR video content protected by FlashAccess DRM solution. I notice that the drmTrait.drmMetadata is alway null until a valid license has been sent back from server. But our business logic requires sending custom data to server for authentication. In this case, DRMContentData (from drmTrait.drmMetadata) could not be null if I want to send auth token with drmTrait.authenticateWithToken().
In OSMF 1.6 Sprint5, there is an event named DRMState.AUTHENTICATING which will be dispatched when client is requiring the license, in the event, drmTrait.drmMetadata has valid value which can be used for sending custom auto token. But in OSMF 1.5, there is no such event. I tried return auth error from sever so I could get auth error event in client. I hopped that in auth error event, I could access drmTrait.drmMetadata but I failed. It's still null.
I put a similar thread in OSMF forum (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/886810?tstart=0) but no replies yet. I'd appreciate if any one could help.
    Thanks.

I've posted an answer in the OSMF thread.

  • Whre can i find the DRM metadata file specification?

In the "Protected Content Support" documentation, it is described that the DRM metadata can be included in the protected file or in a separate file.
I'd like to kown the format of the matadata information. Does anyone can tell me how to get it?
BTW, is there a sample for DRM in OSMF?
    Thanks.

DRMMetadata isn't published in a specification, because it is part of the Flash Access solution.   We don't have a public Flash Access server available for testing, but this page can explain more about DRM solutions in the flash player:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flashaccess/ .

  • DRM in J2ME

    Hello everybody!
i'd like to know whether there is DRM protection of JAR files? I mean illegal copy protection, etc. Does anybody know?

Nokia's DRM solutions are based on the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) standard; It should be independently of the mobile vendor. But this is a claim that I have not tested, so you should search for more information on this.

  • Mac DRM !!!!!!

this is the latest service that I can't use
"Will you offer 4oD for the Macintosh?
Category: 4oD | Sub Category: Getting Started
Unfortunately not at the launch of 4oD.
This is an industry-wide issue caused because the accepted Digital Rights Management (DRM) system used to protect online video content, which is required by our content owners, is not compatible with Apple Mac hardware and software. The closed DRM system used by Apple is not currently available for licence by third parties and there is no other Mac-compatible DRM solution which meets the protection requirements of content owners. Unfortunately, we are therefore unable to offer 4oD content to Mac users at this stage."
I've used Macs always, not sure how many knock backs I can take before I change. Anyone else?

    Hi Hayley!
I'm not an expert in DRM but I don't buy this excuse. I looked at this page on the channel4.com site <http://www.channel4.com/4od/how2use4od.html> and see that the requirements include using Windows XP, IE 5, 6 or 7 and most importantly Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player for Mac is not only not equal in version (latest Mac version is 9.0 and latest Windows version is 11.0) and quality to Windows Media Player for Windows but was discontinued by Microsoft in 2006. This was Microsoft's choice, not Apple's.
4oD appears by design to work only with Windows. They've chosen to use a Microsoft DRM solution and not only will this not work for Macs it won't work for Linux or any other operating system.
Apple makes its own DRM for its own products such as iTunes, but it doesn't control what others use for their DRM and doesn't preclude a third party from using a different DRM system for its own product.
Someone else may have more information for you about this but I don't see this as a problem caused by Apple.

  • How do I move my Itunes library to new computer?

I have a new computer and two Iphones and one Itouch. One Itunes account.
I have a new computer running windows vista. I have most of my library on my older iphone but when i connected it to my new computer only some songs where transfered. When I go to sync my Iphone it says that the iphone is synced with another computer. I still have the old computer but want to sell it and already have a buyer.
I have a new Iphone plus the existing one and I also have an Itouch. I want to have the ability to have all my music on the new computer and to have the ability to connect both Iphones and the Itouch to the same computer. Each one would be able to load music from the same library. I also have two laptops which have itunes loaded. I know you can have up to 5 computers on one account and I have not exceeded that.
If possible, if there is a solution can you really dumb down (simplify) the solution.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network the two over ethernet and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them:
Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Mac
OS X 10.5 - Connecting two Mac computers using Ethernet
Another way is to put your original computer into target disk mode and copy the data over Firewire: How to use FireWire target disk mode
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a Mac this would be in Username/Music/. Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Mac user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • How can I disable the Send to Email button?

