Simulate Paper in Print Options

Is there a difference in functionality between the way that 'simulate paper' (checked) behaves in the 'print' dialog box versus the way it behaves in the'proof setup' dialog box.
I believe that in 'proof setup' all this option does is provide a visual simulation - no file information is changed. On the other hand, I think it will affect the output if it is checked in the 'print' dialog box. I'm thinking that it will because Photoshop is trying to create a proof file that will be sent to the printer. Also since the function of the 'match colors' button is for visual proofing in the 'prin't dialog box, it would seem redundant to have the 'simulate paper' function just for visual checks. Am I right?

Hi!
The help file says that it simulates the paper white in the preview. You would have to check if it makes a difference in Print.

  • What is the corresponding DOM property to control the "Simulate Paper Color" option on Print dialog

I want to simulate the following manual steps in script:
    Manual steps:
    1. File->Print->Color Management
    2. Click "Proof" radio button
    3. Uncheck "Simulate Paper Color"
    Script:
    2. app.documents[0].printPreferences.sourceSpace = SourceSpaces.PROOF_SPACE;
    3. ??? here I can't find the corresponding property or method to uncheck "Simulate Paper Color"

I think I have figure out the corresponding property, it is PrinterPreset.intent
Assigning PrinterPreset.intent to RenderingIntent.absoluteColorimetric equals to checking "Simulate Paper Color", assigning it to RenderingIntent.relativeColorimetric equals to unchecking the box.

  • Can anyone help with printer options on iPad mini, can I change layout paper size?

I am trying to change the printer options on my iPad mini so that I can print on legal size paper,  I also would like to change to portrait layout.  Is this an option when printing from an iPad Mini?

I think the same problem exists with all the iOS devices.  I suggest you look for a free App from the manufacturer of your printer.  It will have limitations, but may include the ability to change paper size and image size and orientation.
There are other printing Apps such as Print n Share that can do that, but they are not free.
The problem you may face, is that such printing Apps can only be accessed from within other Apps that have the "Open In" option.  If you can use their built-in programs, they may meet your needs.

  • I have a Mac with OS 10 5.8 and a new HP Pro 8500 Premier Printer. When printing, how do I change the print option from photo paper to plain or inkjet? This is a serious problem and HP tells me it is a problem with Firefox, that they are getting several

I used to be able to choose print options with Firefox and now I can't. It forces me to use photo paper when I want only to use plain paper. I do not have this problem with Safari or IE, just firefox. I have an office jet 4500 HP printer

I should add that it's an HP photosmart 4280.I found it online and it shows the Mac 0SX operating system.

  • HP PSC 1610 lost Paper/Quality tab in Print Options

Help! The Paper/Quality tab in Print Options menu has disappeared. Everything prints with max ink. The ability to select draft, fast normal or black ink only has disappeared. I suspect this happened after the last OSX update. I now have 10.4.7
The problem persists with all software applications

Thanks for the tip. I did receive a long answer from HP to uninstall and reinstall the updated printer drivers from HP's site. They think something got corrupted. I suspect they are right. After doing the whole procedure it now works fine. Thanks for your help.

  • HT204135 I have two Epson printers and one Canon printer. Why am I unable to access the same print options on my MacBook Pro as I could on mp PC i.e. select paper type and print quality?

I have just purchased a MacBook Pro as my PC has finaly died.
I have three Inkjet printers i.e. Epson Photo PX700W Epson Photo R340 and a Canon Pixma ip4600 which I connected to my Mac and the print drivers were automatically downloaded. Now when I print using any of the printers the functionality PC i.e. Choice of paper and print quality settings. Is this all I get when using the Mac OS lion or should the functionality be on a par with Windows?

Depending on the application you are printing from, you may need to press the Show Details button in the print dialog to see all of the additional driver menus.
The image below is for the extended print dialog of TextEdit and for a Canon MP990 printer. The Show Details button is on the bottom of the print dialog and will change to Hide Details when selected. And with the menu changed to Quality & Media, you have paper options and print quality settings.

  • Can Aperture option to print  photos on a stronger paper, Can Aperture option to print  photos on a stronger paper

Can Aperture option to print  photos on a stronger paper, Can Aperture option to print  photos on a stronger paper

This is determined by your printer, and the print profile you use.  It is not determined by Aperture.  Consult your printer documentation for information of what thicknesses of paper are suitable, and how to use them.

  • Soft proofing using "Simulate paper color"

Does anyone really understand exactly how this function is supposed to work? With the extreme move that occurs when Simulate" is clicked on, It seems virtually impossible to make corrections to the file that resemble the original look of the file. The idea is that the "Simulate" option shows you the image as the printer sees the image before he makes his corrections on press (by adding ink to the press run) and if we can compensate with a correction, that it will save the printer loads of time and save me tons of paper. by profiling the epson to a proofing paper and printing with that profile I get a exact rendition of my image. Why do you need "simulate paper color"?

