Simulated helvetica small caps not displayed acceptably in PDF

It's a never ending battle, this trying to get some sense out of computers. In a post earlier this year (http://forums.adobe.com/message/1287805#12878) I asked how to overcome the lack of proper small caps in Helvetica. Sandee came back with a suggestion, which I followed up, and it seemed to give reasonable results. And within InDesign, and when printed, it works.
However, when I export to PDF the small caps are not shown correctly on the screen. (The PDF file can be downloaded from http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?nmjlhmiwt3i). They look a mess unless you zoom in about 500%. They print okay, but I'm not having a messy looking PDF sent to the printer. It's nothing but offputting.
If that was the only difficulty I could probably accept it, but I intend making my two books freely available for download in PDF form and I certainly don't want rubbish-looking fonts on display.
It looks like my mock small caps may have to be replaced with caps.
QUES 1
Is it possible to make my mock small caps display acceptably on the screen within a PDF? I have tried exporting to PDF at various resolutions, and with optimize for web turned on and off, but that makes no difference.
QUES 2
Another option is to get hold of a Helvetica font (or similar) that does have small caps. Where could I get hold of one of those?
The original InDesign file from which the PDF was obtained, can be downloaded from http://www.mediafire.com/?zddtj5m5d3q in case anyone wants to play around.

Thanks for the responses. I'm surprised the PDF looked okay, so I've emailed it to half a dozen people to see how it looks on their system. Maybe it's my screen or my Adobe Reader that's at fault.
I have attached two screen captures of what it look like on my screen. One at 100%, the other at 200%.
I'd like to continue using Helvetica because it's the one I've used in about 200 sidebars. If I change fonts, I imagine I could be days cleaning up the text oversets or undersets. I did think of changing fonts, and looked at all the sans serifs on my system, including the Open Type ones, but none had small caps. And buying an expert set: I could spend the next two days trying to sort out where to buy one of those and whether it actually contain small caps. Plus, I can't justify a price in excess of $100 for the sake of 400 words.

  • Small caps not displaying correctly in the ePub file

    Hello All,
I am using cs5.5 to generate ePub file, and I found that small caps contents not displaying correctly in the generated ePub file even the CSS looks correct. Please check and confirm, if anyone faced this issue? Also other formatting components are looks fine in the ePub file.
    Thanks,
    Praveen

@Jongware/Bob, thanks for your responses, I checked the ePub output using 'Adobe Digital Editions', and getting the same issue in 'Calibre', but in 'Sigil', it looks fine.
In CSS it has been declared like below:
    span.SmallCaps {
    font-variant : small-caps;
Here 'SmallCaps' is the character style applied for the 'small caps' contents.
    Thanks,

  • Small Caps Not Working Suddenly

    Hello,
I am having problems with a typeface in a pamphlet I am working on.  Earlier saved versions of this file are fine, but I'm curious why all of a sudden, my "small caps" aren't working in both Character Styles and toggling the option outside of the Character Styles.  It's only happening with the typeface I want to use: Futura Std.  If I supplement with Gill Sans, or something, it seems to work fine then.  What might cause this, and why would it work in earlier saved versions, but not my new packaged version?  It works with my plain "Futura," but not my OpenTypeface "Futura Std."  Thoughts?

HI Peter, thanks for responding. I'm working in CC5 and yes, I read Bob's post. I wasn't able to get it work. Additionally, I'm having problems when converting to PDF. In one document the text is fine but when I create a PDF the text gets all messed up, the letters turn into different letters of all different sizes. It's fine when I convert to JPEG.

  • Small caps not working in web fonts

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a problem implementing OpenType features in web fonts. No  matter what typeface or browser I use—and I've tried several of each—I  can't get the CSS font-face property to listen to  font-variant:small-caps. In every case, the browser synthesizes its own  small caps by scaling the full caps, which of course looks terrible.
The typefaces I've tried with this are all open-source advanced  fonts: Cabin, Cardo, Lato, and Sorts Mill Goudy, all of which support  small caps at least in their roman, regular-weight face. I've used  Firefox 5, Opera 11.5, and the latest build of Iron (Chrome without Big  Brother), all to no avail.
It's worth mentioning that other properties of advanced web  typography, such as automatic ligatures (as well as the font-face  property itself), are all working.
You can see my test page at http://www.utcolmus.org/test.html , and the CSS file at http://www.utcolmus.org/main.css. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Bram

    Yeah, that doesn't work.
CSS 3 supports directly accessing real small caps. Currently only Firefox supports this, and only via moz-prefixed properties (which makes sense as CSS 3 isn't final yet).

  • Reader X does not display drawing in PDF generated with LaTeX

I have a quite large PDF generated by pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.11 which contains also XY-pic drawings rendered with Xy-pic version 3.8.2, PDF driver v.1.4.
One drawing does not display correctly in Adobe Reader X. Neither on Windows, neither on Mac. It does display correctly with following programs:
Preview on Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6
    Adobe Reader 9.x
    Skim (skim-app.sf.net).
When I open this document with Adobe Reader X I get following error message when I hit page 58:
"An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem".
Where does one report rendering problems?

  • Markup not displaying Doc/docx/PDF properly

    Hey everyone,
I'm using Oracle text in conjunction with Apex, all on top of the 11G database. My issue is that using the Oracle text Markup, many files types do not display properly. The level of wrongness varies, from some readable text to complete gibberish. This happens to all version of PDFs, Docs, and Docx files. A sample of what appears is below:

However, using a simple .txt file, the result is nearly perfect and everything is complete readable.

