Simulating Fog in AF CS4

I've just downloaded the trial version of After Effects CS4 with a view to buying the Production suite soon, (I hope).
I'm at University and have used After Effects before and the tutor once showed me how to make fog using Generate/Simulation (I think) - but this was on CS2 I think.
The University say they cannot afford to Upgrade to CS4 at present, which is why I'm thinking to buy for myself.
HOWEVER! I have an animation project, in After Effects, that I need to finish in the next few days.
I'm away from Uni until the hand-in deadline.
And I can't remember how to do fog.
Anyway CS4 might have a better way than CS2 (or whatever the Uni had)
I've found Generate and Simulation but after that I've forgotten the procedure, or CS4 is different, so I'm currently looking at "Particle Playground".
But the particles are red, despite my making the solid layer (on which I'm using "Particle Playground") a nice darkish grey.
I'm also having problems with gravity and force???
Plus it needs to be much fuzzier, and not red...
Here's a screen shot showing what I have so far:

Here's what I'm aiming for, but animated:

Help?
Fran

Why are you trying to simulate fog? It's very often faster, easier, and more realistic to shoot fog or steam (or get a cheap stock footage clip of fog) and use that. Even if you need to have it flow in specific ways, you can use Distort effects and time-remapping to alter the spatial and temporal characteristics of the real fog clip. If you need to see through the dark areas of the clip, just use blending modes or perhaps use a copy of the fog layer as a
luma matte.
I just did a
Community Help search for 'fog', and I see that a link to the
"Fog, smoke, clouds, and such" section of After Effects Help is one of the results. Maybe that document will help.

"Installation, activation, and registration" of After Effects Help:
Important:
The free trial version of Adobe After Effects software does not include some features that depend upon software licensed from parties other than Adobe. For example, mocha for After Effects, some effect plug-ins, and some codecs for encoding MPEG formats are available only with the full version of Adobe After Effects software."

  • How do I hide a window that has appeared at the bottom of my screen: Validation, etc.?

    A window with the headings: Validation, Browser Compatibility, Link Checker, etc. has somehow appeared at the bottom of my screen. It takes up about 25% of the screen, and I don’t need it. I do suppose, however, that it will be useful to me someday. How do I get it to appear and, most importantly, disappear?

  • Pb with timeline-integrated MP3 when viewing from a browser

    Hi,
    I have an anim called interface.swf which is loading an intro
    called intro.swf.
    That intro is infact a compositing anim whose timeline
    wontains some MP3 sounds overlapping one another and beginning at
    different times.
    All is working fine when I run my interface.swf file in a
    standalone flash player or directly from flash, BUT when launching
    it in a web browser (Firefox or IE), one and only one MP3 sound
    (each time the same sound), is beginning at the beginning of my
    intro anim instead of the frame it is assigned to in my timeline.
    It looks as if that very MP3 sound doesn't care about the frame at
    which it begins.
    It is really strange and it occurs only when viewing it in a
    browser (on a server or in local).
    Has such a problem already been noticed? It is very strange
    Is there any explananation?
    Thanks

    hi Ned,
    I currently downloading the tutorial link you posted.
    Do you have any idea what is really happening? Because I really wanted to have a loading text only before the whole site is loaded. The SIMULATED DOWNLOAD in Flash CS4 is working great but whenever copy it in my hosting server and view it in my browser the preloader is not working.
    Thank you for your immediate response.

  • Preloader not working in AS3 when viewing in a browser

    Hi there, It's me again Ysong.
    I have a problem regarding PRELOADING.
    MY TIMELINE:
    • First frame -- dynamic text which is my preloader with AS3 in it. NO MORE OBJECT in the frame only text which is dynamic.
         stop();
         loaderInfo.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, updatePreloader);
         function updatePreloader(evtObj:ProgressEvent):void
              var percent:Number = Math.floor((evtObj.bytesLoaded*100)/evtObj.bytesTotal);
              myLoadText.text = "Loading..." + percent+"%";
              if (percent==100){
                        nextFrame();
    • Second frame -- the whole site in MOVIE CLIP which will be loaded after the preloading ends.
    ***The whole SWF file is only 600KB when publishing.
    ***When simulating download the preloader is working.
    MY PROBLEM:
    Whenever I uploaded these two files: (1) index.swf and (2) index.html, the preloader doesn't work. When viewed in browser it apprears to be white screen. After a couple of minutes, the index.swf appears and the preloader is not appearing as it should be. With (2), I didn't change anything on Dreamweaver just upload the file published by Flash Professional CS4.
    WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? Can anyone help me with this. I've uploaded (PUT) the files through Dreamweaver with a testing server configured.
    Thank you & Regards,

  • Animation in illustrator cs4: pan & rotate across large image while animating text?

