Since 10.5.6 outgoing mail slow ??
Since moving to 10.5.6 my outgoing mail is slower.
Previously if I sent just a simple email with just a few lines of text it would go instantly.
Now the same type of message seems to take anywhere up to 20 secs to go and during that time I get the spinning graphic next to the out folder or sent folder.
Not the spinning beach ball of death, just the normal spinning graphic which I expect to get when sending an email with a large attachment or lots of graphics.
Has anyone else noticed this ?
I am quite certain that I had the sound effects check box in system preferences activated prior to the 10.5.6 upgrade as I had the empty trash sounds activated. After the upgrade, something during the install process unselected this check box in system preferences because I noticed I had lost the internal Mail sounds as well as the sound for emptying the trash. When I checked preferences in Mail the check box for "play sounds in mail" was still checked but there were no more sounds. It seems odd to me that you now have to go to two different places to turn on the sound feature in Mail whereas before it was only one checkbox. How is it fixing a bug by requiring two steps instead of one? Minor point, but it is rather confusing and convoluted.

IMail keeps changing outgoing mail server to one that is offline
Since installing Lion, my outgoing mail server keeps changing to [email protected], which always shows up as offline. I keep changing it to stmp.me.com:deannanel and check "use only this server" to get my mail sent.
Next time I try to send mail, the outgoing server has changed back and mail cannot be sent.
What is going on?IMAP is enabled at GoogleMail (Login with WebBrowser) and you have read the installation manual? Normaly it works fine, creating the Google Account with Internet accounts from system preferences.
Like the incoming server, all outgoing server must have different usernames (your email addresses) and passwords. Check the correct assignment for each email account. -
How do I stop my outgoing mail being saved (in trash) every minute
Since downloading Yosemite each outgoing mail is saved every few seconds, meaning that there are, sometimes around 15 separate "savings" of one email, each with a few more words more than the previous one. These are saved in my trash box. How do you stop this from happening? I should point out that it is only mail from the Google mail box that does this, not the iCloud.
Hi Ben, see if this helps...
iCal picks wrong calendar for invites - how do I change that? -
IPhone won't send outgoing mail since upgrade to 5.0
iPhone won't send outgoing mail since upgrade to 5.0
I would manually go over each smtp setting and compare it with the mail providers guide
and if they were 100% the same then I would
get in touch with the phone company to verify if they were blocking the ports being
used by the mail service
there is no general issue with ios5 removing out going mail services or blocking ports -
Outgoing mail is REEEEEEALLY SLOW
I am transferring from Tiger to a new computer running ML . . outgoing mail is fine on my old computer. But on the new one, it's painfully horribly SLOW! "Barber pole' just spins and spins as it tries to connect to the outgoing server. FINALLY the mail gets sent. These are simple text emails with no attachments! All the settings in the new email account are exactly as they are in the old one.....
Apple says it's not their problem, the internet provider says they don't support Apple products and want to charge me a yearly fee for their tech support!
Internet connection in general is fine
Any ideas? please? All this money for a new computer and it works worse than the old one!Hi there!! same case here, and I AM REALLY MAD AND DISAPPOINTED with all this, coz i just bought this expensive supposedly perfect Macbook, and i just get troubles everyday, and no one seems to give any solution to the slowest outgoing mail in the history!!! Will somebody from the Mac team have the guts to say something?? Is going to stay like this for how long??? fed up!!!!!

Problem with outgoing mail server since getting .mac account
I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me out.
I've been using Mail for a few years now with several mail accounts. (Yahoo!, gmail, and my own domain mail). I have always been able to choose which account to send my outgoing mail FROM. That is, until I purchased a .mac account.
Since signing up for .mac all my settings are still there for my other accounts, but I have not been able to send even ONE email from any account except the .mac account.
I have tried setting up the outgoing mail servers and resetting them, but nothing works. Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?
I'm starting to consider using Yahoo! mail online for all my mail, but I would prefer to be able to click mailto links and sent right from Mail.
Thanks.Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
Where and how are you connected to the internet with the laptop, vs the desk top -- same venue -- wireless, etc?
Is the account you have set up, the same primary account with Charter that you use on the Desktop?
On the desktop Mac, in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information, when listed as the Outgoing Server, does smtp.charter.net have any Username appended to the name?
Not sure if it could be case sensitive, but have you tried lower case letters for smtp?
More info, please.

No outgoing Mail since Lion Upgrade
Purchase & installed Lion via App Store on 8/7/11 (not a clean one). Have not been able to send mail from any of my @me.com accounts since. Thank goodness I have an @att.com account and can actually get work done using that account. Meanwhile, the Mail accounts I am paying for via my MoblieMe accts are not working properly. Spent about 30-45 minutes with an "expert" yesterday. I told him that the Mail on my two laptops (these have NOT been upgraded to Lion) is working properly. He suggested I that I open the preferences in one of my laptops and "copy" the info in my Lion OS iMac24 Mail preferences and that should fix it. WRONG!
After reentering all the preference info, Mail still does not work. When I send, Mail creates a new "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) which had my username in the "In Use By Account" but there is no password info if you look in the "Advanced" window. If I put in my password, Mail still will not send out my emails.
Apple, please. Now is the time to acknowlege that there may be an issue and do what is right. At least let your customers know that your hard at work on fixing the issue(s).An amazing thing just accurred! In my original post above, I mention that I spent a bit of time taking with a genius yesterday. At 3:13 today, I get an "AppleCare Support Center" feedback request. I actually "cut & paste" my original post in the "Comments" box, add a few more comments and clicked off several "less than satisfied" buttons.
Now, after 10 days of "NO" outgoing email, Mail is working like it is suppose too! All is normal.
Who can tell what just occurred? Not me, but I am happy. AppleCare is worth it. I'll let you know if my Mail gets "pouched" later! -
Since installing Yosemite outgoing mail fails in Apple Mail. All the servers show (off line) I have checked setting and they are all okay. Incoming mail works. Any help would be appreciated.
Linc,
Hopefull this is what you asked me to do.

Slow outgoing mail DNS question
Outgoing mail is very slow for me in Leopard 10.5.2 (about 30 seconds). Other threads here have suggested I enter my ISP's DNS server number in System Preferences/Network. But there are DNS numbers already there, automatically supplied by my ISP (Charter). When I go to Advanced options, I see 4 DNS numbers, but they are greyed out and cannot be deleted (although I can add DNS numbers).
I just want my outgoing mail to get back to it's usual fast speed, but I can't figure this one out...
Thanks for any ideas!
BillI am not using port 25. I have an IMAP account to my college, and under advanced mail preferences it says port 993 with SSL checked (I think this is the correct setting). My son also has an IMAP account with his school, port 143, SSL unchecked. Sending from either is very slow (30 seconds or more). My ISP is Charter (outgoing mail server is mail.charter.net).
It's a consistent problem anyway. Every message sent out for a long time now is very slow going.
Thanks for your help -

SOLUTION FOR GMAIL:
Apple mail automatically configures gmail in Snow Leopard and enters your username as [email protected] for the outgoing mail server.
Correcting your username in the OUTGOING mail server (by selecting edit outgoing server list) to be only "username" by removing "@gmail.com" fixes this issue.
Go Daddy accounts are still a problem... working on that now...
No - I'm afraid that didn't work for me. My SMTP settings for GMAIL include only my username/password and the recommended port for outgoing GMAIL SMTP (993) / USE SSL. Whenever I try and send a message, it hangs in the Outbox, and the spinning wheel spins in "Sent". This is only since upgrading to SL. Am about to get on the phone with Apple Care because this is really getting to be a PITA. I've never had a problem using my Gmail SMTP account in Mail before this upgrade.
OK - I seem to have fixed it on my end. Try this:
The default setup in the new Mail.app (4.0) wants to place SMTP for GMAIL on port 993. Change the selection from "Custom Port" to the default - i.e. "25, 465, 587". I know there are posts above that say the preferred port for SMTP is 993, +but see+ http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=78799. The SMPT settings clearly state which ports to use (465 or 587). When I selected the default option check box in the advanced SMTP settings in Mail, Voila! Sent Mail! Hope this helps you get your outgoing mail out. -
Slow SMTP (outgoing mail) on my iPad
I am encountering an odd problem on my iPad. It takes a long time, thirty seconds to two minutes for outgoing mail to be sent. This is especially odd because I am using exactly the same SMTP settings as on my iPod Touch and MacBook and they don't have the problem. I have tried all other available port numbers for the SMTP server; this hasn't helped. Anyone have any suggestions?
I am having intermittant problems with sending email. When an email or two 'sticks' in the outbox, it seems to freeze all Mail comms, stopping incoming email traffic. Mail however also keeps on trying, so that the recipients are receiving multiple copies. Which is unfortunate as in a curious organisation, people are seeing the 'sent by iPad' tag line and understand that my new machine is causing problems.
Any help would be appreciated.

Check the outgoing mail server setting. Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional. -
Hi All,
MB Pro with Lion 10.7.2. When sending an email .me or .mac in Apple Mail, it takes a very long time to go out. Email style (with or w/o attachements) does not matter. It can take 30-60 seconds for the mail to leave. Tried at home (Comcast) and at the office (AT&T) and it does the same. The wheel spins in the email program then it sends.
I've tried deleting and reinstalling the account, no dice.
Anyone have a similar expereience or resolution?
Thanks..Sorry but can't help Oriontool....
I've got same set up and exactly same issue. I have ADSL line @ 1.5Mbps and no issues that side. All others in office (on WINDOZE) have NO issue with download speeds/internet etc.
My Mail seems to download incoming messages with not too much difficulty at speeds often over 50kbps (not often over 100 though!!) but outgoing mail is being sent in bps or up to 4kbps at top speed.
Very frustrating and I am seeing more and more similar questions being asked in forums. What going on...???
Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers... -
Aliases not displayed for outgoing mail choice
Since the birth of Mobile Me, my Mail OS X aliases are not available for new outgoing mail. I can choose them on Mobile Me, but not on my own laptop Mail.
Hi,
I've got the same problem myself! But I've been upgraded to 10.4.11 for a long time now, so that's not the easy solution for me!
I use Mail for my .mac/.me account. I use a few different .mac aliases for different groups I correspond with.
When composing a message in Mail, I am no longer getting the "From" pulldown menu near the address fields to let me select which alias I want to send the message from. It just defaults to my primary address. Even when a message is sent to me at one of the aliases and I reply to it, Mail ignores the alias and makes the new message come from my primary address instead.
When I choose "customize" from the pulldown menu near the address fields, it gives me all the other options (To, cc, bcc, etc.) but nothing to get the "From" menu back.
I can still do this from the web interface for my .me account, but I don't want to have to go to the slow and clunky web app just for this simple thing.
Btw, I tried the ol' restart the computer trick, just in case. Still have the problem.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Rick -
My signature is no longer appearing in my new outgoing mail message drafts. When I attempt to select the right signature, the dropdown in the email draft says 'none'
Under mail preferences--signatures--choose signatures it also says none and does not let me select anything though two signatures exist tied to this account.
Since I didn't create the issue I also don't know how to fix it and all attempts so far have failed. Feedback desired.Mail > Preferences > Signatures
Drag the signatures you want to use to the account. Then relaunch Mail.