Well, I figured this one out on my own. I had been using a multi-column datastore, and it turns out that you have to turn on auto-filtering for each column you add. Once I had done this and rebuilt my index, my markup was much more accurate and readable. Hopefully this can help out anyone else going through this issue.

  • Why a field with javascript formula is not displaying result on .pdf form

I have created a .pdf form from an exel file.
I have assigned java script formula such as
    if (QtyRow1 > 0) { QtyRow1, €UPRow1;}else{€TotalPriceRow1="";}
Problem is, result is not displayed on form.
    What should I do?
J'ai créer un formulaire en format .pdf depuis un fichier exel.
J'ai assigné une formule dans le script de calcul personnalisé:
    if (QtyRow1 > 0) { QtyRow1, €UPRow1;}else{€TotalPriceRow1="";}
Mon problème est que le résultat ne s'affiche pas sur la forme.
Que dois-je faire pour remédier à ce problème?
    Merci

The idea behind the formula might be correct, but you can't just invent
your own syntax and expect it to work...

  • Some Cyrillic fonts not displaying in Preview PDF

    Hi,
Times New Roman (and potentially other fonts) are not displaying in Cyrillic for me. Arial and other fonts work fine.
When I copy the blank-appearing section into Word, I can see the text.
Has anyone else had this issue?

I have some doubts that your problem is really the same as the big 10.6.7 one being reported, e.g.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2792142?tstart=0
    but you never know.
You might want to check with your agency to see if they are doing anything different on their end.

I have - several times. All I can tell you is that the URL you provided
does not have a file at the end of it, but I can see all the other files
    in that directory.
So either you gave the wrong URL, or there's some sort of permissioning
problem that is not allowing me to see it.
Before we worry about the file, however - is this a custom report
plug-in? If not, then the issue is moot, this is the wrong forum to
    discuss.

  • Small pictures not displaying

This is going to be hard to explain being that I have no knowledge about java and cannot attach a screen shot. I have a website that I am going to and there are small pictures that are not showing when I access the page. I spoke to someone that fixed this issue within my company and he said he configured java to encode internet case. Java was not installed on this machine prior to me working on it. I installed JRE 1.5 and this problem still persists. If it will help, the page I am unable to display is www.fldfs.com/data/aar_alis1 and the missing images are above "licensee search" and below the links at the top.
    Scott

The 'small images' you are having trouble with are actually an Applet, a small java program inserted into the web page.
This is a forum for people who write Java Servlets, mini server applications designed for generating html. The problem you are having has nothing to do with the topic of this forum.
Knowing nothing about your computer, its OS, your browser, there is nothing I can do to help you. Except pass you over to http://www.java.com/en/ where installation should be painless for windows users with IE. Other OS/browser combos may take some work. But the instructions should help you through it.

  • Reader 11.0.07 does not display content of PDFs created with LiveCycle Designer ES 8.1

We use some PDFs created with LiveCycle Designer ES 8.1 which do not show any content when opened with Reader 11.0.07, only a blank display area or erratic copies of the screen behind it. Documents look fine in print preview though and also print correctly. Tried to change various security or display settings, no effect. Tried other machines, different hardware, different OS versions (Win7, Win8), same effect on every single device with 11.0.07 installed.
    Any ideas, anyone?!?

    Hi,
Not sure why you are resolving the node (??), also I would not be inclined to include a period in the object name (.), maybe this is why you are resolving the node.
Also I don't see in the script where you are calling the instanceManager, in order to use the addInstance method.
Having said that the problem may be in the File > Form Properties > Defaults tab:
Check that Preserve script changes is set to Automatic.
Lastly is the form Reader Enabled? It would need to be for users with Reader to save the changes, including new instances of a repeating element.

  • Fonts not displaying properly in PDFs in Preview

When I open a PDF in Preview, fonts are either substituted, or the text doesn't display at all.
PDFs display properly in Adobe Acrobat, however.
I've tried deleting Preview's preferences, to no avail. Any clues?

This is a constant problem for us too (on our new Leopard only machines), any program that uses the OS to display PDFs will keep dropping type.
This means the finder, preview, keynote and mail applications. Our placed PDFs in keynote slides don't show type. In finder windows, the type in pdfs (the icon) is sporadic at best, in mail and entourage the type on pdfs in email is also sporadic. Preview itself is completely hot or miss. But open the same pdf in acrobat and viola, perfect.
Clearing the font caches and restarting is only a temporary fix.
This is an inexcusable bug that makes doing professional design work (the sole reason we have macs) extremely difficult. I wish we had not upgraded any of our computers.

  • Default signature (the default cursive name) does not display on executed PDF

When I and my client e-sign a document with our default signatures (the default cursive name), none of our signatures displays on the executed (e-signed by both of us) PDF. However if I and/or client upload an image for our signatures and use it for our profile to e-sign the document, it does show up on the executed PDF.
The problem is I can’t ask everyone to upload an image of their signatures. The default signature (cursive name should show up on executed PDF. Any idea why it doesn’t or how to fix it?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Similar problem. The cursive signature and date stamp appear in Acrobat Pro, but not in Preview. I tried to sign in Preview Document Mode, as suggested elsewhere, and that did not work. This is a preloaded signature I'm working with. It worked on my first attempt when I created the signature. Perhaps that's the only thing that works.
