Simulation/Exercise Questions

Please post questions related to the simulated SAP environment and exercises in this thread.
Thanks

Thanks for the feedback Tim!.  Great points.  I'll try to address them all.  As a preface to all my answers, you are completely free to make students complete the exercises in a live SAP system if you place a higher value on learning the SAP navigation and peculiarities. The focus of the sims is to show how the processes in the book are executed in enterprise systems in the most simple way possible, not to teach them how to use SAP. In theory, we could have used Quickbooks or any other system for the exercises (but I would be unemployed now if we did :{) We also designed the book and sims for schools that were NOT necessarily members of the SAP UA program and don't have access to an SAP system.  With those design goals in mind, perhaps my answers below will make more sense.
Are there any plans to continue the development/refinement of the simulations? i.e. a version 2?
> yes, just waiting on a critical mass of feedback from classroom experiences.
I've tried out the simulations and although I think it is a great idea to try to simplify learning and usage of SAP, I see several areas where they could be improved:
> Remember, the sims aren't SAP training exercises, they're process execution exercises. We're not really concerned if they remember all the SAP navigation stuff.  They are designed for a freshman in an Intro to MIS course, not for a typical, standard SAP course- although they could be modified for that purpose.
1) mullti-step instructions are given on a screen, then on the next screen there is no ability to get additional guidance, a reminder of what you are supposed to be doing, or to go back to the previous instructions. I suppose this would be ok if the students also had printed instructions somewhere, but that somewhat limits the value of online exercises. I didn't see any obvious printable instructions anywhere.
> We tried to make the sims simple enough and short enough that if they didn't remember or figure it out quickly, they could quit and start over at any time. The exercises are broken up into discreet process steps.  They can just start over that step anytime they get stuck.  We toyed with the idea of having a "help" button on each page, but found that quitting and starting over was just as effective and it made the student really pay attention the next time. Plus, we wanted to avoid students just clicking their way thru the exercises blindly, so they have to really think about where they are clicking and why.
2) The simulations don't appear to involve the use of number or text input, so you just click around with a mouse until you happen to click on the right thing.
> Some exercises use more text and number inputs than others, but most use about 80% clicks and 20% text inputs.  We purposefully made them as point and click as possible to remove a lot of "SAP" things that weren't directly related to the process concepts in the exercise, including the complete removal of transaction codes.  It is a HIGHLY simplified SAP environment and isn't designed to be a true SAP training class.  The students have to know exactly where to click and why depending on the process step, not necessarily how to manipulate the SAP interface like an expert. Theoretically, you can just click every pixel on the page till you get the right one, but that will get old after a couple steps and they'll start paying attention to what they're doing.  Plus, the quiz at the end of each set of exercises tests them on things that actually went on in the exercise.  If they don't pay attention to where and why they're clicking, they won't pass the quiz-- which is graded pass/fail.
3) There are multiple ways to do something in SAP like closing a window and returning to the main menu, but the simulation only accepts one possible way as being the correct way. This is frustrating as I needed to close a window and was doing it the way I would in real life, but I had to remember the way the simulation wants me to close a window.
>again, we highly simplified the SAP environment to remove everything that didn't add value to the process learning from the chapters.  The simulations really are "simulations", so we don't show them the 10 ways to do the same thing you find in the real SAP system.  Since the sims aren't graded except for completed/not completed, the students can do them as many times as they want.  No pressure to get everything right and they typically figure out after the first step where to click once they've messed up a couple times.
Hope that helps.
I'd love any other feedback you have, especially what students think of the sims.