Most computer monitors are much brighter than any printed sheet. The Simulate Paper is doing an Absolute Colorimetric rendering through the paper profile to the screen, attempting to show you the real color of the paper, not the bright white of you monitor. If you monitor is extremely well calibrated and you have good custom profiles of your output paper - and controlled viewing conditions, all of this can work pretty darned well, but only if all those little ducks are actually in the same row. The biggest problem is that most paper profiles are not accurate enough to simulate the paper white, and the least bit of error is clearly seen with the naked eye.
Typically when you have a paper that is not super white, the color and tone of the paper will have a gradual effect on colors from paper white into the midtones, dirtying up the lightest colors. Newsprint would be a common offender. If you're printing on #1 sheets the effect is very small if you notice it at all. Experience will tell you when you need to compensate. Trusting the Absolute Colorimetric rendering on Epson proofs will probably cause you more problems that you started with unless you've manually edited the Absolute Colorimetric rendering white point of the output profile, a trial and error process where the eyes are much more accurate than any spectrophotometer.
Personally I almost never use it for offset unless it's newsprint or some other really crappy paper. I find it somewhat useful for inkjet canvas and fine art papers, but that's about it.

  • How do I select a thick paper to print from Indesign?

How do I select a thick paper to print from Indesign? I have to go to the printer to select the thicker paper. I would like to select the paper from my computer in Indesign.  Other programs allow this.

At the bottom of the print dialog box is a button labeled Printer. That will lead you to the printer-specific options like paper weight.

  • Duplex printing option no longer avaialble in Preview and TextEdit.

I am no longer offered the option to select two-sided printing for .pdfs in Preview or for text documents in TextEdit when using my HP Officejet K550. The printing options no longer allow me to select Paper Type or Print Quality for these documents either. If I open a the same .pdf in Adobe Reader or Acrobat Pro, the duplex, paper, and quality options are available. I have the latest driver and firmware updates from HP, and my Apple software is up to date. HP Support suggests it is an issue with the applications from which I'm printing (e.g. Preview).
Does anybody know why this has happened or how to restore these options when printing from Preview or TextEdit?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Since you are using an Intel Mac, the two applications you mention have been written in Universal Binary. For your HP printer driver, if it relies on print dialog extensions (pde's) to make these options available, and these same files have been written for the older Power PC processor, then this can make the options unavailable when printing from Universal applications. And that could explain why they are available when printing from Acrobat, as this is probably still the PPC version.
The solution would be to find a Universal version of the HP driver (I know you mentioned you have the latest but if its not Universal then it will have this issue).
To prove it is a Universal vs PPC issue, you can change Preview so that it opens using the Rosetta emulator. Control-click on the Preview icon and select Get Info. Select the check box "Open using Rosetta" and then close the window. Then open Preview and try to print two-sided.

  • Why doesn't the Firefox print window not provide a double-sided printing option?

My HP printer is capable of printing double-sided, which saves paper, but the Firefox Print Window does not offer a double-sided printing option. (I recently switched from IE, which did.) Do I have to do something to add it?

Can you post a screen shot of what you're seeing?
The relevant print options for your printer appear under Properties AFTER you click the Print button and select the printer to be used.

  • How to have "black and white only" be the default print option

Just installed a new printer and would like to set it up so that the default print option is black and white only. How do I do this?

Can't find this anywhere. I'm brand new to Macs so I
    might need more detailed instructions.
I have an HP Photosmart C6100 by the way.
Not sure which post you are responding to since you replied to yourself
Every printer is a little different so you may have to do some searching through the settings. I don't have an HP Photosmart C6100 here so I can't say for sure where the setting is for that printer.
The closest thing I have to that model printer here is an HP OfficeJet 6310
In that model you choose Paper Type/Quality
In drop down menu under Color you select Gray Scale
Then you can still save the preset as I described in my previous post.
If the C6100 is different than that you may just have to search through option pages and explore the drop down selections.
Which I could be more specific, but they are all a little different.

  • Iphoto 08 Printing Options limited???

Is it me? or is the new Iphoto in I LIFE 08 more limited in it's printing options.
In 06 and earlier it had options for printing greeting cards, n-up and other options for printing.
Now it seems if you want to take an image ie. and print your own greeting card.. you can only
do a greeting card if you purchase it thru apple ?? is it me or is there something Im missing?
Also wondering how to print to standard Epson or Kodak Photo paper templates from i photo?

    ericsf:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iPhoto 6's greeting cards were difficult to print as they, as the current batch, were based on 7 x 10 inch stock. to print both sides in register one would have to trim the stock to 7 x 10 beforehand and have a printer that would handle 7 x 10 borderless. I don't know of any printers that do support 7 x 10 borderless. It's the same with iPhoto 7.
If you have a 3rd party editor that supports layers, Photoshop Elements, Photoshop or Pixelmator, you can follow Tutorial #8 to print the cards borderless.
The n-up is possible but more difficult to find and execute. See Anastassios T's post in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1142792&tstart=0.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