    Hi there -
    I have a fairly large circular starmap image - it's a fantasy piece simulating an ancient painted star map with stars, ancient constellation figures, and calligraphic text. Basically a bitmap background from PShop, vector layers with stars, constellations and text. I want to export from Illustrator to Flash a number of short 'movies' of different views of this artwork panning from one point to another with possible zoom and rotation around the image as it pans. I also want to animate one or more of the constellation shapes as the movie pans, as well as adding momentary effects to some of the text.
    I'm familiar with setting up a non-panning animation in illustrator using layers as animation 'cells' and exporting to Flash. But is it possible to do this while moving across a large piece of artwork? How can I capture and export a specific 'view' which moves across the larger image and/or zooms in or out, while also animating a shape or text glow for example? Would this be accomplished with a mask set to the aspect ratio of the final movie which is moved/resized/rotated from layer to layer?
    Is this even possible in Illustrator CS4? I'm not familiar with Premier or AE, hoping to stay within Illy and Flash.
    Thanks!

    Thanks Monica,
    After researching, it looks like Sony Vegas can be used to create a freeflowing video 'fly-over' of the artwork. And then at specific points I can import and animate the Illustrator vector pieces with After Effects - just a 'bit' of a learning curve now...

  • Blu-ray Motion Menus in Encore CS4

    Okay. Just upgraded to Encore CS4 from CS3. Few nice changes.
    Have crashed about 10 times (in one hour) doing simple things like, assigning folders, playing video, adding menus. Can anyone say maintenance release???
    Here's a question...
    WHY CAN'T I SEE THE VIDEO I HAVE ASSIGNED TO A MENU WHEN I SIMULATE?
    This was working in CS3 now it's NOT in CS4. Tried on two different machines, one with ATI card an the other with nVidia!
    ADOBE... are you there???

    That's right. CS4 simply behaves different to CS3!
    I have never had to render out a menu to preview it. We only create motion menus for Blu-ray and only use highlight layers from Photoshop. In CS3, when you right clicked on a menu in Encore and clicked "simulate from here", you would see your highlight layers over the video immediately.
    NOW, with CS4, you must render out the menu after clicking "simulate from here" to see it. VERY annoying but I'm sure Adobe did this for a good reason.
    Pop-up menus I am glad to report actually work! We haven't figured out how to create motion pop-up menus yet but I suspect this is not available yet in Encore.
    If anyone knows any differently, I'd love to hear it.
    What's fixed and I'm SO GLAD is that during simulation, the SKIP FORWARD chapter button WORKS!!! In CS3, you had to pause the video and then could skip forward. Now, like any other normal program, while the video is playing, you can skip forward.
    I would thank Adobe for fixing this but, let's face it, this just should have worked in CS3!