  • Captivate 4 Simulation in Question Pool

    Hello all,
    I have created quizes using some simulation slides.  One slide, click where type questions.
    Example.  With one click, print the Excel spreadsheet.
    I looked through the forum and have found nothing relating to putting simulation slides into a Question Pool.  I guess the first question is; is it possible.
    Second question: if it is possible, how?
    Does anyone have experience with this?
    Thanks in advance
    Terry Dicken

    Hi Terry
    To my knowledge only Question Slides may be part of a Pool. As you are talking about Animations, my guess is that it won't be possible because of the way the developers have structured Captivate and the Question Pooling feature.
    Perhaps others have a different viewpoint.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Basic simulation loop question

    Hi. I've been searching this board for quite some time, but couldn't find what I'm really looking for.
    I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to Labview. I'm working on a school project that includes controlling the pneumatic actuated inverted pendulum via Labview 2011 and cRIO9074, and I'm having trouble understanding all of the parameters in the simulation loop that grant real time simulation. What really bothers me are three parameters and their correlation: scan period (scan engine properties), step size and period (simulation properties). Right now I've achieved real time simulation with this parameters: scan period (10ms), step size (0.01ms), period (1(I don't know what unit)). When I try to change scan period to 5ms, the whole simulation speeds up twice ("simulation time" function displays 2s for every 1 second that passes in real time.
    So can someone please explain these parameters in normal words (context help is confusing) and how to achieve real time simulation for desired sampling time?
    Thanks in advance!

    There's more extensive help than the context help. Even from the context help, you can click "detailed help" to get to LabVIEW's help file. Did you look through this material? Here are a few tips:
    for real-time, only use a fixed step solver (RK1-4)
    choose the step size you desire, then select the "1 kHZ" or "1 MHz" clock. Select "Auto Period" and then you don't have to worry about calculating the period.
    Step size determines how much time is added to the simulation time every time the diagram executes. Period determines how many ticks of the hardware clock pass between every execution of the sim loop. If you want "real time" which implies that the simulation time passes at the same rate as actual time, then the "Auto Period" option will look at your step size, look at the clock you've selected, and automatically calculate the period required to run at real time.
    As stated in the help context, the unit of period depends on the clock you've selected. If you've selected a 1 kHZ clock, there are 1000 clock ticks per second and the unit of period (each clock tick) is 1 ms. If you select the 1 MHZ clock, there are 1,000,000 clock ticks per second so the unit of period is 1 us.
    Say you select the 1 kHZ clock and choose a period of 15. This means the simulation loop will execute once every 15 ms of actual time. If you want real-time, you should set the step size to 15 ms. This would cause the simulation time to advance at the same rate as actual time. If you set the step size to 30 ms, the simulation time will run twice as fast as actual time.
    I don't know anything about scan period; that is not a simulation parameter. Hope this helps, and good luck.

  • Captivate 7 Simulation Recording Question

    I'm using Captivate 7 to record a simulation requiring my learner to drag a message from one area and drop it into another. When I view the recording, all works well except the part where the learner is to actually drag and drop the message...that piece plays like a demo. Can a drag and drop simulation be recorded in Captivate 7 allowing the learner to drag the designated message to the designated area?

    You will have to create that slide from scratch, could be done with the D&D
    wizard. Dragging and scrolling during capture always results in FMR-slides.

  • Deitel, Java How To Program exercise question

    Hi, :)
    I'm new to programming and I'm using the Java How To Program Fourth Edition from Deitel and Deitel as my text. I've run into a problem with Exercise 2.16 Where I'm asked:
    "Write an application that asks the user to enter two numbers, obtains the numbers from the user and prints the sum, product, difference, and quotient of the numbers."
    From that I have written this code:
    // Exercise 2.16
    /* An application that asks the user to enter two numbers, obtains the numbers from the use and prints the sum,
    product, difference and quotient of the numbers. Using the techniques shown in Fig 2.9 */
    //Java extension packages
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class Exercise2_16{
         //Main method
         public static void main(String args[]){
         String firstNumber, secondNumber;                          //introduce variables
         int number1, number2, sum, product, difference, quotient;          //introduce variables
         firstNumber=JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter first integer:");     //Create input window
         secondNumber=JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter second integer:");     //Create input window
         number1=Integer.parseInt(firstNumber);                         //String to integer
         number2=Integer.parseInt(secondNumber);                         //String to integer
         //perform operations
         sum = number1+number2;
         product = number1*number2;
         difference = number1-number2;
         quotient = number1/number2;
         //Display results
         JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "The sum is " + sum,
         "The product is " + product, "The difference is " + difference,
         "The quotient is " + quotient, "Results", JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE);
         //End program
         System.exit(0);
         }//End main method
    }//end class Exercise2_16
    When I compile this code I get an error and I can't figure out why. Any help is really appreciated as I'm stumped and given the simplicity of the app I'm kinda bummed it has me stuck :(.

