Systems Preferences Opens Automatically
My Systems Preferences opens on start up every time. I've been to Login Items in Accounts and it's not there to remove.
How can I stop it from opening automatically?
Thanks.Hi
Try this, go to Security and Privacy in System Preferences and unlock if locked, then tick the second box down in "For all accounts on this computer" called "require an administrator password to access system preferendes with lock icons"
Fingers crossed.

After installing Mavericks my iMac opens with the "rolling surf" desktop. I can then start my preferred desktop from a saved 'photo but when I retsart the iMac it reverts to "rolling surf". How can I get it to remember to open with MY choice rather than Apple's?
I did a little research on this, as I found some strange things with the .plist files.
It appears that Apple has changed the way that the plist files are handled, and there is now an extra step in the trashing-the-.plist-file fix:
1. hold down the option key
2. in the Go menu in the Finder, scroll down to Libary
3. in Library, find Preferences
4. in Preferences, find com.apple.desktop.plist and drag it to the trash.
5. go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor
1. Sort by Process Name and look for two processes named cfprefsd.
2. Make sure you select the one that has your user account, not "root", listed as the User.
3. Click the X up at the top left to kill that process
5. restart
6. this will generate a new .plist file, so you will have to reenter your preferences.
Sorry for the confusion. Could you try this and let us know- -
Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I have many documents, but not all, that cannot be opened in either Pages 5 or in Pages '09. The names show in my document lists, but are greyed out. They do not show any extensions, but I'm sure at seast some of them are PDFs. As I cannot open them, I am unable to try to experiment with any solutions - I am not tech savvy, but can sometimes fix things by trial and error. I have no issues with sharing documents as I have no other devices. I just want to be able to open my saved documents! Also, the documents I can open have to be persistently coaxed to open to a point that it is extremely aggravating. I am not so happy with this recent "upgrade." Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
You use Finder to find stuff. It is what you use to look at where your files are kept and to rename, move or trash them. If you double click on a file in Finder it finds the right software to open it for you.
To open particular files you use the right software for each type. Usually, but not always, the software that made the file.
Pages opens files ending in .pages. Also .txt, .rtf, and doc.
Pages 5 is the latest (but certainly not the greatest) version of Pages. It has trouble opening all sorts of files including the older Pages '09 files but it will still do it.
Unfortunately Apple has chosen for Pages 5 to also save its files as exactly the same file extension .pages despite it being a different format that can not be opened by the older Pages '09.
As we all know Apple is wise and great beyond belief and would not do something that on the face of it looks extraordinarily stupid and shortsighted. Therefore we know that it must be our fault and we are not holding the software right. Because we are bad users, we must be punished, by either having to use Pages 5 or jump through hoops to avoid using Pages 5.
If you have installed Pages 5 any .pages file (old or new) will be opened by Pages 5. If you then save the file, Pages 5 will change the file format. So don't open your files with Pages 5 and don't save them if you do.
To stop Pages 5 opening and resaving your old files, you need to drag it to the trash and empty it.
When it is no longer around to annoy you, you can go back to using Pages 09.

Since installing Maverick on my 21in. 3.2ghz iMac, cannot upload to any application without it locking up, Aperature opens automatically, my printers don't work and Apple has failed to reschedule a appointment with a Tech on Case ********* in 3wks
<Edited by Host>Sorry you've decided this is a rant but the objective observer would know that all I want is a solution to at least the 3 issues mentioned. I spent the better part of 2 nights with techs that had me doing all the standard refresh items, i.e. setting the PRAM... and as time goes on my frustration grows. Last week spent days trying to find the driver software Maverick now needs and Apple is supposed to have it and doesn't. So at what point does this become a rant? I've done things the right way had mucho patience thus far and as a kicker, Apple won't let me download Mountain Lion to reinstall and rid my self of Maverick. Tell me, would you complain?

Since installing Mavericks some time ago, applications have become slow to open, proccesses have slowed and, well, eveything has slowed down some. Also, almost every day, sometimes more than once, the iMac will freeze for a second, then reboot itself. I've tried searching for similar posts but haven't found an answer yet. I did open the console (which, I confess, I don't understand) and I'm getting lots of messages. But, as I've never checked before, I have no idea whether any of them are normal. Here's a small section:

Thanks in advance for anyone's insight!Ok, so I think I got rid of everything you suggested, Arthur. No real improvement in speed, but the computer's four and a half years old, so... I should just be satisfied if it doesn't crash every day. That would be an improvement. I'll have to wait a few days to see. I've run Etrecheck again just incase you see something else that might help. Thanks.

Since installing Mavericks, my screen pixelates.
Since installing Mavericks, my screen periodically becomes pixelated, forcing me to reboot to resolve the problem. I've tried reinstalling Mavericks which failed to resolve the problem. Any suggestions?
MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)Hello ZMan,
It sounds like you are having some graphical issues since installing Mavericks. I recommend the troubleshooting form the article named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Regards,

Why does System Preferences open on boot?
I have a 27-inch iMac, Late 2012, and I am running OS X 10.9.1.
Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks I noticed that System Preferences opens when I boot the computer. This did not happen before I upgraded. Is there a way to turn this off?Quit the Sys Prefs app before shutting down. Also, check that you don't have it set to open in login items under Users & Groups.

My HP Photosmart Printer/Scanner will not scan since installing Maverick help
Since installing Maverick my HP printer/scanner will not scan documents print or save them, how can I fix this?
this worked for my HP printer/scanner:
Try:
uninstall all printer manufacturer apps and "utilities"
go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Print
if your printer is there in the column on the left:
control-click on your printer
select "Reset Printing System..." and "reset" in the dialog that follows
if your printer is not in the column on the left, go to the next step.
do a factory reset on your printer. You'll have to consult the printer manual for how.
if you connect to your printer/scanner via wifi, reset the wifi system:
power down everything: modem, router, computer, and printer
power up each item in turn in the same order: modem, router, computer, and printer. Let each power up completely before moving on to the next
enter your wifi password in your printer so it can connect to the network
if you do not connect via wifi, go to the next step
go back to printers & scanners and it should see your printer and download a driver for it from Apple. If it won't, then try going to the HP website and there may be a new software package for your printer that is compatible with Mavericks. Download and install it. -
Since installing Maverick, all Adobe CC apps crash when I am trying to save or import.
Since installing Maverick, all Adobe CC apps crash when I am trying to save or import. I might be able to save the file if I do not try to select anything other folder than the current folder that opens (last opened). I do not use the cover view option (I see some have had problems with that), but almost always have it in list view.
Is there some setting I need to set or is there a fix for this somewhere?
Also, is it just me or does it seem like Mac crashes more now with Maverick than before? Here is a portion log from Photoshop CC from Step 1

Since installing mavericks my WD time machine doesn't work, it keeps insisting it needs more space? This wasn't an issue an hour earlier?
Id also like to know if Powerpc software will be supported? I have C&C Generals on disc but it doesnt run now mavericks is installed?!
Annoying!Regarding time machine, it probably took a full backup after you put mavericks on. To investigate, open Console, select "All Messages" and type "backup" (without the quotes). It will then only show you backup-related messages. If you're not sure how to read those, copy them and paste them into a reply here; we can investigate the situation.
I don't know anything about your PPC software issue, sorry. -
mavericks has broken most stock apps, app store ,preview, messages, facetime ect the list goes on they bounce in the menu then nothing its been like that since installing mavericks fixed briefly by reinstalling but then stopped again very quickly
any help ?You most likely ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" or "MacCleanse" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. -
Can Mavericks be uninstalled? Don't know if the discussion title pulled in all of my problem, so here it is again. Since installing Mavericks, my HP Printer adds an extra page to every print job, and iCal won't synch via iTunes with the Calendar on my iPhone 4s.
And no, I was a bad boy and had not been Time Machining. Guess I will now.
So, can Mavericks be uninstalled?Uninstall CleanMyMac2 > How To Uninstall CleanMyMac
Uninstall Cocktail > Uninstall Cocktail for Mac OS X
Third party cleaning utilities are not necessary on a Mac and can only cause problems.
Your Mac runs maintenance in the background for you > Mac OS X: About background maintenance tasks
Growl is un necessary and can slow the system down > Growl - Removing Growl
If you want to monitor the system, use the pre installed Activity Monitor app located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Then restart your Mac. -
Since installing Mavericks Photoshop CS6 is freezing all keyboard communication every 3 or 4 minutes
Hi, a couple of days ago I installed Mavericks onto an imac running 16gb ram, 3.4ghz HD. I'm running Photoshop CS6 version 13.0.5 & using a wacom with the latest drivers 6.3.7-3. I've had no issues previously but since installing Mavericks every 3 or 4 minutes communication is lost with the keyboard. By that I mean Photoshop will no longer respond to any keyboard shortcuts. I can keep working in Photoshop, it does not freeze completely but I'm locked into the tool i'm using unable to zoom in/out or any other task via the keyboard .If I exit the app and then return to it the keyboard functionality returns also. I am also able to jiggle the keyboard back into action by clicking away form the work area and onto another palette. Returning to the work area brings back the keyboard. Bluetooth keyboard & batteries changed too.
I've tried disabling the background save and also the graphics processor but with no success. Has anyone experienced anything similar and found a solution? Working is Photoshop has become a real drag as the workflow is broken every few minutes. Any help MUCH appreciated.
With thanksI too had the same issues with mavericks.
There are 3 MAJOR bugs for those working deep into photoshop on Mavericks. The keyboards freezes, the auto completion on the Polygonal Lasso tool, and the sudden blank menus. I have made several threads about this in these forums and I´ve tried sending bug reports to Adobe and Wacom. But no response! Now im a disappointed paying CC customer.
So, I´ve reverted back to Mountain Lion, which I don´t regret for a second. I can confirm all of the bugs went away. And not only that, Photoshop also performs better, its more snappy as well (I almost forgot how it is working with a bug free Photoshop, its like getting a new operating system ). I will not upgrade to Mavericks before all of these bugs are fixed, but with the response I got that might as well never happen. Wonder what I should do when buying a new computer?
ANyway, I recommend you revert to Mountain Lion if you want Photoshop to work properly, Adobe hasn´t given any indication that they are working on these bugs. -
Since installing mavericks, I cannot view pdf's in preview...
Since installing Mavericks, I am unable to view pdf's that I download using Preview. I receive the following prompt:
The file “Contract & Payment Express” couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view it. To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info.
When I go to the finder to do that, however, there do not seem to be any permission issues. Please help - I don't mind using adobe reader, but I do not like not being able to solve why something is not working when it was prior to the update. ThanksLinc's suggestion in:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/23360657#23360657
solved this issue for me. Thanks for taking the time Linc!
