Simplifying Layers in Elements 8?

When I create a shape ( elliptical or rectangle ) in a new layer I can't simplify it.  There is no "Simplify" button in the options bar and if I drop down the Layers menu the Simplify Layer selection is greyed out and therefore not available.  Any advice out there?

  • Can't open a group of layers in Elements 13

I am trying to open a group of layers in Elements 13 but get the following error message:  "you are attempting to open a group which is not supported in photoshop elements"  Then it prompts to simplify all the layers into one layer.  This is useless!!!  How do I get around this?  It is a simple enough feature and would think Photoshop Elements could handle it.  Yes, I have the full software version, not the trial version.

The file is the following:  Corporate Business Card | GraphicRiver
Do I have to purchase a creative cloud membership now?  I already spent $150 on Elements.  And that was money thrown away.
Which membership would I have to get if that is the case?

  • Question about: "How to Use Layers in Elements 2.0"

I have gone over the tutorial "Harness the Power of Layers" and I can not figure out how to open the example the tutorial is showing me. It says: Open the "start.psd" file in the Tutorials folder located inside the Adobe Photoshop Elements Application folder and a wooden doll appears and instructs you how to add the accessories.(hat, bag, shadow, etc.)
Where do I find or open "start.psd" and the doll with the accessories? Also, is there online instructions that show or animate the steps involved in "layers" using Elements 2.0, which I'd pay for. Thank you, Robert

Chris, I know this is simple, but I'm having a mental block :-(
Are you saying go to "My Computer" where I find "C:Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop Element 2/Tutorials ? I can open Adobe Photoshop Elements. I just can't find "start.psd" in the tutorials link... Can you explain it another way ? Thanks
oh, sorry, yes I'm running Windows XP, 1.5 RAM

  • Where is the auto blend layers in elements 13

where is the auto blend layers in elements 13? why don't i have a tool bar on the elements page?

That function doesn't exist in Elements, only Photoshop; however, some people have written plug-ins that will allow it so if you're seeing a tutorial maybe that's the situation.
Elements 13 does have several layer blending functions, so will any of those work for what you want to do?
Here is a thread where someone talks about using an recorded PS action in PSE 12 and they include a .zip file in post #14.  I don't know if it'll still work in PSE13 or not:

  • Can I group layers in Elements 10?

Can someone tell me if its possible to group a number of layers in Elements 10?

It is possible to use clipping layers e.g. to apply an adjustment to just the layer below but it's only possible to use named layer groups in Photoshop CC.

  • Forming Layers with Elements 8

I have taken 5 photographs using the light painting techniques recently discussed in DPS Light Painting Tutorial.  However, using Elements 8, I can't combine them in Layers.  I can get them into Elements, save them, and open them in the Layers section of Elements.  However, I don't know where to go from there.  Any help out there?

I assume that you started out in PSEv.8 with File menu>new>blank file, set to appropriate size, and resolution the same as that of the 5 pictures.
Then, you have 5 layers above the background,  each layer with its unique photograph.
These layers were placed, I assume, either by dragging from the photobin, or copy/paste
Then he wants you to align the layers. CTRL+left click the 5 layers with the pictures to make them active, and get the Move tool out of the tool box. On the Move tool's option bar, there is an "align" icon at the top, allowing you to align the centers.
    HTH.

  • Need to know where the "simplify layers button is in CS5

I'm in a tutorial and she is clicking on the Layer "simplify layer" button and I don't have that. And she's also clicking on Edit "stroke outline selection". Can someone please help me thank you.

Photoshop Elements was once derived from Photoshop, quite a while ago, but the two have been diverging ever since - over 9 major version releases of Elements (and one of Photoshop LE before that).
I'd recommend entirely avoiding trying to follow an Elements tutorial with your copy of Photoshop full version.  Trying to learn either is complex enough without trying to translate for the differences.  There are many good Photoshop full version tutorials available.

  • Unable to Group Layers in Elements 6

I am trying to make a polaroid collage/montage as illustrated here: http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/polaroids/ . I get to step 13 where it says to group the top 3 layers (Layer 1, Layer 3, and Layer 5)...nothing happens. I've tried ctrl + G and going to layer, then group with previous...but group with previous is greyed out...please help! I'm a novice to Elements, but this seems pretty straight forward. I've searched everywhere on the net and cannot find a solution. I am hopeful that I will find a solution here! Thanks.

Feature for Grouping Layers is not available with PSE, but you can still proceed with your steps by doing the following:
Select all of your top 3 layers and then drag them to 'create new layer' icon. This will create a copy of the selected layers. Now continue with the Step 15 mentioned in your tutorial.
The only difference with PSE will be that your 3 layers will not be bundled as a group. Whenever you need to duplicate a group, just select all the layers (mentioned in your tutorial under the group) and duplicate them.
Hope this helps you proceed with your work.

  • Layers in Elements

I use lightroom to do most of my editing and then pass it to Elements for the finishing touches.  I am able to use levels and curves but not add a layer.  The add a layer option is not available. If i bring the files in from hard drive instead of passing from Lightroom all is OK?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

To use layers you need to select 8 bit image (not 16 bit).
Try selecting Edit a Copy with Lightroom Settings - TIFF (8 bit depth rate) or choose PSD.

  • Layering with Elements

I use Photoshop 7 to edit graphics and am looking to upgrade to newer software. I use layering very often. Does Photoshop Elements have this functionality or do I need something different?

    Yes, PSE has layers.

  • Can I un-simplify layers to enable me to edit them again??

I am making flyers, had to simplify the layers to enable me to emial them, but would now like to make a couple more alterations - just wondering if I can un-simplify the existing layers??

There is nothing called unsimplify, when you have saved a PSD and reopening it again. In same editing session, you can reach old state by Undo operations.

  • Font layers between Elements and Photoshop

We use Elements 4 and Photoshop CS2. When we open files made in the other program and try to edit text we get a dialog saying that the text has to be rasterized. Will this still happen if we upgrade to Elements 6?

you could download the Elements trial and see for yourself, not very many people who use photoshop have Elements. You might get better answers in the Elements Forum where there are people who actually use Elements.

  • Hidden layers div elements are printing

Hidden layers for drop down menus created by fireworks have
<div> code at the bottom of the page for the menu's content.
Its printing when a user prints the website from a browser. I don't
know how to make that code (not visible but prints) stop
    printing!

Post a link to the page, please.

  • Where can I find the "Group button" for layers? Element 8

So Im trying to find the button to group a layer but I can't.
Any idea where I can find it?

That's being a bit pedantic, I think. In all previous versions of PSE the function was called grouping. Just because adobe decided to change its name doesn't mean the function isn't there anymore. I have to say I find this tendency of Adobe to cal something one thing and then call it something else and assign the original name to a different function HUGELY annoying, as do all the PS and PSE instructors I've ever met.

  • Ungrouping layers in Photoshop Elements 8

So I'm going through my external HD looking for some old work in progress, and come across a couple of files that had been started on my old room mate's copy of Photoshop CS2. The layers are grouped into folders.
On my current computer, I have Elements 8, which can't open those folders. But, I'm not on speaking terms with my old room mate anymore, so opening it on her copy of CS2 to fix it up isn't an option.
Is there a way to ungroup layers in Elements 8? I found a "how to" on doing it for Elements 6, but alas, the steps didn't work on 8.
Does anyone know how to do this on 8?

You can use Elements+ from simplephotoshop.com (not free), or there's a script posted someplace in the forums at elementsvillage.com that will work with PSE 8 (but not with PSE 10), if you do a search there (look for layer sets).