    I substituted your line and this is the error I'm receiving now:
    F:\jdk1.3\Learning Java>javac Exercise2_16.java
    Exercise2_16.java:32: unclosed string literal
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "The sum is " + sum + ", The product is" + product + ",
    The difference is" + difference + ", The quotient is" + quotient + ", \"Results\", JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE);
    ^
    Exercise2_16.java:35: ')' expected
    System.exit(0);
    ^
    2 errors
    It doesn't really matter to me if there are returns but maybe for readability there should be and so I learn how to as well.

  • NI Simulator query question

    Hello. I have an NI Instrument Simulator that I have been testing using the VISA test panel in MAX to test. I am not quite sure what is happening however, when I query a simple *IDN?, it will read 00062\r\n". Then when I query it again, it reads "National\sInstruments\sGPIB\sand\sSerial\sDevice\sSimulator\sRev\sB.1\n". When I query it again, it reads the "00062\r\n" again. It flip-flops between the two with each query. Does this me that I will need to continually query twice, to get the desired data read? I am not sure how to put this in a Vi. I have tried a lot of different things but it always come out the same. Even if I clear the register and tried an individual write then read, it does the same thing. Is this to be expected, and how do I do this within a Vi?
    Thanks much for your support.

  • PS - Simulation version made Inactive after transfer to Operative

    Hi,
    It is by process that once a simulation version is transferred to an operative project, all the active simulation of that project existing in the system till that time are flagged inactive. We need to manually set them to active again.
    I would like to know if there is a way set this default feature off or make it selective to flag only the simulation in question as inactive, and leave the others as active?

    This looks like a system error not an application error. Talk to your BASIS consultant / system administrator.

  • Why no exercise in TADM56

    I am confused why I can not find any exercise/question in TADM56. Usually there should be "Test Your Knowledge" at the end of each unit.  Please advise on how to practise?

    Why no Aqua in Apples latest version of iTunes?
    Only the development engineers could answer that question, and they don't participate here. But based on the screen shots Apple's showing for Leopard, it does appear to be the forthcoming standard look. If you don't like it, you'll probably want to submit feedback to Apple.

  • PM, QPSK, QAM, OFDM software simulations and examples

    Hi everyone,
                       I am trying to find examples on Phase Modulation and other modulation examples (but currently PM modulation is the 1st priority) but i look for the tutorial in NI website they only provide Amplitude and Frequency Modulations Examples on software simulation. Anybody knows where to find or even has this modulation example can you please tell me because i really need it for my project. Thanks!

    Hi,
        actually i just trying to use examples in NI for my project as a VI exercise  to let understand the concept of each modulation. Because in NI tutorial website, there are simple software simulation exercises to let people download and know the concept of each modulation. I am trying to use these examples in my project to let people understand more in the modulation. Please see the exercise i have uploaded you will understand more. I have downloaded AM, FM, ASK, FSK and PSK but i still need others. Now, i trying to finish the catergory for analog modulation, AM, FM and PM. So i finding PM modulation now, the url u have written i seen it before but i think i cant find what i want. that's y i am also asking if anyone happen to have it or create it by yourself, would you mind 'sharing' it with me by uploading the files if you happen to have it.

  • Pause for user click missing after Seamless Tabbing fix.

