Since I can't upgrade my iPad 1 to iOS 6, is it now vulnerable to security threats?

According to my brief search on the support site, there is some discussion on this very topic. No operating system is completely secure!! Read http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5503 for iOS 6 security content. Since Apple does not want to provide support for the iPad 1, I have now stopped doing anything online that requires a password or other sensitive data. No more new apps or upgrades to my present apps. It has gone from a fantastic piece of technology to a toy in two years.

I recently tried to upgrade the software on my Ipad to IOS 4.3 (in order to get Google Earth and now I get this message:" Your Ipad can not be activated because the activiation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting your Ipad to ITunes [i did] to activate it or try again [i did sever times] in a couple of minutes. If this problem persists, contact Apple Support at apple.com/support"

You can only update to the current iOS 5.1.1.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. After you update to iOS 5.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

when i go the the settings and go to system update it says: unable to check for update an error occurred while checking for a software update. and i been having problems since the ios 8 update and this is the first time that i went on software update that it told me that. every other day it said it was up to date. please help me i tried restarting and everything and nothing works.

Hey Ncdduh. I was trying to update my iPad from work WiFi, I think that may have been the issue. I switched WiFi networks and now it's going through. My iPad was pretty close to full so I deleted iMovie freeing about a gig of space up. Unsure if that contributed to my success. In any case, I got it to work. Best of luck to you.

You can't. THe time to update to 6.1.2 was before 6.1.3 came out. All you can access is the latest update.

Just for information in case helps anyone else, I have now accessed the back-up, I tried a different password from memory but it is not the normal iTunes password I use - which is what you'd expect them to be after. Now I don't know how to get the app collection back onto the screen, they aren't opening. Wish I never had upgraded...

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If the device is jail broken - and the message is that the iPad is not eligible for the requested build - there are tons of articles on the internet that discuss how to fix the iPad. Use Google.

Can't downgrade on iOS ...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings

Sorry, I'm reposting this because of spelling error in my previous post (I must turn that 'auto-correct' off).
Since I posted my questions, the only thing I figured out was to turn the 'iCloud' in the Settings on and now the plus sign is on and all my previous appointments appeared. While this is a solution, what if I don't want to use iCloud? But I'm happy for now that my Calendar works.

Assuming you have Messages on. You can try two things the first is a simpler than the second. Go to this site https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/, click on Manage your ID, log in and check if your Apple ID for your Messages and FaceTime apps is the the same as your primary email address. When I went there I saw a message that I should make them the same, for some reason they weren't, after I clicked on the submit to make them the same I haven't had any problem with either. Previously I kept getting signed out of both and had to constantly reenter my password to get them working. Quite a few times they wouldn't connect at all.
The second thing you can try is in Settings - General - Reset, and reset all settings. You will then have to reenter a lot of information such as account user names and passwords but this seemed to correct things for a lot of people. The first option is easier and worked for me so I'd give it a try.