  • Cs4 as3 preloader

    Hi,
    Is there a surestarter preloader in AS3 with CS4? Meaning here, showing a progress bar or percentage value before loading the main swf, right away at the start of the  loading.
    I tried 3 different versions:
    1- I used the code from a video (and accompanying files), and simply changed the content.swf to my own swf file (rename my swf content.swf), so that the original code would load my swf instead of the original content.swf. (original content.swf was too small to see anything before loading, because my loading speed is too fast).
    Here is the code from the original preloader (loads a small swf which then loads the main swf file):
    var l:Loader = new Loader();
    l.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, loop);
    l.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, done);
    l.load(new URLRequest("content.swf"));
    function loop(e:ProgressEvent):void
    var perc:Number = e.bytesLoaded / e.bytesTotal;
    percent.text = Math.ceil(perc*100).toString();
    function done(e:Event):void
    removeChildAt(0);
    percent = null;
    addChild(l);
    and here is the link to the file:
    http://www.raidcanada.com/preloader-org-test.html
    2- used the code suggested, which does the preloading directly in the main swf file:
    stop();
    //Import the required assets
    import flash.display.*;
    //Stop the playhead while loading occurs
    this.stop();
    //Create a listener to call the loading function as the movie loads
    this.loaderInfo.addEventListener (ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, PL_LOADING);
    /*This is the main function, basically it grabs the total and loaded bytes,
    calculates a percentage, and displays it by stretching the bar and adjusting
    the textfield display. If your bar/textbox instancenames are NOT lbar/lpc,
    you'll need to adjust this code to match your instance names*/
    function PL_LOADING(event:ProgressEvent):void {
    var pcent:Number=event.bytesLoaded/event.bytesTotal*100;
    //Stretch the bar
    lbar.scaleX=pcent/100;
    //Display the % loaded in textfield
    lpc.text=int(pcent)+"%";
    //If the movie is fully loaded, kick to the next frame on the main timeline
    //You may wish to change the gotoAndStop(2) to a gotoAndPlay(2)
    if(pcent==100){
    this.gotoAndPlay(2);
    This one doesn't work either, and if you refresh the page, you get only the bar, instead of refreshing the main swf.
    http://www.raidcanada.com/test/test-2.html
    3- use the code suggested to replace the preceding version:
    stop();
    addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,checkLoad);
    function checkLoad(e:Event):void {
    var pcent:Number=this.loaderInfo.bytesLoaded /this.loaderInfo.bytesTotal*100;
    lbar.scaleX=pcent/100;
    lpc.text=int(pcent)+"%";
    if (pcent==100) {
    removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,checkLoad);
    this.gotoAndPlay(2);
    This one loads correctly (without the percentage or progress bar) and the refresh is OK.
    http://www.raidcanada.com/test/test-1.html
    The idea is to have this page load correctly showing a percentage sign and a progress bar until the loading is complete for this page:
    http://www.raidcanada.com/entete-multi-hiver-1-test.html
    Every time I test the swf directly in Flash CS4 with the simulated download, I get the progress bar and percentage correctly.
    I also tried with Firefox and get the same results.
    FLAs are at:
    http://www.raidcanada.com/test/test-1.fla
    http://www.raidcanada.com/test/test-2.fla
    and screenshots of FLASH (showing the progress bar in "test movie" with simulated download):
    http://www.raidcanada.com/test/screenshot-test-1.jpg
    http://www.raidcanada.com/test/screenshot-test-2.jpg
    Am I missing something?
    THank you in advance

    Hi,
    I am using Internet Explorer 8, version 8.0.7600.16385 with Windows 7 Ultimate or Firefox 3 version 3.5.9
    If I flush the cache and load the page:
    http://www.raidcanada.com/entete-multi-hiver-1-test.html
    It takes about 5 seconds with a blank screen before I get the main swf displayed.
    If I load the page: http://www.raidcanada.com/test/test-1.html
    It takes about 1 second with a blank screen before I get the main swf displayed. The main swf file is much smaller.
    I also did a lot of tests, and still the same problem. Temporarely, on the production site, I ended up installing a static Image saying "Loading", without the code, which then loads the large swf. But some customers are seeing the "Loading" for 14 sec to 24 seconds, depending of the swf file.
    I know the code suggested is probably working with CS3 and AS2, but I need to make it work with CS4 and AS3, because my other code is all in AS3, built with CS4. As I said before, if I make a simulation, the simulation is perfect.
    Thanks

  • Using swc in AIR project built with CS4

    Hi,
    excuse my poor english, I hope I am in the good place.
    I use Flash CS4 to build an AIR 1.5 Application.
    In the library path of ActionScript 3 I add an swc (textLayout.swc) needed to display hebrew text. While developing with flash, it works fine.
    But when I publish .air file, the application works fine until it needs the classes of the swc ( TextFlow does not appear ).
    So I don't know what to do for the published application uses correctly the swc classes.
    Thank you for your help.

    Looking in the other areas it seems you'll need to use the command line. Try this in Terminal:
    svn checkout http://native-media-picker.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ native-media-picker-read-only
    That should put all the source into your home folder. There is a not too informative PDF to read, and various source files, geared towards Flash Builder. The examples are also more elaborate than you need. So, find the ANE itself and add that to a test FLA, and try these lines:
    import com.haitrinh.NativeMediaPicker.NativeMediaPicker;
    var p:NativeMediaPicker = new NativeMediaPicker();
    p.showMediaPicker();
    Unfortunately, it doesn't work with the Simulator, so you have to do tests to an actual device. But believe it or not, those three lines is enough to show your music collection and to let you play a song!