    I am upgrading a project from Captivate 5.0 to 5.5. Two of the lessons that worked fine in 5.0 have problems in 5.5. Both lessons use the Tab key to move from field to field in a data row and then the Enter key to calculate at the end of the row. This worked fine in 5.0. In 5.5, pressing Tab caused jump to browser address window. I searched blog and found following solution to add:    so.addParam(seamlessTabbing:, :false:);        to the htm file generated when publishing the file. This is not a desirable solution for long term course maintenance, but it did work. Unfortunately a new problem then appeared. The project moved ahead without waiting for user input in the simulation exercises.
    For slides with click boxes using Tab shortcut key and no other interactive objects, the movie just skipped ahead without waiting for user click. I would like the project to pause until the user presses the Tab key and then move to the next slide.  The properties for the click boxes are:
    Action:
    On success: Go to the next slide
    Attempts: Infinite
    Allow mouse click - yes
    Shortcut: Tab
    Options:
    Captions: Failure only
    Others: Pause for Success/Failure Captions and Pause project until user clicks
    Timing:
    Display for: Rest of slide
    Appear after 0 seconds   (I have played around with this setting, but it does not seem to make a difference.)
    For slides with Text Entry, the failure captions display before the user has a chance to input anything. Sometimes the captions flash several times at random. I would like the failure captions to only display when the user  enters an answer that does not match the stored answers.  The properties for the text entry boxes are:
    General:
    Default text: blank
    Retain Text - checked
    Validate User Input - checked
    Var Associated: Text Entry Box ## (## changes from slide to slide)
    On Focus Lost: No action
    Action:
    On Success: Go to the next slide
    Attempts: Infinite
    Shortcut: Tab
    Options:
    Captions: Failure only
    Others: Pause for Success/Failure Captions
    Timing:
    Display For: Rest of slide
    Appear after: 0.5 sec.
    Pause After: 1 sec
    Transition: No Transition
    To test whether it was something I was doing in the editing, I went back to the original 5.0 version of the lesson and imported into 5.5 again and published without doing any editing. The lessons that worked fine in 5.0 did not work in 5.5. Then I tried replacing all the click boxes with new ones created in 5.5. That did not work. I tried adjusting the timing. That did not work. For the text entry boxes, I tried using Show Button, creating transparent button with Tab shortcut. That did not work. Several of these suggestions were ones that I found elsewhere in the Blog with similar but not identical problems. I never found a problem that combined the seamlessTabbing with the missed pauses.
    I am puzzled and frustrated that these lessons that worked fine in 5.0 don't work in 5.5. Our primary edit is only to update the screen images and add a few new fields. I would often reposition an object on the slide, but not change its properties. Since most of the lessons are working fine in 5.5 and only these two that heavily use the Tab key are not working in 5.5. I don't really have the option of going back to 5.0. I need to put them in an aggregator and they all need to be the same version.
    Is there a patch or a quick fix? Also, can the patch to the htm file be built in or is that what is causing the problem? For future course maintenance, it will be complicated to have to treat these two lessons specially. Also, we usually link to the swf file and not the htm file. Our users often use browsers other than Internet Explorer.
    Any suggestions?   Thanks in advance.

    It would seem Intego Virus Barrier X6 has an intermittent habit of putting the IP address of Apple TV into the Blocked Addresses list despite having checked the 'Trust Apple TV' box and inputting the address into the Trusted Addresses list. Over the course of less than a year this has occurred approximately 4 times to me. My last variation on getting to the root of the problem was to lock the settings with the padlock. I will monitor the situation and should it happen one more time will notify Intego of this 'bug'.

  • Who'd like to test a new Drag and Drop Interactive Widget?

