Since installing Leopard (OS X 10.5.8) everything has slowed down.

Since installing Leopard (OS X 10.5.8) everything has slowed down. From powering up to powering down and everything in between, the computer has slowed down. A friend said every video I've watched - not necessarily downloaded - is on the hard drive and if I clean it up, that might help. But I don't know. I was using Tiger and everything was fine.

Hello, When I clicked on ABOUT THIS MAC, then MORE INFO, I got this:
Model Name: PowerBook G4 15"
Model Identifier: PowerBook5,6
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
Processor Speed: 1.67 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f3
I don't know how to tell how much memory is being used, but I don't have that much on it. I have quite a few icons sitting on the desktop and I've never done any maintenance, it never needed it so far. I've owned this computer almost 3 years. I bought it used, still under the 2 year AppleCare.
Thanks,
Dennis

  • Mac Mail application won't open since installing Leopard

    Hi Folks,
This is my first post - I have usually been able to locate the help I need just by searching through the discussions, but haven't found anything on this issue (hope I didn't miss it). Since installing Leopard on my MacBook (2 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 80 GB HD) I cannot open the email app. (Mac Mail). The error message I get is: "+you cannot use the application "mail" with this version of Mac OS X+". Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

If you had the Mail Application stored in any other directory (folder) than the root Applications Folder, you will get this error message because Leopard installs a new Mail Application in the Applications folder.
Delete your old Mail Application from its current locations, and from the dock, and run the newly installed Mail Application in the Applications Folder and you should be fine.
This is also true for several other Applications that are installed new in Leopard. I don't know them all, but you will when you run them and get the same error message.
Good luck. Hope this fixes your problem.

  • Cannot text chat with iChat since installing Leopard.

Since installing leopard, I have been unable to use iChat. I can boot up the application, and see my buddy list as normal. But when I double click on a buddy's icon to start a text chat, I get a completely blank chat box. (i.e. I don't see the buddy's name and icon at the top of my box.) if I type in the text box below and hit enter, I get a prompt that says "one or more buddies have to be invited to the chat." If I right click on a buddy's name, and click on "invite to chat", then ichat crashes and I get the message copied below.
I have tried reinstalling ichat from my OS 10 upgrade disk, then reinstalling the 10.5.4 combo update - no help. I tried blowing away my preferences for ichat in system preferences then re-entering my data - no help. Also, this problem happens on both my AOL and mac.com profiles, with both AOL and mac buddies.

  • It's all gone wrong since installing Leopard

Hi, I've got a few problems that have started since I installed Leopard, so after trawling through the forums and doing little bits, I thought I'd consolidate them all into one post and hopefully get all the answers together in one thread! I hope someone can help with suggestions, thanks in advance for your time. Here goes:
    1) Crashes: I have never had a crash in over 3yrs until this week when I installed Leopard and now I've had about 7 crashes in 4 days. I think they are kernel related but may also be related to:
    2) Free space: since installing Leopard my hard drive free space has gone from 30GB down to 7GB. Have emptied my trash, performed some routine maintenance to remove logs etc, and run Monolingual to remove localization files, so I'm now up to 16GB free, but there should be more.
All my music and photos are on an external drive, except for a 10GB backup music file which I had on Tiger...
    3) Having run OmniDiskSweeper, I am a bit confused about where Leopard puts music. In users/username/music/itunes, there is an 11GB internal library (where my backup folder is) and 8GB of artist folders. Do I need these if all my music should be on my other drive (and downloads are all backed up in the internal library)? They don't show up in Finder.
The same backup music file is also showing in private/var/root/music, so is it duplicated?
3a) I have also read that you can delete some private/var files that OmniDiskSweeper finds but am a bit wary about deleting things I don't understand. Can somebody clarify what is safe to get rid of and what I need to keep?
    4) When I looked at Console I have a recurring log from com.applesystemstarter 18 that says "The process has forked and you cannot use this Corefoundation functionality safely. You MUST exec ( )." What is this? Is it causing the crashes?
    5) I don't think it is related to any of this but at the same time as installing Leopard I upgraded my memory from 512MB to 2GB. Have run Rember and it says everything is ok with the new memory, but thought I'd mention it in case it helps!
I have run disk utility and it says the disk is ok, but everything is very sluggish, slow and lots of spinning beachball action. I guess it's down to the hard drive space and it's certainly improved since freeing up the extra 10GB. But my Mac is acting more like a PC right now and I don't like it. PLEASE HELP!!!
Thanks again, sorry for the long post.

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Hard disk runs slow/beach balls since installing Leopard

    Hi,
Since installing Leopard I've found any sustained disk use (copying files, extracting archives etc) incredibly slow, much slower than under 10.4. I've even done a clean install after a format, performed a disk verify and repair from the install boot CD and still no luck. It just seems that hard drive operations run frustratingly slow, and also cause general use of the system to momentarily hang.
Has anybody else experienced this problem? I have a 24" iMac Core 2 Duo (not the aluminium new one) with 4gb of ram.
    best,
    andrew

You may be able to repair this with the10.5.1 Combo Update
(I usually don't recommend updating to fix an issue but this is the first combo update in 10.5)
The combo update is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update (the one you get through SU) so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Since installing OS X 10.8.2 Safari is very slow to open sites

Since installing OS X 10.8.2 Safari is very slow to open sites

Do you get a notice that Safari has quit unexpectedly? If so, please do the following.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Since installing Maverick, speed has slowed down considerably. Not able to export photos form email to iphoto. What is going on?