  • CS4 Motion Menus

    I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but in CS4 (Vista 64bit) it take around an hour to render 7 motion menus that run for 53secs.  If I make the exact same project in CS3 (XP Pro 32bit) they take 3 minutes! (Not direct from timeline - but from m2v and wav so the commonality is the same.  Booting is from different drives in the same computer.)
    Has anyone else had this issue - and more importantly - what's the solution?  I'm guessing it's simple but I can't find it, and it's a pain having to keep re-booting the compuer in order to swap between the two every time I make a DVD.

    Hi there, I've been trying to deploy one of my AIR apps on the BlackBerry Tablet (PlayBook) Simulator and and have run into a problem packaging the .bar file using the command line.  I started this off by reading the article at:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/devices/articles/blackberry_playbook_battery.html
    I followed some of the steps there, but found this article on how to package my files using a command line more helpful (the Adobe article doesn't even explain how to package the .bar file using the command line):

  • Captivate 4 will not record software simulation with Windows 7

    Hi,
    I have a Dell M6400 labptop, 32-bit, operating system is Windows 7.  The patch I downloaded through Help->Updates-> on Captivate fixed
    my microphone problem, but did not help the software simulation problem.
    I get as far in the process as having the screen setup with the red bounding box and controls visible.  After choosing automatic I then click on the record button.  There is a shutter sound, but it won't save anything.  I get back to Captivate and it has not recorded anything.
    I then installed it on my main computer which is 32-bit and uses windows xp.  I did exactly the same thing as my above mentioned laptop and it did the software capture beautifully.  So it must be the Windows 7.
    I am disappointed that the patch didn't fix that.  Will one be coming soon that will?

    Okay, I have been trying to use Photoshop CS4 Extended as my software simulation.  It refused to work on Captivate 4
    numerous tries, but now for some reason it is working fine.  The only thing that I did different was to go into Photoshop's
    preference-->performance--> and the openGL was unchecked and I checked it.   I think that Photoshop had a problem and turned off the
    the openGL.  I have the latest update for my graphic card, so I'm not sure why it affected the GPU.
    I didn't think to try other programs, but now I have, and they are working fine too.
    It could be that the problem was with Photoshop instead of Captivate.

  • Pause doesn't work in simulation

    Hello all the freinds
    I try to capture an elearning with my adobe captivate cs4 and it realy works very nice ,but I can't pause my simulation ,when I press PAUSE key ,it doesn't pause the simulatin ,but the End key works and end the simulation ,
    would you please help me
    I appreciate you

    Hi there
    Are you talking about trying to pause playback of a recorded demonstration? For example, you recorded a series of steps, you are playing it back and you are trying to press Pause to stop playback?
    Pause is intended to suspend the recording process. Perhaps you began recording a series of steps, a window popped up unexpectedly, so you press Pause so Captivate doesn't record your action of dealing with the sudden new window. You deal with it, press Pause again and resume your recording.

  • AE CS4  Color management with HDTV

    Working with the Sony EX1 and EX3 which according to Sony engineers works in the 709 HDTV colorspace.
    This space is about a dead ringer for sRGB when overlayed in Colorthink. The issue I am having is that if you actually assign the 709 or sRGB profile to a still image that is captured off a recorded clip, the blues are out of wack. I can export a single frame of the color bars from the Sony application, and the frame is tagged sRGB. Open the image in Photoshop CS4 or AE CS4 and use the embedded profile and the bars look purple. Apply no color management, and the lineup looks correct, nice and blue. Anyone know what is going on here?
    I'm not exactly sure how to integrate AE sequences if assigning the 709 output profile is going to wack the colors.
    Yes the monitor is calibrated, its the NEC 3090 (12 bit Hardware LUT) with Spectraview II.
    TIA,
    Cris Daniels