    Hi all,
While creating a basic user ID in BOBJ 4.1 we found that even though we disable their Send Email rights in the BI Launchpad, they are still able to send emails from within the Analysis for OLAP tool.
The reason why this is a problem is it asks users for a "From" email address, where they can put any email address from within the corporate network, which can result in the following scenario, where anyone can impersonate anyone else in the company.
Does anyone know how we can restrict the Send Button, or at least remove the "From" field so users can only send emails from their own email address? In Webi, there is a specific right for this called "Desktop Interface - Send By Mail" but there is nothing like this as far as I can tell in any of the Analysis-related security items.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    John Cintolo

What would be the point? Any user can download the file from the web: right click then save as. If you want users not to be able to open a pdf file after they view it one time, then Adobe has a DRM solution that can do this. It does cost a bit of change though.

I think I speak for many people when I say that Adobe's outsourced "tech" "support" is niether tech nor support. Come on Adobe, step up to the plate and give your customers a little more respect by offering them the kind of support that would be expected with a professional software package.
I have wasted so much time, I really feel cheated and outraged.  I paid $800+ for an upgrade from CS2 to CS4 and the one feature I use the most : Merge to HDR will not align large images using WinXP-64, yet it workes fine in CS2.  Sound like an easy thing to fix? Well here is 5 months of BS from Adobe tech support, it would be comical if it wasnt so pathetic:
Have a similar story? add it here....
I was already walked through replacing that file over the phone, that is one of the many "solutions" that did not work.  Check the link you just sent me, it goes to PAGE UNAVAILABLE. I did an Adobe search for the file you were having me replace my current one with....PHSPCS4_Cont_LS1 and it IS FOR THE WRONG OPERATING SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!  Its for a Mac, I stated over and over the problem is a conflict with my WinXP-64 and you tell me to replace the automate file with a Mac file?

I still have the same problem. The "align" option in HDR will not work with large files when using WinXP-64.
The "align" processing time grows exponentially as the pixel sizes get larger in the images. I did extensive testing and plotted the
results.  My camera shoots 5616x3744, when using 5 or more of the these to create an HDR, (the minimum I would normally use)  the "
align" time is an unworkable 25+minutes.
The whole reason I am calling this an usresolved problem is that when I use the exact same photos in MergeHDR in CS2 it would proces
s in about 1 min. If I use the same files in CS4 without the "align" function, it processes in less than 10 seconds.
So clearly the problem is in the code of the "align" function in "Merge to HDR".  Somehow that code conflicts in WinXP-64.
I dont need to hear any other suggestions  of how to fix this on my end (there have been a dozens so far - they have all been wrong)
I'm just going to ask the same question again: are you going to have a programmer find the problem in the code and re-write a fix f
or WinXP-64 so it can handle larger images? I believe during one of our phone conversations I was told "we will look into this and g
et back to you" That was 3 or 4 months ago!
If you are not going to bother, please, have the dignity to just say so!

    That's nothing!
An engineer and I contacted Adobe technical support by phone to ensure the PC I was having custom built was configured to its optimum. They advised XP64 as the best operating environment. After that discussion we had to completely revise procurement, etc to get the bits and compatible XP64 compatible software, putting the build project back a few weeks as well, Imagine how I laughed when I found out on one of these forums that XP64 is the worst choice and totally unsupported by CS4!
I have written to Shantanu Narayen, Adobe CEO and didn't even get an acknowledgement I raised this last week on the Adobe stand at BVE and was told they'd get someone to contact me asap but guess what, niet...! To be fair there has been one Adobe executive that recognises the problem and the damage poor customer support is causing the company; he has been as helpful as he can. Unfortunately, it seems the overall Adobe culture at the top is "get the money and run". If your problem goes beyond what's already on their web pages, tough luck!

  • How to disable overprint feature in Adobe Reader 9 or 10 when printing?

    Hi,
I have a PDF document with overlapping objects (black text on top of pink text).  When I print from Adobe Reader 9 or 10 using any PCL color print driver (Windows 7 32-bit/64-bit), the pink text shows through, regardless of "Use Overprint Preview" setting in Adobe Reader Preferences.  Is there a way to turn this off for printing using any setting in Adobe Reader 9 or 10?  I don't want the pink text to show through, which is what is displayed on screen when I set "User Overprint Preview" to Never.  Print As Image didn't help either.
    Thanks!