    When did you install?
Spotlight will need to re-index the entire system so that can cause slow performance if you updated recently. It can take many hours on a large disk with a lot of data. Click the Spotlight menu, it should say if it is still indexing.
There is no point trying to fix anything whilst this is ongoing, because it may just speed up when complete.
Are you able to drag photos from email to the Desktop or to iPhoto's icon? How about the 'File menu > Save attachments' option?
Please clarify what you have tried, otherwise we may waste time on the wrong thing.
If the system is generally unstable there are other things to try too, such as safe boot.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
That will isolate all third party software, if the Mac is able to do the things that didn't work it suggests that you have software that is loading at startup or login. The easiest way for us to see these is if you download EtreCheck & generate a report.
Post the report here & we can try pointing to items that you can either update or remove.

  • 3 month old iMac has slowed down considerably after installing ML

I bought my iMac 3 months ago and installed Mountain Lion last night. Now everything on my Mac has slowed down considerably. From opening the System Settings to opening a page in Safari.
I have MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint installed and also VMware Fusion.  I have software (CorelDraw) that only runs on Windows (the one I have) therefor the virtual harddrive.
Is this what is causing the problem? If so, how can i uninstall ML to get my computer back to it's previous state.
I am very new to Mac so I don't quite know where to go and how to fix it.

I was just about to write the same problem, but I don't have VMware; my laptop is late 2008 was running Snow Leopard (uptodate version).
I've scientific softwares so probably would require a clean re-installation of ML. I MUST MENTION HERE that those software which were written for PPC will NOT work on ML. Just found out that one of my important softwares version won't work on ML; need $500  to upgrade that software .
Therefore, I'd also want to know how can I go back to SL.
I'll let you know how clean re-installation has worked.

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

    Hi ..
Not enough free storage space can slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk
OS X Tips Where did my Disk Space go?
Check to see if the startup disk needs repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If Disk Utility reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important data first before using OS X Recovery.
Anti virus software, as well as third party Mac cleaning utilities such as MacKeeper  and CleanMyMac can also slow your Mac down.
    For Safari.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari to test. if that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

I have been having a problem with my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet ever since I loaded Leopard. Often on initial start, the tablet is not working. I have to shut down and start again (notice I didn't say Restart because that doesn't fix it). Often after waking from the Sleep mode the tablet is again not working.
Initially upon the Leopard install it wouldn't work at all and I loaded the most recent driver (and yes, it was flagged as the #1 reported problem at Wacom Support) but the performance has been sketchy since reinstalling the drivers.
Anyone know anything else about this? Thanks.

I tried what nerowolfe suggested but that did not resolve my issue. I did a few hours trial and error and this was what I posted on the Wacom forum:
I am having similar problems with Intuos 3, driver 6.0.5-2, Leopard and MacBook Pro. On boot up Intuos is working fine, but once computer goes to sleep and wakes up, Intuos is dead. Unplugging and plugging back into the same usb port will not resolve the problem. To fix it I either have to switch usb port or reboot the computer. The initial usb port will be unable to connect to the Intuos until either the computer has rebooted OR the computer has been put to sleep with the Intuos connected to another usb port. The usb port that has been made inoperable with Intuos after sleep IS operable with other devices such as iPod's and usb flash drives. To resolve this problem I have clean installed Leopard and freshly installed driver 6.0.5-2 but the problem remains.
After 2 hours of turning applications on and off, tweaking different settings I have finally found what causes my Intuos sleeping disorder. Bluetooth! Bluetooth on — sleeping disorder, Bluetooth off — NO sleeping disorder.
I have tried removing my paired devices and paired them freshly up again, but still, Bluetooth on — sleeping disorder.
I have not removed any Bluetooth .plist files and such, mainly cause I am a bit tired now and I do not know what to delete. So, if anyone reading this knows which Bluetooth files I can delete to reset Bluetooth as much as possible I would be very happy if sharing.
Hope this problem can be resolved.

  • Can you install Leopard 10.5 on a computer that has XP OS.

I have a laptop and a desktop that both have XP OS. I want to know if I can load Leopard 10.5.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
No, but you can install XP on a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard.
    http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/
First off, Apple's license agreement forbids installing Mac OS X on anything but an Apple Macintosh labelled computer. Secondly, those machines use a different firmware than Apple uses most of the time, as well as lack certain optimizations the operating system has for hardware.
You can get a Mac with XP compatibility new for as little as $600 in the Mac Mini:
    http://www.apple.com/macmini/
And any Apple Macintosh made since October 26, 2007 can have both a preinstalled Leopard and a self installed XP on them.
eMachine, despite its name has no relationship to the eMac made by Apple, though those eMacs could only emulate windows. New Intel Macs made since 2006 can virtualize Windows which is much faster than emulation. To read about the differences, see my FAQ*:
