Simulating DNG Profile changes in PSD file

Hello  everyone,
I have a RAW file and applied Adobe's default DNG Profile (via the Camera Calibration panel in Lightroom 2.6) and converted it to a PSD file so I can retouch the photo via Photoshop CS3.
After hours of retouching, I now want to apply a custom DNG Profile that I made from a Color Checker. However, I'm not able to apply the profile to "already-rendered images" (http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/DNG_Profiles:FAQ#WhyOnlyEmbedded)
So my question is: Is there any way to simulate the effects of a profile change via Photoshop adjustments (i.e. HUE/SAT adjustments)?
Please feel free to let me know if more clarification is  needed.
Thanks,
David

I thought I'd posted a reply but I failed to make it stick, somehow. Anyway, thanks Jim for that. Makes perfect sense.
Except I've just had a further thought. Why would Adobe change a file name to distinguish between color spaces if DNGs/RAWs are color-space agnostic? Where it would make sense is with jpegs, but name-changing doesn't happen there, of course, as there's no conversion taking place.

    Hi Wolf,
Thanks, I really appericate your response. But I'm still not able to change the DNG Profile. Here are my steps in following your direction, please let me know where I went wrong:
    1. I exported the retouched PSD file as a DNG file via Lightroom 2.6
    2. I then opened the DNG file in Camera Raw via Adobe Bridge
    3. At this point, I checked the "Open in Photoshop as Smart Objects" option and opened the file in Photoshop CS3
    4. I then double clicked on the smart opject within Photoshop, and like you said, the file opened in Camera Raw again
    5. However, when I go to the camera calibration panel, I am still not able to apply another profile; I only see an "Embedded" profile in the Profile popup menu and no other options.
Any advice would be much appericated.

  • Changing a .psd file to a .jpg

Using PSE9, I put a .jpg photo into the camera raw editing window.  After editing it, I clicked on Open Image and finished the tweaks there.  When I tried to save it, it didn't allow me to save it as a .jpg, only .psd, .png, tiff, etc. I've tried to Save As but the .jpg option doesn't come up.  Can you tell me how to get a .psd file to be saved as a .jpg.  Thanks.

Ensure that there is no space or dot in the filename itself?
If you still face the same issue, please share a screenshot of the Save dialog.
    Thanks

  • CS6 to CC; PSD file not updating

Ran into a problem after upgrading from CS6 to CC.
I'm making an animatic for a stop-motion film.
A lot of the media I'm editing in Premiere is in the form of .psd files created in Ps and edited within a video timeline; they are recognized by Pr as video clips.
Before upgrading to CC if I changed the .psd file in Ps and saved it it would automatically update in Pr. No render from Ps necessary.
Now it doesn't, and says media pending, "link Media" is grayed out, and I can't replace the footage.
I like working between the two programs with .psd files but for now I will render out video clips to work with.
If anyone knows how to get back to my original workflow please let me know.
    Thanks,
    ~Scott

I found a quick solution in case someone stumbles upon this post with similar problems. I just deleted the old psd and re-imported the new one. Would have been nice to just re-link the psds so if anyone knows how to do that please post. Thanks.

  • Operation Not Allowed: psd files

Short version: I changed psd file modes to 16 bit.
I have had problems with my Photoshop files since I upgraded to FCP5 in Oct or Nov. I did everything suggested in these discussions and nothing worked.
I took a break from psd files and came back here to look again for another solution because I just knew it had to be something simple, some kind of setting. I followed the suggestions AND ONE FINALLY WORKED (so far).
Someone said they changed the psd file mode from 8 bit to 16 bit. Wah-lah! It's been working for me so far. Hope this helps someone esle.

One big problem..if you change it to 16bit FCP wont let you play with the psd layers

  • Output .PSD files

I modified a JPG file in Photoshop Elements and now it is a PSD file. I want to upload it to Shutterfly, but cannot because Shutterfly only uploads JPG files. Is there a way to change a PSD file to a JPG file? Simply renaming it does not change the basic file type

File>Save As and choose JPEG from the pulldown menu. You can save in any format you like--you didn't have to create PSD the first time. Just pick your format from the menu.

  • Alter the linkage between encore and psd-file

    hello
I wanted to change the psd file wich is connected with encore
in my project there is a file called "first.psd"
now - it is an old file so I want to substitute this file with "second.psd"
so if I open my encore-project there is a new connection to "second.psd" and not to "first.psd"
    How could I alter this?
    thanks

Have you tried the Replace Menu command?

  • DNG Profile Editor: Can't create profile from JPG file

Guys, could you tell me why DNG Profile Editor fails to create color table using 4 colored circles ? It says "Unable to check white balance using gray patches. Please use the four color circles to identify the four corner patches of the chart and try again" even though I places four circles properly (it works with DNG files shot with my Nikon D700).
I created this DNG file from JPG file by opening it in Camera Raw plugin and saving as DNG file. Original JPG was shot on camera of Samsun Galaxy S phone. I know I'm crazy but I want to have color profile for it All patches are properly exposed after slight correction of Exposure slider in Camera Raw.
    I'm using latest beta3 build
Here is link to DNG and JPG file I'm trying to use
    http://www.box.net/shared/4v2rzlzjfp
    Thanks!

If you convert your JPG to a DNG can you change the profile to the one you computed from the other JPG you converted to a DNG?
Profiles are not for JPGs.  Profiles are for RAW files that ACR supports.  You can't (easily/ever) get a RAW file from your Galaxy S and Adobe doesn’t' support that RAW format even if you could.
To see if your profiling is working, you can used the ColorCheck module from a trial version of Imatest that you download from www.imatest.com and look at the color-error.
You can also try the Read_Color_CC24.jsx script from Rags-Gardner:

  • Can I re-convert dng files to psd files (or another format that can be used in Adobe Touch)?

I am using LR 4.1, CS6, on a PC running Windows 7.  Creative Cloud will accept dng's, but Adobe Touch will not.  I'd hate to have to re-save lots of photos one at a time.  (I'm not generally all that happy with dng format--it makes some files unreadable elsewhere, and any work done on a dng results in its being saved as a psd anyway.)
    Thanks for any ideas.
    Gail

    1. Proprietary formats such as NEF and CR2 are secret.
    2. The universal DNG is an open format.
By all means stick to the raw files produced by your camera if you intend to do your editing in the software provided by your camera manufacturer. If you do all your editing in Adobe software DNG, imho is a better workflow choice.
For archiving purposes I would sooner trust Adobe for future support on DNG than individual camera makers who are known to change their raw formats. Also the benefit of embedded data and no sidecar files, plus fast load data (introduced for DNG’s in Lightroom 4) are clear advantages
If you want to use a tablet with Photoshop Touch tools such as layers, selection tools, adjustments, and filters then a PSD exported from DNG in light room will almost certainly produce an optimum sized file. Tiff will also support layers but the file size will usually be much bigger.

  • All my .psd files created in PSE were changed  to CS files--how can I get them back to PSE?

    Running PC, Win7, HP Pavilion dv7.  PSE6, CS4.
I use both PSE6 and CS4 depending on the project.  I am very happy with both of these elderly versions and have no desire to change.
Recently, all the projects (works in progress, .psd files) that I had created and saved using PSE suddenly converted themselves into CS4.  Literally.  I booted my computer and there were no more PSE projects.  (To see what was going on, I created a .psd file with PSE and saved it; it also saved itself as CS4.)  I can find no way to open them in PSE.  This isn't a crisis, obviously, since I can still open them in CS4.  But I prefer to work on these projects in PSE (that's why I used PSE to create them in the first place).  And it's impractical to go through a laborious process of opening in CS4 and then transferring everything to PSE, only to have it end up as CS4 again.
The only change I have made: I downloaded and installed Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) updates, upgrading the PSE from v4.2 to v5.6, and upgrading CS to v5.7.  Both installed and function without difficulty.
I will be very grateful for any advice/info that will allow me to work in the Photoshop program of my choice (PSE or CE), save and reopen in the same program.
    Update:
The problem is half solved.  Somehow CS4 was made the default for .psd files.
Unfortunately, it seems that for whatever reason, since this incident all .psd files must have the same default "Open with..." program.  If I select a PSE project and make PSE the default program to open that type of file all .psd projects--even those created and saved in CS4, show the PSE logo and open with PSE when clicked.
So basically I have to decide which one I use more, then use the "Open with..." option for the other.  Which introduces a small but noticeable hiccup into the work flow.
I'm still at a loss to understand how this happened.  Used to be that CS4 projects displayed a CS4 logo, and PSE projects displayed a PSE logo, and each would open in the correct program when clicked.
    Simple is better.

"Not typical behavior". I think not. I am yet another person this happened to. Even if I can get them back, you've just wasted an hour or two of my time. I won't be using firefox again after I've recovered my bookmarks. If I recover them. Thanks for nothing.

  • Changes made in LR 1.3 to psd files are not reflected in ACR 4.3, Bridge 2.1.1.9, or Photoshop CS3

I have repeatedly imported several psd images into LR 1.3, made changes in the develop mode, and saved metadata to file manually in addition to having the auto write metadata option on in LR and ACR. Any changes I have made in LR are not reflecting in Bridge previews or in ACR or Photoshop. I don't believe I should have to utilize the write to xmp options (even though I have been) since the files in question are psd and the metadata gets written directly into the file. If I delete the photo from LR, and even delete the LR catalog (new user trying to make it work with 1 photo at least before importing all images) and re-import the psd to LR it appears with the changes and can backlog in the history panel to it's original state upon import into LR. I would have to be in LR though to know that anything was altered as the other Adobe programs will not display the changes.
If anyone has any help - I would greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Ann

    ACR 4.3
    LR 1.3
    Bridge 2.1.1.9
    PS CS3 (updated last week)

I don't think the problem lies in the name. LR is after all meant to function as a data base of images and be a companion program to PS - with PS doing the heavy editing lifting. I do understand that PS is a pixel editing file and LR is not. I like the idea of the non-destructive editing that LR has to offer and for a lot of image "developing" I prefer LR's interface to ACR.
In my humble opinion, I just think that the Photoshop family of products should all be able to read the same metadata. If I am starting in LR with a psd file (with layers) and I continue to process the image further in LR and save the metadata - therefore saving the changes - I want to be able to open that same file (not another copy) in ACR, PS, or Bridge and have those changes reflected. The only way to do that currently is to export the file and when you do that you lose the PS layers and the LR history panel or another way around it is you can have edit copies of the same file. If at a later date you wanted to go back and change something, you can't just pull out a layer in PS or undo a history state in LR and with the multiple copies of essentially the same image you end us with any editing history scattered amongst multiple files. I already keep 2-4 (original, psd, jpeg print, jpeg web) files for one image which I think is more than adequate. Which is why I find the current set up so frustrating. For now I have just settled for exporting jpegs so I can see the changes.

  • Imported Photoshop Layers change in Motion after re-saving PSD file

Curious if anyone has seen this issue:
I have a multi-layered Photoshop CS drawing that I import (All Layers) into Motion to animate. No problem.
If I make a change to the original Photoshop PSD file, the Motion layers are updated incorrectly. The layers are swapped and their locations move. The only fix I have is to completely re-import the file and start from scratch.
I've also seen the Motion layers change slightly if I just save the PSD file again without changes. They are minor, but still apparent.
    Anyone, anyone?

Lesson learned. Do you know, is the a problem only if PS and Motion are open at the same time?
I like the fact that Motion attempts to update, but the fact it does it wrong is a bummer. I suppose if this only happens when the two programs are open one could simply close motion, change one or two layers in photoshop, and import only those layer into Motion upon re-opening. Not a big deal.
I may try and see what happens... with a small project without a deadline...

I'm considering buying CC LR/PS package. My camera is Sony a7 - raw ARW. I've been editing using PSE10 and ver 8.7 of the external Adobe DNG converter. Will I be able to open the DNG files in LR with the edits preserved? Will I be able to open the PSD files in LR with the edits preserved? Any import/catalog etc issues between PSE10 and LR?

Lightroom has no problem reading DNG files. Whether the edits you have done to the DNGs you have originally edited in Photoshop Elements 10 I'm not sure. ACR edits made to DNGs are saved in the DNG file itself, as apposed to a XMP sidecar file, so LR should see those edits. At the worst you will get an exclamation mark in the upper right hand corner of the imported DNGs and clicking on that exclamation mark you will get a dialog box asking you to either import settings from disk or overwrite settings. you would select import settings from disk.

  • Changing images' formats in .PSD files.

How can I change these without copying single images to new files, changing there and copying back?
e.g. I've pasted some large tiffs into one .psd and want to convert them to jpgs, keeping the rest of my .psd as it is.

Most image formats are disc-based, meaning that the format change takes place while saving the file. If you have a .psd and want a jpeg, SAVE IT as a jpeg, etc. -- This has advantages: there is potentially a lot more information in the psd file than the jpeg, so it is wise to retain the psd, as well as the jpeg you need in the moment.

    Hello,
I'm running CS3 on W7. Photoshop works fine. Problem is, when I used to scan anything it always came in as a

    Hi Noel,
The image is black and white. Probably because I selected black and white?
I'm not sure what you mean by "Asked another way, when you do Image - Mode, is the mode showing Bitmap?"