    It's taken about 6 months of every spare minute we could find but we're finally ready to do a round of Alpha testing for our new Drag and Drop Interactive Widget for Cp4 and 5.  This post is to ask for a handful of volunteers to test the new widget over the next week creating drag and drop interactions in both Cp4 and Cp5.
    If you've already tried our well-known Drag and Drop Lite Question Widget, but were a bit frustrated by the limitations that the quiz question format placed on your creativity, we think you'll be blown away by what this new Interactive Widget can do.  It does everything the current question widget does, aside from the aspects that are unique to question types (Review Area, Retake Quiz, etc) plus a whole lot more.  Due to the extra functionality, this widget has twice as much code as our last one.
    Some of the features:
    You can have as many widgets as you want on a single slide and each can be addressing a different drag and drop scenario.
    You can reference the same drag and target objects from different widgets to create different.
    Since they are interactive widgets, you can use the widget success/failure criteria to trigger Advanced Actions.  This opens up a lot of possibilities for game interactions.
    You can score each widget differently so that OnSuccess they will each report different scores for dragging the same objects.  This means you can have Conditional Scoring and more than one correct answer for a given problem.
    You can set one of the widgets to have its Preferences be used for all widgets on the slide so that you don't need to set all widget preferences individually, thus saving a lot of time.
    You can set Preference Priority for each widget to configure which widgets will have "right of way" if there is a potential conflict in preferences.  For example, if one widget wants one type of snapping behaviour on an object but another widget wants the same object to snap differently, the widget with the higher Preference Priority will dominate.
    You can nominate other interactive objects (including clickboxes or other widgets) to act as Submit button and Clear button to create a simulated quiz question.
    Since this widget is an Interactive widget, it also has the same advanced Pausing override behaviours we built into our Event Handler widget (http://www.infosemantics.com.au/eventhandler)  So you can have users stay on the same slide playing with the drag and drop interaction for as long as they like without progressing to the next slide until they want to.
    Plus other stuff I can't think of right now.
    If you decide to volunteer to participate in this Alpha testing, please don't use this widget for any production Captivate projects you may have.  The Alpha and Beta versions of the widget will be time-bombed to stop working after a couple of weeks so that we don't have buggy versions running around later.
    As I said at the beginning, we only need a handful of testers, we need people using either Cp4 or Cp5, and you need to do this testing over the next week so that we can then address any issues you find and release a debugged Beta version for more testing.
    Anyone wanna play?
    If you do want to volunteer, send me a private message on this forum with your email address so I can send you a widget and instructions.  We'll only be taking the first dozen or so people that are willing to contribute time and feedback.
    Cheers,
    Rod Ward

    Hi Sandy,
    If you hover the mouse over Rod's avatar, there is an e-mail address visible. For a private message; double-click on his avatar and you'll find the button private message in that dialog box,

  • Trying to figure out how to get custom quiz concept to work

    OK so I've been trying to get this concept to work in CP4. I have simulation quiz questions that gives the user 2 attempts to answer the quiz. The one hitch is that if the user get the question wrong the first time it gives them an "incorrect try again" message and if they get it wrong the second time it gives them an "incorrect please review section...." message. Now I've been trying to get this to work many ways and haven't been able to get the quiz to score right due to the fact I can't get CP to let me use the multiple incorrect feedbacks in a single click box.
    I've tried setting up the questions using 2 click boxes (each click box has a different incorrect feedback message) but I run into the issue of if I answer the question right the first time then the second click box goes unscored and throws off the percentage.  I've been trying to figure out a way to manipulate the captivate system variables (cpinfoquizpasspoints, cpinfototalquestionsperproject, cpinfopointsscored) but I can't for the life of me figure out how to update the variables (ex. overide the cpinfototalquestionsperproject with my own number or add additional points to the cpinfopointsscored variable if the user gets the question right the first time. Basically I need to fig out a way to get this to work and ultimately be able to communicate to a Sumtotal LMS what the results are. I'm very open to suggestions
    Thanks
    B
    btw. I'm really disappointed that CP4 allows different feedback messages on multiple attmeps for their built in questions but not for custom click box questions!!!!

    I would try the multi choice like captiv8r said. if that doesn't work try a clickbox for each answer and:
    Some quick notes for set up. Slide XX represents the slide that will contain the next question in the quiz. You may want to create all the slides (even if they are blank) as place holders for each question in the quiz. So if a question has 4 possible answers that's gonna be 4 slides for that question. If you have 5 questions and they all have 5 answers then you want to create 25 slides for the questions. (I think I did the math right on that )
    Change the properties for the click box to on success: go to next slide (unless this is the correct answer then select jump to slide XX). Change the options
    Under Options Only check Success Caption, Pause project until user clicks and pause for success/failure captions.
    Click OK......You will be given a click box with a green box that says type success  text here.
    Right click on the green box and select Properties
    If this box is the right answer type in Correct or something to that extent. If its the wrong answer type in "Answer is wrong because ..bla bla bla..... reasons". You can format the font to be red or green and choose the appropiate caption type to match your color scheme (or create your own custom caption)
    Click OK.
    After that all you have to do is duplicate the click box (right click on the click box and select duplicate) and edit the caption to be either "correct" or "answer is wrong because....."
    Once you have all your captions in place you can copy the entire contents of the slide an paste it into the rest of the slides set up for that question (remember if the question has 4 answers then thats 4 slides for that question)
    repeat steps 1 - 9 for the rest of the questions.
    Some things you want to consider. If you only want to give the user say 2 attempts per question then you want to modify the setup to only 2 slides per question. That way if they get it wrong on teh second attempt they are advanced to the next question. If you are scoring this quiz you will have to set-up some variables for scoring.
    The method above is what I used to answer my own question from the original post.... Lots of work but it got the job done! Good luck.

  • Example problem using 'this'

    Tried working out an exercise question from a tutorial book im reading and one of the questions was :
    Create a class with two methods. Within the first method,
    call the second method twice: the first time without using this, and the
    second time using this—just to see it working
    Read through alot of how to use this but not entirely sure how id call a method using this from the same method
    as i called it regularly from .

    Sample code that would do same is :-
    class Try1{
    public void a()
              System.out.println("In A");
              b();
              this.b();
         public void b(){
              System.out.println("In B ");
         public static void main(String [] args){
              Try1 t = new Try1();
              t.a();
    Output :-
    java Try1In A
    In B

  • SPICE Netlist Error: Unable to parse parameter name

    The history so far (using MS11):
    I tried to make a new component, i.e. the CNY70.
    Therefore I needed the simulation model. So I designed a simple subckt that I tested, and ok, it works.
    Subckt schematic exported a netlist, lines added:   .SUBCKT <name> 1 2 3 4   and   .ENDS
    This .cir file used as Model for the new part I created.
    And then....used this new part in a testschematic.....and the simulation is aborted:::
    SPICE Netlist Error in schematic RefDes 'd1', element 'ud1': Unable to parse parameter name
    SPICE Netlist Error in schematic RefDes 'd1', element '<unknown>': Due to errors, the component 'ud1' has been omitted from the simulation.
    QUESTION: what did I do wrong / what am I missing in the Subckt file????
    I looked in some modelfiles of opto-manuf. like Avago, and they all make use of V-controlled-I sources etcetera.

    Hello Capera,
    I understand that spending alot time and ending up with an error can be extremely frustrating.
    I did some further testing and it seems like I get the same error even with an empty model.
    It seems to not be purely linked to this model.
    Which specific steps did you follow?

  • What gen of iPod classic is this?

    I'm not sure if this is gen 6 or 7, is there any way to tell through the details?

    Well - in structure, it is nearest to the Command pattern as far as I can tellOr Strategy. Or Builder. Several design pattenrs may share the same class structure, the difference is in the context, forces, and the parts one want to be flexible. And if someone wants to make it explicit which pattern is applied, they should name things accordingly.
    As Saish said this example shows little more that inheritance at work. Not a pattern in itself, but a core element of the language. Trying to "identify" a pattern that is not obvious from the context is either:
    - a sign that the original coder completely missed the point of using a pattern (which is, as Saish said too, assentially about communication)
    - a sign that the maintenance coder is looking for patterns where there aren't
    - an exercise question
    but it differs in so much as its motivation is to polymorphically allow the use of different exporters rather than provide a set of action commands.That shouldn't count as a difference, merely as an "application" (it's perfectly valid to have a hierarchy of commands all devoted to exporting, although, as stated, if the original coder applied the Command pattern, he should have made it explicit, by renaming the interface, e.g. to ExportCommand).