    ok, I think I am onto something. My footage is 709, and my workspace is 709. It defaults to "none", but I change that to the 709HD profile. I am not checking any of the linear options because it is all 8-bit footage and if this is anything like Photoshop, 8-bit data in a linear space is a no-no.
    Here is the $64,000 question, what the heck does the "Use display color managment" option in the "view" menu actually do?
    At first I though that I should leave this on, but THIS option is what is wacking my footage. If I leave that setting off (unchecked), my colors look ok. Even if I leave this option on and set to "no output simulation" it changes the preview.
    Right now I am a little confused as to exactly how that "use display color management" functions. It almost looks like turning it on is somehow double color managing my display and therefore the weird color shift. Is it safe to assume that AE is already using my colorsync profile like it does in Photoshop and that I do not need to check the "use display color management" at all?
    For what its worth, the AE color when setup correctly (uncheck the display color management), matches the Sony HDCAM clip browsing and transfer software, and Photoshop. Originally I was comparing AE to Premiere Pro, and Premiere Pro doesn't match anything perfectly (grrrrr....) but at least I now have three apps matching up great.
    Premiere Pro is weak on color management to say the least, and I've heard that it does not correctly display the Sony HD footage, so looking for a total match to AE is probably a dead end.
    Anyway, if you can explain the display color management option I can get my head around that a little better.

  • Is this possible with Spry menu and Dreamweaver cs4?

    I just starting to learn DreamWeaver cs4 and Spry, I am building a website that has a flash banner, menu bar(which is using the Spry Menu Bar, and a area for content.  I have set up the content area with a DIV tag content_column.  Now, I would like to have the link from the menu bar, populate the "content_column" with a external web page.  I know that I can use the _parent, _blank, etc. setting for the target which just opens that link into a new browser page or replaces my current page,  but I would like that link to open in the "content_column" part of my web site.  The reason why I want this to happen, is so that the whole page, including the banner doesnt have to load ever single time the user click on a differnt menu option.  These external pages will have different elements in them suchs as text, images, and .swf files.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gregg

    Gregg,WELCOME!!! To the Dreamweaver Spry Forum! I see it is your first post...
    Instead of using frames (of any kind) to show "other" web pages within your present page, try out the Spry Tabbed Panels widget.
    I think it will do what you want. I've used it quite a bit, in various incarnations, and it is quite satisfactory in not redrawing the page every time you strike a tab.
    Here's a link to some Spry simulations: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/spry_simulations.html

  • Poser, Collada and CS4 not working...

    I upgraded to CS4 for one reason only. The ability to paint directly on figures. So far I can't get my figure to open in Photoshop after having used the Collada exporter in Poser. Error message is, "The Photoshop 3D file format cannot Parse this file.
    I can open .obj files exported from Poser but I need the Collada exporter for resizing the tiny Poser figures. This works in CS3, what's wrong with CS4?
    Mimi

    I'm sorry to be so long in getting back to you. I understand what your issues are, and I have had lots of problems moving 3D models from one program to another myself. Do you have any 3D program other than Poser? I'm actually not using Photoshop myself for what you are trying to do. I have used Cinema 4D in the past, and that allows one to pull in Poser models directly and one can use the included BodyPaint to paint in 3D with layers. It is better than Photoshop for that, but leaves something to be desired if you want to paint a displacement map (where you need to use zbrush or mudbox). I've used Maya, and its painting part is worse than Photoshop. Recently, I've used Autodesk's Softimage and imported the collada models. They require a considerable amount of reweighting to work, but Softimage is a great program for modeling and animating (probably the best). In Softimage, I use the BodyPaint plugin to do what you are wanting to do. It works, and Photoshop is not quite ready for prime time for 3D painting, in my opinion. The Poser collada export is problematic in most programs. I could never get textures to import into Houdini correctly. The collada export works best with Softimage, but one still needs to fix transparency and bump issues. My experience with older versions of DAZ studio were that they were very buggy and not to be recommended.
    I wish I could give you better advice. The rescaling issue is difficult to fix without a real 3D program. I can rescale models easily in most programs (Maya, Softimage, Houdini, Cinema 4D, etc.) but not in Poser. I export collada with 1000% scaling for Softimage, and as you say, you can't do that with obj models. (you can scale obj models in most 3D programs and then export them to Photoshop, Zbrush, Mudbox, etc., but you need a "real" 3D program. Poser was made for people who like to pose human models, but it is very weak in rendering, creating models, simplifying complex polygons, simulations, and about every standard thing one does in a real program.
    I haven't used blender, but it is a free 3D program and pretty powerful if you can get around its archaic interface. You might try exporting an obj file from poser and rescaling it in blender and then pulling it up in Photoshop. It is worth a shot.
    All the best,
    Philo