You are, I'm afraid, chasing an impossible security that cannot exist. Many have sought this, but it just isn't there -- and there is so much more than the save button involved.
If you are a big enterprise with sensitive information consider DRM solutions ($$$$+).

I am an expert pc user switching to mac...
I realized when I made the switch that they would be software that worked with PC that would not work with MAC. What has really surprised me, is there seems to be many web sites that will not work with MAC and its browsers.
This started with a conversation with apple support, where they indicated there were incompatible web sites.

under the title of Video introduction:
Mac Firefox - nothing displays for the video player
Mac Safari - the video player displays, but the video will not play.
PC IE - everything works as expected.
The video format is wmv, which is an industry standard. I installed flip4mac, which is supposed to allow you to view wmv in quicktime, but it did work. Even after downloading the video (a link), I could not watch in on the mac. I had to go to a PC.
This type of silliness is exactly why I am running from a PC. Now I am finding it prevalent on the mac.
Question 1) specific to the wmv file format, how do you get it to run on mac?
Question 2) is this just the way it is? You cannot depend on web applications working at all with mac?
    thanks!

    Hi Bob,
    Ok, I'll bite
Apple has to understand that we don't care about who is at fault for web sites not working with Mac
The WebKit team are more than aware of that fact, and where possible they work with popular websites to get them to correct their websites or add specific 'kludges' into the WebKit code to specifically support these sites.
Apple has the ability to have an IE mode in safari to handle these situations, but hey choose not to
I've not heard that before. Can you quote a source?
If it takes IE compatibility mode to handle all web sites, then just do it.
That of course costs money. And then there's the prospect of Apple having to license Microsoft's DRM solution to provide 100% compatibility with Windows Media files. As we all know, Apple like good P.R. as much as the next company and handing something like that to Microsoft is never going to happen.
Microsoft clearly won't provide updated WMP technology for OS X as it gives them nothing, other than the extra impetus for people to switch away from Windows.
So we're stuck with essentially badgering the broken sites to fix things, or going somewhere else (and spending our $$$ there if needed).
The bar for a college student is much lower
True, but today's college student is tomorrow's business person and Apple products are very popular with college students these days. Apple are in this for the long term. Things will change, but we have to live in the real world and know this isn't going to happen soon.
The truth of the matter is that the sooner Microsoft get on board with being a responsible web-citizen then the better it will be for everyone (and by everyone I don't just mean Apple users, but anyone connected to the internet).
Almost [1 in 3 browsers on the web are not Internet Explorer|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usageshare_of_webbrowsers] - that's a huge number and businesses on the web need to be aware of this.
Please please please do not get me wrong - I would love it if Safari (or Firefox, or Opera, or Chrome, or ...) could handle every site that IE does but it's never, ever going to happen.
    Cheers,
    Ben

  • How to disable save option from adobe toolbar in Acrobat Reader

We need to disable Save option from Acrobat Reader plugin in Internet Explorer 8/9/10 version.
    Acrobat version is X.
Is it possible to disable Save ( Floppy Disk) icon?
We have disabled printing and copying.
    Please help

You are, I'm afraid, chasing an impossible security that cannot exist. Many have sought this, but it just isn't there -- and there is so much more than the save button involved.
If you are a big enterprise with sensitive information consider DRM solutions ($$$$+).

  • .PDF document save/print/copy restriction

We are developing a health care based Application using ASP.NET technology.
Our requirement is to allow or restrict  all the way for - 'Saving/Printing/copying'  a .pdf document through our Application based on given permission to logged in user. The solution shall be compatible with
    IE
    Mozila
    Safari
    Chrome Browsers
    Windows OS
    MAC OS
    and IPad..

You may limit printing with Acrobat security. Some software respects this.
    Similarly you may limit copy/paste.
To prevent saving and copying PDF files is absolutely impossible.
You almost certainly need to look at a DRM solution (so that unauthorized copies are useless). Whether you can find one compatible with iPad is likely to be the biggest challenge, since DRM plug-ins cannot be written for iPad.
